Donald

Donald woke up in his bed at Daddy's house. He looked out the window and saw the sun shining on the garden with its big tree and flowers. It was the summer holidays and he was staying with Daddy for a week.

He went to the bedroom door and walked to the kitchen where Daddy was sitting at the table eating his breakfast. "Good Morning, Donald, " Daddy smiled at him. "Sit down. I'll get your breakfast." Donald sat at the table and Daddy brought him cornflakes and toast with a cup of orange juice. "It is going to be hot today and I thought we could go to the beach. Mummy has packed your swimmers and a hat." Donald nodded his head. " Yes Daddy I love the beach."

Donald went to his room and changed into his favourite blue swimmers. Then Daddy came in and rubbed sunscreen onto Donald's face, neck, arms and legs. "It is important to put sunscreen on when you are out in the heat so you don't burn. " Daddy explained. Donald knew this. His teacher had talked about it before the holidays. It was very easy to burn on a hot day at the beach. He also knew he had to wear a hat and fetched it and put it on his head.

Donald and his Dad climbed into the car and both put on their seatbelts. Dad drove the car out of the garage and down the driveway. Donald looked out the window and saw people walking along the street. They were all wearing summer clothes and some wore hats and sunglasses. At a local cafe patrons were sitting outside, drinking cold drinks and chatting. Donald asked Daddy if they could have lunch there on the way home. "Yes, that sounds good, Donald."

Suddenly Donald saw the beach. There were sand dunes dotted with plants and blue waves which gently broke on the sandy beach. Dad parked in the car park above the beach. They climbed out and walked slowly down to the beach. It was getting really hot and Dad told Donald that the temperature would reach 35 degrees centigrade by lunch time. Donald knew that was hot. When they reached the water Dad put the beach bag down on the sand and they went into the waves. There were a lot of swimmers on the beach and Donald watched children his age and younger and older, playing in the water. When they had cooled off Dad helped him make a sand castle decorated with shells they found near the water. When they had finished Donald watched Dad swimming out through the waves. He noticed life gaurds in a tower back from the water. He knew they had placed the flags on the beach which showed the swimmers the safe place to swim.

When it was getting close to lunchtime Donald and Dad returned to the car. Dad drove to the cafe and they had chips and a cold drink for lunch. They were going to the movies in the afternoon and Donald knew it would be cool inside the picture theatre. Donald and Dad had a fun day spending time together on a very hot summer's day.
