The alarm clock woke Mariah McKenzie from her deep sleep, making her groan loudly with annoyance.
Monday mornings were always the worst, and to make it worse, it was going to be her first day at her new school.
To be honest, Mariah didn’t even know why she had to change school. Her old one was only an hour way if she rode her bike, and she wouldn’t mind the exercise either.
“Darling wake up” her mother said from the other side of the bedroom door “it’s a fresh start of school today, we both know you will regret it if you are late.”
It was true; Mariah hated to be late for school. She needed her education and good grades if she was ever going to be a doctor.
“I’m up, I’m up!” she called, sitting up on her small single bed.
When she heard her mother footsteps getting fainter, Mariah pushed herself of the bed, and gave a big yawn.
It had been over three weeks since she had to get up this early, and it was son not agreeing with her one bit.
To make she became wide awake, Mariah had the coldest shower she ever had that caused shivers to crawl up and down her spine.
Been as she wanted to make a good first impression, Mariah put on her favorite pale pink tee, and tights so she could look her best.
Her mother was waiting down stairs for her, with her baby brother Reece.
“Can you drive me to school today?” she asked her mother, as she got herself a bowl of cereal “I don’t think I have figured out where the school is yet.”
Her mother nodded, hardly listening to what Mariah was saying.
“Okay darling” she said “be sure to join any after school activities, which will look good on your job application when you are older.”
Mariah sighed, and just hoped that she would be listened to more at school than she was at home.

The school was smaller than Mariah had expected it to be, it could have fit perfectly in her old school five times probably.
“I’ll see you later mum” she said as she stepped out of the car “make sure you take Reece to play group.”
With that her mother drove away, leaving Mariah outside the school all on her own.
As she started to walk closer to the school she saw that it was jam packed with students giggling and gossiping to each other.
This left Mariah feeling loner than she ever expected that she could be.
She was used to having her best friend Amy and Sophie with her as she walked though the corridors, which was a lot different to walking through a strange school on her own.
When Mariah spotted the reception, she nearly ran towards it, eager to find out what her lesson plan was, and where she was supposed to be.
Unlike the rest of the school, the reception was virtually empty. The only people there were Mariah, and the receptionist.
“Excuse me” Mariah said to the old looking receptionist “my name is Mariah McKenzie, it’s my first day here, and I don’t know where I am supposed to be going.”
The old lady gave her a warm smile “you have come to the right place sweet heart. I will go find you your lesson plan, shall I?”
Mariah nodded quietly, feeling her shyness shine through her the way that she hated.
She never wanted to be shy, it stopped her from making friends, which was a awful thing been as she had no friends at this school yet.
“Here you go” the old lady said, giving Mariah her schedule and a map of the school.
Mariah just hoped that she would make it to her first lesson on time.

Mariah made it to her first lesson a few minute early, but the room was already full of students the stared at her as she walked in.
That was probably the worst thing about going to a new school, the staring that people did. As if Mariah was some sort of exotic animal in the zoo.
The teacher, Mr. Harper was a god send. He didn’t make Mariah introduce herself at the front of the class, and let her sit right at the back on her own.
“Hello” a girl said, sitting next to Mariah just as Mariah sat down herself. “My name is Rebecca Roberts, and you are?”
Mariah turned to the tall blonde girl and said “I’m Mariah McKenzie; It’s nice to meet you.”
Rebecca gave her a sweet smile “the pleasure is all mine, I am sure.”
Mariah smiled back, not knowing how to reply.
She had never been good at meeting people, especially not people so…cheerful.
“I was just wondering if you wanted to sit with me at lunch.” Rebecca said, giving Mariah another sweet smile.
“That would be nice” Mariah said after she gave it some thought.
It would be nice not to have to sit on her own, that would have probably been mortifying.
“Cool” was all Rebecca said, just as she turned her attention to the teacher at front.

The next few lessons were as boring as hell for Mariah; she had already learnt what they were teaching the year before at the old school. So she felt like she was learning, just writing down what she already knew.
By the time it was lunch, Mariah was excited to talk to Rebecca, to see a friendly face instead of all the strangers that wouldn’t stop looking at her with curiosity that people give when they see something they hadn’t seen before.
“There you are” Rebecca sang as Mariah walked into the cafeteria “I have been looking for you everyone! Come with me, I have some people that I would like you to meet.
Mariah followed Rebecca to a table with three other girls on it, every one of them blonde.
Is this a blonde club or something, Mariah thought, looking down at her own curly blonde hair.
“This is Lily” Rebecca said, pointing to a short girl “Liz” she pointed to a chubby girl that was eating some sort of cake “and my sister Hannah” the last girl nearly looked exactly the same as Rebecca except for the fact that she had boyish short hair.
“Girls this is my new friend Mariah” Rebecca told them.
Mariah and Rebecca sat down with the girls, and listened to them as they filled them in with the conversation that they had missed.
Apparently someone called Samantha had been caught smoking at the back of the bike she and had been kicked out of school for the rest of the term.
To Mariah’s total shock, they actually included her into the conversation, asking her about the punishments set at her old school and comparing them to the ones at the new school.
At the end of lunch, Mariah hadn’t even eaten a single bite of food because she had been to busy talking to her new found friends.
All she could do now was hope that they would stay her friend.

The last lesson of the day was English, and Mariah found herself the centre of attention, but unlike in the rest of the lessons, people talked to her instead of just staring at her, which made her feel much better.
She even found herself flirting with a boy called William, which was fun been as she couldn’t remember the last time she flirted with someone so hot!
She had peoples phone numbers being paced to her front right and centre, people telling her there facebook name, and describing the picture on there profile page so she could find them.
At the end the teacher had to threaten people with detention to be able to get them to shut up while he told the class what they were supposed to be doing.
And unlike the other lessons, Mariah finished only half a page of writing because everyone was trying to get her attention.
When the school day ended, and her mother came to drive her home, the only was she could say to describe her day was “it was unbelievable!”
