Morning again
The lonely man wakes up to a blue desert sky
Wondering where, wondering why
The sun is piercing, shadow nowhere to be seen
Yet he walks on, tired, but ever so keen
All his friends and lovers are dead, left far behind in the dust
Inside him his insides are like old machines, lined with rust
Yet he walks on, weary but unafraid
It can’t be far now, not long to wait
‘Till he reaches his mystical goal, the place where angels sing
Where the buildings are tall, where a man can grow wings
Where all is well, all is fine
Have another glass of wine
In the place where the light of life shines
Nobody cries, nobody whines
Where there’s always time to spare
Never any cross to bear
His dreamy face lights up with a smile
Just a little way now, only a while
For now though…he walks on
No
I don’t want to hear it
I don’t want to hear the warning
It’s screaming from all sides
It’s driving me insane
And it’s not just me, either
All around I can see
People just like me
Living their lives with their heads in the sand
With their fingers in their ears
With their mouths wide open, screaming
‘Lalala, I can’t hear you!
Just let me live my life!
Let me enjoy it while it lasts!’
And I realize
No matter what we do
No matter what we say
No matter how good our causes are
We’re all just sandheads
It’s just another grey day
I leave for work and get my Starbucks, black
At work I watch green numbers flash across a black screen
I go home feeling blue
It’s like all the colors have disappeared from my life
When’s the last time I had fun?
Suddenly, an idea
A voice speaks in my head
“Go where the lights are red
Or are you just yellow?
Go on, give her some green
Who knows what she’ll do for you…”
It’s amazing the lengths to which our minds will go to deny the white emptiness that our lives have become.
Innocent
Like the newborn, asleep in his crib
Like the toddler, building castles out of sand
Like the kid, batting for the little league team
Innocent
Like the teenager, studying for his finals
Like the young lovers, leaving the harbor of youth hand in hand
Like the eager worker, just trying to make a living
Innocent
Like the kids-man, settling down in the ‘burbs
Like the graying father, seeing the kids safely off in their boat
Like the elderly widower, stabbed in an alley by a petty thief
Innocent
But dead all the same
Tears still shed at his grave
Agonized cries for the fallen innocent
It’s an unfair world.
Screams, death and open gore
The blood of others is what we want
Tribal wars
Roman conquerors
Viking invaders
The blood of others is what we want
Pagan slaughters
Genocides in the new world
Witches burned at the stake
The blood of others is what we want
Kings guillotined
Lungs blistered away by sulfur mustard
Six million gassed
Screams, death and open gore
The blood of others is what we want
