The sun was setting behind the stone-gray mountains, and a midnight-black she-cat with a silver face, paws and tail with incredibly long fur sat, looking down at the high, rough surf on the sea, and took a long, deep sigh. A white tom padded up to her and sat down beside her.
"What will we do now, Moonbeam?" He asked her.
"I don't know, Ice. Our dens have been destroyed, and we can't possibly find another place to rest and build dens before dark." Moonbeam told him.
"At least we won the battle. That pack of rogues would have shredded us if you hadn't told us to keep fighting. You are a great leader, Moonbeam." Ice commented.
"Thankyou, Ice. But I fear that is no longer true. We can't rebuild the dens. There are too many cats to be healed. This is the first time I have had no idea what to do in my leadership." She glanced behind her and said: "We'd better get back to camp. We should try to rebuild the dens."
The two cats began to pad towards a small clearing with brambles and gorse that had once been dens scattered around, while cats with battle wounds and scars lay in wait for healing herbs.
"I'd better go and help them." Ice said, and ran off into the crowd to heal the injured cats.
What den should I rebuild first?
Moonbeam looked around. How about the Nurse-Den?
Moonbeam then heard mewls for milk coming from the kits. She then realised that they were not cries for milk but of mourning. She raced into the Nurse-Den.
"What's going on?" She demanded.
"It's Diamond. She won't wake up." A she-cat with a long, thick, scar across her muzzle replied.
"Clawedjaw, tell me exactly what happened." Moonbeam said.
"A rogue came in here, and Diamond and I defended the kits. Diamond was weaker, and she was knocked uconcious. When I scared the attacker away, I tried to wake up Diamond to make sure she was okay, but she wouldn't wake up." Clawedface explained, then dropped her voice to a whisper. "I think she's died."
Moonbeam glanced at Diamond, and called:
"Ice! Come quickly!" Soon, Ice was at his leader's side.
"What's happened to Diamond?" He asked.
"She was hurt by one of the loners. She won't awaken." Moonbeam meowed.
Ice carried a bundle of herbs over to Diamond, and did a thing that only the Advisors could do. All at once, Diamond snapped back to life. She pulled her kits towards her, and they suckled happily.
"She's fine. But we still need to keep an eye on her." Ice concluded.
"Okay. Now, I need to get back to rebuilding this den. Clawedjaw, can you help Ice heal the rest of the group?" Moonbeam asked.
"Of course, Moonbeam." Clawedjaw agreed, enthusiastic to be with her mate.
Moonbeam followed the couple out of the Nurse-Den and picked up a bramble to put on the ruined den. Suddenly, a scream peirced the air. A young, light golden, she-cat raced into the demolished camp.
"What's wrong, Honey?" A black she-cat with eyes as dark as night asked the terrified young cat.
"It's terrible, Night!" Honey wailed.
"But what's wrong?" Night reapeted.
"Wa, wa, WAVE!" Honey cried.
"What do you mean, 'wave'?" Ice questioned.
"A huge wave, coming this way! It will kill us all! Run for your lives, everybody!" And with that, Honey raced away as fast as she could.
Screams erupted from around the camp and many cats followed Honey.
"Please, everyone! We must stay together!" Moonbeam yowled, but nobody listened.
I might as well run too.
Moonbeam was about to, when she remembered Diamond. She rushed into the Nurse-Den and saw it was empty, so she began to head up the side of the clearing, which was a large hill. It was then that she saw it. She saw the huge wave.
There was no way she could get away from it in time. It was too close. She gave up, and lay down, waiting for her death to come. The Tsunami came closer and closer, and a gigantic shadow spread over Moonbeam.
Moonbeam coughed and spluttered out water. She blinked the salty sea water out from her eyes. Suddenly, she noticed something amazing.
I'm alive!
"Ice! I'm here!" She called, but there was no answer. "Ice? Are you there? Clawedjaw? Diamond? Honey? Night? Anyone?"
Moonbeam realised that there was nobody there.
Am I the only
survivor?
Moonbeam thought desperatly.
She decided that she must find a new home, a new life. She quickly caught a squirrel and gulped it down before she set off on her epic journey.
I opened my eyes and rested my head down on the soft moss of my nest. I felt Mosstalon's steady breathing as she slept silently. I was about to go back to sleep when I remembered that today was exactly six moons after my birth. Today was the day I would be made an apprentice.
"Mosstalon, Mosstalon!" I cried, shoving my mother awake.
"What is it, Tanglekit?" Mosstalon murmmured.
"I'm going to be an apprentice today! I can't wait! Who do you think my mentor will be?" I blurted out.
"I don't know." Mosstalon then chuckled. "You remind me of when I was about to be made an apprentice. I couldn't wait to be a warrior."
"Can I go try hunting so when my mentor teaches me to hunt I'll already know how to?" I requested.
"No you shall not!" Mosstalon answered. "Kits aren't allowed to leave camp, and you know that!"
She gently flicked my ear with her tail. "But you can try to catch my tail." She began to swing her tail in the air. I leaped up and caught it in one go.
"Looks like you've inherited the same wonderful skills from your mother." A familliar voice said from the entrance of the nursery.
"Thanks, Bumblestripe!" I thanked my father happily.
"Now, cats are already gathering for your ceremony, so lets go."
"Oh, no you don't!" Mosstalon grabbed me as I leaped out of the nest. "You look like you've just ran around the whole lake collecting burrs and putting them on your pelt!" She began to lick me feircely.
"Ugh! Stop!" I pulled myself away, and Mosstalon gave me one quick lick before following me out of the nursery.
Firestar was standing on Highledge looking down at his clan, and when he saw me he yowled:
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath Highledge for a clan meeting!"
He bounded down the rocks towards me.
"Tanglekit is now six moons old. The time has come for him to become an apprentice. Tanglekit, your mentor will be-" Firestar scanned the crowd. "Tanglekit, your mentor will be Spiderleg."
I bounded over to my mentor and touched noses with him.
"From this day on until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Tanglepaw." Firestar added.
"Tanglepaw, Tanglepaw!" Fernpaw cried, and then the rest of the cats gathered there joined in.
I watched as Tanglepaw thanked the cats calling his name.
"Now, Tanglepaw, I shall teach you to be the best warrior in the forest. Your mother and father are good fighters, so you shall be better than anyone else in the clan." Spiderleg was saying to his new apprentice.
I was bursting with pride at the thought that my kit was soon to be a warrior.
"Mosstalon!" Firestar called to me. "I need you to lead a patrol around the territory. There has been stale Windclan scent around the border again. We need to be extra careful around now."
"Not them again! Why don't Windclan go hunt on Riverclan's territory instead? Anyway, who should I bring on the patrol?" I asked.
"Take Bluepaw, Spottedhead, obviously Fernpaw because she's Spottedhead's apprentice, and Spiderleg and Tanglepaw." Firestar replied.
"Yes, Firestar." I dipped my head respectfully to the clan leader. As I padded away, I noticed that Firestar looked old with age.
I haven't noticed his aging.
I thought. I felt sick as I realised that Firestar's end was drawing nearer and nearer. Then, I remembered that I needed to tell him something I would regret if I never told him before he died.
I turned around to face him. "Firestar, there's something I need to tell you..."
"Yes, Mosstalon?" Firestar asked.
"You go on ahead. I'll catch up with you later," I told Spottedhead before turning to Firestar. "It's Swiftpath. He's your brother."
I trotted along through the forest, stopping to sniff every fern and shrub I passed.
"Can we hunt now?" I begged Spiderleg.
"This is a border
patrol, not a hunting one!" Spiderleg snapped.
"But Spiderleg, this is my first ever
time out of camp other than the fire! I need to learn how to hunt!" I wailed.
Why won't he let me? It's so unfair!
I thought.
"Oh, go on, Spiderleg! He's never felt the glory of being a warrior! You can go train him instead!" Thanks, Spottedhead!
"No. Firestar sent us on this patrol! Tanglepaw can train later." Spiderleg insisted.
"Oh, fine!" I meowed.
I ran up ahead, and started sniffing the plants again. Fernpaw ran to my side.
"Hi, Tanglepaw! You're going to love being an apprentice! We can catch so many great things, squirrels, mice, and if you're really good, a bird!"
Bluepaw came up to join us now. "And then the gatherings! You can meet so many cats there!"
"Sorry! I had to tell- I mean report to Firstar about uh, having spotted some twolegs close to one of the most popular hunting spots when I was out with Bumblestripe last night." Mosstalon had come.
What's she hiding?
I wondered.
"Ooh! We're here!" We had reached the Windclan border.
I looked around. It was beautiful. You could see the entire lake, and beyond. I suddenly heard a yowl.
"Intruder!" Spiderleg growled. His claws suddenly unsheathed.
I saw a mangy cat with thick jet black fur, long whiskers, and strange white markings on one shoulder dragging along a large rabbit while limping. The cat looked up at Spiderleg's yowl, and leaped into action.
Spiderleg and the tresspasser fought hard, becoming a scratching and hissing ball of fury.
"No! Stop, Spiderleg!" Mosstalon leaped out, separating the two cats. "Spiderleg, this cat is obviously not from around here! Smell her! She smells like the sun-drown place! And of the mountains, and of many other places! This cat has been traveling, and is desperate for prey. We will escort her to camp, and ask Firestar what to do with her, before we attack her."
Spiderleg glared at Mosstalon.
"Don't take me anywhere! I can go where I please, when I please!" The stranger hissed at my mother.
"Don't worry. We won't hurt you, just ask our leader what to do with you," Spottedhead reasured her.
The strange cat gave a growl, but then bowed her head. "Fine, take me to this camp of yours, but I won't stay there for long."
"Spottedhead, Fernpaw and Bluepaw, you continue the patrol, Spiderleg, Tanglepaw and I shall escort..." Mosstalon trailed off, looking at the cat that would come with them to the camp.
"Moonbeam, Moonbeam's my name," she told Mosstalon.
And so I, with my mother, Spiderleg and Moonbeam headed back in the direction of the camp.
Upon entering the camp, many hostile stares greeted Moonbeam. When Rainclaw, my moody brother, spat,
"Who's that?!"
Firestar bounded down from his den.
"Firestar, this is Moonbeam, she is a loner who has travelled for a long time, and who my patrol found on the border to Windclan," I told Firestar.
"Greetings, Moonbeam. Come, our medicine cat, Jayfeather, shall tend to those wounds you have," Firestar told Moonbeam.
"I don't need your help!" Moonbeam spat.
"Please, we just want to restore your health."
Moonbeam bowed her head. "Very well."
Once Moonbeam had been tended to by Jayfeather, Firestar and I sat down with her to hear about her story as to how she got to the lake.
