Chapter 1

She knew it was a dream, but it felt so real. Often Kate's dreams started with her falling or spinning in her car. Her car accident was four years ago. Kate was driving home from work on the same route she took daily. It was June17. The sky was clear, blue, and very warm. That day was unusual, because a train was crossing the tracks two miles from home. Kate's car was stopped; the fourth car back from the crossing.

Kate remembers the pain well. She remembers the face of the young black man who hit her from behind at 40 mph. She won't ever forget his name. Jason. He fell asleep at the wheel; waking up to the initial crash of hitting Kate. Trying to correct, Jason steered his white sudan, which now scraped up the driver's side of Kate's car. As her car hit the one in front of her, Jason's car passed the driver's window where Kate's arm was resting.

The scream woke Kate out of her dream. Sometimes the dream was a nightmare. Other times, the dream was a bit happier; one where she had both arms after wards. The accident was something her therapist, Judy, said she would eventually shake, but it would never be something she would forget. So far, Judy was a bit off. Kate felt there was little progress, other than being able to get out of bed and pretend like she was a normal human being.

While at times Kate felt like botany was playing with what God created, it was fulfilling to extend the possibility of what plants could offer.

After the accident, Kate took an extended leave
