Chapter 1

"So, what's up with you and Josephine?" John, one of Marcus's best friends, elbowed Marcus in the ribs. Marcus barely felt the jab. John would be off to work in a few minutes, so, they were saying goodbyes.

Marcus's gaze was fixated on the tiny blonde woman a short distance away who was quietly standing underneath the shade of an ancient gnarled oak tree. She was patiently waiting for him to join her as he had every Wednesday and Friday for several months now. They had a routine of taking a walk around the park and then they'd go to a cafe for lunch afterward. Josephine lived right across the road from the park, so if the weather was bad, they'd hang out at her apartment. It was never a big deal. Until today.

"Hello? Earth to Mark!"

Marcus snapped out of his stupor. He frowned in annoyance to John, but his gaze never left Josephine. She smiled at him. Marcus didn't smile back, but his dark blue eyes couldn't hide what was going on in his heart.

"What? She's just a friend. Chill." Marcus growled under his breath.

John could see more than that between them.

"Really?"

"Yeah. She's..." Marcus gulped, "like a sister to me."

John scoffed. That was the weakest excuse he'd ever heard.

"Then why haven't you told her about Katie?"

"I'm going to introduce them tomorrow."

It was a lie. Katie and Josephine could never meet. Maybe the lie would be enough to shut John up for a while. "But, seriously dude, not being rude, but you need to stay out of this."

With that, Marcus strode over to Josephine, who ran wide-armed to embrace him in a hug, as if they'd been apart for an eternity. John shook his head at the sight of them and went on his way.

Chapter 2

Josephine immediately noticed Marcus really wasn't reciprocating her affection today. There was a heavy, hidden sadness, even as Marcus sighed against her neck.

"You didn't call me last night! I got worried!" Josephine's voice was strung with laughter.

"I fell asleep when I got home. Sorry."
