How can I say this enough? Thank you to everyone that has kept up with all my books! You all are awesome! When I started adapting my fanfiction to these books, I was just doing it in order to introduce the Power Rangers to a new generation and to also help reluctant young readers to find a new love for reading. But I have found out that with each new book there is resounding success! Thank you all so much!
The Power Rangers and all related characters are currently owned by whoever bought them from Saban Brands. The featured song is "I'll Be" by Edwin McCain. I haven't used all the lyrics, but a good portion of them. This story is set about a month before the Lost Galaxy episode "Rangers to the Tenth Power," so I'll estimate about a year has passed since the Countdown to Destruction.
A young man climbed off the custom motorcycle, and pulled off his unique silver helmet. His face was lined with tension as he set the helmet in the crook of his arm, just like a different helmet worn long ago.
I can't believe it's already been a year…
One year since all his most daring hopes had come true. One year since the galaxy was purged of evil, finally freeing all just civilizations from the tyranny and fear that darkened their history for over ten thousand years. One year since the legendary figures of evil had all been laid to waste by Zordon's pure power, obliterating the Machine Empire, and freeing Divatox, Rita Repulsa, and Lord Zedd from the black corruption that had lured them into its clutches centuries ago. One year since his home planet was inhabited again, finally granting the survivors a place to call home after two years of nomadic hardship.
One year since he shared his first kiss with the only woman who ever made his heartbeat quicken, just by the glow of her smile, or the warmth of her laughter.
One year since he came to Earth with Karone in his arms and heart, with every intention of living out his life in peace.
It's never that easy. I should've known it couldn't be that easy…
To be fair, 'easy'
was hardly the proper term to describe his struggle against evil. In fact, it was very difficult, and very costly. He'd lost so much to the war against Dark Specter, including family, friends, and even two years of his life, forever lost within a frozen coffin of ice…
He shook himself from the chill of memory, and sat down on the park bench beside a pensive young man.
"I got your message."
Andros turned, his face neutral as he sat up straighter. "Good. Did you think about it?"
Zhane exhaled slowly, staring at his distorted reflection in his helmet's shiny surface. "Are you sure you trust your sources?"
The former Red Ranger nodded. "Without a doubt. Exploratory crews from Aquitar and Triforia have both confirmed activity in the outer edges of the galaxy. There's an evil stirring there… an evil that Zordon's energy couldn't reach."
Zhane accepted this confirmation. "And this isn't something Trey or the Aquitians could take care of?"
"Trey is now King of Triforia; he has daily responsibilities that tie him to his home system. And the Aquitians can't venture to the Outskirts safely… there's hardly any life out there, and barely any water."
Zhane couldn't refute the simple logic in his best friend's reasoning. He also couldn't ignore the conclusion his mind drifted toward. "Little life," he murmured, "Almost sounds like a Machine base."
"That's what I suspect." The Kerovan pinched the bridge of his nose. "I should never have retired so quickly. I should've explored the galaxy immediately, and driven out whatever evil hordes were still hiding in the outer pockets. By now, I'm sure the surviving monsters have had more than enough time to reconstruct deadly armies. I've let them become a threat."
Zhane grasped his friend's shoulder. "Andros, you are not
responsible for the entire galaxy. You saved KO 35 and Earth directly, and helped free Aquitar, Eltar, and Triforia as well. That's more than anyone could ever ask of one man."
The tension in Andros' face revealed his plan even before he uttered it. "Somebody's got to do something before
we have another interplanetary war on our hands. I'm going to the Outskirts, and I'm going to dig up whatever schemes are being hatched there."
"Andros, you already retired your morpher. And the Megaship."
"I know... and the Megaship has been stolen. I've kept tabs on it, though, and I also have my Kerovan flyer. If I hurry, I can catch up with the Megaship in a few weeks, and retrieve my morpher."
He then turned, looking at his friend for the first time. "Where's your
morpher?"
"I left it on KO 35," he admitted, "It's in the new museum… an artifact of the war."
Andros understood the unspoken meaning in Zhane's words. "This will be a long mission, and it'll be several years before I set foot on Earth again." He hesitated. "There's no one I trust more than you…"
Zhane felt a flash of anger at Andros' words; the Red Ranger knew
how grateful he was to finally retire the silver armor. How could he pressure Zhane to join him on another long, arduous mission?
There was so much he was looking forward to. So much he'd been anticipating, as he waited for her
to come to terms with her past, and finally accept all he offered her.
"Andros, I can't go with you." Troubled green eyes fell to his clenched fists. "I… I can't live like that anymore. Fighting for my life, wondering if each day might be my last. I died once to protect KO 35, and spent two years in a tomb… I'd like to spend the rest of my time just living
."
Andros winced visibly at Zhane's words. "I'm not asking you to join me," he said quietly, "I'm asking you to stay, and take care of Karone while I'm gone."
Zhane turned to his best friend in startled surprise. He clearly remembered Andros' discomfort with his first "date" with Astronema. Andros' fraternal instinct proved to be far keener than Zhane's own perceptions: at the time, Karone was simply not ready for a relationship.
One year had passed since that first butterfly kiss; one year of discovery for Karone, one year of caution for him. He had tread so carefully with Karone, fearing the consequences if he were too forthright with his hopes and desires. The risk was too great that he would intimidate her, doing irreparable damage to their budding relationship. What they had… those fleeting moments of true connection… was too fragile, and too precious, to risk.
A child's soul in a woman's body. He needed to let her grow accustomed to her new existence, and fully embrace her humanity. Such emotional development needed time and patience. As a result, their relationship had been tentative, casual enough to spare Karone the anxiety of deep romance, while solid enough to shine as an example of what loving someone really meant.
Their friendship had been nearly platonic, only peppered with fleeting glances or chaste kisses. When would she be ready for more? Was she truly interested in something different?
The silence seemed to stretch on for hours, before Zhane finally spoke. "I love her, you know."
A hesitation before answering. "I know."
"At first, I was just attracted to her. There was just this… this light inside her that made her beautiful. But now, I know her. And I really love her."
Andros grinned faintly. "I know… and that's why I can trust you. I know you'll give her what she needs; whether it's a relationship, or space."
Zhane stared, thunderstruck, as Andros rose to his feet. "I have to prepare for the mission. I'll really miss you, Zhane."
The former Silver Ranger stood, and the best friends exchanged their lifelong handshake.
"Did you already tell Karone?" Zhane wondered.
Andros' lips tightened. "She didn't take the news well."
Zhane nodded his understanding. "She's got a temper," he admitted. "I'll go see her. I think I need to talk to her."
And with those parting words, Zhane bid his farewell… his mind fertile with possibilities as he rode into Angel Grove.
Tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I'll be captivated
I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above
She was angry. She was desperate. She was confused. She was despondent. She was ashamed. All at once.
Karone had quickly figured out one of the most crippling facets of human emotions. They could so easily build upon each other, creating a conflicting storm of too much feeling that was utterly overwhelming, exhausting, and irrational.
"I have to leave, Karone. I have to stop them!"
endanger your life like this. You were once the Princess of Evil… you have no idea how eager any remaining monsters would be to kill you for betraying them. I can't bring you, and worry that I'll lose you again!"
Any reasonable mind would have listened to Andros' explanation and found truth in it. Any reasonable mind would have understood how a former Power Ranger could be called back to action to preserve the peace that long years of battle had finally achieved.
Why couldn't she be reasonable?
As he spoke, her anger flared like a volcano preparing to erupt. She shouted at him, demanding that he take her with him.
"I can't… I won't
She didn't hear the sense in his words, or the deep fear in his voice. She only heard his adamant refusal, and responded on instinct. She began to cry.
"You… you're abandoning me!"
behave like this!
Her words stabbed him; she knew they did. He grimaced as if she had kicked him in the gut, and stood frozen as Karone rushed to her bedroom.
When she finally emerged, he was gone.
Hurt, fear, bitterness, sorrow, humiliation… they all inundated her. She could hardly breathe, much less rein in these runaway feelings and make sense to herself.
She had acted like a petulant brat, throwing a meaningless temper tantrum.
I won't
So she concentrated, and forced the ocean of thrashing feelings to simply… freeze.
A technique she had learned as a child. A way to block out the weakness of her flesh, and function without the illogical distraction of her soft heart.
It took over an hour of intense concentration and discipline… and when she opened her eyes again, she reveled in the serenity of feeling nothing at all.
Moments after she emerged from her trance, a soft knock drew her attention. "Yes?"
The door to her bedroom slowly inched open, and Zhane's apprehensive face appeared, "I hope I didn't wake you," he murmured, stepping inside, "I rang the doorbell, and when no one answered, I let myself in."
She stood up from her bed, and offered a smile. "It's good to see you."
Zhane moved toward her, pressing his lips to her cheek in a greeting kiss. Only, as his soft green eyes locked with her frigid gaze, he withdrew abruptly.
"Karone, don't do this."
She quirked her eyebrow. "What?"
"Turn your feelings... off!" He took a deep breath, forcibly modulating his voice. It was a battle both he and Andros fought time and again. Whenever the feelings were too painful… too deep… she retreated.
"I have to deal with my emotions," she retorted, "That's what humans do. They don't just… lash out."
"Karone, you're not dealing
with anything! You need to explore your feelings, and understand them. That's the only way you can cope with them properly."
Her lip began to tremble. She could feel that psychological ice melting at his impassioned words. "I… I can't," she muttered, her voice soft. "I hurt Andros today. I can't let my feelings hurt my family."
Zhane stepped closer to her, taking her hands into his strong yet gentle grasp. "Karone, I know you're upset with Andros. He told me all about it, and about his leaving. It's only natural that you're hurting now. You know you're going to miss him, and it's healthy for you to feel that loss."
He squeezed her hands, his smile lighting up the room. "If you don't mind, I'd really like to talk about your feelings. Maybe it'll help you get a grip on them?"
She gazed at him, wonder slowing her senses as she lost herself in that dazzling smile. How did he do it? What kind of magic did he possess, that unfailingly tore down whatever defenses she had erected? No one, not even her own brother, could simply look into her eyes and see everything that was on her mind and in her heart. No one else could reach her so easily.
Her eyes began to itch again, and her jaw dropped in horror as all composure was lost. She pulled away from Zhane, humiliation flushing her cheeks, yet he did not release his insistent grip.
"There's nothing wrong with tears," he murmured, his smile softening. He released one hand, and slowly ran his fingers along her cheek, catching the drops of feeling. "Andros' tears woke you after the Countdown. Tears relieve our souls… and Kerovans don't hold them in."
With those simple, sincere reassurances, Zhane shattered the dam. The tears collected quickly, reddening those cool blue eyes and blurring her view of his heart-stealing grin.
She shivered under the weight of her misery. He felt her tremble, and inched closer to her, urging her forehead to rest against his shoulder. It took less than a second for her to crumble into his embrace, her arms wrapping around him as if he were a raft in a tempest-tossed sea.
I'll be your crying shoulder
I'll be love suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life
She wept until she was completely spent of anger, frustration, sadness, and guilt. Zhane held her close the entire time, his soothing embrace telling the troubled young woman all she needed to know.
Once she regained some semblance of composure, Karone pulled away from him, her hands tracing the water stain on his shoulder. "I think I ruined your shirt."
Zhane grinned as he inspected the cotton. "It's wash and wear; I think it'll survive. Still," he pulled the soaked shirt over his head, leaving him in the thin undershirt beneath it, "Here, you keep it."
He tossed it at her. Battle honed reflexes let her catch the balled-up garment easily. She wiped her moist cheeks with it, absently inhaling.
It smells like him…
"Let's get something to drink," he decided, taking her hand, "I'm sure all those waterworks left you dehydrated."
A little moue tightened her lips as she theatrically swatted him with his own shirt.
Had anyone else made such a comment, she would've been utterly mortified or direly insulted. Yet, the laughter in Zhane's eyes dispelled any offense before it could even form. He was teasing her, trying to draw her out of her darker thoughts.
Zhane was lighthearted by nature, but never dismissive of her feelings. Perhaps it was that sensitivity to her various psychoses that made it so easy to smile for him.
He led her into the common room, letting her take a seat on the couch as he perused the contents of the refrigerator in the kitchenette. Moments later he returned, setting a glass of ice water before her while pulling open a can of soda. Neither she nor Andros liked the carbonated Earth beverage, yet they always kept several cans of it for Zhane. He couldn't get his fill of the syrupy sweet concoction.
She felt his eyes on her as she took a long sip of the cool water. Oddly enough, his patient attention compelled her to get to the heart of the matter. "Andros is leaving me."
"Andros has to leave," he finally said. "He's decided that his mission isn't over, and he has reason to be worried: if there is an evil remnant left in the galaxy, it's only a matter of time before they strike. It's better to take the initiative now than wait to be targeted."
Karone stared into the clear ripples of her glass. "I know that... and it should
make it easier for me to accept. But for some reason, the 'why'
doesn't matter. He's leaving me, and I know I won't see him again for months... at least
. And I'm..."
Her lips refused to allow that humiliating admission to escape. Despite all that had changed in the past year, the stubborn pride of the Princess of Evil refused to evaporate.
Not surprisingly, Zhane heard the word she didn't say. "We're both scared."
Karone eyed him skeptically.
"I mean it," he assured her, "I'm scared, too. It's been a long time since my life has been... stable. Comfortable. I haven't had security since the day Dark Specter first attacked KO 35."
She flinched at the reference to the beginning of the end of KO 35. Though she was removed from the battle for her home world, she still served in the army of the creature that devastated that peaceful planet.
His hand encircled hers, offering a squeeze of encouragement before he continued. Out of consideration for her discomfort, he didn't linger on the details of the long, painful war. "The three of us built a new life here on Earth. We all lost so much, but we still had each other. I lost my parents, but I found a new family: you and Andros. And now one piece of that family is leaving... and it hurts knowing that things are changing again."
He let go of her hand, leaning away from her and taking another sip of his soda. Karone chewed her lip, ruminating over everything Zhane had told her.
I could never admit all that. And yet... it's what I'm feeling, too.
"It's okay to be scared, and it's okay to be angry. But it does help to remember that Andros loves you, and wants to protect you. That's part of the reason he feels the need to serve."
"But, we don't have to separate
," she maintained, "We could all go to the Outskirts! The three of us! Then I wouldn't worry about him, because I'd see that he's okay, and I could even help! After all the lives I took, it's only right for me to try and make amends..."
This too was a path often trod. The guilt over her deeds as Astronema surged every now and then, often infusing her with an extra dose of stubbornness.
"This isn't your fight, Karone," he stated.
Her eyes darkened. "Why? Is it because I'm not a Ranger?"
His steady gaze diffused her anger. "It's not your fight, just like it's not mine."
Karone stared at his familiar face, curious at the strange intensity she sensed in him. "Why aren't you going with him?" she wondered, "He's your best friend. How can you let him face this new threat alone?"
She hadn't meant her question to sound accusatory, but Zhane looked away, as if struggling with that question himself. "Andros knows what he's doing, so I'm not worried about him. And…" He swallowed. "..my fight is finally over, Karone. I won't pick up my morpher again."
Ghosts of loss and pain hovered in those emerald green depths. Zhane rarely even hinted at all he had endured in his life, but Karone knew the highlights of his story. She knew of the family he lost, of the injuries he sustained... of the two years he'd spent in dreamless recovery.
Her heart ached for him as he silently revisited that pain. Moved by an emotion that startled her with its strength, she leaned closer to him, draping her arms over his shoulders in a gentle hug.
You're my survival,
You're my living proof
My love is alive and not dead
It was the way Zhane himself had taught her to give and receive comfort. Leaning against each other to help anchor them in the whirling winds of life and loss.
Karone was speechless as her hand traced the muscle of his shoulder through his thin shirt. How often did Zhane's losses weigh him down? He tried so valiantly to serve as her rock... how hard had he tried to block out his own pain and frustrations?
Seeing even this small glimpse of Zhane's anguish sent a quiver through her that was uniquely different from the turmoil her brother's announcement had created.
Puzzled, she sought a name for this unfamiliar feeling. This isn't guilt... I didn't cause Zhane's pain, so I don't regret my part in it. Could this be empathy? I'm reacting to his pain, and I wish I could put an end to it. Not for my sake, but for his... because I hate seeing him like this, no matter the reason.
The hug she offered seemed hopelessly inadequate, considering what had darkened Zhane's disposition. And yet, against all logic, the simple hugs she received from him had truly eased her own darker moods.
It struck her at that moment how alike they were. True, she could never hope to match his sterling optimism, and he could never fathom how it had been to grow up in Dark Specter's court. In turn, she couldn't relate to his life as a hero, loved and respected by the whole of KO 35. Still, they both had "died" to one life: she had been freed from the consuming darkness of Evil, and he had willingly taken a deathblow meant for Andros. They both awoke to a new world, in which they no longer fit.
We understand each other. It's like we're on the same wavelength.
They both yearned for healing. For a restoration of a simple, normal
life, without the threat of dark magic or evil creatures looming over the horizon. They both yearned to turn their backs on the hardship of their lives, and find peace, and security.
Had it really been over a year ago, when they'd first met? When he saved her life from the wolf creature she'd created, and cared for her injuries despite the fact that she was his enemy? That single act of kindness triggered something deep within her... a curiosity that made her embark on a path of self-discovery that ultimately led her to choose her brother over Dark Specter.
There in the Dark Fortress, she'd spent many a night wondering why he'd bothered to rescue her. Wondering why he was so kind to her. Wondering how he'd been able to affect the atrophied heart that beat in the breast of Astronema.
And at that moment, leaning so near the man who dealt the Princess of Evil's most poignant defeat in that secluded park in Angel Grove, Karone finally understood what he had done to her... both in their first meeting, and in the myriad of casual moments that he was there
for her.
I've been dropped out, burned up,
Fought my way back from the dead
Tuned in, turned on,
Remembered the things that you said
It's love.
Her lungs inflated as she gasped in surprise. This is what love is. Right here, in this moment... in all the moments we've shared, just like this. I thought love was complicated and inexplicable… but it's not. It's not !
It seemed that a light was switched on in her heart. The emotion that had perplexed her so much during the past year was suddenly crystal clear.
Love was forgiving and selfless. Love was hopeful, even against terrible odds. Love was enduring, and was a salve for all wounds. Love was a lens through which the entire world seemed brighter. And love was in all the smiles and hugs from all the Space Rangers. Love was in the gentle grins of her brother.
Love was in Zhane's luminous eyes. Love was in his inviting embrace. Love was in his sunny smile. And that love caused something to shine deep within her.
Love was what made his eyes so entrancing. Love was what made his arms so inviting. Love was what made his smile so captivating. Love was what gave him the power to shine like a beacon whenever she hid within the shadows of her mind.
Her heart pounding with the enormity of her revelation, her lips trembled as she breathed three words, so quietly Zhane couldn't even hear her. Yet, he felt the sudden wave of feeling that had shaken her to the depths of her soul. His eyes wide with new concern, he gave her his full attention. "Karone?"
"I… love you," she murmured.
He stared at her blankly, not daring to believe what he thought
he'd heard. "What?"
"I love you," she spoke again, with such conviction that she startled even herself. And she leaned closer to him, and acted on an impulse that had stirred her imagination many times before.
She kissed him.
Only this was not the fleeting touch of their first kiss, set against the endless stars of outer space. This time, there was a desperate need… a need to convey more than words ever could, a need to be open and honest with all the feelings that coursed through her.
He leaned into the kiss with equal fervor, his mind whirling as if intoxicated by the feel of her lips and the warmth of her body so near.
The moment stretched into eternity for them both, as if they actually felt the world around them slip away. Finally, the need for oxygen forced them to part, though they did not separate completely. The need for skin to skin contact was overwhelming, so their foreheads touched, each one quietly gasping in breath.
Finally, Karone found her voice. "What... does this mean?" she murmured. In many ways, her voice sounded like the lost child Zhane often saw in her eyes.
He grinned indulgently, hazy warmth dulling his senses. Without hesitation, he brushed his fingers through her fine hair. "It means I love you too."
Her smile gleamed like the brightest of stars. Of course, she knew what he felt for her... but even that knowledge couldn't prepare her for the elation that lifted her heart at hearing the words.
"And, what happens now?"
He leaned back from her, meeting her eyes evenly. "To be perfectly honest... I don't really know."
She blinked in surprise.
His response was a sheepish grin. "I've never been in love before. This is new territory for the both of us."
She should have been scared... or at least intimidated by the thought of traversing new territory without a guide. Yet for some reason, the concept excited her. Now, she and Zhane could share something uniquely their own, and learn from each other. For the first time, they were on even ground.
Karone took a slow breath, letting her mind wander over the jarring upheaval she'd experienced in one day. She was losing her brother, who was leaving her in the pursuit of evil. Yet she wouldn't be alone. Now, she felt closer to Zhane than ever before. And in that warm green gaze, she found promises she'd never expected to find. Promises of something special that would only grow with time.
And faintly, she wondered why it took her so long to realize just how much Zhane meant to her.
I'll be your crying shoulder
I'll be love suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life
The greatest fan of your life...

Bulk and Skull are now assistants to Professor Phenomenus, reluctantly following his foolish plans to find aliens on Earth. When the Prof. went off in space on Terra Venture, only Bulk followed, with Skull remaining on Earth.
Professor Phenomenus

, where he took a job at the Comet Cafe.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The Turtles were turned evil and teleported from New York by Astronema to infiltrate the Astro Megaship and take control of it to destroy the Power Rangers. They were broken free of the spell, and helped the Rangers take on the Quantrons.
Phantom Ranger
The Phantom Ranger has once again reappeared into the adventures of the Power Rangers, this time revealing himself to be searching for Zordon on his own throughout the galaxy. In his first encounter with the new team, he gave Andros the Delta Megaship.
Justin - Blue Turbo Ranger
When the Rangers were captured, Storm Blaster left and came back with Justin, reuniting him with his Turbo Morpher. Justin freed the others as the Blue Turbo Ranger, and later returned to his normal life with his dad.
Adam - Black Power Ranger
The former Black Ranger reappeared to help Carlos through a rough time. When a monster attacked a powerless Carlos, Adam risked his life by morphing without a Power Coin and holding off the monster until the rest of the team arrived.
Adele
Adele runs the Surf Spot, an Angel Grove eating establishment where the Rangers hang out when they aren't on duty. Her tough love teaches customers valuable lessons in life.
Karone
Karone is Andros' sister, formerly known as Astronema. She was kidnapped by Darkonda years ago on KO-35, and raised by Ecliptor to be evil. When she discovered her true heritage, she joined Andros' side. Karone later joined the Galaxy Rangers as the Pink Ranger.
Astronema and her forces operated from the Dark Fortress, which was armed with satellasers to make monsters grow. The Dark Fortress was last seen on Earth, after being commandeered by Red Space Ranger Andros.
Astronema
Among the new faces at the summit is Astronema, a stylish vixen who commands an army of robots called Quantrons, and pilots the Dark Fortress. Astronema was revealed to be Andros' long lost sister Karone. When she discovered this, she joined her brother on the side of good.
Dark Specter
The mastermind behind it all- Dark Specter has managed to attack Eltare and successfully abduct the wizard Zordon, who's powers he plans to drain and use for his own evil agenda. Before completing his agenda, he was destroyed by the treacherous Darkonda, who used a missile meant for Earth.
Ecliptor
Ecliptor is Astronema's ruthless and powerful warrior. His expert swordfighting skill and tremendous firepower make him one of the Rangers most dangerous villains. He helped the Rangers when Astronema joined their side, but was turned evil again by Dark Specter, only to be destroyed by Zordon's energy.
Darkonda
This treacherous bounty hunter assisted Astronema in battling the Rangers, but only to serve his own agenda. Andros discovered that it was Darkonda who kidnapped his sister from KO-35 years ago. Darkonda died after attacking Dark Specter, who killed him just before going down himself.
Elgar
This obnoxious and dim witted goon was transferred by Dark Specter from Divatox's command to work with Astronema, much to her chagrin. He was destroyed by Zordon's wave.
Psycho Rangers
Astronema created the Psycho Rangers, insane machines with insatiable lusts to destroy their heroic counterparts. The Psycho Rangers each read their respective Ranger's mind to be able to read their moves, making them nearly impossible to defeat. Using a special machine, the Psychos were digitzed and stored on data cards, which would later be recovered in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy
.
Quantrons
The Quantrons are Astronema's robotic soldiers who attack with enormous bladed weapons.
Velocifighters
The Quantrons pilot Velocifighters, which can fly through space and shoot energy blasts.
