“According to Greek mythology, humans were originally created with four arms, four legs, and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves.”
-Plato, the Symposium
He was tall, dark and handsome… and standing at the end of my driveway?
As Nina walked out of her house to get the mail, she stopped short when she realized there was someone standing by the green, old mailbox looking at her. But he wasn’t just anyone. No, he was an extremely attractive someone who had black tousled hair and was at least a half foot taller than her. It was then she noticed that he had crossed her lawn and had to be only a couple of inches away from her because she was staring right up and into his… magnificent eyes. Holy crap. It can’t be possible to have eyes that amazing…
She was so intrigued by the crystal- like grey eyes that everything around them blurred but she quickly forced herself to focus, thinking she should say something, yet she couldn’t remember how to speak. Thankfully, the silence was broken when he said the most peculiar thing that she later learned would make her the most complete person alive.
“I finally found you.” Was all he said with a slight smile, that Nina knew, was a smile that only surfaced for her.
Thursday morning. Ugh. Thursdays are the biggest tease. It feels like a Friday, but, no, still one more day until the weekend.
Nina strolled down the hallway of her high school, stifling a yawn and wishing she hadn’t stayed up to finish that book. On the way to her locker she looked around and watched as the people she had been walking by for four years now did all the same things they did every morning. One couple was already making out and it was only seven in the morning. Although she wasn’t one for publicly displaying stuff like that, Nina couldn’t help but feel a pang of jealousy. She had her fair share of relationships and knew that she did not need a guy to make her happy, but she had been single for nearly half a year now as everyone else around her had somehow managed to fall in love.
“I never thought I’d say this, but I’ve become one of those pathetic girls who really want a relationship.” Nina blurted out to Maddie as she walked up slipping her coat off.
“Ha! Join the club.” Nina’s naïve best friend replied.
Madeline would never admit it, but she goes through guys like it was her job. She wasn’t as bad as other girls who could be labeled something, but it was definitely noticeable to Nina who knew everything about this girl. Maddie was a year younger which made her a grade below Nina, but Maddie was very mature for her age…to an extent. She was a great friend and someone Nina could always confide in and trust, but recently Maddie had gotten close with a new girl and Nina knew that she had been bad mouthed by them already. She tried to not let it affect her and their friendship and decided against confronting Maddie about it because she was the only person she had ever gotten this close to. None the less, it was still very hurtful to think about because she still felt as if she was being replaced and that scared her. Nina had also realized long ago that Maddie was the type of person who was a follower not a leader. She could form her own opinion, but rather expressing it and being her own person, she would just go along and agree with whatever the people she was hanging with were saying, even if that meant being a complete and total bitch.
Now as they began their daily ritual, walking through the hallway and rambling about ridiculous and nonsensical things, Nina couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if she finally just stopped being friends with Maddie? It would be such a relief to not have to feel like she was being replaced and she wouldn’t have to put up with Maddie’s shit anymore. But on the flip side…as much as she didn’t want to admit it, Nina needed her. Who was she supposed to walk around school with and crack jokes with for the last couple weeks of school? Nina had put so much delicate time and effort into trying to be happy her senior year it was almost unbearable to think about trying to walk around her high school without her friend. This school held so many memories for Nina…her struggle to overcome depression and re-find herself…she was finally content and then a little thing like this had to happen and all she could do was try to just breathe through it.
Inhale the good, exhale the bullshit Nina. You know you don’t actually need her. And as soon as school is over with, you’ll be out of here and you’ll never have to see any of these people again, including Maddie.
Nina took a deep breath and said a fair well to Maddie before hurrying off to her first period. As soon as she entered the gym, Nina felt a rush of glee flood through her. She loved gym, but especially the game they were playing today: Mat Ball.
Great way to start off the day!
Nina thought with a grin starting to spread across her face. Kick some ass in mat ball then go to three more periods and I’m outta here for the day.
Plus side to being a senior, Nina only had four periods to deal with and then she left for the day.
A little while later in economics, Nina was doodling in her notebook and glancing at the clock every two minutes waiting for the bell to ring. Final period of the day always drags on forever. I just want to go home and sleep.
Ding…ding…ding…ding
Springing out of her chair, Nina raced for the door and left the classroom. They really should think about making those bells less annoying.
Stopping by her locker, she grabbed her jacket and headed downstairs to leave. It was close to the beginning of summer, but it still had a slight breeze so a denim jacket was still required. As she exited the building it had gotten warmer and the sun was shining overhead, perfect day for a walk. Not that she had choice anyway, her parents couldn’t really afford to help her get a car and Nina hadn’t saved enough up yet to get the one she wanted so it would just have to wait a little while longer. She lived relatively close to the school anyways so she didn’t mind. Actually, she enjoyed the daily walks quite a bit. Nina had always had a knack for nature, could never get enough, especially flowers. She loved them and just sitting in a meadow full of them made her happy.
Before she knew it, Nina was home and trudging up her lawn to the front door, digging out her keys. And before she would know it, her whole life would change in just a couple hours from now on this exact lawn.
