The girl wasn't very tall compared to me, but with my tall stature no one was very tall. I twirled a shorter piece my long, hip length hair around my finger. I looked around the house while a girl named Brianna, showed me around it. For awhile I have wanted to get a house by myself. I was now nineteen and it was time to get out of the house and on my own. Well I was already kind of on my own already.
I noticed that Brianna liked to flip her hair when she talked. I guessed that she was in her mid twenties. I would be lying if I said she wasn't pretty. Her short, shoulder length hair was a burnt auburn. Her dark brown eyes complemented her pale face. I would place her at around 5'4''. Brianna wore a knee-length, gray skirt and a formal suit-top.
I felt out of place around her. I had put on a bright green Blood On The Dance Floor shirt and light blue pants. I also wore pink and black striped converse. Unlike her, heavy eyeliner surrounded my blue eyes.
"So Miss Miller, what do you think?" I snapped back into reality, I had been in my own little world for the past couple minutes, taking in my surroundings.
"I love it! I think it will fit me perfectly, but please call me Carissa “I said, looking around the room as I did.
"I have one more place to show you, the balcony. Would you like to see it?" she asked me in a high voice. It wasn't annoying, but it was higher than I would like.
I nodded and fallowed her to the living room. She proceeded to the far wall and opened the glass, sliding door. She walked outside and I quickly proceeded too.
The scene from here was beautiful. You could see almost the whole city from here. I stood there for a few moments, taking it all in, until Brianna disrupted me yet again.
"Come on, let’s go call your parents and talk to them," she said to me as she started to walk back inside.
"Um," I started. Brianna stopped walking and looked back towards me," I kind of don't have any parents, I live with my brother."
It was true, I did live with brother and I didn't have any parents. My brother had taken me in when I was only a little girl after our parents died.
Our parents had died in what you would call a war, but to our kind it was a war. There is something I forgot to mention, we are not quite human, I’m an angel. Actually to be exact, a fallen angel. A long time ago, one of my family members, rebelled against God and the other angels. God then sent him down to earth, along with the rest of his family, to live among the humans. Now you might be thinking what's so wrong with living with humans? During that time, living with humans was almost forbidden since we were so different. Living with them was a punishment by itself. Eventually, over time, more and more angels became fallen angels and lived with the humans. They slowly adapted and now live peacefully with them.
We try to hide ourselves from the humans but sometimes they seem to find us. If they do, drastic measures have to be taken. The worst that could happen is death.
Brianna smiled back at me and said, "Ok, let's call your brother then."
I took out my cell phone and quickly dialed his number.
The conversation was short and he said he would be over shortly to come see the house.
A few minutes past by before there was a knock on the door. Brianna stood up and opened it.
Here stood a tall man with dark brown hair and green eyes that matched mine. He was wearing a plain, light gray t-shirt and blue-jeans.
"Oh!" Brianna exclaimed before continuing. "You must be Miss Miller's brother."
"Carissa!" I called out, but she ignored me.
My brother nodded and stuck out his hand for her to shake it. She took his hand in her grasp and shook it. "Jacob," he said, introducing himself.
He took a step in and saw me. A smile spread on his face and he gave me a small wave, which I returned with a small wave too.
"Hey sis," he said.
"Hey," I replied.
He invited himself in and took a quick look around the living room. He didn't say anything though.
"Would you like me to show you around?" Brianna said.
Jake, as I like to call him, nodded and followed.
Walking over the couch, I plopped myself down upon it.
I didn't know what to say when I walked into my room. I've been here for almost a week and still, I feel like I just got here. A small girl sat on the bed across from mine. Her name was, Jessica. I didn't exactly know what her last name was and every time I asked her she would change the subject. Her long black hair was pulled up in a tight pony tail, except for the few strands that hung down in front of her face. Jessica wore a blue tee shirt and pink shorts; she called it her lazy outfit.
She was my roommate.
I really was okay with it; except for the fact that I was told that I wasn't going to have one. It would have been nice to know that I was going to have one. For you know, secret reasons.
"What are you doing?" I asked almost yelling. She had been sitting on her bed with books scattered around her and on the floor. The place was a mess!
"Well, I'm sort of doing a research paper for school," she looked around the room, "I'm so sorry about the mess. I guess I hadn't even realized how much of a mess I have made." Jessica's voice was quiet and light. She reminded me a bit of a fairy.
She stood up and scurried around trying to pick up the mess she had created, off the floor and her bed. She went to pick up a book in front of my feet, I snatched it up before she could though. A large picture was printed on one side of the pages, writing on the other. I recognized the picture. You could see a group of angels looking down on the earth, angels falling and their wings burning up, like they were on fire, and tears streaming down on their faces. You can see the pain and fear in their dark eyes. I knew this. They were fallen angels.
I looked at her with an expression of confusion, trying to hide the fear. How did she figure it out? How did she know my secret? How?
It was like she could read my thoughts. "Actually I've been having these recurring dreams, and I wanted to look it up. That picture is actually an exact picture of my dream. The only thing is, I've never seen that picture in my life. There is no reason for me to have these dreams. Do you know why I am having these dreams?" I shook my head, but really I did have an idea. "Oh okay. Thank you for your help. I'll clean up."
I helped her clean up her books and set them all on her bed.
"I have to get some of these back to the library. I will be back later," she said, leaving the room with a bundle of books.
A thought lingered in my head about her dreams but I wasn't sure if it was true or not. So I called my brother, Jake. I dialed his number. The phone rang a couple times before I heard the line connect and I heard the familiar voice of my brother.
"Hey what's up?" He asked me.
I explained to Jake, Jessica's dream.
"What do you think?" I asked him.
"I have to check, but this might be destined." he sounded concerned. What did he mean by 'destined'?
"What is that supposed to mean?" I was worried. I had no idea what he was talking about.
"You probably don't remember it, but when you were younger I used to read you a book to put you to bed. It was about a young girl who had these dreams, just like the ones that Jess is having, and it turned out that her best friend was her guardian angel. I thought that it was just a story. I didn't actually think it was true. But-"
I cut him off. "Are you saying I might be Jessica's guardian angel?" I almost screamed into the phone. No it couldn't
be right. This couldn't be happening. I felt dizzy suddenly. I sat down upon my bed before I fell over and hit my head.
"Actually, yes. I don't know if it is true, I will have to look into it, but my guess is yes."
"Oh god!" Why? Why me? Why?" I yelled to anybody who was listening really.
I disconnected after a few more minutes and laid back on my bed, staring at the ceiling, trying to take in all that I just heard.
I picked up one of the books that Jess had left here and flipped through it, trying to find answers.
After an hour of paging and reading I threw the book back onto her bed, frustrated and confused.
Jessica stepped quickly into the house, as I opened the door, pushing me out of her way. "Whoa, in a rush?" I asked almost falling backwards. I caught the wall just in time but my head still hit the wall. I got up flinching from the small shock of pain that went through my head, but I was still okay.
She stopped dead in her tracks. Jessica had the strangest look on her face. Her facial expression was a mix of what I thought to be: frustration, bewilderment, and fascination. It was an odd combination.
"It's you, isn't it?" Jessica practically shouted. I took a step backwards, taken by what she had said, hitting my head of the wall again. I stood there for a few moment rubbing the back of my head and staring at her with confusion. What was she talking about? Was she crazy? She continued, "You are he reason for all these dreams! It's all your fault! I never had any dreams like this before I moved into here. So it must be you. I know this might sound like I'm crazy, but I'm not. I have a question for you," I nodded for her to go on, " but are you a fallen angel? I want you to answer honestly, and if you think I am utterly, unconditionally insane please feel free to say so. Don't worry I wont tell anyone."
I was aghast. How did she find out? I thought she was crazy but at the same time she wasn't. I had to tell her. She already figured it out and I definitely was going to lie to her and accuse her of being totally insane and that she didn't know what she was talking about. Because the truth was that she did.
I took my hoodie off and uncurled my wings. The extended out through slits I had cut in my shirt. Long black wings unfurled before her eyes. She took a few steps back, mouth agape, and feel onto the couch. I looked down at the ground.
My wings were one of the few that had red tipped feathers. Most other fallen angel's were pure black. Each wing was about six feet long and almost hit the ceiling. I folded my wings around me so they were out of the way.
"W-what?" Jessica struggled to say.
"I don't know if it is exactly true but I might be your guardian angel," I explained.
I rolled my shoulders back and my wings contracted back into my back. I took a few steps forward and she curled into a ball trying to get away from me. I stopped and outstretched my hand as to comfort her from far away and to show her that I wasn't going to hurt her.
I could tell that she relaxed a little but she was still scared. I walk slowly over to the couch and sat next to her. Jessica scooted over to the side of the couch. I didn't move, not wanting to push her. I explained everything to her. My family, how became one, everything. I tried to make it so that she would understand. It seemed as though she did. She relaxed a bit more after our long conversation.
We sat in silence as she tried to comprehend what I just said. Her hair, half fallen into her face, as she concentrated. She finally spoke, "And your brother, he is one too?" She asked meekly. I nodded and her expression went back to confusion.
I walked into my room and called my brother.
"You did what?" Jake screamed through the phone.
"She already knew so I showed her," I replied. "I didn't think that telling Jessica about the fallen would be such a big deal, for she already guessed it."
"This can get us into big trouble you know. What if Jeremy found out? He could banish us to hell, never to get out again. Another war could start and either the human or angel population could vanish. Do you want that? How could you trust her so much? You know not to trust mere mortals. What is wrong with you?"
"First of all Jeremy isn't
going to find out and I've talked to Jessica enough to trust her. And they are not just 'mere mortals', you know a lot of humans are nicer then they seem. It is the bad ones that give them a bad rep. And don't you talk to me like that! There is nothing wrong with me! It was my decision and that’s final!"
I hung up on Jake before he could say anything else. He tried calling back a second later but I ignored him and turned off my phone.
I flung myself onto my bed and closed my eyes.
Fire developed everywhere. Burning brightly, hot as
hell! This place was hell, quite literally. I looked up only to find sky. Looking down I found the same. I was falling! Faces looked down at me from above, smirks laid upon their face. As much as I tried I could not stop myself from falling. Laughter surrounded me and for a minute everything went dark and a sharp pain came. Or what I thought was pain. I awoke to find myself back in the place I started. I looked up to find the same people that were laughing at me only moments ago, to be falling from the sky too. Each one landing not so gently on the hard floor below. Wing burning a bright red with fire. Each one struggling to get up and extinguish their burning wings. Everywhere I see are angels looking confused and distraught.
As for me I felt nothing. No burning, no pain, just numbness. Nothing.
I didn't exactly know why I was here. Questions ran through my mind. Why am I here? What is with all of these angels? What was happening?
I noticed one thing that was out of place. A small girl, curled up in a ball, sat in the middle of the floor. Human. She shook, as if she was scared. She was. I couldn't see who it was, for her long hair covered her face. In the darkness it seemed black but I wasn't quite sure. I walked slowly over to her. On my way over I looked up and almost got hit with a falling body. Luckily I missed it just in time, but they hit the hard stone ground. I kept walking as if I never noticed it.
I continued to walk over to the small girl. She wore a white dress covered in red splatters of blood. From what I could hear it sounded like she was crying. Though it was hard to hear through all the crying and screaming. She looked up at me. Her look took me by surprise but I continued to look.
They say that the passageway to the soul is trough your eyes. That you can see a person's soul through them. If this was true, that is what I was seeing. Her eyes were pure black. She had no white or any type of color in her eyes. That's when it hit me. She had no eyes! Instead the girl had hollow eye sockets, where her eyes would be if she did have eyes. She smiled. Her lips curled back and it expanded literally the width of her face. Rows and rows of sharp pointed teeth lined her smile. They reminded me of needles.
Jessica? It was. Her crying turned to laughing and she looked at me like she wanted me dead.
Startled, I let out a small gasp and took a few steps back. Determining if I should run, I almost fell backwards when a pair of cold hands caught me at my waist. Though in the depths of hell anything felt cold down here. A shiver ran down my back from the sudden cold. I didn’t really want to turn around and look who caught me, for the fear of what I find. After a few moments of mental preparation I decided to turn around. The same look appeared on the face behind me. No eyes and sharp teeth. I ripped out of his hold. Well tried to anyways. No matter how much I struggled he would not let go. I tried to pry his fingers off of me but it was no use. As much as I tried I just couldn't get him off of me. I looked again.
This time instead of what I had saw before, it was my brother. A clear liquid ran down his face. Tears. I turned around and hugged him for a reason that I didn't know. He hugged me back and I felt a sharp pain in my back. I let go of Jake and let out a long scream. I fell to the floor. When I turned to look back at Jake, it was replaced by the original face I had seen before. This time the face was full of hate and passion. Another sharp pain ripped down my back and I let out another scream. Arching my back from the excruciating pain. I curled up into a ball in the hard stone ground. A red substance surrounded me. It smelled like metal. Blood.
My blood! Laughter surrounded me yet again and I closed my eyes. I knew if I laid here I had two options. Either they would eventually leave me alone, or lie here and die from loss of blood. The chances of these things leaving me alone, were not that great.
