BE KIND

Acts of kindness have the potential to make the world a happier place. An act of kindness can boost feelings of confidence, being in control, happiness and optimism. They may also encourage others to repeat the good deeds they've experienced themselves – contributing to a more positive community

 

 

One day a I saw an old lady,

stranded on the side of the road, but

even in the dim light of day, I could

see she needed help. So I pulled up

in front of her Mercedes and got out.

My Pontiac was still sputtering when I approached her.

Even with the smile on my face, she

was worried. No one had stopped to

help for the last hour or so. Was I

going to hurt her? I didn’t look

safe; I looked poor and hungry. I could see that she was frightened,

standing out there in the cold. I knew how she felt. It was those chills

which only fear can put in you.

I said, “I’m here to help you,

ma’am. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my

name is Oni Tunde Temitope.”

Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for

an old lady, that was bad enough.

I crawled under the car looking

for a place to put the jack, skinning my knuckles a time or two. Soon I

was able to change the tire. But I

had to get dirty and my hands hurt.

As I was tightening up the lug nuts,

she rolled down the window and

began to talk to me. She told me that she was from St. Louis and was

only just passing through. She

couldn’t thank me enough for

coming to her aid.

I just smiled as I closed her

trunk. The lady asked how much she owed me. Any amount would have

been all right with her. She already

imagined all the awful things that

could have happened had I not

stopped. I never thought twice

about being paid. This was not a job to me. This was helping someone in

need, and God knows there were

plenty, who had given me a hand in

the past. I had lived my whole life

that way, and it never occurred to

me to act any other way. I told her that if she really wanted

to pay me back, the next time she
