INT. Dining room - Night
JOHNATHAN LEWIS sits at a table, with at least 3 piles of books beside him around and on the table. He looks at the computer and reaches for a glass. He stares at the ice at the bottom of the glass, kicking back the liquid, and starts to fall asleep. He begins to wake up and sees that the glass is now full.
JOHN
(He stands up.)
Who's there?!
Lewis
(In the shadows)
Sit down, Johnathan. Take a swig from that glass.
JOHN
(Breathing heavily)
Who are you? Some sort of ghost?
Lewis
Don't you remember me, Johnny?
John
Lewis? Is that really you?
Lewis
In the flesh, Johnny.
JOHN
no, your just a character in my head. Made up of my imagination.
Lewis
But is it so hard to think that I'm real? That maybe, just maybe, I'm real?
John
No, you're not real. So just leave.
Lewis
LISTEN TO ME JOHNATHAN LEWIS!
(John sits down, returning to his books and computer.)
You have a problem.
John
Is that right? Well, then just let me die in peace.
Lewis
(Lewis pours the drink down the drain, and Johnathan is yelling.)
This will make you listen. Now, sit. down. NOW.
John
What's your problem, Lewis? Do you want me to die, or are you here to gloat?
Lewis
Dammit, Johnny! I'm saving you from yourself, by "his" request.
JOHN
Who's "he"?
Lewis
(points to the sky)
"HIM".
John
(laughing)
Really? Him? The man up in heaven?
Lewis
(being serious)
Look, you're a mess. You need help, and they've seen the way you've wasted your life away. You're a talented author and a good man.
John
No. I'm not. I never was or will be.
Scene 2 - Flashback
INT. Dining room/kitchen - DAY
JOHN (V.O)
(John is seen with MARY, his wife, in an argument. They are both screaming.)
That's why.
LEWIS (V.O)
What do you mean?
JOHN (V.O)
That's Mary Winton, my ex-wife of 6 years. We were on the last legs of our marriage. We had gone to the marriage council for three months, but nothing was working. She wanted to have a family, kids, and live a quiet life. I just wanted to write my books. I guess we just didn't see eye-to-eye. When we divorced, she won everything in the court-case. The car, the bank account, everything. The only thing I got to keep was the house from my mother's will. My entire life was changed for the worse.
FADE to see john and lewis at the table
Lewis
Johnathan, I... I didn't know.
JOHN
Well, now you do. Just leave.
Lewis
Johnny... I'm sorry.
JOHN
Your sorry? Really? You came into my house unannounced, you talk about how my life is a mess, and get me to a point of breaking down. All I do is sit around all day in this empty house, staring at the same computer, all day, every day. And you know what, it hurts. It hurts more than you could ever imagine. And that pain will never go away. No matter what.
Lewis
Are you done?
JOHN
Yeah. I am.
Lewis
Okay
