At The Gardens Gate
by Joseph P Hradisky Jr
I dedicate this book to my loving wife and my two sons, Alec and Ian.
All characters involved are fictitious and any representation to any persons living, or dead, does not exist.
I have never seen the stars shinning so brightly as they did now.
Other than the face shield of my flight helmet there was nothing to obstruct the view. An overwhelming view which left me feeling so alone and indistinct. I knew there were other ships around me, I just could not see them for being the lead ship. The same was true of the Earth behind me. I knew the planet was there but for the moment it was unseen. Yet the Earth was the very reason why I was here, in space.
Technically, because of high training marks, I was the leader of T-squadron, which was on continuos patrol around the Earth. Which consisted of 12-hour days for five days straight. By all rights the patrol was not really needed at the present time. War no longer existed on Earth; there were no separate nations who fought over such things as food, water, land, oil, or religions. Nowhere in the world was there people starving to death. Housing had been built for everyone; the barriers between the rich and poor had fallen. Everyone had everything they wanted or needed. It was definitely a time of plenty, of equality, and happiness as the whole planet became united under one government. After centuries of war, peace had finally come to Earth.
The idea of this peace was the very reason why I was sitting in the cockpit of an armed fighter ship. A few of the founding leaders, of the New Earth Alliance, had come up with possible problems for the future of our world. They asked, “What if, after years of watching, some outside force didn’t want the Earth to be united?” or “What if these beings decided it was time to act to ensure the inhabitants of Earth never made it into space?” and possibly “What if these hostile forces arrived before more friendly ones?”
The topic was hotly debated with the end result being the formation of a special unit
