Pack—the pack Sammy travels in
While trying to pick a branch of frozen grapes from a grape vine near the forest I noticed it was beginning to snow again. I quickly pulled on the branch as hard as I could. Eyes closed and jaw set I pulled back my hind legs and tried to remove the tiny branch from its vineyard. ‘Ah!’ no luck. What am I going to do if I don’t come back with anything for the pack? My head hung low as I contemplated these things. I was always disappointing the pack with as they call it my ‘effortless’ food gatherings. I could barely hunt truth be told. For Pete’s sake I am a wolf! How can I not know how to hunt? Fog ran out through my black noise as I sighed from repentance.
‘Slurp.’ “Guess who?” I looked up in surprise at who dared to lick my forehead and found Samuel. Samuel is my mate so he is allowed to do stuff like that, not that I like it at all. I said, “What do you think you’re doing? The pack isn’t even around you don’t have to pretend.” My black wolf spoke “Why pretend when I already know how to fake it. Why not just act out upon it for real? Don’t you think?” He huffed. I hate him and the little huffs he always does and his low voice and his bulky black fur and his strong instinct to hunt and fend for his kind. How did I end up with him? I ignored his question and contemplated whether I could really get this branch out of the grape vine.
“Let’s go. We have to be back soon, Sammy.” he said.
“But I don’t have anything to bring.”
“I’ll just say you helped me take down my prey.”
“I will not do that. I don’t want the pack thinking I can’t do anything.”
“Fine. If you desire to help the pack that much then we will just have to see. I suppose you can just continue the task of picking those frozen grapes from that frozen branch. I am sure the pack will think it splendid.”
“Well what do you suppose I do then?” Samuel came up to me and whispered into my ear “Simple Sammy, just go kill an innocent little bunny.” As his laughter rained out I found this argument growing tiresome. “Wait I forgot” he suddenly turned serious “you can’t even catch a rabbit.” As he started to make a circle around me with his body I came to my own defense “How do you know? I can do it, I just. . . haven’t been interested.”
“Interest. This isn’t about interest. This is supposed to be pure nature to wolves. How do you not get that?”
Oh man, this again. “Can’t we just leave?”
“Fine, if you are okay coming back with nothing in your muzzle. I have no control over that.”

Walking back, the snow finally subsided and Samuel stopped making rude comments or saying anything at all for that matter. Not that he could. He had a deer in his mouth. It was quite nice actually not having to hear his rampaging on me for once. Head held high he wore a fierce look in his topaz eyes. Most likely he was putting on this front for the fanning pack waiting for his kill.
“It’s Samuel!” the female wolves screamed as they came from all sides of us ranting to Samuel by saying he was so strong and he was the best hunter and yada yada yada. As me and Samuel passed the goggle eyed gals we made our way to the clearing in the forest where the rest of the pack resides.
“Nice work Samuel” one wolf chanted
“Woof! Woof!” another said
“Woo! That looks nice and juicy!” One of Samuel’s friends spoke. To be honest I always became a little jealous of Samuel seeing all these people fan over him for something like this. Why did leader make us mates?
“Now, now, step aside and let the leader inspect this so called ‘fine meat’” came the voice of the great leader. The leader had all different kinds of colors on his fur from black, to red, to dark blue, and white fur surrounded his whole body. All I had was white fur. Samuel had black fur. Samuel’s black fur and my white fur, sounds like a perfect match to me. To be honest, I would rather be with Eric. He is the only male wolf who has white fur and I thought we were a perfect match since we both got along so well. The leader happened to think differently. Samuel had the same thoughts as me surprisingly. The first time we ever really spoke was after the leader had assigned us to be mates. He told me that we shouldn’t have been mates at all. Rather he be with the strongest female wolf and I be with Eric which he might have called the weakest link at that period of time. The only problem was that the strongest female wolf belonged to the leader and Samuel wasn’t about to fight the leader for her.
“Well, well not a bad job Samuel. One day you might even be able to get a bear if you so desired to that badly.” The leader said.
Samuel didn’t look all that too pleased to hear what the leader had to say but was very pleased when the female wolves started screaming for him. Samuel wore a small proud little smile on his disgusting face.
“Leader may I speak with you for a moment?” I said to the leader. His reply was “In a moment, Sammy. Watch first as Samuel holds his head high for the approval of his pride.” What I saw was not pride for his pack but pride for his own selfish heart.
“He just wants you to be proud of all his work. Can you not do even that, my child?”
“Leader, he is not looking for anything out of me. He doesn’t need me and the fact that I am nothing like him doesn’t help at all. Why are we mates. I’m sorry for my scrutiny leader but I don’t believe we are supposed to be mates. I believe you may be wrong on this one leader.”
“Let us speak in private, Samantha.”
The great leader took me to his home in the forest and we spoke of my unsureness. The leader said “Why do you not respect me so, Samantha? I have been so good to this pack and yet you say I don’t know what I am talking about?”
I began to speak “But leader I didn’t-
“Nevertheless, I am aware of your nonexistent fondness of Samuel and I will try to mate you with another but I must say no one else has yet to complain to me on this matter. I don’t know if anyone will be happy trading mates. I will however try to find you a new mate. It will take me awhile though so be patient with me child.”
“Oh, great one I am so thankful to you. Thank you dearly.”
“Now off with you. You have brought nothing for the offering yet have you?”
“No, sir.”
“Then you will go out and find something before night fall. Now go, hurry before it becomes too dark.”
I***
As I walk through the forest looking for something for the pack I notice it has grown very dark. If it becomes too dark I will not be able to find my way back to the pack. I hurriedly keep sniffing for something the pack can eat. Nothing. I must keep looking for fear of the pack and leader being so disappointed in me they throw me out of the pack. If only I was a little more like Samuel I could find meat and kill it in ten minutes tops. Wait, why I am even thinking of Samuel at a time like this? Focusing back on the work at hand I look down and suddenly can’t seem to find my feet anymore. What? I look up quickly and I can’t see anything. It is pitch black. I can’t even see the tall trees in the forest anymore. Oh no, I am so scared. How am I going to get back to the pack now? “Guess who?”
What? “Who is that?” I scream. Was that just me or did that sound a lot like-
Suddenly, Samuel jumps in front of me, teeth bearing down on me. “What’s wrong with you?! Why are you out so late? What, you think you can find your way back when it is this dark? Well, then you will be sadly mistaken.”
I was too scared to speak. The only thing that came out of me was a whimper. I began to back away from him even though I didn’t know where I was going. I was so scared of not being able to get back to the pack and now I had to deal with Samuel’s real fierce side. This was the worst day in existence. Quickly, Samuel goes to tackle me but I jump out of the way and begin running. If only I knew where I was going. . . Crash! Samuel jumps on top of me and stops me in my tracks. What was I thinking running away from Samuel when I know very well he can catch me in an instant? I hastily realize that Samuel is on top of my back and that he is in deathly silence. The only thing I can hear is his and my own heavy breathing.
Samuel gets off of me and speaks finally after a long moment of just staring at each other “What do you think you’re doing?” I stare at him. “What do you think you’re doing jumping on me like that? You had no right.”
“No I didn’t but I don’t care about that. What I am really curious to know is why you are out here?”
“I just wanted to help the pack find some food so-
“Here it is. The pack this, the pack that. It’s always about the pack. It always has to be about the pack doesn’t it Sammy.”
Samuel jumps me again but this time I don’t have time to back away and the next thing I know I’m on my back in the snow. “Samue-
“Be quiet. Don’t you understand how I feel at all? You are supposed to need my approval, not the stupid leaders. You’re not his mate, you are mine! No matter what you say or do nothing is going to change that. Not even getting the leader to change mates.”
How did he know about that? The leader didn’t tell him did he? How he could have found the time to tell Samuel about that, I don’t know? Looking at Samuel now he looked madder at me than ever before. But was this really about me or the fact that he couldn’t get the leader’s mates.
“Can you just try for me, Sammy?” Samuel said
“Try what?” I finally spoke
“To love me. The mate you have now and for evermore.”
We both lay there like that looking at each other till what he wanted from me finally dawned on my mind. But could I really give him what he wanted? I mean he says I am a loose cannon and I can’t hunt like him and I don’t have fur like his. What if I can’t give him what he wants?
“First, get off me please.” Samuel huffed but he got off of me and I took my time standing up.
“Alright. I can try but I make no promises. I am not the leader’s mate and I can’t hunt and I might not even be able to give-
“Let’s just go home.”
Samuel looked at me with his topaz eyes. Too be honest that was the only thing I could see in the whole forest. As I said the words out loud to Samuel I felt my heart bump in anticipation at what might happen next. “Okay.”
Samuel and I walk home together through the forest with him as my guide. I just hope he isn’t disappointed that I couldn’t find anything for him or the pack to eat.
