The True Wealth
First Edition: 2019
“To My Parents and God”
This is Sachin Sarkaniya, Author of this book (obviously you know!).
You might be wondering why i was too obsessed to write this book and want you to read? My frustration of poverty, Job, and people, who are a worshipper of it, urged me to go after money and live the life the way I had desperately wanted. Financially, My childhood had been terrible; My father was not as rich, thus, I had to settle with cheaper, shoddy toys and clothes.
Lack of money even pinched me during my college days and sometimes, I used to feel like quitting college and getting a job, in order to live lavishly. I had observed that my friends, who had jobs, could bear their own expenses, buy the latest smartphones and much more. I decided to work as soon as i am done with college. My perception was; earn money, aṣccumulate wealth and happiness will become your beloved roommate.
But when I did start working, Just within a few months, the illusion of money and wealth shattered and I found myself stuck in a job I hated more than my nasty, uncouth neighbors. I had lost the freedom of choice, and never got enough time to play my favorite games. In fact others, who I was working with, felt the same way but did not have the courage to fix their life.
Therefore, I began my quest to find out what true wealth is, for which, I went through several articles on the internet, read various books and interviewed folks around me. Eventually, It was clearer to me that only having wealth does not guarantee a happy and prosperous life. I also realized that since most of the people have not got as much time to find out what true wealth is, I should write a small, simple, yet effective book for folks like you. I believe this book will be helpful to you. If so, Don’t forget to recommend it to your friends and family members.

November 2009, it was yet another mundane day of our school life. No teacher was going to look after us (merit of being at a government-sponsored school); some of my friends were scrawling lewd pictures in the school diary, while others were indulged in household chit-chats. Since I used to be a coward, timid teenager back then, I was among them and took a deep interest when it came to revealing what our fathers actually used to do in order to earn modest bread and better for our respective families.
Superiority complex played a vital role here and each of us bragged about how hardworking and passionate our godly fathers were; “My father leaves home as early as 6 in the morning and arrives at home after the entire DID episode has been aired,'' One of our classmates told us.
While he was narrating his father’s glorious life, we could notice his expressions as if he were the son of a soldier, whose father would prove his mettle at fatal borders. All my naive fellows (including me) got flabbergasted by his father’s heroic and enduring lifestyle.
All of us had the same story; the same old father, who worked round the clock, often skipped family functions, major festivals( for the sake of extra cash as a bonus), but remained broke most of his life. But among us, there was someone who shocked us by his personal experience. Abhijeet, who is still one of my best friends, penned about his father in this way: “My father is an uncouth man, he doesn’t work and reclines most of the time on the sofa, watching retro movies.”
“So how do you manage household expenses? Does your mom have a job?” I asked him curiously. “No, not at all. We have rented three rooms in our house that are our primary source of survival.” This is why my father never worked a day in his life, he knows that even if he doesn’t earn a single penny, We will be surviving, Abhijeet said with a lower tone.
At that point in time, I could not get the hang of his father’s strange way of nurturing his kids. For me, He seemed to be a selfish, somewhat shirker who loved his bed tea more than his own kids. “Everyone is supposed to get a job or business. Work there, earn some money and fulfill your fatherhood”, I mumbled slowly lest Abhijeet may get hurt.
But the reality was far different than what I actually had estimated. The real truth would cross my path just after 10 years. In 2019, the acrimonious yet universally accepted and abided by truth came into limelight when I bumped into the concept of financial freedom. I still vividly remember the day I laid my hands on a book, which not only changed my life but brought my ever-lasting expedition of seeking for a mentor to its end.
And what that truth is? Ok, let’s play a game here, I am going to hint you and you have to guess what it really is……..
Whether you are a Muslim or Mexican, English or Indian, Chances are if your age is above 25, it is 11’o clock now in the morning and you are sitting in front of a stupid machine as if you were yourself a programmed robot. The best part is, your soul always opposes the way you are squandering your youth, time and energy. Sometimes, it also feels caged and captivated in infinite incarceration that would probably be followed religiously for the next 35-40 years. However, No one is interested in heeding this uncanny way of living life.
Everyone is adhering to the same verdict; get up even if you don’t want, wrestle with obnoxious city traffic and weather, spend more than 9 hours with people you mostly hate on this earth and then get back home tired, sad and hopeless, akin to a batsman dismissed on a duck. I call it “catastrophic circle” or CC which is a never-ending loop where 98% of adults, who consider them smart, handsome and intelligent, struggle for their entire life. To have a clearer picture of what I want to explain, check out the below picture and observe it diligently:-
Except for the daily lackluster and tiresome schedule, you are not allowed to do what you desire to do, even when it is an emergency. Someone ill at home? No chance pal, move your ass to the office. Family function? Forget it, the boss does not care even if it is your own birthday…………...
If this had happened with you or still happens, Congratulations my friend, you are no more unique than others (as your FB status roars). The most imperative and worth discussing point here is; the Catastrophic circle is not a day’s event; Rather, It will go with you inside your holy grave (unless you are lucky enough to remain alive to witness the day of your retirement).
Realizing the above truth made me feel despondent for many weeks as I found myself being cog of the same wheel. But at the same time, I could muster up the courage to take over my life’s control from a third party-also known as Boss or company.
Let’s see what my perception is right now about my friend’s father. He still doesn’t have a full-time job and is mostly found sauntering around Local Park and at the cricket ground. At one of the late-night-after-dinner-walks, I told Abhijeet that finally, I have found what I am meant to be. Obviously, Abhijeet was desperate to know that after spending years in a government school without having a clearer career purpose, I was eventually blessed to have discovered my final destination. “ So, what is it?” He asked inquisitively. And here was my answer, “ I would love to live like your father”.
“Are you kidding me?'' He reacted. “ No, I am not”, I replied firmly.
Just the opposite of what I had predicted, he kept on laughing till I interrupted him. “See, I am unable to get the hang of your decision and perception you have about my father”, Abhijeet made a serious remark.
“I knew you would make fun of me, But let me tell you why your father is my idol. First, He has not wasted his precious time and energy to make someone else rich. Second, though not as rich, yet he is free to choose what his heart says. He can play cricket on Monday, go to watch movies on Tuesday, attend any function on Wednesday and so on.
Now tell me, What else do you want? Your family will never die of starvation since your father receives a decent amount of rent, which is enough for your entire family’s survival”, I explained to him as much as I could. Now, my points made him think for a while and I got his approval hidden in his deep silence.
Basically, My motive is not to live as others are living. In reality, they are not living at all. Rather, it should be called “severe survival”, which is a prevalent tradition in wildlife. The universal food web depicts how animals are supposed to hunt every single day. Skipping a day without prey means losing the ability, energy to hunt and embracing death wholeheartedly. Similarly, not working for a day or month means you will find it somewhat difficult to meet ends.
In case you are going to brag about your gargantuan bank balance, hold on pal and add me something interesting; to maintain your wealth, you have to sell your time and stick to your nasty job. The craving for earning more compels you to work more hours, sacrifice family and personal time, and this is indeed one day going to establish a vast tower of wealth, but the point is, Is it true wealth? Does your bank account and expensive Smartphone make you look rich and wealthy? Certainly not, how wealthy you are, is not decided by how much cool stuff you have got at your shelf, but how much free time you possess to do what your heart craves for.
And this is what true wealth is. A few years ago, I read one quote written by one of the technological entrepreneurs on Instagram, which goes like this, “the number of days one can survive without selling his time is the real and most appropriate definition of wealth.” Ultimately, according to the definition, when one is able to pay his bills on time for a month, He is rich for a month and has an option to do away with the catastrophic circle we had seen a few paragraphs before.
In upcoming chapters, we will go through some concepts, examples and case studies that will open your eyes and present harsh truth before you.
15th August 1947, our country was finally free after a hundred years of slavery, First by various invaders and then by East India Company (a.k.a. Britishers). Now, we live in a democratic country called India, where everyone has the same rights; irrespective of his religion, beliefs, and castes. Right to vote, Right to speak, Right to education and so on. You can choose whatever school you want to get enrolled in, the restaurant you would love to eat at, or any movie theatres you wish to visit.
