Not Dead

Not Dead

BR Sunkara

I am a businessman. I have to go on tours extensively. I came to New York for some business agreement with my partner Rupert.  I like him personally for he is very simple and frank in every deal. I take much time speaking with him whenever I come to New York. He is also very much interested in me and he spends good time with me which says that he loves my company very much.

I have no interest in going to parties. But my business partner Rupert invited me to join the birth day party going to be celebrated in his house. I don’t know whose birth day it is. He also did not tell as I too did not ask. I thought that this may be the birth day of his son or daughter, so I thought that it is just a formality to attend the birth day party in Rupert’s house.

After going there, I knew that the birth day party is on the occasion of his wife’s birth day.  Rupert  has two daughters. They are married and working as the surgeons in reputed hospitals.

I went to Rupert’s house. We are busy speaking on some important matter sitting in Rupert’s private room. His elder daughter came and said that all the guests are waiting for cake cutting. Rupert told her that we will come in another ten minutes. She has gone and Rupert again immersed in the talk.

Ten minutes.. Fifteen minutes… Rupert is in his talking mood. I did not like to disturb his mood.

Now Rupert’s second daughter came and told him that mummy is waiting for him.

Now Rupert stood and looked at me. I stood with him.

“Let us finish this formality. Then we will come back here and continue.” Rupert said.

I silently followed him. Rupert’s wife is a famous cardiologist and she is working in city’s big corporate hospital. Her fame is not unknown in New York.

“She is my wife Barbara.” Rupert introduced her.

I was staring at her with unknown hidden feelings. She also saw me for a while like that. She is trying hard to control her feelings.

The party is over. Before coming back to Rupert’s room I am thinking about her.

Barbara is filled in my memories like wild fire. I loved her in my college days. I proposed my love to her and I asked her to be my life partner. She did not reply. After that I came to know that she got seat in medical college. Her silence was the rejection. So I controlled my feelings. I continued my studies in Business Administration in San Francisco State University and I have settled in California. I was completely indulged in my business development and I have completely forgot about her.

I had dinner with Rupert, Barbara and her two daughters along with his family and friends.

I am about to leave for my hotel. Rupert told me that his wife wants to talk to me.

When she is talking, Rupert is also stood behind her chair. The Message is simple.

“On that day, I could not accept your proposal. I wanted to be a famous cardiologist and I was afraid that love will be a hurdle in my journey ahead. So I did not answer, it does not mean that I don’t like you. I actually love you very much. After I joined the service in the hospital I enquired about you and I came to know that you are in California. I know, our relation had been sour. Later I was in contact of Rupert. We are happily married couple and I remembered you now when I saw you as an accident. I don’t know that love is not dead. I was sorry for not answering in time. Pardon me for my late message.”

As she told this with a lot of strength, I have become moved with a lot of emotions.

“Thank you for your message. It was late, but it has its great value. I now knew that I am not rejected. I respect your feelings.”

After that, I took Rupert in to my warm embrace and said goodbye. She was looking happy.
