Softy Twins Pattern

 

MATERIALS: Kentucky Soft Spun Yarn, No. 113—6 skeins white or ivory; 1 skein Colonial Blue; 1 yd. each red and black yarn or embroidery floss

 

(For each doll): Open 1 skein and cut thru at bottom loop. Remove 14 strands and roll into soft ball for stuffing head. Set aside another 4 strands for tying. ARMS: From remainder of skein cut a 34" length, fold double, and tie at fold. Separate into 3 equal parts and braid. Tie ends. (Use remaining pieces for stuffing tummy.) BOY'S HEAD: Open 2 skeins and cut through loops at top and bottom. Wrap one of the 4 tying strands around yarn at a distance of 2½" from top cut. Insert soft ball of 14 strands and spread yarn evenly around ball in back and front. Squeeze tight below ball to form neck, and wind another of the tying strands 3 times around neck. Tie. GIRL'S HEAD (all other directions are the same): Tie 2 skeins to­gether securely to form top knot. Cut skeins at bottom opposite top knot. Remove 9 full-length strands for braids. Fold these 9 strands double and tie about ½" from folded end. Divide into 3 sections and braid. Tie ends; trim. Insert hair braid under top knot, then insert ball made with the 14 strands. Spread yarn evenly and tie at neck as for boy's head.

 

BODY: Insert arm braid btw body strands below neck. Insert tummy stuffing. Spread yarn evenly around front and back. Tie with strand of yarn to form waist (wind 3 times around body). LEGS: Divide remainder of yarn below waist into 2 equal parts. Separate into 3 even sections and braid. Tie securely, and trim. WAIST SASH: Double over 2 yds. of blue yarn and wind around waist to form sash about 1" wide. Tie ends, trim. BOWS: Double over 3 yds. of blue yarn and twist very tightly. Fold in half again and allow strands to twist back and form soft cable. Insert in girl's sash at back and tie bow. Make similar cable for boy's neck bow and girl s hair bow. CHEST AND BACK TRIM: With large-eye needle weave blue yarn horizontally in and out across chest and back. For girl, criss-cross blue strands. FEATURES: Use blue yarn to form eyes and black yarn or embroidery floss for eyebrows, pupils of eyes, and nose. Embroider mouth in outline stitch with red.

Martha Cow Pattern

 

 

MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 4 balls of Cream and 1 ball of Peach.

J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Six Strand Embroidery Floss, 1 skein each of Red and Brown.

Small bell.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.

Beige felt.

Cotton batting.

4 pencils each 7½ inches long.

 

GAUGE: 6 sc make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch.

 

Use a double thread throughout.

 

BODY (Make 2) … Starting at top of back leg, with Cream ch 9. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across (this is front—place a marker). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 3 sc in 1st sc (2 sc increased), sc in each sc across, 3 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row 2 more times. 5th row: 2 sc in 1st sc (1 sc increased), sc in each sc across. Ch 46, turn. 6th row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. Now inc 1 sc at both ends of next 3 rows. Then inc 1 sc at front edge only on next 5 rows. Work until piece measures 4¾ inches across center from starting chain. On next 6 rows, dec 1 sc at tail end—to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Break off.

 

HEAD AND NECK (Make 2) … With Cream, ch 5. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Now inc 1 sc at both ends of every other row until there are 10 sc on row. Ch 4 at end of last row (this is Neck—place a marker). 7th row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each st across, inc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Now inc 1 sc at opposite end from Neck every other row 3 times in all (17 sc). Work until piece measures 2 inches from 1st row of Neck, ending at opposite side. On next row work to last 3 sc. Ch 1, turn. Work over these 14 sts for 3 more rows. Then dec 1 sc at both ends of next 4 rows. Break off. Sew Neck to Body.

 

GUSSET … With Cream, ch 6. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece is long enough to go all around Head and across top of Back. Sew this Gusset in place.

 

Make another Gusset, starting with 4 sc and increasing 1 sc at both ends of every other row until there are 10 sc on row. Work till Gusset reaches top of Body, then dec back to 4 sc. Break off. Sew Gusset in place, leaving an opening for stuffing and for Legs. Stuff very firmly and sew up opening.

 

LEG (Make 4) … With Cream, ch 3. Join. 1st rnd: 6 sc in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd rnd: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around (18 sc). Work straight until Leg measures 3½ inches in all. Break off.

 

Wind sufficient cotton batting around a pencil to stuff Leg. Stuff and insert into opening. Sew opening all around Leg.

 

HOOF (Make 4) ... Cut 2 pieces of felt ¾ inch in diameter. Place a piece of cardboard between these two pieces and sew the edges together. Sew to bottom of Leg. Finish other Legs in same way.

 

SPOTS … Cut spots from felt and sew to Body.

 

UDDER (Make 2) … With Peach, ch 7. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each of next 4 sc. Ch 1, turn (short row). 3rd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, sc in next 4 sc, sc in next 2 sc on 2 rows below (8 sc). Ch 1, turn. 5th and 6th rows: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 7th row: Sc in each of next 6 sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd to the 7th rows once more. 14th row: Sc in each of next 4 sc. Ch 1, turn. 15th row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 16th row: Sc in each sc across, sc in next 2 sc of row below. Break off.

 

Make a Gusset of 6 sc, 3 ¼ inches long. Sew this Gusset between the two Udder pieces. Stuff firmly and sew in place.

 

EAR (Make 2 Peach and 2 Cream) … Ch 16. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Now dec 1 sc at both ends of next 3 rows. Break off. Sew a Cream and a Peach Ear together lengthwise and sew to Head.

 

HORN (Make 2) … With Cream, ch 3, join. 1st rnd: 4 sc in ring. 2nd to 5th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around. Break off. Stuff firmly and sew in place.

 

NOSE … With Peach, ch 6. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Inc 1 sc at both ends of every other row until there are 11 sc on row. Next row: Sc in each of first 5 sc. Ch 1, turn. Work over these 5 sc only, decreasing 1 sc at both ends of each row until 1 sc remains. Break off. Skip 1 sc at base of piece just made, attach thread to next sc and work over next 5 sc to correspond. Sew to face.

 

TAIL … With 6 strands of Cream, make a chain 6 inches long. Break off. Double this chain and sew in place. Cut strands of thread 7 inches long. Pull these strands through loop of Tail. Sew up Tail.

 

With a scrap of Brown make a chain 16 inches long. Thread this chain through a bell and tie around Martha's neck. Embroider brown eyes in satin stitch. Nostrils are embroidered in Red.

William Goat Toy Pattern

 

 

MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 2 balls of White and 1 ball of Black.

J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Six Strand Embroidery Floss, 1 skein of Indian Pink.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.

1 yard of ribbon. Cotton batting.

4 pencils, 5 ½ inches long.

 

GAUGE: 6 sts make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch. Use a double thread throughout.

 

TAIL ... Starting at tip, with White ch 2. 1st row: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across.
