“Miss. Reed!” My head shot up and I looked around confused. “May I ask why you were sleeping in my classroom?” Ms. Fitzgerald walked around my desk with a look of displeasure on her Botox filled face. I looked at her with sleepy eyes and wiped the drool from my tan face. “Well,” I said stretching my arms, “your class is pretty boring and I didn’t get much sleep last night.” I said giving her a sarcastic smile.

“Out!” She said and angrily pointed at the door. I shrugged and grabbed my things. “See you guys later!” I said and saluted my classmates. I then marched out of the room and left my classmates in giggles. I laughed lightly. I always enjoyed annoying Ms. Fitzgerald, she never liked me anyways but maybe that’s because I annoyed her. Oh well.

I walked over to my locker and put my books away. I then grabbed my messenger bag that had all my homework for the day in it and closed my locker. I sighed and looked inside my bag to make sure everything was there before I left. It was the last block of the day anyways, and seniors can sign themselves out, so why not leave?

I walked into the main office and greeted the lady at the desk. I grabbed the pen and signed the sign out book. I waved at the lady and walked out of the office. I walked down the long hallway and out to the parking lot. I looked at all the cars and sighed longingly. I then shook my head and walked off the school campus and towards my house.

You see, I come from an underclass family. We don’t have much money and only one car that my mom and dad share. Our house is a small rundown two story house that my mom found in the ads for a great price. We’ve lived there ever since. So, I’ve been saving the money I have left from my monthly pay check to get a car. A used one of course, I don’t think I’d ever be able to save enough money to get a brand new car in time for college next year.

I sighed and looked down at my old worn out converses. I’m going to have to get some new ones too, these are literally falling apart. I looked up as I walked onto my street. I watched as the little kids ran around in their yards giggling uncontrollably as the cashed each other. I smiled softly as I thought back to my childhood. It was just like that except I enjoyed chasing butterflies more than other children.

I laughed to myself and stopped when I got in front of my house. I smiled at it lightly and opened the rusted fence surrounding my house. I closed it behind me and walked up to my front porch. I opened the mailbox and pulled out the mail. I looked through them as I was walking through the house.

“Mom!” I called through the house. I smiled when I came across a letter for a university. I heard my mother’s quick footsteps from the stairs. I looked up right as she got to the bottom. “Hi mom.” I said giving her a big smile.

“Oh, Hi honey!” my mom said giving me one of her big smiles. “How was school today?” she asked as I handed her the rest of the mail. “It was great. Hey, I’m going to go upstairs for a while.” I said looking at the letter with excitement.

“Okay, I’ll call you down when dinner is ready.” She said and walked into the kitchen.

I ran up the stairs and into my bedroom. I shut the door behind me and I jumped onto my bed with a giant smile on my face. “Okay Diamond, you can do this. It’s just a letter.” I said to myself and to a deep breath. I closed my eyes and opened the letter.

I unfolded it but I didn’t open my eyes. I was too nervous. “Okay, on the count of three.” I said to myself, “One… Two… Three!” I shouted and opened my eyes. I looked down at the letter with a big smile on my face. It instantly turned to a frown as I read it.

“I wasn’t accepted…” I said sadly and dropped my hands onto my lap.

I laid down on my bed and rubbed my face. I don’t know what I’m going to do. I only applied to three universities. If I don’t get into the other two, I’m screwed until the next semester. I’ll have to live here with mom and dad and continue to work at the gas station. That’s not what I want to do with my life. I want to be a journalist. I want to make something of myself.

“Diamond, dinner’s ready!” I heard my mom’s voice call.

“Coming mom!” I yelled. I looked at the papers again and shook my head. I threw them in my trash can and walked down the stairs for dinner.

“Hey mom, what did you make?” I asked as I walked into the dining room. “Why don’t you look and see?” I heard her muffled voice from the kitchen. I laughed lightly and looked over at the table. “Oh, Hi daddy!” I said walking over to my dad and kissing his cheek.

“Hello cupcake.” My dad said giving me one of his warm smiles.

I took my seat beside of him and looked at the table. Pork chops, corn, mashed potatoes, and broccoli. My favorite. I smiled as my mom walked into the dining room with a smile on her face. She took her seat and looked at us. “Who wants to say grace?” My mom asked happily.

“I will.” I said giving her a smile. We bowed our head and put our house together. “Dear God, Thank you for our food. Now let’s eat, Amen.” I said giving my mom a smile. She laughed and nodded as did my dad. Dinner was filled with chatter and laughter. No awkward silences, it was great.

“I’ll do the dishes mom.” I said as we finished. My mom looked at me, “Are you sure honey?” I smiled at her. “Yes, I am sure.” I said and picked up her plate. “Okay, be careful! Don’t cut yourself on anything!” She called as I walked into the kitchen. “I won’t mom!” I called and set the dishes in the sink. I heard her soft footsteps go up the stairs.

I thought as I washed the dishes. When will I tell them I didn’t get accepted? I didn’t want to tell them tonight because everyone was in such a good mood. But, I know I’ll have to tell them sooner or later. Maybe I’ll wait and see if I get accepted into the other colleges first. I nodded and decided that that is exactly what I was going to do.

I finished up the dishes and dried my hand on the towel. I sighed and put the towel down on the counter. I then walked back upstairs so I could put on my pajamas and do my homework before going to bed. I walked into my room and closed the door behind me. I walked over to my closet and opened the door. I didn’t look in immediately; I just grabbed a random T-shirt and threw it on my bed. I then looked at into my closet to see something I didn’t expect.

A boy with wings coming out of his back, I screamed and looked at him with a shocked expression. My vision got blurry and I fell to the ground. The last thing I saw before my vision went black was a single white feather gently float to the ground.
