MAX
Max roared in rage and slammed his fist in the brick wall. The rough chipped brick bite his knuckles Max watched as the small red stinging scratched turn pink and healed in front of his eyes. He really needs to lose that stick up his ass, he thought to himself, I’m allowed to like humans. They’re not that bad. I like hanging with them. So, they’re a little weird, so am I, I like that, and we’re all a little weird. He jerked a hand through his thick dark hair; a bright red strip ran through it. Her ranted on and on about the piercings, it’s two, in my ear. As soon as I take them out it’ll heal in seconds .I like it, I was my choice. Screw him.
Max clenched his jaw, his teeth throbbed. He hit the wall one more time. He wanted to roar, but growled. He may be away from the town, but, now a days, at the slightest caught of a cry, cops were called and they descended like vultures. Now that would be bad. Max kicked the wall and growled again.
“Hey! Is everything alright down there?” A girl’s called voice from above the wall. Max frowned, stepped back, tilted his head up and searched the darkness. A leg swung over, clad in black skinny jeans and neon colored converse. His hair flopped down in from of his eyes, he pushed it back aggressively. Her face appeared. Max could see she had huge dark eyes, curvy lips, and long brown hair in a braid over her shoulder, it swung as she leaned towards him. She squinted at him and frowned. Max was baffled, how could she get up there. There were gaited woods on the opposite sides and the wall was more than ten and a half feet tall.
“How’d you get up there?” he called. The girl grinned in a devilish way.
“Ways.” Her leg swung.
“Ways? What kind of ways?” he questioned her.
“Secret,” said with a shy smile.
“Well, fine.” Max could easily scale it, even jump, but he sensed that this girl was just a girl. “Do you have a name?”
“Yes.” Her answer was sweet and simple. Max waited for her to tell him.
“May I know it?”
“No.” Simply and sweetly.
“Do you answer in anything but one word answers?” Thinking of triumph with his clever question, he smirked.
“Sometimes.” She smirked at him pulled her leg up and sat cross legged on top of the wall. Max was too agitated to deal with this silly girl now. He turned on his heal and headed up the ally.
“Wait.” The girl called.
Max heard her gasp. He turned and caught her with un-natural haste. He teetered on his heels, but fell back as the girl pulled away. They turned in the air and hit the ground in a jarring fashion, the girl on her back, Max pinning her with his body. Max felt every inch of her against him. Her hands against his chest, the swell of her breasts, her hip, and her breath warmed his jaw and cheek. She was warm and soft and smelled like temptation and Japanese cherry blossom. The warmth of her drew him in; he breathed her in as his body thumped with want. Max tensed. The girl wiggled under him. He forced himself to roll off her, and lay on his back next to her. She immediately bolted up and rubbed the back of her head. She had a purple sweater on.
“Are you alright?” She turned around to him. “That was three.” Max said, his eyes locked on the dull stars above. He heard her laugh. She stood, brushed herself off and offered her hand to Max. He glanced at her hand, then to her face. She was smiling at him, all friendly like. Finding it bad to get to close to her, Max settled on the ground stretching out his legs then laced his fingers behind his head, “I’m good.” She laughed again.
“It’s not much of a view from here.” She glanced up. Max’s eyes slid to her. Her head was tilted completely back, her eyes searched the cloudy dark blue sky.
“I’m Max,” She nodded either herself or Max but then walked to the mouth of the ally. Max watched her till she disappeared around the wall of the abounded building on the left. Max vaulted up and called out to her as he followed. Max skidded around the building. She was standing under the yellow light of the street lamp.
“What?” She called to him. Max drew himself up and glided over to her. Moving smoothly, drawing the dark around him as a velvet cloak of a king, putting confidence and swagger in to his steps. Moving like a stalking lion, that Max knew drew girls to him like bees to sweet honey. When he reached the circle of light she stood in, he stepping O so close to her, the top of her head only came to his chin, so close the heat radiated passed amidst the small space between their bodies. Max’s eyes roomed her body, wide curvaceous hips, her sweater hid nothing of her swelled chest the way it moved as she breathed. The V-neck of her sweater showed her smooth skin the way her collar bones stuck out a little a super tiny beauty mark on the top of her right collar bone, right where her neck met the curve of her shoulder. He stood over her grinning brightly, seductively if he could, he would have purred at her. She sucking in a quick breath, Max knew her heart raced, his raced a little too. Her brown eyes had longish, thick-ish lashes on top and thinner on the bottom blinked at him.
“Your name, Sweetheart?” He tilted his head, his voice a sweet purr to her. He arched one eyebrow at her. Max watched her deep light brown eyes enlarge as she was entrapped in his. Her pink lips opened, Max leaned farther over her, teetering on the tips of his boots for her answer. She smiled at him, rose on to her tip-toes and whispered in his ear. “Alice.” She danced away. Half jogging and half running back to town. Max watched her.
ALICE
God, I’m such and idiot sometimes. I really wish I could have just let him leave, but I wanted to see his face, Alice thought as she was pinned underneath the boy’s heavy body. Her hands felt the solid chest. He looked slim from on top of the wall but she realized, well, felt is more like it he was muscle, smooth sweet muscle under, above, her palms. The boy smelled incredible, like Old Spice. Alice saw herself taking a big bit out of his shoulder, as if he was a big male-smelling cookie, I wonder if he tasted as good as he smelled. His breath hot on her neck sent ripple down her down body. He tensed and rolled off her. Alice sat up and straightened out her purple sweater before she turned to look at him.
“Are you alright?” He had a strange look on his face from what she could see in the dim alleyway. “That’s three.” His voice rolled like a soft rumble deep and suave. Alice laughed at him. She could almost feel what it would be like to press the side of her head to his chest and the sensation of his voice revolving in her ear. It shocked her how much she would like to experience that. When she stood brushing dirt and that shocking thought away, she offered a hand to him, the least she could do for catching her. She watched him stretch out on the filthy ground lacing his finger behind his head. To Alice, he looked like a tiger readying to take a catnap in the sun. She found it hard to hide the smile on her face, but she did.
“It’s not much of a view from here.” Alice looked up and watched the dark sky shaded in gray clouds. “I’m Max.” Alice nodded. Max. She liked it. It suited him well. Well, from what little she knew and saw really, it worked well. The red strip through his head, a black (or dark blue), skinny black jeans, and thick black boots, It all worked well together. Not feeling any other reason to stay, she turned and left.
She hurried down the block and paused under the street lamp when he heard him call out to her to wait. When she turned around, she saw nothing but shifting darkness. She saw his slim outline as he walked. Stalked, prowled towards. Her eyes were glued to him. Watching the way he slinked to her, her heart skittered.
“What?” She could barely speak her tongue felt thick, the warm tingles that spread up her spine and branched out through her nerves made it hard for her brain to make a complete though that didn’t involve Max, his sexiness, why she felt like this to a guy she just met not five minutes ago or the fact how willing she’d take her clothes off then and there. Alice scolded herself; I am hopped up on way to many love novels. He sautéed up to her, he was about a foot taller than Alice’s 5’ 6” height. Max was so close to her, her head was tilted all the way back and she even leaned back a little. His smile stopped her heart perfect white teeth with the reddest lips she’d even seen on a boy, it made her body tighten for him. She wanted nothing more than to throw herself at him and give him anything he desired of her. “Your name, Sweetheart?” He cooed, rumbled tenderly, her heart stilled, she smiled slowly at his eyes. He had the deep dark blue eyes, they almost looked black at first glance, only blue if you were up close and saw the way the glowed. The tilt in his brow gave her sweet tingles. Alice rose to her toes close to his ear, his smelled so intoxicating making her want to bury her nose in his shirt and breathe him in forever.
“Alice.” She whispered to him. She swiftly pulled back then jogged as smoothly as she could away. Inside, she wanted to howl Max’s name. He’s amazing, she thought. His glossy black hair, the striking red streak, the winking black stud in his right lobe, the way his shirt hugged his shoulders, his height. She smiled the whole way through town. She was almost running with the high energy feelings that coursed through her. She felt like she had just met the lead singer of her favorite band, who had winked and slipped her his number. Alice forced herself to slow her pace once she hit the neighborhood. Walking with her hands stuffed in her pockets, head down with a hurried pace. Head lights flashed up ahead. Alice froze. The thunder of an old engine rolled down the block. Alice darted to the small gap between fenced back yards. There was enough room for garbage can and little more. Alice ducked behind the second on in the row. She held her breath as the car rolled to a stop near the curb. Alice froze, and released a breath of relief when the car squealed away.
Alice slipped down the alley. She kicked over a can with an extremely loud clash, the security light blinked on in a backyard. Not much farther down a low brick wall blocked the small space. Balancing on foot on the wall Alice reached her leg over the soft dirt of her grandmother’s garden. Even if she missed a plant the supple soil held foot prints. She hurried across her backyard, the whisper of leaves as her background music. She slipped her window open, using the plastic box that housed her old toys; she vaulted herself up and shimmied through her window. Walking on her hands as she slowly pulled her legs through. The front door banged open; Alice lunged completely through the window. She slammed in closed, promising to replace the screen come morning. Kicked her shoes off, yanked her sweated off and pulled her night shirt on, not noticing it was inside out. She slipped swiftly into bed and rolled over so her back to the door. The door open swiftly and closed just as fast. A high pitched giggles, then a low laugh floated under the door. Her Aunt had a ‘friend’ over. At least her aunt’s room was in the basement.
Max’s face flashed in her mind. She found it more than little odd that he was ever present in her mind, and how much feeling came with his face. Alice did find him attractive, very much so in fact. She shimmied out of her jeans, carelessly tossed then across her room. She put Max to the side for now and snuggled into her pillow, while Max sneaked in to her dreams.
MAX
Max toed off his boots, rolled his ankles with several satisfying cracks and popped his feet on the glass coffee table of his upstairs den. He slouched low in the center curve of the L shaped leather couch in his den. He’d got hooked in a marathon of Law & Order: SVU and almost nearly sunk completely down between the warmed cushions of the couch when his older brother, Kieran, paced slowly into the room. By the way he had his arms crossed over his chest, his shoulders straight and tense, the slow way he walked into the room, like he was in an art museum and was talking his time wandering from painting to painting, tipped Max off that something ELSE was wrong with him. Max sighed melodramatically and threw his head back looking miserably at the ceiling.
“What is it this time?” Maw sighed. He acted exaggeratedly because he was tired of every little thing ticking his brother off. “Where were you? You walked out without a word and came back and plopped down like nothing even happened.” Kieran waved his hand at his brother, sprawled over the couch with his feet up. “Get your feet off the table.” Max’s head rolled to the side and looked at his brother.
“Sorry,” He wasn’t really sorry. “I got really angry and need to cool down before I did something stupid.” Max watched his older brother run his hand over his short dark brown hair. After some thought he collapsed next to his brother; “Where’d you go?”
“If I told you that then you’ll never leave me alone then, would you?” Max’s smart-ass comment earned a ‘light’ punch in the arm. Alice’s face floated in him mind for a moment. He smiled inwardly at the picture of her small smile and laughter. The tiny light beauty mark on her left cheek bone, the other under the left corner of her mouth, just above her chin, her flushed red mouth with its round bottom lip and curvy upper lip, Max wanted to talk and laugh with her again. Watch her bite her lip in thought.
“Hey,” Kieran elbowed him. “I asked a question?” He folder his arms and looked bemused at Max’s face. “You’re making a weird face.”
“Nothing,” Max shrugged on shoulder, all nonchalant and smartass-y. “Just someone I caught.”
“Caught?” An eyebrow raise. “She fell off a wall, I caught her.” Max’s eyes were on the TV, but he vividly remembered the caching and landing incidence.
“Oh it’s a She?” Kieran laughed at him. “What’s her name? Is she…?”
“No she’s not.” Max kept her name to himself and refused to talk to Kieran about her any more. “You know how tricky it is when she’s not like us. It’s hard for humans to accept that there is a world outside their bubble. She’ll think your psycho when you tell her you’re a-” Max looked at his brother.
“Honestly? I really don’t care. Girls like us are total bitches because they can be, and it’s not like I’m gonna tell her on the first date or anything. If there is a date or anything in the future,” Max turned back to the TV and watched without really watching. Max and his overpowering brother lived in the deserted part of town. The city was much larger but after the break out many moved to predominantly human neighborhoods. The ones that stayed because they ether couldn’t afford to buy a new house and move, had be businesses, or just didn’t want to leave their home and hopped that they lived up until now and saw relatively safe future. Max’s house is in the –or was- the richer side of town. He and Kieran lived in a two story, three counting the attic, old Victorian style house with a wraparound porch with red roofing and shutter and wood baize outside. Three days passed and Max never saw Alice. After lessons, he txted his closest friend Connor. ‘Hey, u know a girl named Alice??’ his message read. It took no more than two minutes for him to answer, ‘A riddle?’ Connor asked.
‘NO, a real girl named Alice. Brown hair and eyes, tall-ish… big boobs..’ he cringed at his blunt comment, but Connor got the point. That was one of the first things he notice about every girl.
‘OO lol her. Yeah I know her, y??’ Max growled, and typed furiously. ‘What u know about her?’ ‘She’s nice, funny, cool taste in music, turned me to some bands. Huge boobs as you seem to have noticed…’ Max growled at the screen, Connor was the only person who knew who Max really was, the secret that his brother stresses him to keep. Connor also knew how to push Max’s buttons without really angering him. When Max didn’t answer back, Connor txted him again, ‘I invite her over on Friday, were all hanging in my basement…’ Max’s hope brightened by ten folds. He txted back a quick K then headed to his room. A small, sweet smile twirled his lips.
ALICE
The thick bass thumped through her. The drum beats made the floor hop the CD case rattle against the wall. The guitar ripped up her spine, the singer’s deep voice spoke to her soul, she danced her heart out. Her feet jump to the beat, her hips rolled with the bass, her head whipped nodding to the music, she dance with her full body. Alice, Katie and Sam looked at each other, screaming into their fists as if they were on stage in with the singer in front of a huge screaming audience. They were loud, completely off key and sounded like dyeing cats.
Connor’s Mom appeared at the stairs, but stopped halfway down. Connor noticed and bounced over with a big mom’s boy smile on his face. In his Mom’s world he was at the top of her pyramid, he good little boy who could do no wrong in her eyes. She had pretty loose rules that everyone followed, and Connor enforced. She didn’t even mind when the weirdo that pass through her house eat all her food, or someone is asleep on her couch in the morning that she didn’t see when she went to bed the night before. She’d just make breakfast for them. Connor smiled at his Mom kissed her on the cheek she smiled as she went back upstairs. He stomped over to them and turned down the stereo, then pointed at Katie. “Turn that back up and I will kick your ass.” He moved back over to his seat on the couch. Sam and Alice laughed at Katie as she giggled at Connor’s threat; she loved Connor since they had first met. The girls moved over and sat on the floor. They all sat around the couch a chair or two was pulled up, they played Umbrella.
Alice got up. Sam looked up at her, “Where you going?” “Bathroom, I drank too much soda.” She fibbed. Alice, in truth was a little board and was thinking of going for a walk or leaving. Alice climbed the stair two at a time. She walked slowly through the house, when she reached the bathroom, she looked at herself. She tucked a few strands that had escaped when she was head banging and were sticking out or up straight back into her French braid down the back of her head. Her face was clear, but when she leaned closer she saw every tiny imperfection in her skin. The light beauty marks, her thin weird eyebrows, every little thing that bother her but she accepted because it was her face. She adjusted her t-shirt, then headed back down the hallway looking at all the happy photos of Connor through the ages.
When she reached the kitchen, she stopped. Alice listened to the sound from the basement, and leaned on the counter with a big yawn. Alice poured herself a glass of water. She had just about chugged half of it when there was a knock at the front door. Should I get it? Alice stepped towards the door. Yeah, I can probably fight a robber or who ever came a knocking on my door. Alice smiled at the sassy comment in her head and opened the door. Her heart nearly stopped, she face dropped in shock. Max. His sweet name passed through her mind. He gawked at her; his hair flopped over his face. She watched him reach up, ran his hand thru his hair pushing it to the side. Her brown eyes locked with his deep blue ones.
“Alice,” He breathed, like a sigh of relief. He smiled wide and right at her.
“Max,” To Alice, her voice sounded breathless, her heart was beating a million miles an hour. His grin illumined his face. The little air left in her flew the coop, but she smiled back at him a little wearily. She then realized that she was blocking the door and from him getting in. Even when it was only a little bit on the chilly side he was dressing camo skinny jeans, a plan black T and thick boots. Alice noticed he was lacking a jacket. She darted to the side and opened the door more, hiding a little behind the door embarrassed by her blushing.
“Everyone’s in the basement, I just came up for a glass of water.” Alice said as she closed the door and leaned her back on it. What does he care? She scolded herself. Her eyes were locked on the floor, or, in truth, on his sweet boots. They went up over his ankle and ended not far over that. They were buckles all the way up. She crossed her arms behind her back and shifted her weight from on foot to the other and glanced up. Max was smile happily at her. “Are you coming?” He raised an eyebrow in a suave way. She giggled when he offered his arm; she slipped her hand over his elbow into crook of it. They only paused when she pulled away to finish the glass of water she came upstairs for.
Downstairs, Connor embraced Max, slapped him on the back and stared chatting immediately. Alice moved and sat, pulled her legs up sitting cross legged on the vacant seat on the couch behind her friend Katie. Katie turned and shot Alice a knowing smile, Alice swatted at the back of her friend’s head. Max shoved in between Alice and the girl next to her. He leaned on Alice keeping their thighs press together. Alice peeked at him every so often with a tiny smile barely pressing her lips.
MAX
Max couldn’t help himself from leaning on Alice. She was so warm next to him, her thigh was pressed close to his. Max slid his arms over the back of the floral couch, right behind Alice’s head. Max thought he felt Alice lean ever closer to him, but then again she was talking to him and he couldn’t hear her, it was loud in the basement. Max tilted his head towards her. He smiled when she cupped her hand over his ear, “What time is it?” When Max told her, she popped off the couch, announcing she had to go. Two girls wined and complained. She waved bye, then hugged Connor and thanked him, he grinned and slapped her behind. When she went upstairs, Connor lunged at Max.
“Stop staring and go walk her home.” Connor dragged Max by his shirt throwing Him up the stairs. “Go get her you pathetic loser.” Connor smirked at Max. At the top of the stairs called out, “Alice!” She paused as she was stamping her foot in to her high-topped converse, “Yeah?” She stood up with a questioning look on her face. She makes a cute face when she’s confused. Max stood awkwardly in the kitchen ran a hand threw his red and black hair, “Um,” He scuffed he feet, scratched the back of his head. “Do you mind if I walk you home?” He put a tiny bit of influence in his word. Just a small amount so the choice to say yes was a little stronger but she could still say no. She smiled, looking a little relived as she pushed her hands threw the arms of her jacket. “That’d be great, thank you.” She opened the door then waved her arm for Max to go first.
They walked and talked. Max like the view she had on the world and what she thought of things. He was strongly starting to like the way she laughed at everything, and smiled fully. “I Can’t understand how you like that stuff. They were never meant to go together at all and it’s weird.” Max shrugged.
“I don’t know but that’s just how I like it. It not weird a lot of people put ketchup on their eggs.” Alice shook her head, she glanced down the street before crossing it. “That’s so-” she froze in the middle of the street. Her eyes lock down the road they were crossing, the rumble of an engine and Alice paled. Headlights flashed the next block down. She grabbed Max’s wrist, hauled him across the street and up the block. Alice darted over to a boat covered with a tarp and a big pickup truck parked in an random driveway across the street; Max follow. He was extremely confused about how Alice was acting and worried at the truly terrified look on her face. She crouched down between the two vehicles. The car turned the corner.
“Alice what’s-” she jumped, and shushed him. “Why are we-” she put her hand over his mouth. The car rolled slowly by. Max could see the window down was down, he sniffed the air, the foul smell of dirty wet animal, he ground his teeth hard. What are they doing? Why is she so afraid of them if she doesn’t know what they are? What if she does? Max looked at Alice. Her eyes was closed, her face smooth, she breathed slowly even though her heart raced. Max frowned behind her hand. The car rolled away. Alice took a gasping breath and buried her face in Max’s shoulder wrapping her arms around his neck. She was breathing way to fast, her heart beating too fast. Max stood up and tugged Alice with him. He pulled her head away and regarded her face. Her eyes were big and glassy but she wasn’t crying but she was petrified. Max pulled her back and hugged her. She hugged firmly back, her hand slipped into the hair at the back of his head; she sighed in to his neck. Max leaned his cheek on the side of her head. They stood close embracing each other until Alice’s heart slowed and Max’s sped. He liked have her so close to him, he liked how she felt, smelled, he like the sound of her breathing. So willing to be close, he was hungry. She pulled back but kept her hands on the sides of his neck, her thumb stroking the edge of his jaw. Max pulled his hands back to his sides.
“I’m sorry,” She looked down. “I…just…” She didn’t finish. “Who was that?” She shook her head, “It’s a long embarrassing story, and I don’t want you to know it.” She smiled a small strained smile. Max nodded, and then picked her up. “What are you doing?” She pushed at his shoulder. “You can’t carry me! I’m too heavy! Put me down!” Max met her eyes. Looking deep into them telling her mind to relax, to trust him, to want to be close to him, her body relaxed leaning against him. Her mouth parted and she leaned to him, Max read her thoughts, his wants were becoming her wants too. Max pulled out of her mind, and turned his face away, he want to kiss her on her terms not because she was being controlled by him. He rose up, flying upward. It took not two minutes to land on the walkway up to his front door. He put her down. She blinked briskly, and looked up at him. “My house.” He led her by the hand in and strait to the den. Kieran didn’t need to know she was here.
“Want to watch a movie?” Max asked. Alice sat on the L shaped couch a dazed look on her face. “Yeah, The Breakfast Club?” He popped the movie in and sat in the curve of the couch, kicking off his boots. Alice slid over next to Max, toed her sneakers off then pulled her legs up. Max yawned and slipped his arm around the couch behind Alice. “Smooth,” She grinned and leaned on his chest. By the end of the movie, Alice had fallen asleep on Max. He was stroking her hair. “Alice.” He moved his shoulder trying to wake her up. “Alice.” He crooned in her ear. She lifted her head, her eyes were stilled closed “Humm?” She’s beautiful half awake. Max shifted, laid down on the couch drawing Alice with him. She curled into him, Max wrapped his arms around her. She mumbled his name, Max beamed in the darkness.
ALICE
Alice woke entangled with another warm body. She squinted in the dark room. She remember coming to Max’s house, watching a movie and then…that was it. She couldn’t remember from there. She lifted her head. Max was asleep, the breath left her. His dark hair was over the couch cushion some strands fell over his face, his light red lips parted as he breathed. He looks like a little boy when he’s asleep. Alice moved her hand. It was under his shirt, resting on his bare stomach she reached up and brushed his hair aside, running her fingers threw his hair. He shifted in his sleep, moving closer to her. Alice, just now, realized her leg was wrapped around his hip, his hand slip up her thigh. She pulled away, he pulled her closer. Alice squirmed. He grunted and rolled over letting Alice go. She picked up her shoes, crept out of the room. Sneaking down the stairs and paused at the front door to pull on her shoes.
“Who are you?” a deep voice rumbled from across the room. A tall young man with short dark hair stood across the room. His arms crossed over his chest, he walked slowly over to Alice. His boots thudded on the floor with his steps. Alice watched him, Who is this? “I’m Alice.” He raised an eyebrow. “Did my brother happen to catch you from falling?” Alice nodded, how did he know? “Are you Max’s brother?” He nodded slowly, the same way she had seen Max do. “You’re not one of us are you?” He looked very regal in his sliming pants, high boots and white button up shirt with the sleeves rolled up. She tilted her head to the side, “One of what?” He reached over her and opened the door all but shoving her out the door then slamming it in her face. In the early morning fog, Alice walked home. She recognized that she wasn’t far from where she had first met Max. The sun has just risen; it sat close to the horizon turning the sky a pretty orange and dark pink with purple clouds. Alice knew she most likely should be worried about her aunt and what she will tell her. I’ll just tell her I slept at Katie’s house, she won’t care. Alice turned her thoughts to something more perusable. Max stepped in. Alice’s mind completely detached from the world. She floated off so far that she didn’t hear the car rumble to a stop beside her. When the door open she jumped back, nearly fall over on to the lawn behind her. Two huge thugs grabbed her, twisted her arms behind her back, then shoving her face first in to the back seat.
Luke grinned at her from the driver’s seat; he was lean back, steering with one hand, “Hey.” Alice growled at him, “Up yours.” The werewolves chuckled around her. She thrashed, they laughed as the easily held her back. “What were you doing coming out of that thing’s house?” Alice looked away not saying anything. The car peeled away from the curb.
MAX
Max rolled over. He landed on the floor, his knee smarting from being knocked against the coffee table. He pushed up looking around. Where’s Alice? He remembered falling asleep with her. He got up, lumbered over to the window hoping on one foot, rubbing his miffed knee. The sun was half set, turning the sky a fun purple and orangey pink. Alice would like that. He though, purple’s her favorite color. Max lunged for his phone and dialed her number. Who answered wasn’t Alice.
“Hey, bloodsucker.” The gruff voice rudely bellowed into the receiver. “Where’s Alice?” “Oh, her. I’ve got ‘er. Why? She’d give it up to you already and you’re antsy for more.” He laughed, Max gripped his phone but forced himself to relax before it crumbled in his hand. “Let her go. What does she mean to you?” Max growled. “Why do you care?” Max couldn’t answer. “Well, why don’t you come and find her for yourself. I’ll be a little busy myself.” The werewolf gaffed and hung up. Max let out a vile string of curses damning the world and the creatures of it. Kieran pick the worst moment to step in and voice his opinion.
“What, Kieran? What? You gonna tell me how I shouldn’t get involved? How it’s not my business?” Kieran just crossed his arms, Max let out a deep snarl. “I want it to be my business.” Max banged out the door. He hovered and headed straight to the werewolves hide out. They hid in the old lumber yard warehouse, sometimes threw wild that mostly ended with the cops being called. At the last minute he thought to cloche himself, it was still light enough out to see him.
Max landed on the metal roof, punched through it, peeled it back and jumped down. The werewolves jumped around, most were fully changed; hunched over forms, twice as big as a man, covered with fur with long black claws and short wrinkled muzzles. Luke, only half tuned, laughed loudly. He drowned the rest of his beer bottle, half rolled out of his twisted mouth, a half formed muzzle. “Thought you’d fine us.” The five other werewolves lunged. Max battered them off. Slamming fists into muzzle, crack of crushed bones, click as teeth missed fleshed. One vaulted onto his back, claws in his shoulder. Max grunted, reached back and flung the beast into the wall. The metal was dented, the were didn’t move. The others back off; Max growled and flashed his fangs. “What are you doing? GET HIM!” Luke bellow. He looked around, backing up. He was frantic and desperate, he’d lost control of his army and was weak alone. He seized Alice, gripping her upper arms, his claws dug deep into her. Alice met Max’s eyes. Gratitude, hope and something else made her eyes glow at him, for him. Max stood up strait floating a foot off the ground, wiping his bloody hands on his jeans, “Let her go.” Luke snarled, “No she’s mine now, blood boy.”
Max lunged, Luke sprang. They clashed, clawing, tearing, ripping, and biting at each other. They wrestled, but Max pinned the drunken werewolf to the floor. Growling in his face. “She’s mine. You will never touch her again, unless you’re looking to lose a limb.” Max flashed his fangs in an evil grin. He stood and picked up the Were, tossed him up and landed a blow on his face that the Were stayed in the heap he landed in. Alice was on her side, her head against the floor, watching the scene. Pulling her up, he removed the gag, a dirty washcloth and untied her wrists. She wrapped her arms around him, his arms went around her waist. They floated up towards the hole Max had entered. Luke had recovered and jumped for Alice. His claws ran down her leg, Alice and Max clung to each other. Max flew faster, this time not bothering to cloche Alice and himself. They tumbled into the backyard of Max’s home. Her pant leg was shredded and coated in blood. Max ripped the material away, cutting off mid-thigh. Three long oozing claw marks ran down her calf.
Max’s heart raced. He couldn’t take her to the hospitable, to many questions, not Kieran he’d just let her die. Max knew one thing, but she’d probably hate him for what he is for the rest of her time. Max shook his head as he lowered his face to her leg. He salivated over it. Running his tongue up the bloody marks, his saliva closed the wounds. Her blood tasted sweet to Max. When the gashes were nothing but long red marks, Max sat back keeping his gaze in his lap. Alice touched his cheek, “Thank you.” Max glanced up. She was smiling and leaning close to him.
“It’s my fault this happened. I’m so sorry.” Alice moved his face up and looked deep into his blue eyes. “You saved me. It is never your fault.” “But I’m a-” She put her hand over his mouth, with a playful smile on her face. “I don’t care.” Max smiled and nibbled on the palm of her hand, she giggled. Max reached out, smoothing her wild hair away from her forehead, the tickled her side. Alice laughed and pushed him over onto the grass. Max pulled her close, “So you’re a real…” Leaving the statement open, letting Max fill it in. “Yeah,” He sighed. “And what you did to my leg…” She trailed off again as her eyes flickered down and back to his. “Magic,” he whispered with an awed voice and widening his eyes. She laughed again. I love how I can make her laugh. Max’s eyes went to her lips, but darted back up when he knew she’d never do that, not with him.
Max opened his mouth to say something else to make her laugh, when his lips were busy being kissed. Alice pressed her mouth to his, her eyes were closed. Max stared at her face when she pulled away. He cupped the back of her head and kissed her. His mind stopped all there was, was Alice, the heat of her kiss, and the feeling of floating. She ran her hands threw his hair, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. Their breath came faster and faster, the kisses longer and longer, deeper and deeper. Max felt his heart swell when they parted and heard and felt Alice sigh sedately into his neck. Kissing her forehead, they laid in the grass together. Watching the midnight blue sky and counting the stars as they slowly showed themselves. Max knew he didn’t need anything but that moment right there. With Alice, wrapped in a loving embrace, and nothing but the whispers of the night disturbing their peace together.
