Chapter One
September 1st, 2011. 7:30am
Dear diary,
It’s been exactly two and a half weeks since Eliza- uh I mean my mother decided to permanently remove herself from the earth; well in physical form that is, maybe she’s still here in the spiritual one? I don’t know. I’m not really into the whole “ghost” thing…anyway, a lot of people think I’m weird because Eli-…my mom’s death never really bothered me that much, but that’s just me. It’s not that I didn’t love or care about her, it’s just that I don’t really like the fact of getting too close to anyone. Family or not…even though my mom is the only family I’ve ever known. Getting close to someone, is just like putting yourself at a risk, for when they’re gone…they take a part of you with them; a really important part, maybe the most important of all, because without that important part, you feel like you’re slowly dying; and that’s what it’s like when they’re no longer with you.
Helena Jefferson.
The first day of high school is never easy, whether you’re new or not. Luckily Helena wasn’t new at Brooklyn High; being new was a bit tougher. Passing through the halls was strenuous. Always busy, packed and worst of all; noisy. In a haste to get to her locker and back to math class, Helena took quick glimpses around the full atmosphere for a few familiar faces. After a couple more looks, she indicated with a strawberry smile that she found some.
“Sophie!” she threw her voice across the clattery hallway to her best friend.
“Hey-I’m com-I’m coming, just a sec- ouch!” Sophie tried to say while trying to carry a million books and get her thick, curly black hair out of a stuck locker.
“Same old Sophia,” someone unexpectedly murmured next to Helena.
“Oh my god, Peter!” she jumped, “Where’d you come from?”
“My mom,”
“I meant as in here,”
“Seriously, my mom gave me a ride this morning.”
“Car troubles?”
“Yeah,” he said passing his fair fingers through the bouncy textured blond hair on his head.
“I don’t know why your c-,” she stared to say when something caught her attention, more so; someone. It wasn’t much like her to stop and stare at complete strangers, but this one caught her eyes. Apparently he was new, considering the fact that he seemed both lost and foreign to her. To her he was….nice. Tall, around 6”1, physically built; ok REALLY physically built, and she could tell that was a fact for sure because the proof was trying to burst its way through his tight fitted black V neck. He looked up for a couple seconds giving her a peek of his emerald green eyes and the sheen in his hair brought out its bronze color. His ivory skin looked so smooth and his-
“Hey guys,” Sophie burst the daydream bubble with her blatant voice same time as the piercing sound of the bell.
“Let’s get to class.” Peter said leading the way to math class.
“Yeah lets-let’s do that,” Helena said while scanning the halls for another look of the mystery guy, but he already vanished.

Dear Diary,
Something really weird happened a while ago, just before class. I can’t even explain it. I’ve never felt that way before or experienced anything like it. What was it? Could it be- no it’s definitely not that…NO WAY!!! I can’t believe I even thought that. I don’t believe in that crap. Maybe Cinderella or Snow White does, but I don’t. It’s probably nothing; it WAS nothing, just a part of my imagination. Anyway, class is about to begin; got to go.
Ps. I DON’T believe in love at first sight…it’s a myth to me.
Helena.
“Okay class, first of all I’ll like to welcome you all back…so welcome,” Mr. Lewis welcomed the class filled with enthusiasm, however he wasn’t as cool as he thought he was. Poor old guy.
“Well I see you’re all still a sour bunch.” he commented when everyone stared blank faced at him “Before we begin today I’ll like to introduce you to a newcomer… Alex?” he called, facing the opened door.
Playing with a pen and not paying much attention to the current events in the classroom, Helena expressed her boredom with a huge yawn that was cut short when Alex McCartney walked into the room and took a seat to the front left of her. The bronze hair, the emerald green eyes and the part she hadn’t gotten to…the smooth, flawless ivory skin was just as she remembered three minutes ago. Oh my god just forget about it Helena… quit looking at him. Why is it so hard? Just one little peek? No-no peeks, focus on math; algebra 2x=3y + oh my god I have to look; she looked. That’s better.
“What is my problem?” she accidently said out loud.
“Lena, are you ok?” Peter whispered from behind her.
“Yeah I’m fine,” she replied.
Math class was only 45 minutes long but it felt like hours to her. When the bell rang, like a bat out of hell, Helena fled the room and straight into another class which thankfully Alex wasn’t there for.
“Hey where were you, we haven’t seen you since you fled math class.” Peter said sitting next to her at a lunch table joined by Sophie two minutes after.
“Sorry I was kind of busy, you know first day,” she replied chewing on a miniature carrot.
“True,” he murmured sinking his perfectly white teeth into the body of a croissant.
“So how was your day Sophie?” she asked “Sophie?” she tried to get her friend’s attention however Sophie was in a trance, focusing on something not too far away. Following her gaze she realized that Alex McCartney was seated a few tables away and his eyes; those gorgeous eyes...were locked in Sophie’s.
“Sophie?” called Helena, but Sophie didn’t budge.
“Sophie?” she called once more this time shaking her friend.
“Yeah?”
“Is everything ok?”
“Everything’s fine,” she said hesitantly taking one last glimpse of Alex.
“Why were you looking at -,” Helena was about to ask when she noticed that Alex already vanished from his vacant lunch table.
The beeping continuously magnified its volume from the deepest part of his pocket as he hurriedly tried to make his way to an area that contained more privacy. The search ended when he quickly slipped into an empty janitor’s closet. Disguised to resemble an ordinary cell phone, he gave the blue knob on the device a gentle touch, allowing a projected image of a man maybe in his 40’s to rise above its surface.
“Nathaniel, have you completed your assignment?” the man asked.
“Not yet sir, I just need some more time.” he said.
“We don’t have much time, I bring bad news,” the man continued “Jonathan is aware of Elizabeth and what she knows.”
“How-how did that happen sir?”
“Long story, just do your part and find Elizabeth Jefferson as soon as possible before Jonathan does, he’s probably already sending out his spies to that dimension,”
“Yes sir.”
“Hurry Nathaniel, we’re depending on you, don’t let us down.”
“I won’t sir, I assure you.” the device went blank and he exited the closet.
“Alex McCartney, what were you doing in the janitor’s closet?” the principal asked on his way to the office.
“I’m sorry sir, I was looking for the bathroom,” he lied.
“Straight down the hall, last door to the right.” Mr. Rupert instructed as he left.
Going in the other direction, he placed his hand back into his pocket, securing the device.
