Swinging on the swing I look down at the dirt where my tiny finger wrote V+D. I look over at Dimitri to make sure he was still here, and when I saw him a smile came upon my smile childish face. He smiled back at me.
“Hi Veve,” he said jumping off the swing walking towards me.
“Hi Dimi,” I replied back with the same tone, mocking him.
I stop swinging when he came near me. He took my hand and walked me over to the forest we’ve been in many times. I look at him wondering what he is going to do, if we are going to play tag like the usual. I knew that we weren’t there was something different about him, he seemed on the edge. Concerned I look at him and he just flashed a smile which meant I’m fine, but I know he isn't.
“What’s wrong Dimi,” I ask once he stopped walking. He walked towards me and I took a step back, we continued to do that until my back hit a tree, and I couldn’t step back anymore.
“Veve, I have to show you something,” he says excitedly, which made me relax for a moment. My relaxation left as I saw my Dimi turn into a white wolf. I heard bones crack and shift, and I was horrified. Looking at Dimi, I was horrified but amazed at the same time. I knew he wouldn’t hurt me, but it was just so abnormal. Falling to my knees I hugged Dimi, the wolf Dimi. 2 minutes later he got out of my grasp and ran into the forest. I sat there on my knees for 10 minutes wondering if he was coming back.
But soon after it was dark I learnt he wasn’t. I began to miss him, and every night until I was 10 I had nightmares about him, horrid nightmares.
Groaning at the clock I swing my legs over the edge of the bed and go into my closet to pull out a large black sweater. Pulling it on I walk out of my room, not caring about my messed up hair from sleeping. Half asleep I walk down the stairs and bump into my sister.
“Whoa what happen to you, nerd?” I gave her a death glare, to which she widens her eyes. She moved out of my way and starred at me.
“Someone got up on the wrong side of the bed,” she mumbles, and she receives another long death glare from me. She ran down the stairs and into the kitchen.
“Mom, Dad, Veronica is acting weird, she is never like this!” They mumbled like what, and I roll my eyes. It’s true, usually, I’m nice, obedient, innocent, and well a morning person. When I woke up this morning something flipped a switch, I’m all grumpy and stuff. I don’t like it. I continue down the stairs then turn left into the kitchen. Ignoring my parents ranting I grab and mug and pour some coffee. I turn around to look at them and I saw that they finished expecting an answer.
“What did you ask,” I say honestly. Their eyes widen as did my sisters. I look pass my parents to the table where a couple my parent’s age was sitting with a boy my age, 19. Looking back at my parents I arch an eye brow and took a sip of coffee with out blowing.
“Hot.” I heard my sister laugh and I smile a little. When they didn’t answer I began to walk out of the kitchen with my coffee but my dad stopped in front of me. I look back at the unexpected guest, and know it has to do with them. Sighing and rolling my eyes I step back into the kitchen.
“Sit down, Veronica,” my father tells me in a stern voice that everyone jumps to, except me. Slowly I pull out a chair and sat down. My sister sighs in relief thinking that I’m back to my old self but then I gave her the death glare again.
“Father doesn’t Veronica need to go pack,” my sister says trying to save me. I nod my head in agreement but he just shakes his head and sits next to me. I blew on my coffee, to hear a laugh, and then I slip it. Once it was in my mouth and didn’t burn me I relaxed. Yummy coffee. Hopefully tomorrow once I’m in England for my collage, I’ll be back to my normal self.
“You aren’t going to collage, veronica,” my mother states standing as far away from me as possible. Everyone was wondering why, and I widen my eyes. I’ve been planning on going to collage since I was 10, I’ve been getting straight A’s just to make sure I get to attend a collage of my choice, and she is saying I can’t. That’s why my sister calls me nerd. Usually I don’t mind it but today I did.
“Why mother, I’ve been planning on it since the 5th grade, I’ve been a great student and child of yours,” I exclaim getting up from my seat starring at the boy, it’s him, that’s why.
“You.” I point a finger at him in hatred. He looked confused, probably wondering how I figured it out. Well why else would they give me the news well these 3 strangers are in my house. I examine them then I felt familiar with the boy my age. Dimitri. My eyes widen at my recognition, I shake my head and clear the thought. I haven’t seen him since I was 6, it can’t be him. Remembering the pain that Dimitri brought me from leaving, I became my old self. The kind and innocent one.
“Dimi?” He eyes shot up at me and he smiled, he was happy I remembered. I flash a look at my sister, she was as dumbfounded as I was.
“Hey Veve,” he replied and I felt uneasy at the name, I haven’t heard anyone call me that since he left. Speaking of why did he come back.
“Why are you here Dimi,” I ask looking away with a frown worn on my face. I saw my dad mouth me to look at him, and I did. I looked at Dimi he doesn’t look like the one that left me behind. Now he looks much older, with high cheek bones black hair that flows into his vibrant emerald green eyes that I loved. When I was younger and look into them I saw pure happiness and power, but now I see sadness, and a deeper type of power. I waited for Dimi to answer my question, but his mother spoke up instead.
“We need you to come with us, you the one who can save our kind, your kind.” What kind, I ask myself. I know Dimi is a werewolf, but I’m a human as far as I know. I am a human right? I look at my Father for answers but he had none. In his ocean blue eyes I saw he was hiding something. Why would he lie to me? I look back at Dimitri’s parents with confusion in my eyes. Surely, they are talking about the wrong girl.
“I don’t think I’m the right person,” I murmured looking down at my coffee, which know seems unappetizing.
“Yes you are, you have the birthmark to prove it,” Dimitri’s father says pushing up my sleeve on my left arm to reveal a birthmark with looks like a tattoo. I look down at my arm and my frown Deepens. . I never asked for this. Standing up I take my coffee and leave the room. I sat down on the couch in the living room Indian style, slowly sipping my coffee. I continue to look forward at nothing, and think to myself, it’s not like I have to marry him.
“At least we didn’t tell her that her marriage is in 1 month, she would go ballistic,” Dimitri’s mother says as someone plopped down beside me, almost spilling my coffee. I put my coffee safely on the table and put my head on Dimitri’s lap. I knew that he was the one who came and sat down, no one in my family would do that. I close my eyes snuggling into a comfortable position, and fell asleep. I was awoken by a chorus of awe’s and my father ranting on angrily. Looking over to them I began to get up but Dimi’s arms were tightly wrapped around me. I try to free them, but it just makes him hold tighter. Letting out a small laugh I pinch him and he lets go waking up. Taking advantage of that I quickly get off the couch. Walking over to the other chair I plop down and hear the door bell ring. Everyone gave confused faces expect my sister, who had an ‘Opps’ expression.
“I didn’t know we where going to have guest so I said we were having a party, you all are welcome to stay, I guess,” she said in a frantic rush, and then ran to the door. I couldn’t see the door from here, but I could hear it fine.
“Is Veronica here, please tell me she is here, I don’t care about the party, where is she? I need to see her! Please,” I heard Andrew ramble on in a pleading voice. I close my eyes and let out a heavy sigh falling back into the chair.
“Crap,” I mumble but everyone hears, I mean everyone, even Andrew, which was a big mistake.
“She’s here,” he says running into the living room. I placed my hand on my eyes, then opened a gap between two of them peeking through. Wonderful, he was looking like a love puppy.
“Go away,” I whine and close the gap looking into darkness. I soon felt cold hands around me and a growl come from the other side of the room. My hand left my face and I starred at Andrew, sighing in frustration I push him off and stand up. He looked hurt, but I didn’t care. He’s the one who broke my heart after Dimitri did.
Flash back- Veronica’s freshman year.
Happily skipping to my first period class, I ran into someone in the hall. I said a polite sorry and continued to my homeroom. As I walk in my happy mood disappears and is replaced with sadness. I was starring at my worst nightmare, starch that, Dimitri leaving was the worst. I was starring at my Andrew and the school slut making out, hands up each other’s shirt and everything. Slowly I walked to my seat and pulled out my book and began to read. After 5 minutes, the school’s slut got off my boyfriends lap, and I saw him searching the room for me. Rolling my eyes I handed him a note, saying:
Funny, I just watched an episode of Jersey shore (or so it feels like), it was a school slut and someone’s boyfriend, and I believe his name was Andrew. Weren’t you the one who said ‘I love you’ so now you’re a cheater and a liar, wonderful
V.
I saw him shake his hand in denial and his eyes fill with hurt. Not caring about my grades for once, I got up and left to walk home.
Present—
Emotions fill me within as the two guys that hurt me the most in the same room. Silently I walked up stairs away from this mess. Strolling up the stairs, I walk to my room and I slam the door so everyone could hear. My eyes water and I sit at my desk. I picked up my collage broacher and read through it, wondering how much I’ll miss. Searching through my desk I came across one of my pictures of when I was 6, and Dimi was still my best friend and here. It was a picture of Dimi and I standing on the top of the playground holding hands, as if we were the prince and princess of the place. I laugh remembering back to the real scene. While I was in mid thought, I felt someone snatch the picture out of my hand. I turn around quickly, to see Andrew angry. He was about to rip it and I was about to snatch it back when someone else did. I saw Dimi was the one who did and was now studying it. The corners of his lips bent upwards into a smile.
“You still have this picture of us?” I was about to answer him when Andrew fell onto on knee and shakily pulled out a box. I looked over to Dimi for help and he did give some, just the unexpected way. He pulled me up from my seat and kissed me. Electricity ran through my veins and I kissed back. Dimi wrapped his arms around my waist and I wrapped mine around his neck, pulling him towards me. The kiss deepened and Andrew faded from my view. Dimi’s tongue ran across my bottom lip and I kept my mouth close smiling. He pulled back with a frown on his face.
“Finally you two are done smooching,” Andrew says then took my hand trying to get my attention. He was still on one knee with the box in his hand.
“No,” I said easily then took the picture and Dimi out of my room. Gliding down the stairs I wonder if this is all happening. I never felt so different and needed in my life. I can’t honestly be a werewolf, one that changes into a wolf I have never done that before.
“Dimi, how am I a werewolf?” Dimitri looks over at me with a faint smile and shrugged. Helpful much, I thought to myself annoyed.
“Google is more helpful than you,” I joked then jumped onto his back. Reaching the bottom of the stairs our parent’s were saying goodbye and I felt unneeded. Could they honestly just let me leave without an argument?
