Chapter One- The Giraffe of Wisdom

The Giraffe stood before me, it's pink too-too falling towards its knees billowed in the strange wind and the top hat on its head was titled so that one of it's little horns was sticking out of it. I waited for it to speak, determined to hear its words of wisdom when...it sneezed. The sound rung around us and the snot hit my cheeks with stunning force. I groaned.

"What was that for?" I muttered, rubbing goop off my face.

The Giraffe looked sheepish, "Sorry, allergy season and all."

I frowned at the snot that was now smeared on my sweater sleeve. "What do you want?"

"Who me?" The Giraffe looked up from blowing his nose on his too-too. "Nothing really, why are you a genie? I've been looking for one for quite some time now!"

I rolled my eyes. "I was sort of hoping you'd tell me something...I don't know...wise and important."

The Giraffe looked at me. "Oh. Well, can't help you there. But if you have a question, I'd be happy to answer in whatever way I can!"

I decided to give it a shot. "What...is the meaning of life?"

The Giraffe looked at me with a strange expression, a mixture of amusement and knowledge. "Now that, I can answer."

I waited. It looked at me. I waited. "Well...what is it?" I urged.

"One Thing." And he walked away.

"Hey! That didn't answer anything!" I yelled after him.

"Or did it answer everything?" The Giraffe called over his shoulder, continuing to walk away, its too-too billowing in the wind.

For the first time I looked around. It was a strange place, the grass was green and the sky was blue, but those were the only similarities with the normal world. The tree were blue with yellow leaves and the lake to my right was perfectly crystalline clear all the way down to the very bottom. I walked over to this lake, wondering what it was that made it so clear. Sitting by the lake sat a golden retriever gazing at two fish, one black with a white spot around the eye, the other a white fish with a black spot around the eye. The fish swam in a circle, always together, and the dog never moved. I sat down beside it, feeling a little strange being there.

"Hello Corey." the dog said, his eyes never leaving the fish.

"Oh, hey." I said, a little startled. How did the dog know my name?!

"You wonder where you are." The Retriever said.

I nodded. "Yeah, actually, can you tell me?"

The Retriever scratched his ear with his back paw. "Well, you know better than I."

I thought about that, did I know all the answers? I didn't think so, but maybe I did. What did I know?

My name is Corey. I remember that. I go to High School and I have a brother...yeah, Richie. But what else? How did I get here?

I couldn't remember, but a part of me realized that the only barrier was my own memory. The other part realized that my memory was really hard to penetrate.

"Who..Who are you?" I asked, worried that he wasn't as good and cute as he seemed.

The dog looked at me then, his eyes brown and deep. "My name is Diggory."

"Do you know that weird Giraffe?" I asked, hoping for some amusement.

Diggory gazed at me with a glimmer of humor, "Not even I know his name. And yet he is here all the same. Some say he is rather stupid...others, myself included, believe he is the wisest of us all.

And so there I sat, watching the fish beside Diggory, unsure of anything.
