The Chase

Mack was three rows in front of me. Those three rows seemed like three miles. Okay I admit, I'm a tad bit obssessed with Mack Little. I mean who wouldn't be? with his blonde hair and baby blue eyes. He was every girl's dream boy. Besides,me being secretly in love with him is what to be expected. A nobody like myself is suppossed to be secretly in love with the school jock. Some weird chain of events happens, the jock will realize what a jerk he is and will fall in love with the nobody. That's how it is in every good story,I'm just another nobody caught in this cruel curse.
"Mona,"came a voice from the seat in front of me,"Stop drolling and pay attention." That would be my best friend Emily. Em and I are both 18 and seniors at our school, Oakville High. People who notice Em and I say we look a lot alike, but not many people notice us. Most people tend to ignore anything not normal. We each have the same color hair which we decided would be aburn, beacuse no one really knew what color it would be considered. The only difference between the two of us was that I had smoky grey eyes, while she had deep blue eyes.
"Em, you know it's so hard to pay attention when I've heard this speech five times." It's true, I had heard the speeker say the same words five times. He was talking about how the world was coming to an end and we need to be prepared blah blah blah blah. All students from selected schools where to be matched with who the government seemed fit and sent away to ensure that if in fact the world did end we would continue to thrive under the destroyed world. Yes, you heard right UNDER the destroyed world. For years the government had been building an underground city without anyone knowing. Weird rigth? You'd think that some nosey repoter or random person would happen apon the hidden entrance, but nope, no one did. I like to think of it as Area 51, everyone has their own idea of what it could be, but no one really knows.
No one was really worried about the world ending they said it would end on 12-21-12 and that never hapened.
"It's real this time," the NASA scientist say, "It's gonna happen." Em and I planned to run away before the government took us all. I would never be forced to have children with someone I am not in love with. Emily felt the same way. Em wasn't intrested in boys, in fact, she wasn't intrested in girls either. She had a rough past that made her that way. So had I, but I looked toward the speaker and the men in black suits before I depressed myself with memories of the past. I looked from the speaker to Mack who now had his arm around a petite blonde. Barbie, I call her. She is the captain of the cheer team and Mack's current girlfriend. Oh if she only knew what us orphan girls were capable of when it came to getting what we wanted. I could easily hurt her. Em and I came from no oridany orphange,we came from one that takes in abused girls and teaches them self defense. I was best in the home because I was tired of being the weak little girl. My thoughts were inturupted when I heard the words "will be posted tomorrow." I turned to look at Em and saw the look in ner eyes, and the way she looked at me with fear. I already knew what will be posted tomorrow. The results of matchmaking.

At the beginning of the school year, mean looking men in white lab coats came to our school and pricked each students finger to decide which students where qualified to be sent to UGF. After each of our parents were notified, the selected students all were called to a meeting where they told us to get to know one another. It was odd. We all knew eah other, some of us just knew each others names, but hell that's still knowing. It wasn't just seniors like I thought it would be though, there were kids of all ages.
"So tell me about yourself." Em had joked. She already knew everything about me, but I decided to play along.
"Well, my name is Mona, my best friend Emily is a goof, and sometimes I'm a tad controlling."
"Ha tad is an under statement." Em laughed out loud earning us several glares from other kids. We continued to 'get to know each other', and at the end of the meet and greet as Em and I called it, they announced that each one of us would be matched with some one in the room. My jaw dropped as I took in the kids around us. I scanned the faces I knew. Mack, Josh, Lonny, Tyler, Brennan and so many more. I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that I would have to do IT

with one of these guys. You see, the matched pair had a huge responsibility: It was our job to keep the human population going.
"I hope I don't get a nerd." Em had said. I glanced over at her and smiled. That is so Emily.
"Ha! have fun Emily. Don't think for a second I am going to take any part in this." I whispered harshly at her. "I'm not gonna be forced to have a kid."
"Well what are you gonna do Mona?"
"Duh stupid run away."
"I'm in." It was here in this very gym that Em and I made our oath to run away.

I waited for Emily in our usual spot in the playground. After the assembly I ditched, not wanting to put up with the teachers. I heard twigs breaking, and I knew it was Emily. I had waited for her in the little stone tunnel at the edge of the playground for years, and knew the way she walked. Em dropped on the ground in the entrance of the tunnel.
"Hi," she said weakly,"I feel nervous Mona." She crawled through the small tunnel and sat next to me with her feet proped up on the stone wall.
"It's okay Em so am I." It hurt my pride to say it, but I was. I wasn't nervous about running away, there was no reason for me to be worried I'd ran away before, I was nervous about the matchmaking. Of corse I wouldn't see the results, Em and I had a spy going in to see those for us and report back via text. But still I was nervous. What if Em likes who she gets paired with ad decides to go back. i wouldn't be able to stop her, and I sure as hell couldn't force her to run. What scared me most though is that if Emily would go back, I would be alone, completely alone.
"Whoa!! The all mighty one is worried, I dont belive my ears!" exclaimed Em.
"Hush."I replied coldly. I really didn't want her to know I was worried. I didn't want her to see me worried because then she might get worried and start to second guess me and our plan.
"Fine. I'm not worried though. I mean what if I get paired with Josh? That would not make me worry!" Em laughed at her statement! Of corse she wouldn't mind that. She had been in love Josh for... well forever. Of corse the wide reciver was oblivious to her school girl crush. Just as Mack was oblivious to mine.
"HA! you would say that Emily!"
"What's that supposed to mean?" She ask while tracing our names craved into the stone wall of the tunnel several years ago.
"Nothing Em, honest it was nothing." I didn't want to fight with my best friend. Not now. Not with everything that is going on.
"You are SO hard to read sometimes."
"Where have I heard that before Em?" Em and I crawled out of our little tunnel and made our way back to the orphanage. We knew we would get in trouble for being late, but we get in trouble on a daily basis so it really doesn't madder. I think evil Ms. penny gave up on us long ago. We walked straight past Ms. Penny, our advisior, to our shared room. It was my night to use the bathroom first. A hot shower is excatly what I needed. I needed some time to myself. After being in the shower for 45 minutes, i decieded it was time to leave the warmth of the shower. I dried off with an old raggly towel the home provided and dressed in a over sized t-shirt with a pair of Victoria Secret underwear that I had swiped on a adventure to the mall with Emily. i walked out of the bathroom and saw Emily on her bed reading a book.
"Your turn Em, but ya might wanna wait while." Emily chuckled as I said this. She knew that on nights I got to shower first there would be little to no hot water left for her. She gathered her night clothes and left the room. I assumed she was headed to a girls room that didn't have a roomie that liked to use all the hot water. I crawled into my little twin sized bed and wondered what tomorrow might bring.

The Golden eyed Boy

The next day when I woke up I noticed Em wasn't in her bed. Oh well

I walked to the mirror Em and I had hung on the empty wall of our room, and applied what little make up I had. It wasn't anything extreme, just enough to give me a natural look. Walking over to the little closet Em and I shared I noticed that her book lay on her bed, unfinished. Em always finished a book. She must have been tired I guessed. I put on my favorite pair black skinny jeans and a black long sleeved shirt. I walked over to my bed and fished my pair of combat boots from under it. I'm not goth or anything, but if Em and I would have to run we would be less noticable in black. I grabbed my booksack which was devoid of all books. I had stuffed it full with all things that I thought would come in handy on our journy. At the door, I noticed Em's shoes were gone, so I figured she must have skipped breakfast and left. Headed to the kitchen, I noticed all of the girls were seated around the table. I pulled out a chair next to Big Rache. Grabbing the box of Coco Pebbles, I shoook it only to find it empty. I'm the only one who ate Coco Pebbles.
"What's wrong skinny bitch?" I looked at Big Rache, who had an overflowing bowl of MY Coco Pebbles.
"Oh you know, I just don't like it when bitches think they have the right to take things without asking." And then I did the unthinkable. I grabbed the bowl of Coco Pebbles and poured them all over Big Rache. "Ask next time."
"YOU ARE DEAD DO YOU HEAR ME MONA? DEAD!" Rache's voice got lower with every word. I decided not to stick around and ran out of the home. Once I was far enough away and figured Big Rache couldn't catch up by now, I slowed to a walk and took in the sights around me.
As I walked down the end of the street that our home was located on, I couldn't help but notice all of the families saying their good-byes. Mothers and Fathers saying goodbye to their only kids. There was a lot of tears on my way to the park that day. Tears for all of those poor families, and tears for what my family could have been like. Once I was in the park, I took notice of all of the small things that I would normaly ignore. I saw two birds sitting on the monkey bars. They were both female red birds. I could tell by the dullness of their feathers. For some odd reason they reminded my of myself and Emily. Once I reached the tunnel, I looked around to make sure I wasn't being followed and ducked into the tiny tunnel. Emily was huddled up at the end of the tunnel. Anyone just passing by wouldn't notice she was there. She had on a black hoodie so her face wasn't visisble from where I was crouched.
"Jack's already at school. He text and said that there were men in black suits everywhere, and as soon as you walked into school they took some blood to account you present. He said they are not going to let anyone out, and are going to bring them to the UGF today. " Emily said without one breath. 'Of corse they were bringing them to the UnderGround Facility (UGF) today' I thought, they have everyone under the same roof and wouldn't have to round them up.'

"Wow, this is serious shit!" I replied to Em.
"Yeah, I kinda figured that with all the meetings."
"Oh hush smart ass." I playfully said to Em. I looked over at her, and saw how she was glaring at her phone. Something about the text she was reading was making her upset, that much I knew for sure.
"What is it?" I ask Emily. I was determined to get an answer from her. Usually I don't push her to open up, but under the circumstances
I would push until she told me what was going on.
"Jack said run, run as far into the woods and don't come out. He said they are looking for everyone who didn't show up because the UGF won't work without both pairs. He said Lonny didn't show up and they killed his whole family because they wouldn't tell where they hid him. He gave himself up to try to save his sister. He was to late though." Em said with tears in her eyes. "Poor Lonny, he wouldn't hurt anybody Mona. He's a giant teddy bear. How could someone do that to him?" This was just as hard for Em as it was for me. I loved Lonny as a brother, and I loved his family just as much. They were always nice to me,and fed me whenever Lonny would notice how skinny I was. Lonny always liked me, from the very first day Em and I met him. Emily liked him more than just a friend, but she never acted apon her feelings.
"Well it's a good thing we have no family for them to kill." I stated. I knew Em would think I was a heartless bastard for saying this, but if I talked about Lonny I knew I would end up crying. I haven't cried in forever, but Em and Lonny were the only family I ever knew, and knowing one of them was hurting was more than I could bear.
Em's phone buzzed in her lap. We both looked at the phone for a second. When I realized she wasnt going to answer it, I grabbed it out of her lap. She didn't protest when I grabbed it like she normally would. "Where are y'all?" the text was from Jack. I hezitated for a second before responding " Somewhere no one will find us." after I sent the text, I threw the phone into the park, grabbed Em's hand and we ran. We ran until night fell and we could no longer see.
"We will stay here for tonight Em."
"Okay." Em didn't pick fights that she knew she couldn't win. After a while of laying there next to Emily, her breath fell quiet and even. I lay there not wanted to go to sleep and leave us unprotected. After who knows how long of laying there, I started to doze off. Just as my eyes closed I heard the distant sound of twigs breaking and dogs barking.
"Em get up now we have to go." As Emily was getting up, I saw a beem of light shinning through the trees. I knew the people and dogs where close. Call it whatever ypu want, but my first instinct was to geet Emily out of harms way. We started running, and the dogs must have heard us because there was a lot of frenzied barking and some one yelled "Over there."
"I want you to run Emily. No matter what you see or hear RUN!" I shouted this at Emily as I pushed myself harder than I have ever pushed myself before.
"Argh!" I saw Emily fall, but it never registered in my mind. All I could think about was survival. I yelled at her to get up, then I realized that she didn't just fall, her foot was caught in a snare.
"Oh God oh God! How bad is it Mona?" I kneeled on the ground beside her foot and looked at how deep the snare was cut into her foot.
"Shit! Okay Emily I'm gonna get this off you. I need you to be as still and quiet as possible. Can you do that for me?" I looked up at her and she nodded weakly. I tore off a strip of my shirt and tossed it to her. "Here put this in your mouth it will muffle your scream." As soon as she had it in her mouth i started to try to get the snare off of her foot. Emily let out a wail of pure pain. The piece of cloth I gave her did no help. Shit. The beam of light got loser. They were closing in on us.
"I don't know what else to do." I wailed. I looked around me and saw nothing useful. I jumped over Emily and started to cover her in leaves. I figured if I could cover her up they wouldn't see her and I could lead them away from my best friend.
"Don't leave me!" Emily whispered. My heart broke right there in the woods.
"I'm not sweetheart. I'm just going to lead them away from you and come back to get you when it's safe." I stood and looked at the place where I last saw the beam of light. They were closer now, and I had to go for my plan to work.
"See ya later Emily." I whispered. As I turned around I started to run. I figured if I get far enough away from her I could then make noise. I turned to look at Emily one last time. She was barely noticible. When I turned back around I ran into something hard. Rock hard. I looked up and found my self staring into the most beautiful pair of amber-colored eyes. Golden Eyes.

The Crew

As I looked up at the golden eyed boy, I took in the rest of his features. He had dark almost black hair with the stubborn jaw of a fighter. He was the kind of boy that disturbed the space around him, filling my entire space with his presence. A very masculine presence. I was 5'8 and looking up at the guy,so he was at least a good 3 inches taller than me. My eyes travled down his body to where my hands were rested. Due to the fact that it was still dark and the moon only provided enough light for me to see his face, I noted that his chest was the sorce of the 'rock' I had ran into. I looked back at his face to find him smirking at me. I looked at him questionly and he cocked his head to the side, listening. I looked back in the direction I had come from, to where Emily was. I was taught to never turn your back on strangers, but I found myself feeling strangely safe around Golden Boy. I found that this name fit him and his golen eyes.I turned back and looked at him.
"W-" He cut me off by putting his hand over my mouth and shaking his head. I put my hand on his, trying to pry off his fingers, but he was not removing his hand. I was frantic now. I wanted to get away to go back to Emily. Hell I wanted to to anything but be here at this moment. I heard Emily whimper and jerked away from Golden Boy. This resulted in him twisting me so fast my head spun and wrapping his free arm around my waist.
"Look." his voice low and husky. His body was pressed against mine and I could feel the heat raditing off of him in waves. I couldn't focus on anything. The only thing I heard was his slow breating in my ear. The only thing I smelt was him. He had an extremely musky smell that sent my hormones into over drive.
"Look." He repeated himself, and I snapped out of my trance. What the hell is going on? My bestfriend is hurt and out there somewhere and I'm thinking about some boy that could be a threat to me.

I did as I was told and looked in the direction I was facing. I strained my eyes and saw shadows approaching and noticed that the one in the lead was holding something bride and groom style that was limp. As the shadows got closer I noted that they were all men around the same size as Golden Boy, and that the limp something was Emily. My knees buckled beneath me and the only thing keeping my upright was Golden Boy.
"Emily." I breathed. She was right there being carried by Golden Boy's crew. When the men were directly in front of me Golden Boy released me and started to walk in the direction I was headed before I ran into him. I looked at the guy holding Emily and mouthed a Thank You. The man just smiled and started walking after Golden Boy. When we caught up to Golden boy he grabbed my arm and took off in full sprint pulling me along with him. Five minutes of running and he was literally dragging me. He stopped, but the others kept going, even the one with Emily.
"Why'd we stop?" I panted with the little breath I had left in me.
"Because you weren't going to make it much longer. Here get on my back." I just sat there and looked at him like he was crazy.
"That would slow us down even more." I stated. I was only 102 pounnds, but you try running a long distnace with a 102 pound person on your back. You're not gonna get far.
"No it won't now get on before you make me do something I regret you stubborn child." The anger in his voice made me wince, ad his words hurt, but I found myself getting on his back any way. He had a power to his voice that no one could ignore or defy.
"Hold on." he demanded. I wrapped my arms around his neck and my legs around his waist. As soon as he felt me holding on, he ran. I felt like I was a Jockey. My seeing everything a powerful horse sees, feeling that power. I know that's weird, but it is how I felt when he ran. I found my self starting to doze off. I felt safe, and I was relaxing as much as a person could while holding on for dear life.

***Golden Boys POV***
I felt the girl relax against my back. Fially. I have to give her credit, for such a little girl, she had an iron grip on me. It was starting to get uncomfortable. I could feel her breath even out and I knew she had fallen asleep. I stopped and twisted her so that I was now holding her like Liam was holding her friend. I noticed that even covered in dirt and with leaves in her hair, the girl was beautiful. No one in their right mind could say that she wasn't. With her waist long arburn hair, and smokey grey eyes, she could be a model. As I ran, I found myself thinking about the girl. NO

She is nothing more than a diversion. A very interesting diversion, but nothing more. I was going to have to make sure that this girl remained just a diversion. A girl like that might tempt me to get involved. A few more minutes and we would be at the cars. One of my crew had been hunting when he saw the girls running. He called and let us know what he saw. Normally we would stay out of other people's business, but Liam said that the girls where in trouble and looked to be running for dear life. I saw the cars come into view. They were all on waiting for us.
"About time. We have to go," said Jonny. I didn't say anything as I set the girl in the back seat of one of our black SUVs. i climbed in and sat beside her. She groaned and her head rolled on my shoulder. I sucked in a sharp breath. God she was beautiful.
"Dude, she's your mate." Said Jonny. He knew by the way I was reacting towards her.
"Shut up and drive." I was not mated to a human. No way in hell. Humans are weak and pitiful little creatures.

***Mona's POV***

I was jolted away as a stab of fear ripped through my body.
"Emily" I shouted.
"Shhh it's okay. Emily's okay. She's in the car right in front of us." I turned my head to find the sorce of the words. It all came back to me in a flash. The woods, Emily, the snare, and golden boy.
"Ugh where are we?" I groaned. I had a major headache and really had to pee.
"Only a few more minutes and we will be at the house." replied Golden Boy. He was looking at me as if I might rip his head off at any second.
"Who's house. And stop looking at me like that."
"My house." WAit what? He can't be more than 19 and he has his own house?
"You have our own house? How old are you?"
"I'm 21 and the house was my parents. They left it to me when they died, and the guys live with me."
"I'm so sorry! Really. My parents died too, or at least thats what I like to think. I mean you don't really think someone would leave their only kid on some weird people's door steps do you?" Golden Boy had his head cocked to the side and was staring at me like I came from a different planet. "I'm sorry, I'm rambling aren't I?"
"Yeah you are." And that was all he said. Not 'gee I'm sorry and don't worry about it' just 'yeah you are'. I decided to ignore the rude boy and turned my attention to the two guys up front.
