The Walk

A gentle breeze blows down from the northern edge of the wooded mountains from a hidden babbling brook to caress my face in the humid, sticky August evening as I walk this steep, winding and pothole-marred country road. The woods surround me on both sides at this stretch of road. White wild daisies pose happily as I pass by. I never get tired of the beauty of what nature has to offer in this secluded holler. The flowers begin to dance to the music of the wind as the breeze stirs them awake from their afternoon slumber.

I welcome the wonderful breeze with a sigh. I stop here to enjoy this quick moment outdoors, to rest, knowing the breeze will not last in this oppressive heat. One good thing is the gnats and mosquitoes haven’t found me yet. Otherwise, I’d be miserable right about now.

I tilt my head to the deep blue sky peeking through the swaying leaves of the trees. I look up at a wispy, thin cloud passing overhead in the vague shape of a heart. I smile if only ever so slightly. I take it as a sign. These days, the ability to smile has become a rarity for me.

The cloud falls apart before my eyes and disappears as it's carried into the cerulean blue of the heavens far away above me. The trees stop
