Preface
“NO!” My scream could be heard miles away and yet, it didn’t stop the bullet. I saw it all in slow motion; it punctured his chest and disappears into his body leaving a bloody mess on the floor. “Benjamin!” I rushed to his body as quickly as my unresponsive legs could and dropped to my knees, “No, no, no, no…”
“Maddie, it’s going to be alright.” It was clear how much it pained him to speak, “I love you and don’t you ever forget that.” As I stared into his beautiful sapphire eyes I watched the light dim, and then altogether disappear. I was vaguely aware of my shriek of agony and heart wrenching sobs, my attention focused solely and wholly on Benjamin, quietly begging him to speak to me. I wrenched my stare away from his eyes to the blood that are now all over my jeans. Benjamin’s blood. You never know what you want, until it is taken from you.
Chapter 1
“I NEED SOME HOT STUFF BABY THIS EVENING! SOME HOT STUFF BABY TONIGHT!” Groaning I rolled over to answer my cell phone. I glanced at the time. FOUR IN THE FREAKING MORNING! Pissed, I grabbed my phone and flipped it open.
“Hello.” My voice sounded sleepy and annoyed to my own ears, but who could blame me? I mean only freaks get up so early.
“Madiza!” My best friend voice was one of urgency and immediately panic started to rise in me.
“What happen are you alright?” My previous emotions lost in a haze of panic and worry.
“No, no I’m not.” Stacy sounded so, for lost of a better word, depressed.
“How can I help?”
“You can help me by getting your ass over here and tell me which one of these outfits I should wear today.” Irritation overwhelmed me. I stared at the phone for a moment, not knowing whether I should hang up on her or yell at her for waking me so early in the damn morning. Taking a calming deep breath, I decided to finish this discussion and go back to sleep calmly and quietly.
“Are you telling me that you woke me so early in the friggin’ morning because you don’t know what to wear?!” Each word got louder until I was all but shrieking. Okay, so I’m not a calm person, sue me. The silence on the other end of the phone lasted so long that I actually calm down.
“Er…..um….maybe……yeah pretty much.” Stacy was probably a little scared…okay let me stop lying, scared pretty damn much.
“Stacy, wear anything you want and I’ll just go back to my beauty sleep, kapeech?” Without waiting for a reply, I turned off my phone and drifted off back to dream land.
Allow me to introduce myself, I’m Madiza Medina and I’m not normal. I’m half human and half vampire, or like the vamps usually call my kind, I’m half and half. My mother was a human (note the “was”) when she had me, and my father, obviously, is a vampire. I was never accepted in the Underworld of vamps so my parents took me out of that horrid place and from then on we lived in the human world. I am now a 16 year old teenager to the humans (I’m really 100 years old), living a normal human life, except my once a month feeding. My family is also a gifted family. My mother shields herself and others around her both mentally and physically, my father control the earth’s elements and I, well let’s just say that I got a lot. I can shield, control earth’s elements, read minds, teleport, and electrocute. No man is ever right for me, so I’m single and damn proud about it and I don’t give a shit about what the students says behind my back because they know, I know, and we all know that I can kick their ass if they dare wrong talk in my face.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. The house across the street alarm was going off. I groaned, silently cursing my excellent ears, and stretched to my full five feet nine inches height; popping bones in the process.
Glad to hear that you’re finally awake, my mother thought, I was beginning to fear that you died in your sleep. I just grumbled and headed to the bathroom to prepare for my nightmare of boredom, school. Five minutes later I bounced down the smooth, golden stairs and headed to the kitchen. On the table were cupcakes and milkshakes, but……no parents. I used my power to find their thoughts but…nothing. I heard movement behind me but reacted too late. The person jumped on me and held my arms and legs down so that I couldn’t move. I didn’t fight back for the smell was familiar.
“Gotcha,” My dad grinned at me wickedly. I rolled my eyes at his triumphant expression; men and their egos.
“Only because you cheated,” I accused when he released me and back up. “You had mom shielding your thoughts from me so it doesn’t count.” Mom came around from underneath the stairs, laughing and smiling in affection while I scowled at dad’s innocent face.
“Oh, darling don’t be a sore loser”, dad was still radiating with triumphant. However I knew just how to get back at him. I smiled sweetly at him making his expression turn wary.
“So dad what are you getting mother for her birthday coming up? I really hope it not that toy ball you had intended to buy for her.” His face turned into a satisfying scowl. You promised that you wouldn’t tell her! I just smiled sweetly and turned to mom, who was waiting for more information on her birthday gift, but I just wanted dad to get in trouble so I’m not going to mention that he give that idea up after I all but smack him at the back of the head.
“Err…um…I just remembered that I’m supposed to be at the office right now”, dad said, glancing at his wrist watch. “See you guys later.” He turned to leave but mom snagged him back.
“Not till I hear more about that birthday present?” he groaned and I stifled a laugh.
“Bye. Don’t want to be late for school.” I grabbed a cupcake and was on my way out when dad screamed his thought at me; WAIT TILL YOU GET HOME MADIZA MARIE MEDINA! I laughed loudly now that I was away from my home.
I glanced right and left, checking to see if anyone was looking before I headed into the forest. I don’t know why, but I felt like running. I took off, enjoying the wind whipping against my warm face, blowing my hair back, and the stretching of my legs as I increase in speed. I reached to school in less than three minutes, faster than if I had walked. I walked to a car to see my reflection so that I could fix any ruffle in my hair the wind might’ve caused, examining my clothing as well. I was wearing a black and red strip tank top and black pencil leg jeans and I absolutely adored how it fitted on my perfect body. I listened for Stacy’s always active brain but found nothing. She probably still was trying to figure out what to wear.
I took a deep breath to prepare myself for the same education all over again when I caught a whiff of something absolutely delicious. Blood, except it wasn’t fully human blood; it smelled delicious, like raspberries or maybe something sweeter. I felt the familiar ache in my throat when I’m thirsty, but I just drank yesterday. Puzzled and hungry, I stepped around the car not paying attention at all, and stepped right into someone who felt like a rock (which is a surprise considering that I’m half vampire, I’m almost indestructible). I staggered backward, struggling to keep my balance, when an arm wrapped around my waist and pulled my back into the rock figure. My head span, not because I rammed into someone, but because this person smelled delicious like the scent I had just picked up not even a minute ago.
“Hey, are you alright?” a concern, deep voice asked. I opened my eyes and stared straight into blue sapphire eyes.
Chapter 2
It felt like I was swimming in warm blue water, drowning in his eyes. I was shocked back into reality when I ‘heard’ Stacy come into the school yard, her thoughts excited. I shook my head to clear it for I was a bit dazed, me, Madiza Marie Medina, half breed vampire of 100yrs dazed, well there’s a first to everything. I realized that the delicious stranger was still holding me to his rock hard body and was waiting for my response.
“Err…..um….yeah I’m fine.” I pushed against him to indicate that I wanted him to release me and he did so immediately, if not reluctantly.
“Okay, if you say so…” he trailed off, still looking concern. An unfamiliar feeling washed through me by the way he was staring at me, with concern and warmth, but I didn’t analyze it to see what emotion it was.
“I’m great, honest.” I smiled at him and heard his heart picked up, beating twice the normal rate. Who is that hottie Madiza is talking to? Of course that was Stacy. The stranger wasn’t thinking anything rational so it couldn’t have been him; apparently I’ve stunned him by my smile. Humans, so simple-minded, but he isn’t human. I could hear Stacy footsteps hurrying in my direction, hoping to get a chance to talk to the boy, so I decided to depart before she get the chance to charm him…but the question is why? Just then the bell rang the phrase “Saved by the bell” played in my mind as this was my chance to go.
“Bye, and nice meeting you.” I turn to leave but a hand caught my wrist pulling me to a stop. I’ve didn’t notice before but now I can feel electric currents following from his hand to my body, from the startle look on his face, he noticed it too.
“Wait, I didn’t catch your name.” That’s probably because I didn’t give you it, I thought, mentally rolling my eyes. “I’m Benjamin Taylor.”
“I’m Madiza Medina; it’s nice to make your acquaintance.” I pulled free of his, amazingly strong, grip and walked towards the school, grabbing the disappointed Stacy with me. I had to struggle to maintain the slow human pace as I hurried to my class, grateful to put a distance between me and the delicious boy. I entered my classroom, finally letting go of my friend’s arm, and sat at the back of the class, breathing hard as if I just ran a marathon (not that running is a problem for me at all). Stacy glanced at me, thoughts full of questions, but sensed that I need a moment alone to sort out my head. However the teacher, Ms. Smith, didn’t give me such courtesy.
We went through the usual, registration, name calling, blah, blah, blah. What really caught my attention was the introduction of a new student. Oh no, I mentally groan. Guess who was the new student….that’s right Benjamin Taylor, and I was going to try avoiding him, karma is such a pain in the ass. But wait it gets better, guess where he is going to have to sit, yep in the only vacant desk right beside me. He walked with a confident air around him, every girl he passed all but faint and some even had their boyfriend right next to them, glaring in hatred and envy at Benjamin. Idiots, it’s their girlfriend looking at him and their glaring at the poor boy. I slid down my chair hoping that he wouldn’t see me, feeling resentful as I do. I’m one of a kind; I shouldn’t feel the need to hide from an inferior. With that pep talk I righted myself in my chair, took out a book and pretended to read.
“Madiza, it’s a small world isn’t it?” his voice was so attractive that I abandoned my futile attempt to ignore him immediately.
“The smallest,” I listened in onto his thoughts wondering what is going on in that attractive head of his; wait did I just say his head is attractive? Ugh whatever. What is she? She is definitely not human or not wholly human at least. I tensed, no one, not even Stacy, ever suspected I’m not fully human. Most kids shy away from me, following their natural instincts when it tell them that danger was near, but then again Stacy isn’t a normal human being, she doesn’t have the same rational thinking of a normal person. The bell rang and I fled. I needed to put more distance between me and this weirdly fascinating boy.
The day passed in a blur, going from class to class, getting work that I did years ago, and hiding from the new kid. At lunch I walked in with Stacy as usual and headed to buy food. Since the cafeteria cooks food that reeks to me, I bought only a bottle of water and a fruit salad. As I passed by a table I heard a vicious thought, planning to embarrass someone in front of someone. I listened more intently to locate the thought. Alison, the popular, spoil, rich brat of the school; she was planning to dump her milkshake on my clothes to humiliate me in front of Benjamin. I saw her plan and decided to keep me clothes clean today.
She got up from her table and pretended to trip, her smelly milkshake going up into the air. Using vampire speed, I subtly pushed her under the milkshake and pulled Stacy back a step with me. I have to admit that it was pretty amusing for a petty human prank. The pink mess splashed all over her white dress (what a bad day to wear white) and blond hair. She looked at herself in a stunned manner, looked at me, back at her clothing and screamed in wordless fury. She stamped out of the room leaving a bunch of teenagers literally rolling on the floor laughing. I’ve never like her anyway. I carried on to my table, with the chuckling Stacy at my side, and noticed Benjamin staring at me in a suspiciously intent way, causing my hair to stick up at the nape of my neck. He suspected that I did that to Alison, and he was correct but why did he think it was me?
I sat at my table, Stacy was going on and on about how Alison deserves that, I nodded my head and mummer agreements but I wasn’t paying much attention to her. I was focused on Benjamin’s thoughts; it was safe for now because he was in a deep conversation with a next person, Leon, about cars. No matter what breed they are, boys are the same. Benjamin and I made eye contact and thought at the same time, “Who is he/she?”
Chapter 3
Benjamin P.O.V
After the lunch bell rang I walked back to my registration class slowly, unwilling to see the attractive strange girl again. When I came in she was already seated, pretending to ignore as she had done this morning; but she was too tense to be people watching outside the window. Unlike the first time, I didn’t try to start a conversation with her; instead I gazed around the room testing my theory. I looked at our home room teacher and imagined her falling backward off her desk and the principal, Mr. Reese, catch her on the floor. I heard a stifled laugh that would’ve been too low for human ears but since I’m half fairy (A/N it was an inspiration to make him half fairy and not the girl…don’t judge I’ll make it as manly as I can) I heard it. Okay, so she can read minds.
Well, I’m gifted too; aside from the ability to fly, I’m emphatic (I can feel people emotions and make them feel how I want them to) and I can reflect pain, which is a very useful gift. I have to guard what I’m thinking now that I know for sure that Madiza is a mind reader. I cringed internally at the sound of the high pitched bell going off at my sensitive ears. Once again I hear that stifled laugh from Madiza as she started to pack her stuff up. Well if she could be rude and listen in on my thoughts I can take a sneak peek at her emotions; currently she was experiencing mixed emotions: amusement, confusion, frustration and attraction, attraction to what I didn’t know.
I packed up and headed out of the school building; looking both ways I inconspicuously head for the bushes, I felt like flying today. When covered by the trees, I spread my wings and jumped from the ground, flying low so that I wouldn’t be seen. Suddenly, I heard a gasp and turn quickly to see Madiza standing in the woods one moment and vanished the next moment. Eyes wide I descended to the ground as one word passed through my mind; Vampire.
Madiza P.O.V
Oh shoot! Oh damn! Oh shit! Was I seeing wrong? Damn it! I knew I shouldn’t have followed him. All these thoughts and more raced through my mind as fast as I raced home. I flew in the door just to be attacked by pies. I stood looking at my now damaged clothing, “What the f-”.
“Na uh, no swearing young lady” my mother voice said, more like hissed, sternly. “You might not think it but you are still too young to use such words.” She emerged from the stairway just to stop and stare at me mouth open in surprise. We stare at each other for a moment, me murderously angry glaring and her shell shock which was quickly turning into amusement. A pie unexpectedly flew from behind and landed on my hair, and my mom couldn’t take it anymore she burst in a fit of laughter as the cream of the pie dripped down my back. Oh yeah, dad is going to pay big time.
“DADDY, COME HERE THIS INSTANT!” I shrieked, gosh I knew he was going to get me back but my hair? That’s just pushing his luck. I heard the front door slam shut as my father raced to see what the matter is, acting all innocent and concern. As if. He looked at me, his mouth corners twitching as he tried not to smile and appear innocent.
“What happened, honey?” I opened my mouth snap at him when something slimy dropped on my head from the roof, looking up I saw slimy, puke-looking substance dropping from the roof and onto my face. I let out a blood-curling shriek; it was so loud that if the neighbors across the road were home, they would’ve come running. My dad couldn’t hold it in any longer and was doubled over laughing his ass off. With a growl of pure rage, I dropped my bag and lunged for him. He quickly moved out of the way and ran up the stairs, with a smirk, I teleported behind him and give him a knuckle sandwich behind his head with so much force he fell over the banister.
“Hey no fair!” was his genius reply, I scowled at him a tad playfully; my dad can be more of a child than me.
“Well next time I hope you think better before you, um I don’t know…MESS WITH MY HAIR!!” I jumped from the banister onto the floor but he rolled away before I can body slam him, which I would’ve regret later on since mom loved our house. We ran outside and I picked up a tree trunk bigger than myself and threw it at him. He dodged it quickly but didn’t see when I brought stones up from the ground and aim it at him. Only around two managed to hit him before his wind blew the rest away. Placing his hands on the floor I felt the earth vibrate and began to open up. Jumping up and down I managed to avoid a few holes but ended up falling into a naturally made hole, oh how I loathe the irony gods. I teleported and electrocuted him, and so we carried on.
“ENOUGH YOU TWO,” My mother stomped outside and shrieked. “You’ve been going for more than an hour now.”
“HE/SHE STARTED IT!” My dad and I simultaneously yelled at the same time, and then scowled at each other. We regarded each other to see you won the fight. Dad had more injuries than me so that meant I won, even though we heal quickly we can still see the one with the most damage. With a smug smirk I started to walk in the house when I caught a familiar delicious smell. Turning sharply I caught sight of Benjamin’s beautiful wings before he vanished completely from my sight.
“What the hell was that?” My dad was curious since he caught the scent also along with my mom. They both came and stood on each side of me like they do in a battle, staring in the direction I was transfixed on.
“That right there was a half fairy” was my reply as we continue to stare in the direction Benjamin disappeared to.

Chapter 4
I tensed when I once again smelled a familiar scent coming behind me, could it be him? I turned and got a big wet smack on my lips; I really do mean wet, it was like he licked his lips before coming to kiss me. As quickly as possible I pushed him off me.
“What’s wrong babe? Wait, what the hell happened to you? You look horrible.” I rolled my eyes; Matthew always had a wonderful way with words (note the sarcasm). I wiped the spit from my lips and looked at my appearance; during the hustle some of the pie mess came off but I still had that disgusting substance in my hair.
“First of all, I’m not your babe; we broke up a decade ago. Secondly, what happened to me is none of your business since we broke up a decade ago!” My parents once again came by my side staring at Matthew with open resentment.
“Oh it’s the mutt again,” My dad said, staring at Matthew like he would stare at his foot after stepping in shit. A decade ago I would’ve defended Matthew, but now I’m not rebellious to date another one of his kind.
“Aw pap, don’t be like that,” Matthew obnoxiously replied. What on earth did I see in the guy? “I just came to tell my princess that I’m joining her in high school.” He turned his captivating green-grey eyes on me and I had to fight against shiver that came over me every time I stare in those eyes. “Bye babe, I’m going to see you soon.” And just like that he turned and walked off into the woods, not even a backward glance at me.
I couldn’t help staring at him as he walked away; Matthew was actually a pretty good looking guy. He had bronze tousled hair that suited him perfectly, thick eyebrows pulled down over his green-grey eyes making them look mysterious, a tall body with muscles that ripple whenever he moved, and an ass that could make any girl drool all over herself. I realized that I was staring at him with my mouth slightly open for a while when I felt my dad pinch my arm causing pain to be shot up my arm.
“OW! What was that for?” I turned glaring at him and saw a smirk on his face.
“You were drooling all over yourself, I was just knocking some sense into you before you did something stupid………again.” With a furious huff I marched inside, grabbed my bag off the floor and went straight to my room. Within a few minutes I came down stairs freshly showered and dressed in clean clothes. I met my family in the living room and sat down so that we could go over the afternoon events.
“Okay, first thing, Madiza how did you know that the stranger in the woods was a half fairy?” My mom was usually leader of family discussions since me and father don’t always get along well as I’m sure you had witnessed previously.
“Well……” For some reason I hesitated to tell my parents about Benjamin, I didn’t want them to find out about him, the question was why? Shaking the abnormal feeling I went on to tell them how I met him at school and how I followed him into the woods and saw him fly. By time I was finished they were gaping at me while I tried not to fidget under their gaze. Slightly shaking herself out of her thoughts, my mom returned to the matter at hand.
“Okay…well that will be dealt with later. Now we have to discuss the mutt…oh I mean Matthew.” I still can’t believe that she went out with him! I mean what was she thinking? She had to choose his kind, really? I’m sure she could’ve done better than that. Seriously—
“Mom I could hear EVERYTHING you are thinking…..can you tone it down a little?” She rolled her eyes at me and continued to discuss Matthew with my dad, rudely ignoring me. I got up from my chair, not wanting to be in the discussion about my ex, and left the room.
That night I tossed and turned, unable to fully rest because my mind was still on Matt and Benjamin. Around early morning I made the decision to avoid both of the boys that would ruin my life or, less dramatically stated, invade my usual life pattern. Fully contented in my decision, I drifted off to sleep listening to my parents light snores from their room across from mine, dreading the next morning.
Beep. Beep. Beep. I swear I’m going to destroy our neighbour’s clock. Groaning I got up out of bed and got ready for school. With a last lustful glance at my bed I made my way down stairs and saw the placed cleaned up from my father’s oh so wonderful prank (oh please note the sarcasm). Quickly grabbing something to place in my stomach, I ran outside to avoid my parents and jumped into my car. Considering that I’m addicted to speed, I got a fast car for my 99th birthday, well 15th birthday for the humans. Why did my parents wait so long to give me a car? I had no idea.
I was one of the first students to arrive at the school in my haste to escape my parents’ lectures and advices to stay away from the guys, blah, blah, blah. Okay it was rude of me but so what? I had years to listen to them and now I can bet that I know everyone of their lectures by heart……no joke. I heard whistles as people arrived at the school admiring my car. I rolled my eyes, amused of how a silly car can attract such attention. I mean yeah my car was some good eye candy but a car is just a car for me. My car was a Silver Porsche Carrera GT that cost quite an amount of money. I stepped out and got some more whistles, this time for my body. I rolled my eyes once again, and headed for the entrance of the school when I was yanked by the arm, caught by surprise. I stumbled into the instigator’s chest, trying to maintain my balance. I pushed away from the familiar chest and give him my “If only looks can kill” glare.
“This better be important or so help me I’m going to rip your-” his lips rudely cut off the rest of my threat. For a moment I was too shock to move, well to do anything, his lips were moving against mine in such a familiar way, trying to deepen the kiss. When his hands started to wander that’s when I snapped out of my state of shock and disbelief. I placed my hands around his neck and sweetly kissed him back, he groaned in triumph and I smiled. I gently nipped his bottom lip then raised my leg up and kneed him where the sun refuses to shine with such a force that I swore I heard a crack. He let out a scream of pain (and I do mean a girl scream) and dropped to the floor in pain. I smiled in satisfaction and stooped down to his level, ignoring curious eyes around us.
“Next time you touch me I won’t be so gentle, Matthew.” I got up and headed for my locker, receiving resentful and envious looks from girls who obviously wanted a chance with Matt and fearful looks from guys, some protecting their “little friend”, scared that I would hurt them; that I had to laugh at. I got what I needed from my locker and headed for my first class, unconsciously scanning the area for Benjamin with no positive results, feeling a ridiculous pang of disappointment I carried on with the motions of school.
The day past in a blur, filled with disappointment that Benjamin didn’t come to school, anger at myself for feeling that foolish and unexplainable disappointment, resentment for Matt who unfortunately healed quickly so the pain in his penis is gone but hopefully it was still tender, and annoyance for the amount of homework the cold-hearted teachers gave me even though I would finish it in a matter of seconds. I drove home knowing that I’m about to receive the same lecture I escaped from this morning. With a rueful sigh, I opened the door and saw my parents patiently, sitting on the sofa. I carelessly dropped my bag to the floor and sat in the chair opposite to them and placed an expressionless face on while my parents talked. “You should be more aware of your surroundings……” blah, blah, blah. “No one is your true friend; they will just use you…..” yada, yada, yada.
I kind of blocked out the rest idly wondering where Benjamin was and what he could be doing right this moment. I shook my head to get the foolish questions out of my head and my parents perhaps thought that I was disagreeing with whatever they were saying, set off again with another lecture. Once again they were ignored by me. Why was I suddenly curious about an inferior fairy?
Maybe it’s because you like him said my inner voice.
No, I don’t.
De nail isn’t just a river in Egypt.
Whatever, I don’t need to listen to you.
Then why are you?
What’s the matter with me? I’m talking to myself and thinking about a silly boy. Troubled, I wondered if I indeed liked Benjamin Taylor.
*****************************************************************************************
Benjamin P.O.V.
I had my wings spread out, the setting sun warming them. On a normal day I would’ve enjoy the sensation but today I was on a mission. Elegantly landing on my feet, I folded my wings in and walked into my palace, my guards bowing before me. It does my ego good to be welcomed like that. My faithful servant and best friend Simon came running towards me, his brown hair tousled as if he ran his fingers through it many times, his expression which was stressed prior to seeing was now filled with relief, and his wings which were different shades of red was now being folded as if he had intended to fly somewhere.
“Oh, Prince Benjamin, I was just about to look for you. The King and Queen require your presence, they said it was urgent.” Simon said it all in a rush when I was in hearing range; then he chuckled. “They said that I must even drag you if it comes to that.” I rolled my eyes at him.
“You would drag me to my parents?” I feigned horror, “Please have sympathy upon me.”
“Always the charmer, Benny.” He grinned, shaking his head. I bowed at his feet.
“Such a high compliment coming from you, Mr. Player,” He rolled his eyes, knowing I was only joking. We barely have time on our schedules to date females no less bed them. “Do you have any idea why my parents would want an urgent meeting with me, Si?”
“Nope,” He made a soft “pop” sound when saying the P. “But if their tone was any indication, I would advise you to hurry.”
“See you around, buddy.” I said waving off as I walk away. Ignoring the other servants, I walked to my parents’ chamber and knocked on the door. After having consent, I pushed open the door. “You wanted to see me?” Both parents were at the desk in the middle of the room, while containers where on each side of them. My father was sitting behind the desk while my mother was perched on top of it.
“Yes, take a seat, son.” My dad gestured to the chair opposite to him. There was tension in the air, so thick I could slice it with a knife. Warily I took the seat and waited for one to begin.
“Son, you know that you are now coming to age where you will have to be married.” I narrowed my eyes, warning bells going off in my head. “You’ve seen many balls, many beautiful women and yet you’ve chosen none to court.” I opened my mouth to speak but he raised his hand silencing me. “Allow me to finish.” Was it my imagination or did my parents seem to be a little uncomfortable? “You’ve been taking your own time picking and choosing, undecided for so long that your mother and I decided to intervene.” Oh no.
“What did you guys do?” I got scared at how he said “intervene” and “marriage” in the same sentence. It was my mother that answered me.
“Honey,” she cleared her throat. “We chose a bride for you.” My mind went blank; shock shoved every thought out the window. Then angered turned my vision completely red.
“YOU DID WHAT?!?” A small part of my mind noted that I was standing up and that my chair had fell due to the force of me standing. My parents looked shocked at my behavior. What? Did they expect me to be all happy and joyful that I didn’t get to pick my bride? That I don’t even know the damn girl; if it is a girl, it could be a man for all I know!
“Calm down, Benjamin.” My father recovered first, anger clouding his face.
“CALM DOWN? CALM DOWN? LIKE HELL I’LL CALM DOWN!” I was spitting mad, I absolutely HATED when people handled my affairs without my knowledge and my parents knew that.
“Benjamin James Taylor, you will calm down this instant.” Uh oh, my sensible part of my brain said, no one messes with that tone. However, my insane part was over powering that reason. I started to pace as I always do when I’m agitated. My mother, the problem solver, tried to intervene to calm both of her boys down.
“Benny, you know we only want the best for you,” I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at the overused parent line. “We just wanted to take that tough decision off of your load of responsibilities.”
“But, what happened to what I want, Mother?” I stopped my pacing and faced her. “What about who I want to marry? Fairies mating last forever and I don’t want to be stuck with the wrong girl.” The mating process is quite simple but unbreakable. It starts off like a human wedding but blood will be exchanged creating a bound that no one can escape from with the exception of death.
“ENOUGH!” My father patience eventually came to an end. “Accept this, Benjamin, what’s done is done and unless you find someone within three months’ time, you will be married to me and your mother’s choice.” Okay, that’s acceptable, but now’s the time to change subject. This was so not over though.
“So, you know how you made me go to high school to take up my spare time?” My parents’ eyes narrowed in suspension at my non-so-subtle change of subject.
“Yeah?” They simultaneously said.
“Well, there’s a half vampire there.” Both parents froze then looked at each other.
“Are you certain, son?” I looked between the two of them sensing that they weren’t telling me something. Something important.
“Positive.” They exchanged a look again. “Ok, what aren’t you telling me?” My dad got up from his seat and walked to one of the containers and pulled out an old-looking book. He came back to the desk and showed me it, The History of Fairies.
“Son, you know most of our history but not all.” I fixed my chair and sat, sensing a lesson is about to talk place. He opened the book but didn’t look at it as he started to talk. “There was once a time before the treaty with the vampires were broken; a vampire thought it was smart to mate with a human to experiment how their offspring would come out. As it turned out vampires and humans can produce offspring. The children aged extremely quickly until a certain age; they have a heartbeat, extraordinary sight and hearing like the vampires and they are almost invincible. Everyone was filled with wonder with this new creation but the hybrid couldn’t and wouldn’t be controlled.” He took a deep breath. “One night, exactly three years after the hybrid birth, it attacked. It sped through the villages, killing everyone in its path but it seemed to have a liking to fairies most of all. Every adult and child was drained of their blood. Few escaped but the monster hunted most of them down until the fairies had to send one of their few surviving soldiers to kill him.”
“Did the soldier manage to kill him?” Stupid question, I know.
“Well obviously since we are here today.” I gave him my best “You are so not funny” look.
“How did he kill the hybrid?”
“As generations past, the knowledge became lost. No one knows for sure now.”
“So, what am I supposed to do with the half vampire girl at my school? Kill her?” My parents looked at each other, telepathically talking to one another. I wished I had that gift like them. My father looked back at me, seemingly coming to a decision.
“No, don’t kill her. Study her, learn her weaknesses and report back to us and we will decide from there.” Nodding I got up from my chair. “Oh, and Benjamin,” I paused looking at him. “Don’t think the conversation about your marriage is over, you will have to meet your bride-to-be soon, Son.”
Groaning, I left their chambers and hurried to my room. Closing the door quietly behind me, I absently walked to my bed and sat down. Yes, I would spy on Madiza for my parents; gain her trust so that it would be much easier to kill her. A simple plan, but why do I feel so hesitant to do it? Shaking my head at that ridiculous feeling, I laid on my bed. There was no reason to feel hesitant, I’m a two hundred year old half fairy whom had seen and done more devious plans than this. I probably just needed get my brain check. Still feeling uneasy, I slept dreaming of a beautiful stranger killing all of my family.
