Preference: Creation

Zeus stared down at the earth from high above in the Heavens. He watched as his children needlessly fought amongst themselves. Ending unnecessary lives and scarring the lives of all those lucky enough to survive and escape the despicable goings-on on earth. Zeus' face hardened as his anger grew.

"NO," he growled in his mighty voice. So mighty that it caused the very mountain that the Immortals lived upon to shake. "Why must they do the horrid things," he wondered aloud to the wisest and cleverest of his children, Athena.

"I have pondered this as well, father and I have came up void of any conclusion. In this case, more war would cease to aide the situation on earth. What they are in desperate need of now, is one who can halt these terrible, senseless wars; bring the earth back to its former peace and serenity," Athena stated to her father. This is when the idea struck.

The idea of a creature that had the abilities needed to end the wars on earth. To bring earth back to its former glory. Immediately, Zeus called upon a Titan. "Prometheus, I am in desperate need of your assistance. Will you help me?"

"Of course I will, brother. What shall I do to assist you," Prometheus asked Zeus, eager to please his brother.

"Dear brother, my children on earth are no longer at peace. They are at war with each other! I need you to make me a woman of utmost perfection. Make her with wings of the purest kind and her hair shall be a cascade of pure gold; her eyes the perfect gray of mighty storm cloud."

As his brother continued to state his expectations, Prometheus could see the angel taking form in his head. "...and her name shall be Danica Nyxe for the night and the stars."

"Yes brother. I will assist you, but you must be warned. Perfection to this degree shall take time. The swiftest that I could possibly complete the task is twenty earth years," Prometheus informed his brother.

"Then I shall wait. I will expect her on the twenty-first day in December in twenty earth years. No later," Zeus stated to his brother and he graciously accepted the project. He turned from Zeus and headed back into his home on Mount Olympus and began the monumental project.

***

Finally, after twenty long years, the ultimate project was completed. What began as a lump of clay, was now replaced with a girl with immeasurable beauty. With her strands of pure gold and storm gray eyes, Danica Nyxe stood at five foot seven inches tall with a perfect body and flawless curves. Her perfect ivory wings sat gracefully upon her back.

"Danica," Zeus said affectionately as he took in the newly born angel. Danica smiled a dazzlingly beautiful smile back at him. "Do you know of your mission?"

"Yes, Zeus," she said in a beautiful voice that many a mortal woman would commit a dastardly crime to posses. "I am to bring peace unto earth and return to heaven when my duties are finished," she said and Zeus nodded in approval and then turned to his brother.

"You have done well, Prometheus, very well indeed," he said and Prometheus bowed in gratitude. "Now that you know of your mission, I allow you to leave the heavens to complete it. Be ware, you are never to show any mortal the gifts or heavenly wings that you posses. You are and angel, not a human. You must remember this, always, You have until the twenty-first day of December, next year to complete the task."

"Yes, Zeus," she said and then she left his side. She stretched her wings and flew to the edge of heaven and jumped. She flew to the ground and landed softly on the floor of the forest, where her journey would begin.

1. America

I stood at the top of the Scandinavian mountains and looked back at Europe for the very last time. After a few minutes, I turned my back to the beautiful scenery and let my wings unfold and spring forward. It felt too good to flex my wings after having them folded up and hidden away for going on six months now.

Ever since I left the Heavens, I have worked my way across the world. I made my way into Africa, Australia, South and Central America, the Middle East -one of the most troubled-; across the Eurasian continent and now I am on my way to one of the more difficult places: North America. ; Specifically the United States.

I looked back at Europe one last time and then, took flight. I soared high up into the sky and out of human sight. I flew for around six hours until I arrived in Canada. I landed in one of the most troubled of all of the Canadian provinces; Quebec. I didn't even bother stopping to think about the problem because I already knew. All of the wars and crime all lead back to one solitary figure, the government.

Instead of waiting around, I landed in an ally and fixed myself and my hair. I walked straight into the capitol building and into the governor’s office. When I walked in, he never noticed me. "What you are doing is wrong, and you know it," I said as I watched him steal thousands of dollars from the safe in the corner of the room that was his duty to protect.

He jumped and turned around startled. He looked over me and his worry faded, "Who are you and what are you doing in my office?"

I just shrugged, "I don't know. How about you tell me," I said and I turned and walked away. That was all that it took. Later, he called around and settled all of his reasonless disputes with the other provinces.

After I left the office, I looked up at the large clock in the square and saw that is was only 5:12pm. “Huh,” I said to myself. I was ahead of schedule. I thought that it would take at least a couple of days to settle Canada, but it took under two hours. Well, on to the next one. The next big project would be one of the toughest, considering what I have heard: The United States. Particularly California.

I walked over to an ally and set my wings free. I took flight and headed for my new destination, Santa Barbara, California. As I flew, I thought up a game plan on how to fix the U.S. It seemed that most of the issues were in the youth. I would need a way to get inside there world; fix it from the inside out. Then the idea struck; if I enrolled in a high school, I would be accepted into their world, and I could do small things, which could end up fixing the entire problem! That was it!

After a few hours of flying, I made it into Santa Barbara. I landed in an ally behind a building and started the project that was fixing the youth of California. Firstly, I had to find somewhere to live. I walked around the boardwalk until I came upon a news stand. I picked up one of the papers until I found and ad for an apartment for lease in a hotel that was just down the street from where I was. They were asking for a down payment and the first months rent at the signing. All in all, about $500; $300 down and then $200 per month. I looked in my pocket at the money that I had. Before I left heaven, Zeus had supplied me with $1,000 in every form of money for every country, anything beyond that I would have to work for like everyone else.

I walked down the street until I found the hotel with the room for lease. I walked up to the front desk and smiled at the middle aged woman behind the counter. “Hi, my name is Danica and I was wondering if the room for lease was still available?”

She smiled back at me and nodded, “Yes, it sure is. Hello, my name is Claire and I am the manager of the hotel. Would you like a tour?”

“Yes, I would please,” I said and she motioned for me to follow her. I followed her up a grand staircase and down a hallway to the right. We then came to an elevator. When the elevator opened and we went inside, she presses the number five. There were twelve floors in all. The doors opened to a dimly lit hall. We walked straight ahead. Finally, we came to the fourth to last door and she opened it. I walked inside and was amazed at what I seen.

It was beautiful. The carpets were white and a tan-colored sectional sofa sat in front of a large television that hung from the wall. A class coffee table sat in between them. There were huge glass sliding doors on the left wall that lead out onto a balcony that looked out over the city. To the left of the living room was a small kitchen with all black or chrome appliances. In between the kitchen and the living room, there was a small hallway that led back to the bathroom and the bedroom. The bedroom had white carpets like the rest of the house. The walls were elegant silver and the large white sleigh bed was pushed up against the north wall. There were tow matching white bedside tables on each side.

“So, what do you think?”

“I’ll take it,” I said and shook Claire’s hand.

She smiled and me, “Great! Let’s go back down into the lobby and we will sign the papers and get you the key,” she said and I nodded.

We walked back to the elevator and rode down to the lobby. She went behind the desk and pulled out a set of papers and a pen. She sat them on the counter in front of me. “Sill out the areas marked in red, and signs your name at the bottom.”

I filled out all of the necessary areas and signed my name. I handed back the papers and she smiled. “Okay, now. $500 is due up front and then $200 is due on the fourth every month,” she said and I nodded. I pulled out five one hundred dollar bills and handed them over to her. She reached down and she handed me two pieces of paper and a room key.

“Here is your copy of the lease and your address and home phone number. Here is the key to the apartment,” she said and smiled once again at me. “I hope that you will be happy and enjoy yourself here. Have a nice day, Danica,” she said.

“Thank you and I’m very sure that I will,” I said and walked out of the building and back out onto the streets. Next thing, I had to buy some clothes. Of course I had clothes, but they weren’t really relevant to California. I had $500 to get me started and then I had to get a job.

I walked into the first store that I saw that didn’t look overly expensive. I walked into Hot Topic and looked around. I ended up buying quite a few things and still had about $100 left so that I could buy food. As of now, my wardrobe consisted of jeans, shorts, tanks, blazers, tees, tees, and more tees. After I left Hot Topic, I walked around until I came upon a ‘HELP WANTED’ sign in the window of a small café called Café Luna. I walked inside and filled out an application and handed it in.

“Thank you, ma’am,” said the lady behind the counter. “Oh, could you please leave a phone number so that we may contact you?”

I nodded, “Yes. It is 805-695-8242,” I said and she nodded and wrote it down.

“Thank you, uh, Danica. We will surely be giving you a call,” she said. At that, I walked out of Café Luna and walked back home. I walked up the stairs and to the elevator and into my room. I looked at the clock and saw that it was already 9:23pm. I threw all of the bags into the closet and lay back on the bed and got under the covers, promising myself that I would unpack my new clothes and enroll for school in the morning.

***

I woke up the next morning around eight o’clock. I rolled around in the bed trying to get comfortable. After a few minutes, I realized that I wasn’t going to get anymore sleep, so I rolled out of bed and decided to get into the shower and go and enroll at Santa Barbara High School. I decided that I would enroll as a senior. Technically, I was made as an eighteen year old, so that is what I am going to stick with.

After I got out of the shower, I blow dried my hair and pulled on a pair of jean shorts that were adorable. They were a light blue at the top and looked like they were bleached at the bottom. I pulled on an ivory button-up tank and shrugged on a black leather jacket over it. I put on a black belt, black combat boots and left my hair down in it natural blond waves. I slapped on some mascara and lip-gloss and I was ready to go.
I grabbed my little black purse/bag and was about to head out the door when the phone rang. My heart immediately started racing. I ran over to the phone and picked it up, hoping that it would be Martha, the lady that took my application for Café Luna. “Hello…?”

“Yes, Danica? This is Martha, manager of Café Luna,” she said and I smiled up at the ceiling. Zeus had answered my request.

“Yes. How are you,” I asked out of politeness.

“I’m doing well, thank you. Well, I am calling to inform you that I am willing to hire you, if you are willing to accept.”

“Oh, yes!” I said smiling. “I would love to work for you!”

“Great! So, do you have school that I should know about,” she asked.

“Yes. I am enrolling in Santa Barbara High School today, actually, so I will be in school.”

“Okay. How about you work on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays after school until seven and every other Saturday from ten until seven?”

“Sounds good,” I said.

“Good. You can start Monday. Just were jeans and a black tee-shirt. Goodbye,” she said and hung up the phone. I put the phone back on the receiver and smiled to myself. Now all that I need to do is register for high school. This was going more according to plan than I thought that it would.

I locked the door to my apartment and walked own the hall to the elevator. It was about nine o’clock now, so people were in the process of checking in and out of their rooms, so the hallways were a little packed. Once I made it to the lobby, I walked out of the building and caught a cab. “Where to?”

“Santa Barbara High School,” I said and handed him twenty dollars. He gave me the change and started towards the school. After about five minutes, we pulled into a huge school. “Thank you,” I said and got out of the cab and it drove away. I started walking up the stairs to the front of the doors of the school and walked inside. I walked around the first hall until I came upon a glass door the said ‘OFFICE’ in big, bold, white letters across the front.

I walked inside the office and walked over to the desk. Behind it sat a lady in her late thirties or early forties. She had dark hair and blue eyes. She was a thick lady, but pretty all the same. She looked up from her computer when she heard me approach her. “Yes, how may I help you?”

“Yes, my name is Danica Nyxe. I just moved here and I was hoping to enroll for my senior year,” I said politely to the lady and she smiled.

“You sure can! Here, let me get you some paper work and we can go from there,” she said. She stood up from her chair and walked to the back of the office. A few minutes later, she came back with a yellow paper back book and a packet of papers. She handed me the papers, the booklet, and a pen and smiled, “Here you are, dear. Just fill these out and give them back to me. The booklet you can keep. There are three more pages in the back of the booklet that you have to fill out, but you can just tear them out and hand them in with the other papers,” she said and pointed over to a chair and handed me a clip board, “You can sit right over there.” I nodded and walked over to the chair and sat down, I then started filling out the papers.

Full Name: Danica Nyxe
Date of Birth: 12/21/1994.…

I filed out the rest of the papers. I had to wing - no pun intended - some of the information, like where I went to elementary school and parents. Really had no idea what to put for that, so I just said that they were dead and so was all of my family members and I was alone. When I was finished, I handed the papers back to the lady behind the desk, who I learned name was Janice. She looked over the papers and entered a bit of the information into the computer and smiled up at me.

“Well, Miss Nyxe, you are an official student of Santa Barbara High School. If you could give me a couple of seconds, I can print out a map and a schedule,” she said and I nodded and I walked back over to the chair that I was sitting in and waited. A couple of minutes later, Janice called me back to the desk and handed me the papers. I thanked her and asked her to call a cab for me.

I walked out of the school and over to the cab that was waiting on me, I looked over at the clock. 1:52pm. I got into the cab and asked the cab driver to drive me to the nearest store. I had about $200 left and I needed to buy some groceries. I paid the driver the $15 owed and got out at the Wal-Mart.

I walked out of Wal-Mart around six o’clock and instead of calling a cab and wasting another $15, I took the bus. After a short ride, I arrived back at the hotel. I walked up the stairs and over to the elevator and pressed the button for my floor. The elevator dinged and the doors opened to my hall. I walked down it until I came to my door. I unlocked it and walked inside. After putting all of my groceries away in the cabinets and the refrigerator, I walked back into the living room and curled up in the corner of the sectional with a blanket and flipped on the T.V.

After watching a few episodes of the new season of Duck Dynasty, I looked at the clock and saw that is was a quarter passed eleven. I clicked off the T.V. and got up from the couch. I stretched out my body and before I could stop it, my wings flexed out and I signed in contentment. I had had my wings hidden away for two days and not even attempted to move them once. Now that I think about it, that was rather stupid. I had my own apartment and no one could see me so I could keep them out as long and as much as I wanted…as long as no one saw them. So, instead of pushing them back inside my back, I left them out and continued on to my bedroom. I crawled under the covers and drifted off into a peaceful sleep.

2. First Encounter

Chapter Two
First Encounters
_________________________________________________________________________________________________

The weekend passed faster than I expected it to. One minute, it was Saturday and I was filling out papers and watching movies on my couch until the early hours of the morning, and now it is 6:15am on Monday morning and I was contemplating what to wear on my very first day of high school. Last night, when I read the hand book, I noticed that the dress code wasn’t that strict. You could basically wear whatever you wanted as long as it wasn’t just your underwear. So, with that in mind, I was stuck between two different outfits: a dark pair of short jean shorts, black combat boots, and a loose black work shirt with the sleeves rolled up or, a light pair of short jean shorts, a light brown pair of work boots, a loose v-necked, flesh colored shirt with the sleeves rolled up and tucked into my shorts, a brown belt, and a tan-ish gray-ish knit sweater.

After a few more minutes of deliberation, I chose to go with the latter of the two choices. After I decided, I went into the bathroom to take a shower. I washed my hair with my new vanilla scented shampoo and my body with my new cinnamon and vanilla shower gel. After I got out, I wrapped myself in the light pink bathrobe that I bought the other day and blow dried my hair. When I was finished, I walked back into my bedroom and pulled on my clothes. I left my hair down to hang around my shoulders in its natural waves. I applied a little mascara and lip-gloss and I was ready. I walked to the front door, grabbed my keys, my bag and a bit of money and walked down to the lobby. After a few minutes, the cab showed and I made my way to school.

The cab pulled into the drive way of Santa Barbara High and I gathered my things and got out of the small yellow car and started walking towards the front doors. As I walked, I could feel the gazes of the other students burning holes into my back, but I just ignored it and went on. Just as I was about to walk inside the school, a tall blonde boy stepped in front of me. He had piercing blue eyes and a smile that could kill. “Hi,” he said, “my name is Drake. You have got to be new here, because I don’t remember seeing someone this beautiful walking around here before.”

This dude just screamed player. Just the way that he was looking at me like I was a piece of meat was making my skin crawl. Something was off about him. “So, how ’bout a pretty girl going out to dinner with a handsome guy? It’s only natural,” he said and shrugged.

Something about his cockiness set me on edge. His presence alone already put me on edge, but now this cockiness just pushed me straight over. I smiled up at him sweetly and put my hand on his cheek, “How ’bout no,” I said and slapped him lightly on the cheek and walked passed him into the school, leaving him gawking after me. What? Don’t look at me like that. I might be an angel, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t be a little bitchy when I want too. I mean come on, I have spent basically my entire existence on earth.

I walked down the halls of the school until I found locker number 367. I quickly put in the combination and opened the locker. Inside was a set of books. A literature book, an English book, an Algebra II Trigonometry book, and AP History book. I pulled open my bag and pulled out the map and my schedule that Mrs. Janice had given me when I registered Saturday.

Block | Class | Teacher | Room _| Time _
1st | Algebra II Trigonometry | Howard | 15 | 8:10-9:30
2nd | AP English 12 | Lancer | 26 | 9:35-11:05
*** LUNCH *** | a: 11:10-11:40
| b: 11:40-12:10*
| c: 12:10-12:40
3rd | AP World History 12 | Jacobson | 32 | 12:45-2:15
4th | Physical Education| Howetone | NG | 2:20 - 3:10

I had Algebra II Trig first so I grabbed a pen, a notebook and the textbook out of my locker and started looking for room number fifteen. After a couple of minutes, I found the classroom. A couple of people were already there and in their seats, but I just walked passed them and sat at the back of the classroom. About five minutes later, the bell rang and the other students in the class started piling in and taking their seats. I wasn’t paying much attention until the chair next to me moved. I looked up and a girl with black hair and big bright blue eyes was sitting next to me smiling.

“Hi! My name is Aria Lynn Darcy, but most people just call me Lynn. You must be new here, what’s your name,” she asked me, smiling expectantly.

Right off the bat, I got a good, pure vibe off of her. She made me comfortable. I smiled back at her genuinely, “Yeah, today is my first day actually. My name is Danica Nyxe,” I said.

“Cool. I’m going to call you Dani, if that’s alright with you,” she said and I laughed and nodded.

“Yeah, that’s fine. So, is everyone around here as peppy and nice as you are,” I asked. When I did she just shrugged.

“Not really. Almost everyone finds me exceptionally annoying, well, everyone except my friends. You have got to meet them. They’ll love you!”

“Ok,” I said. Just then the teacher, Mr. Howard, came in and started the lesson. During the entire class, Lynn and I talked and she told me everything about everyone in the school, including the jerk that I had a run in with earlier, which I learned that his name was Hayden Carmen. He was the start quarterback of the football team and was a huge jerk. I also knew about the “Queen Bee’s”, Molly, Adrianna and Catt. They were the stereotypical cheerleaders that opened their legs for every guy on the football team. Lynn also told me about her best friends, Daniel, Jayse and Halle.

“Oh yeah, and Evan Monroe. He is like the hottest guy in the school. He is kind of quiet and thinks that he is better than everyone, even Molly. She has tried ever since freshman year to get to him but he has ignored her every time. I would advise not to waist your time on him, obviously none of us here are good enough for him,” she said rolling her eyes. I laughed to myself at her expression. I mean come on, he can’t be the hottest guy in the entire school, there has got to be someone better.

A few minutes later, the bell rang and I gathered my things and waited on Lynn. It turned out that we had lockers right next to each other. “So,” I asked her, “what class do you have next?”

“Phys Ed, what about you?”

“AP English,” I said and she frowned. “I guess I’ll see you at lunch. What lunch do you have?”

“The best one, B. Everyone who is anyone is in there, including Evan Monroe,” she said.

“Cool, so do I. Well, I guess I’ll see you then,” I said as I shut my locker and walked off to room 26 to sit through English.

When I got there, the teacher was already there, sitting behind her desk. I noticed that everyone was filing in and going to certain seats, even if they were away from the person that they came in with. ‘They must have assigned seats’ I thought to myself, so I went up to the teacher, Ms. Lancer, to find out.

“Excuse me, Ms. Lancer, my name is Danica Nyxe, today is my first day and I was wondering if there was any specific place that you would prefer me to sit,” I said and she smiled up at me.

“Well, hello Miss Nyxe. I hope that you are having a wonderful first day, and yes, we do have assigned seats in this class. If you could give me a second, I’ll look and see where I have marked for you to sit,” she said. She then picked up a clip board and flipped through some of the pages that she had on it until she found the one that she was looking for. “Yes, Danica Nyxe. You are to sit next to Mr. Monroe. Evan, could you raise your hand,” she asked and a boy with dark hair that swept over his tanned face and covered equally as dark eyes raised his hand at the back of the classroom. Right then and there, I knew that Lynn was right and that she wasn’t exaggerating, in fact she was underestimating him; he had to be the hottest guy that even I had ever seen and I had been all over the world.

I was stunned momentarily. Something about him had already attached itself to my heart and I haven’t even spoken to him. But he’s a mortal. I don’t get it. A mortal shouldn’t be able to affect me so strongly. Something is seriously wrong here.

Either way, I knew that I had to sit down, so I took a deep breath and walked over and sat down in the seat next to him. I didn’t look over at him in fear that I would make him think that I was a freak of some sort, so I just pushed my hair over my shoulder and made a shield between us. Even though I never looked at him, I could feel his gave on me. Burning through me into my very soul. I felt completely exposed. Something I had never felt on earth. It was like he could see straight through my human façade straight to my bold ivory wings hidden beneath my skin and clothes.

I was grateful when class started because it made it almost impossible for him to keep his eyes on me and still pay attention to the teacher, but somehow, he did. I am telling you, that had to be the longest hour of my entire existence. Through the whole class, I could feel his eyes on me, but I refused to look back at him. Finally, when the bell rang, I let out a sigh of relief and started gathering my stuff. In my heist, I managed to drop my notebook, but before I could bend down to pick it up, it was being handed to me.

I looked up to thank whoever it was and stopped in my tracks when I came eye to eye with Evan. “Thanks,” I stuttered out and looked down.

“No problem. My name is Evan. You must be Danica, the new girl that turned Hayden down,” he said laughing. As soon and he spoke to me, I could tell that all of the judgments that the people in this school had placed on him were wrong. I could see that he was a good person, just waiting for the right one.

“Yeah, that’s me,” I said and smiled at him and shrugged. He returned my smile and stuck out his hand. I placed mine in his and he shook it.

“That’s a first you know,” he said with a smirk as we gathered our things and walked out the door to the classroom and started heading towards our lockers.

“What,” I asked him.

“No girl has ever turned down Hayden. Like ever. Every girl that he has ever went after has melted at his feet and spread their legs. Personally, I find it disgusting, but to each his own and apparently, slut is his type,” he said and I laughed. By this type, we were at my locker.

“I guess so,” I said as I opened my locker and put my stuff inside. I looked back at Evan and noticed that he still had his books. “Don’t you need to put those up?”

He looked down and shrugged. “Yeah, I guess so. Do you have B lunch,” he asked and I nodded my head and he smiled. “Alright then, I’ll see you at lunch,” he said and turned and walked in the opposite direction of me.

I shut my locker and jumped when I turned around to see Lynn with wide eyes and her mouth hanging down onto the floor. I put my hand under her jaw and closed her mouth, “You’ll catch flies, sweetie,” I said sarcastically and laughed.

“Do you know who that was, Dani? That was Evan Monroe. The Evan Monroe. And he was talking to you, not that you aren’t pretty, I mean you are like gorgeous, but come on her never talks to anybody,” she said in a rush and I laughed and started walking towards the cafeteria.

“Thank you, and yes, Lynn, I know that was Evan Monroe.”

“Still, even if he is the hottest guy on the planet, he still acts like a ‘Greater-Than-Thou’ jerk, and you shouldn’t get involved with him,” she said and I rolled my eyes to myself and walked into the cafeteria.

“Calm down. I have had one conversation with him and you think that we are going to jump into a relationship? Trust me that would never happen,” I said. But did I want it to? There was something different about him. A pure soul that you don’t run across much. I was drawn to him, but I couldn’t do anything about it. I have a mission to accomplish and that was it.

Before I knew it, I had made it through the lunch line and Lynn was dragging me over to a table with three others already sitting there. She sat down and pulled up chair for me next to her. “Hey guys, this is Danica, but I have decided to call her Dani. Dani, this is Halle, Daniel, and Jayse.” She motioned to them as she said their names. Halle was really pretty. She had black hair and bright green eyes, pale skin and looked to be about five feet four inches tall. She then pointed at Daniel. He was very well built and tall. He had a dork brown bush of hair and some facial hair that made him really attractive and piercing blue-gray eyes. Finally, she pointed to Jayse. He was shorter than Daniel but still well built with brown eyes and dark blonde hair.

“Hi,” said and they all smiled and said hi back to me.

“So,” Halle said starting a conversation, “what’s this I hear about the new girl turning down Hayden and striking the interest of Evan Monroe in the same day?”
“Well, the-” I started until I was interrupted by Evan himself.

“Both are true,” he said and I blushed and everyone stared at him in shock as he pulled up at chair next to me and sat down. Whether they were more shocked at what he said or the fact that he just pulled up at chair and sat down beside me, I will never know.
