I knew there were Shifters who didn’t believe In finding their true mate. Hell, I wished I could say I wasn’t one of them. Unfortunately, I knew better from personal experience—and not the good kind. I met Kyle Johnson when I was sixteen and fell for him immediately. I lost my parents the year before in a fire, so he took me in. He was five foot ten tall with red hair and green eyes. He loved hunting And he made me feel safe—which only made sense since he was a firefighter, after all. Things progressed quickly between us, and three years into our relationship, Kyle convinced me to move into his house with him and his brothers. He always made time for me and treated me like a princess. I thought things between us were amazing. Then he wanted me to quit college. Kyle didn’t like the way others looked at me while I was UCLA. Kyle finally convinced me that I should go to the community college close by where he worked. However, each time I found a new friend, he found reasons why I shouldn’t hang out with them. He was so convincing in his arguments that I just gave up. Little by little, everything from my life that wasn’t connected to him was removed. He was the only thing I had left, and then things got worse. He didn’t like my hair color, so he had me dye it and cut it short. He drilled into my head that I was the most beautiful null he ever saw— I’m not a null I just don’t let anyone know what I am. Then he started clawing and whipping me. It was painful every night in bed. And he was considerably stronger than me since I’m only five foot three and a hundred and thirty pounds. There was never any apologies. He certainly didn’t ask for any forgiveness. Instead, he gave me a warning that nobody would believe a bitch null like me if I told them what happened since he was a firefighter and was a respectable member of the community. It was then that it dawned on me he’d known exactly what he was doing when he hurt me. If it came to his word against mine, he would have had the advantage, plus no one would ever see the scars because it had become a habit for me to let them see a normal looking girl. Although I’d allowed him to dominate my life, I wasn’t a weak person, nor was I stupid. Kyle liked to make me think I was both. Hell, there were a lot of things I wished I had done differently back then, but I was determined to make better choices going forward. I was able to get into the police academy. The day of graduation, another four years later, his eyes held anger when he realized I was going to leave him. He immediately took me home and beat me and raped me. I knew that making his friends on the force unwilling to help was getting him to not able to file a report with me missing. I disappeared the very same day, taking with me our dog. I turned my phone off so if he traces me, he won't find me. I went to the animal park and from there I headed to a runaway shelter and stayed for a week—long enough for Kyle to file a missing person’s report on me On the morning of the last day, I took a taxi back to our home, Kyle was surprised to see me walk in the door. His boss and two of his cop friends who were with him at the time watched as he checked me all over before asking me if I was okay and pulling me into a hug, asking where the hell I had been.
“I was visiting my parent's graves,” I answered. “Did you forget?”
The guys left after a quick drink, and I paid for making him look like a buffoon in front of his boss and friends. He was careful not to leave any marks. I suffered many more weeks of his insults and demands for sex. I acted like his good little girl for a whole two years before I went to a fellow officer who knew what was going on. I stayed with him and his wife for an entire week. And when I came back I told him I had gone to the beach to spread my parents’ ashes since it was the five-year anniversary of their death. When I overheard his friend telling Kyle to get a grip, I knew I could survive one more week when I left that day, I wouldn’t have to come back. Making his friends think he was wrong about the times I was gone before had taken away a lot of his resources. My hope was that it would give me enough time to get away. I hadn’t counted on him leaving me tied to the bed, I called one of my friends for the first time in months. I explained I needed his help. He parked down the street so nobody would see him when crept into my house and cut the rope. He was a cop in a different division Jason didn’t ask too many questions—he had been the most vocal about how much he didn’t like Kyle and the first friend he’d cut out of my life. When we got to the train station he went inside and bought me a ticket on the first train leaving town. He gave me a bag of his boyfriend's old clothes and an envelope stuffed with cash, he told me that he had been waiting for when I was ready to escape and I should run hard and fast. I ran for two years. I’d moved from place to place, never staying too long and always looking over my shoulder. Eighty days of freedom had passed, and I was finally ready to settle down in a new place for good. When I pulled out a map and looked a little bit more to the south, Lupine Hill jumped out at me, so I went there. The town was smaller than what I thought it was. The sign for a place called The Wolf Diner caught my eye. I was starving. I went to the station first and asked if I could speak to the sheriff. It was bigger than it had appeared from the outside. It was bright, with dyed wood paneling that matched the granite floors. It was early afternoon, but there were already people inside, but then the smell got to me. I had unknowingly came into Werewolf territory. The guy behind the service desk was handsome you could tell he knew it. He watched me with a smirk on his face as I walked towards him.
“What can I do for you?” he asked.
“I need to speak to the Sheriff about getting a job here.”
He chuckled underneath his breath before saying. “You do not want to work here tiny sweetheart.”
“Look, I don’t fucking care. I’ve been trying to find a place to stay without prejudice. Now may I speak to your sheriff?”
“C’mon. Give her a chance, Drew,” one of the guys sitting in a cell offered in support. “I wouldn’t mind seeing her around here whenever I’m brought in drunk.”
“Fuck,” Drew muttered. “I’m sure you’d all love to have her work here. Andreas would be pissed at me.”
“Please,” I muttered, letting some of my fear show in my eyes.
Dree breathed in deep through his nose and shook his head as he looked at me before he answered. “Go to Eclipse Paw bar and grill. My brother who owns the town should be there. If not one of our two other brothers should be. We don’t have a Sheriff.”
“Thank you,” I replied.
“Don’t thank me yet. Wear jeans and t-shirt. Most of the guys at the bar will want to have you.”
“Shut the fuck up,” I muttered as I left.
I ate a small lunch at the diner and raced back to the inn. When I got to the bar I smelled shifters. I walked up to the bar and asked to see Andreas Rivera. The guy said his brother wasn’t in. He told me his name was Peter. It was nearly dark outside. He was six feet of pure handsomeness, with almost black hair and eyes that reminded me of melted chocolate. I told him I was looking for a job at the sheriff station and he seemed doubtful. I looked at him with a smile and he sighed.
“You can have the Sheriff’s spot for now, but if Andreas doesn’t want you as sheriff you leave town.”
I nodded.
He made a call to Drew and in a language, I knew was Spanish he said something. Half an hour later he told me to go back to the station in the morning. And that’s when I met Andreas Rivera, one hell of a devilish package. I knew that if they found out I was a Werejackal I could be killed. But Andreas he was something.
I glanced around the station and until something Drew said caught my full attention.
“You all did what?” I growled.
There was no way he’d just hire a damn human, so I had to have missed something.
“What the fucking hell were we supposed to do Andreas?” he growled back. "We tried telling her, no, but you should’ve smelled the fucking fear on her. She could be smelled by the people at the bar and you know how most of us are about women who smell like fear.”
“It’s gonna fucking bite you in that ass of yours someday, too,” I warned him. “Like today when I kick yours and our other two brothers because you know damn well that we don’t hire humans.”
“I know,” he grumbled. “But we told her she has the job unless you tell her. She can come in, try it out and then hit the road if you don’t like her. It’s not like we promised her the damn job or anything.”
“Which part of ‘we don’t hire humans' do you not understand? You know our lives are at stake, and I don’t like the idea of putting the pack at risk for some human we don’t even know.”
“I’m asking for one shift, bro. Do me a favor and let her work today. She’s gonna be here in half an hour. Maybe we’ll get lucky and she’ll be the perfect mate for one of the guys. Problem solved, right? She was average even though she’s a tiny thing,” he tried to reason with me.
My brother was a sucker for a woman in distress. All they had to do was smile at him and make up some lame story and he wanted to save them from all their troubles. Be their fucking sweet knight in shining armor.
“Fine. I’ll give her today, but that’s it.” I conceded, which was a lucky thing for the human girl in question, because, without my approval, she’d be out on her fucking ass no matter what my younger brothers had told her earlier.
“Thanks,” he was saying as I tuned him out because Nicky suddenly pushed for control.
I reined him as hard as I could and was surprised by how difficult he was being. He pushed against the barriers again, wanting out. There and now. Then the scent of wet pine and cocoa drifted my way and Nicky wanted to know where it was coming from so he could put our scent all around in it. Drew was looking over my shoulder with a sweet smile on his face. A growl crept up my throat when I saw the flirty gleam in his chocolate eyes as I turned to see who he had been looking at. She was the plainest girl I’d ever seen but she was beautiful in her own way. Nicky and I both wanted to fuck her till she couldn’t walk. Everything I’d thought I would never want. Her tiny frame looked practically breakable by Werewolf standards. I had to be at least a full foot and a half taller than she was and more than a hundred pounds heavier. She looked nothing like our females, who were tall, lithe and athletic. She had curves that were just begging to be touched.
Licked.
Sucked.
Bitten.
Her breasts were straining against the blue fabric of the collared shirt she wore. She looked nothing like a wolf. Her big almond eyes were beautiful and one was a smokey grey the other a dark blue-grey. They flashed with something as the chemistry between us was set a flame. I heard her let out a shaky breath before she looked up again. Only this time, her eyes didn’t look at me, she smiled over my shoulder at my brother. Nicky who’d been howling in appreciation as I’d been staring at her, quickly turned to snarling at the sight of her smiling at Drew. I swiveled my head to glare at him.
“Shit, Andreas. You’re going to make me tell her no?” Drew muttered under his breath.
“You misunderstand me. She’s hired. Permanently,” I growled.
Drew’s eyes widened in surprise before he glanced at us.
“She’s my mate. Spread the word. She’s mine even if I haven’t claimed mated with her yet. If anyone fucking messes with her, then they will have to pack up their asses and leave. You make it damn clear that I don’t want any bullshit about this. You got me?”
“Yeah, man. I’ll take care of it,” he promised. “But are you really sure about this?”
I inhaled deeply and I wish I hadn’t. She might be human and a stranger, but her scent drew me like no other wolf or human did. It called to Nicky and made him demand that I take her and fuck her senseless. And he didn’t want me to wait to do anything about it either.
“Hey, Drew,” she greeted my brother.“I hope you don’t mind that I’m an hour early.”
The sound of her voice made me want to growl. It was damaged. Someone had hurt my mate.
“Not at all,” Drew replied. “It means you have a chance to meet my oldest brother, Drew. He owns the town.”
Her gaze shifted to me and her eyes widened, a hint of something entering them for a brief moment.
“Hi,” I said softly.
She trembled slightly when she looked past us. I could smell the surprise coming off of her in waves. She walked up to one of the new officers who was mates with my youngest brother.
“Jason, what are you doing here?” I heard her ask.
I heard him gasp in surprise.
“What the hell are you doing here Vera? You can’t be here. Ian will find you. He’s been searching for you. Normally, I wouldn’t care because of who you are, but I can’t see you be here and to have it be any different with the pack here.”
“Can we talk about this over lunch?” She glanced at us before she gave him an object and walked back to us.
Nicky paced inside me at the thought of her talking to another man. He wanted out so he could mark her as his and warn off all the other Werewolves—even the new officer. I nodded my head in her direction of the back room and she stepped in front of me as we walked to the back of the bar. I watched the sway of her ass with each step she took and had to resist the pull to shift and mark her. I could so easily picture my cock driving into her warm pussy. She had that unique smell that called to me even if she wasn’t my mate—one that my pack members had noticed judging by the stares that followed her as she made her way across the room. I leveled a glare at each of them, warning them off. One by one, they lowered their eyes in respect, baring their necks in the process. None of them wanted to anger me. I was their alpha. They might not have realized yet that she was going to be my mate, but they weren’t stupid enough to miss my frustration at their even daring to look at her. I took her to my office, sat in the seat across from my desk when she did she had sat down in a submissive way, and I could see her knuckles whiten as she clasped her hands tightly in her lap. When I closed the door behind me, she jumped in her seat. Not wanting to startle her again, I walked behind my desk, slowly and sat down. Her scent changed from nervousness to outright fear, and I realized that it was likely she was running from someone. Based on her reaction to me and how Drew and Peter described her, my guess was it was a man. Someone Nicky and I would enjoy killing if ever given the chance. It didn’t matter what had brought her into my life. I would handle whatever situation she’d found herself in, because the moment I saw her—no when I smelled her scent, I wasn’t letting go of my mate. No matter who or what tried to stand in my way. It might sound overprotective to some, but there were many reasons why I was the alpha of the pack. Honesty was just one of them.
“I didn’t catch your name,” I said, starting off the conversation.
“Stark,” she said after clearing her throat. “Vera Stark.”
I liked the sound of her voice. It shook slightly and made me think about how she’d scream my name as I drove inside her.
Mate, Nicky howled in my head upon hearing her speak again. He and I were in agreement—Vera Stark was our mate. As an alpha, I was to have confidence and think rationally. My pack depended on me to make decisions quickly and without regret. But sitting in front of my mate for the first time I was struck by a moment of self-doubt. How would I be able to hold Nicky back long enough for her to come to accept what all of us were, I knew the guy had mentioned the pack, so maybe she knew. Especially since her eyes still held fear as they gazed up at me. I knew I needed to proceed carefully so I didn’t scare her off. I didn’t want her to feel the need to run again. I knew that if she ran I would go after her and leave my pack behind.
“So Drew mentioned you might tell me I couldn’t have the job when I was here earlier,” she said in a shaky voice. “So did your brother Peter at the bar.”
“I’m sure they did,” I muttered, frustrated to hear their names on her lips yet again. Why the hell did I put him in charge of the damn bar when I wasn’t around anyway? If I’d been here instead, she would have met me first and I would have been the one who would tell her she could have the job of sheriff. Maybe then she’d be more comfortable around me and not my damn brothers.
“It’s okay that they gave me it temporarily, right?” Vera asked. “More than okay,” I reassured her. “You can be our sheriff.”
Her eyebrows shot up and her mouth dropped open in surprise. Then she bit her lips nervously before responding.
“But Drew and Peter said you wouldn’t want me to have the job, that I’d have to leave town?”
“They don’t know what they are saying half the time,” I murmured, tossing a grin her way.
She relaxed slightly and she smiled at my attempt at flirting.
“I’ll be here on time, work hard, and won’t date the other officers since you are my mate.”
The very thought of any of my pack mates touching Vera had a snarl creeping up my throat.
“Damn straight you won’t,” I snapped, and softly I asked. “How did you know that?”
“Not that it’s any of your concern, but I was in a pack before I left it.” she hissed back with a little shake in her voice, a spark lit her almond-shaped eyes.
“All you need to know is that, if you hire me, I won’t cause any trouble for you.”
“Your our new sheriff, if you still want the job,” I said.
“Yes, I want the job.” On the occasions I couldn’t be here watching over her, I would have Jason and Drew watching her.
“And don’t even think to have your pack members watch out for me.” She snapped. “I can take care of myself, just most don’t realize it.”
The feeling I’d long since learned to trust told me that she was hiding something.
“Something to keep in mind: sometimes hiding stuff let’s trouble follow us even when we’ve thought we've left it behind. If I had to guess this Ian person did something to hurt you?”
I'd allowed the mate attraction for Andreas to lull me into a short sense of security, especially after what I had gone through with Ian. My walls crumbled down because there was something about him being a Werewolf that scared me. I wasn't sure I could explain it. But all of it disappeared when he mentioned Ian's name. I stood up, shaking and ran out. I needed to shift to get my anger out. As soon as I was outside I got into my truck and drive to the park I saw when I drove into town. I parked and got out. I left everything in my truck and ran into the woods. I shifted and started to run. I stayed in my jackal form for a month. That's when I found out Ian had gotten me pregnant. Andreas and his pack had found my truck and no sign of me. When I was in jackal form I smelled like a jackal and when I was human I smelled like a human. It was because of the experiments Ian had done on me when I was sleeping. Three months later I was showing more. I decided to go walk around in town pretending to be a coyote. Since I looked a lot like one. I was walking across the street and didn't notice the jeep till it hit me. I was tiny and they couldn't have to see me because I was small. As I laid there in the street bleeding as Nia my jackal checked on the baby, I saw Andreas and his brothers and one who I assumed was the other brother. Peter checked me out and next thing I know I could feel the need to change back into my human form. I let Nia take over. She bit Peters' hand and got up slowly. She ran limped away. When she was sure she lost them she ran into an abandoned factory and gave control back to me. I ran into the abandoned office of the factory and shifted back. But as soon as I did I wished I hadn't.
"Oh my god. Vera?"
I turned to face them as I held onto the desk for support. I let out a growl as I put wait on my injured leg. I let out a yelp and Andreas started walking over. I snarled at him before he could reach me. I let out a shaky breath before I started talking.
"I'm so sorry, Andreas. I'm so sorry." I cried as I placed a hand on my bump that was showing under my loose shirt.
"Vera, why didn't you tell us?"
"I didn't know how and then when I met Ian. I didn't want him to know so I told him I was a null. Which was true enough I had forgotten how to shift. I'm sorry."
I shifted and looked at him once before running off. It was a mistake to even think about staying. I ran for three months till I came to Dragon territory. And for thirty-five years I never aged. But I knew my mate was.
Present Day
"Mom there's a pack of wolves coming onto the territory. They want to talk to whoever is in charge." My son Rain said.
"Werewolves?"
He nodded.
I stood up and got my crutches. I had to have my leg amputated because of the infection from a black widow shifter. I sighed and followed Rain outside where three of the officers were in their Dragon form. Geoff the smallest of the three picked me up with his tail and placed me on his back. My son shifted into his Dragon form and looked at me. I nodded and they took off flying to the territory line. As we got close I smelled my mate and his brothers and a few others I didn't recognize. They landed and Geoff placed me on the ground holding me still as Rain handed me my crutches. I was hidden from my mate and the other Werewolves.
"Who's in charge here?" My mate asked.
"Our Alpha is gone so you'll be speaking to his second." Geoff snarled at him.
I smiled up at Geoff and he moved so they could see me. I hobbled forward with the crutches and Andreas stood there in shock. As soon I was close to him. I kissed his cheek.
"Andreas, I'm sorry."
"What happened to you?"
"Black Widow Shifter. It was spreading fast." I explained. I looked at Rain and nodded.
He shifted back into his human form and walked over to us.
"Rain this is Andreas, my mate I ran from. Andreas this is my son Rain. Ian is his father. His father in law is the Alpha of this pack. I knew him from when I was in the academy."
"Vera, Milani wants you back," Geoff said. "Gayle's awake."
I nodded.
"Who's Gayle?" Andreas asked.
"I got really drunk one night almost died and well I have another kid."
Andreas' eyes flashed anger but then they turned to understanding.
"Who?"
"Devan Redstone. The Alpha. He got drunk because his wife died. Me I was trying to forget you. A lot of everyone here got drunk six years ago." I mumbled, to Geoff I said. "Show them around and then take them back to the pack house."
He nodded and I shifted. I made sure Geoff had my crutches and I ran off back to the pack house. When I got there I shifted before grabbing the spare crutches from outside. I went inside and I saw someone who I never wanted to see again. Ian. He had Milani by the throat and holding a jackal pup by the scruff of his neck. Gayle. I let out a growl.
"I'll let them go if you come back with me and I won't have Missy poison your other leg." He said.
I looked at Gayle and Milani and my fear began to get worse. I didn't want them to die. My voice wouldn't work so I thought out towards him.
Very well. Let them go, Ian. But let me put my son to bed first.
"Fine." He snarled.
He tossed me Gayle and I caught him. He shifted back and looked at me with his tear stained face. I took him to his room and put him in his bed. I kissed his forehead and told him to tell Alpha Wolf I will miss him too and that I had to do it. That I'm the reason no one was aging. He nodded and grabbed his stuffed wolf and pretended to talk to it. I turned to look at Ian and nodded. I followed him outside and he shifted into his Dragon form and picked me up with his claws. He flew off with me as I welcomed the darkness.
The smell of fear filled the air. We all shifted and followed it to a nice huge house. A Dragon flew off with something in its claws. A little jackal pup was barking at it. It shifted into a little boy who started screaming.
"Mammy."
Geoff ran up to him.
"Gayle, what happened?" He asked.
"Badman took mammy and Milani is knocked out. I want mammy Geoff."
"We'll get her back. Did mammy say anything?"
"She told me to tell Alpha Wolf that she will miss him too and that she had to do it. That she was the reason none of us were aging." He cried.
Vera was stubborn but she was always sacrificing herself. I let out a howl and my pack joined me. Gayle ran up to me.
"Are you Alpha Wolf?"
I nodded.
"Mammy said she'll miss you."
We'll find your mammy, little jackal. I'm not going to lose her again.
I shifted and ran off with my pack in the direction the Dragon went. We had to find her. She was my mate. My love. My life.
