When someone is prejudiced and behaves, it can lead to discrimination. Discrimination against any person on the basis of religion, caste, gender, or regionality is called discrimination. Some examples of discrimination are given below.
Gender discrimination: In some villages, girls are not allowed to study after fifth or sixth grade. Most of the girls are not allowed to do any employment after studies, rather they are forced to marry. In many families, boys wear western clothes but girls are not allowed to wear western clothes.
Religious discrimination: Many times people are not given jobs due to being of a particular religion. Due to religion, people are not allowed to visit certain public places (especially places of worship).
Caste discrimination: The caste system in India is quite old. According to this system, people are divided into different castes. Different jobs are prescribed for each caste person. For example, a person born in the Mahar caste is made only to clear the garbage and remove dead animals from the village. Even after reading and writing, people could not change their profession.
Dr. BR Ambedkar belonged to the Mahar caste. He had to face many kinds of discrimination since childhood. Even today untouchable caste people suffer from various forms of discrimination in villages and small towns. A person of an untouchable caste is not allowed to visit the temple. He cannot take water from the village well. The roots of the caste system were so deep that it was very difficult to get out of the social structure based on it. The potter's son could only work as a potter. The cobbler's son could only act as a cobbler. Only Brahmins had the right to perform religious rituals. It was also forbidden for lower caste people to participate in rituals conducted by upper caste people. Equality fight many of our freedom fighters raised their voices against caste discrimination. Gandhiji gave the name of 'Harijan' to the people of the untouchable caste. He tried tirelessly to eradicate prejudice from the minds of the people. The name of Bhimrao Ambedkar is also among those who played an important role in this fight. When India became independent, the distinguished leaders of that time started the construction of a new country. Caste discrimination was declared a crime in the constitution. The Constitution also provided that the upliftment of Dalits should be done. The Constitution made India a secular country. This means that there is no official religion in India. In terms of law, all religions are the same. No person can discriminate against another person on the basis of religion or caste.
