Present Simple

Example sentences: 

+ I like apple. 

-  I don't like apple.

? Do I like apple?

Yes, I do. or No, I don't.

? What do I like?

 

+ Peter eats meat.

- Peter doesn't eat meat.

? Does Peter eat meat?

Yes, he does.

No, he doesn't.

? What does Pete eat?

 

Use:

  • When we talk about a person or thing: Jessica loves surfing.

 

  • To express regular or repeated actions: Every morning he goes fishing.

 

  • To tell about our habits: After lunch I always have a coffee.

 

  • Laws of nature: Water boils on 100 Celsius.

 

  • Timetables: The next train to Budapest leaves at 5:15pm.

 

 

Some useful tips:

  • In positive sentences the verb gets -S or -ES suffix if it is in third person singular.
  • In negative sentences after does, the -S or -ES suffix is omitted.
  • We use do/does only in negative sentences and in questions.

 

Time expressions:

always, usually, never, sometimes, hardly ever, rarely, seldom, often, every day/week/month/year..., on Monday, in the           morning/afternoon/evening, at night/weekend.

 

 

Past Simple

Use:

  • Finished and completed actions in the past: Last week I worked 40 hours.

 

  • Something happened at a given time in the past: Yesterday, I finished work at 16:35.

in 2015, last night/week/month/year, yesterday, ago, when, then

 

 

Future Simple

Use:

  • Polite offers: I will help you to climb.

 

  • Future predictions: I think we won't have any problem next year.

  • Quick decisions: I will buy this t-shirt. I really like it.
