Prologue

Present Day

Dear Luke,

I am writing to you because I can’t say this in person. You are leaving for college tomorrow, and I will miss you terribly. We were really good friends, but we never really talked you know? About things that really matter. These are a few things I should have told you, but did not. For you to understand, we need to go back. Before I really met you. Back to when we were just two people sitting next to each other in Journalism; when we were mere acquaintances.

Your friend,

Raine

Dear Luke,

Let’s be honest--life is difficult, but right now, my life is a hellhole in which the only way to escape is to read books and pretend I am in another world, another time.

My Dad has mental problems--at least I think he does. See, today he asked me a question and I answered him twice. Well, he came over with a bamboo stick from the living room and hits me for “not answering”. Then, when I tried to explain to him that I did answer, he hit me again for “talking back”. Go figure.

My mom...well my mom’s alright most of the time. I love her and I know she loves me, but she gets so annoying sometimes. My brother..well I’m pretty sure he is in the same boat with my Dad. We call him Mr. Sugar because he literally eats candy like it’s food. Worse, he steals it, eats it behind people’s backs and then lies about it. Bold faced lies. He has been spanked on numerous occasions for it; he still continues.

Your friend,

Raine

Dear Luke,

Today, me and my tennis team beat Lakefish High School 16-2 again. I go to Salem Rich High School. I have no real friends besides the people on my tennis team an this guy who sits next to me in Journalism called Luke Cadwell. (Oh wait! That’s you!).

Tennis is kind of an ordeal. The first thing you should know is that I hate it. I have been playing since I was five, but it is so tedious. There is no fun in training for hour everyday only for some rich spoiled brat to come and cheat you out of the game. That is the the real reason I hate it. Forget the workload, forget the fact that I hate being yelled at--the true reason I hate tennis is because I cannot stand a cheater.

Your friend,

Raine

Dear Luke,

I have never had a boyfriend, but I really like this guy who plays tennis. He also happens to be loaded. His name is Jax. Jax Griffin. I have had a crush on him since I was nine. I don’t
