The crumpled leaves fluttered as the bikes raced into college campus, pedestrians gave way to the race bikes, gangs met and high fived at the grounds greeting each of their friends. Fresher’s walked in a little bit nervous of their new college. Girls and boys chattered the latest gossip as the college buses arrived and the other students filed in.
Some people are enthu about the New Year and others looked forward to finish the year soon and leave the burden of education behind. Fresher’s are being called upon by the seniors and are being ragged by them. Everywhere around the excitement was lively.
“Hey, what are you staring at?” One of them snapped his friend. He pointed at a girl coming towards them not just some girl but the most beautiful girl.
Her skin shone as the teeny rays of sun touched her, tiny gusts of wind played with her free hair, dimples added beauty to her rosy cheeks, big and deep brown eyes that seemed to draw any person looking at her. Her perfect features are just an asset to her well figured body. Her vanilla scent lingered in the air as she passed by.
“Do you know a person named Shaan?” she spoke to a passerby.
He just shrugged his shoulders, “I’m a fresher, I think you should ask one of the seniors.” He replied. She nodded.
She asked a group of girls chattering in the ground. “Shaan? What do you want with him? I suppose you are not his new girl friend, right?” one of the tallest girls asked roughly. She sighed and continued her way.
One of the rough looking guys stopped her on the way. “Don’t you wish your seniors?” he sneered. He checked her and she felt uncomfortable and slipped away from him saying that she is not a fresher.
“I never saw you here.” He stopped her. “Dude, leave her alone.” One of the boys said coming his way.
“What makes you think that I’ll do what you said?”He sneered. “She is here for Shaan.” He replied grimly. Immediately, he gave her way.
“Come, I’ll take you to him.” he said. “I’m Rajiv.” He said extending her hands. Before she could introduce herself Rajiv led her into the basketball court.
Rajiv called Shaan but everyone was immersed in the match. “I can wait, let them finish the game.” She replied.
Both teams played well but one of the person in the winner team seemed to be scoring very well, the PET whistled to break up as the time finished and it’s time for classes. She sighed thinking that she really wanted to know who the winner is.
Rajiv raised his voice once again to call and the person who did well in the game turned to face them for the first time.
“Shaan, she is here to see you.” He said, he turned towards her dubiously. “I didn’t know your name.” he said. Shaan slapped on his head “Doesn’t matter you always forget everything.” he smiled.
“Shaan…”he extended his hands towards the girl. “Anvi…” she replied without shaking his hands. He raised his brow thinking that she has some attitude.
“Tanya wanted to give this letter to you; she is grounded by her parents.” She said curtly.
She walked away not even turning back. Shaan stared at her as she left. Shaan is the heart throb of the girls here, he is smart, handsome and most of all a famous athlete. He was never shown attitude by any girl, they just wanted to be with her.
Anvi was having a hard time sleeping, she watched a horror movie late at night, she knew it wasn’t right but she had so much wanted to see the ending and when she watched the ending, she couldn’t take her mind away from the gore scenes. She feared that someone would come creeping under her bed and slit her throat away. She tried to imagine romantic scenes from another movie she recently watched, in vain.
At last her eyelids began to drop heavily and she adjusted her pillows to sleep, when she heard a faint noise outside her room. She pulled her bed covers closer and began to tremble, she peeped at the glass doors. A shadow flickered on the walls, she rubbed her eyes and saw again. There stood a man with a knife in one hand and a box like thing in the other hand, She began to imagine herself being killed brutally as the murderer killed the girl.
She closed her eyes in fear began to gather every ounce of strength to shriek for the gaurds around her house and before she could open her lips. Two strong hands closed her mouth, she began to kick and scream in a muffled voice.
“Anvi…” came a sweet and tender voice. She began to calm down as she realized his voice.
“I would have died of heart attack…” she complained as he released her from his grip. “I told you not to watch the movie…” he complained.
“Yeah!” she shrugged her shoulders. “Is this the way to come, you freak…”she screamed slapping him. He hushed her placing his finger on her mouth. “What?” she mouthed.
He took her to the balcony and sat her on the chair and asked her to close her eyes. “Now what…?” she started. He hushed her and asked her to open her eyes a little while later. There is a cake set on the table and on it written “Happy birthday Anvi” and infact the knife he carried was for cutting the cake. She laughed at her foolishness merrily, he looked dubiously at her. She hugged him and thanked him.
“I love you… Shaan” she cried happily as the tears slipped through her eyes. He wiped them away whispering “I love you too…”
They sat on her bed holding hands and thinking about how they got together. After she delivered that letter Tanya, a cousin of Shaan… Shaan sought help of Anvi to marry her cousin to the one she loved. Anvi brought Tanya out from her house and helped her to get married in a register office. Anvi and Shaan became good friends in the process and their friendship blossomed into love soon enough.
“I should probably go, the sun will rise in a few moments.” He said unwilling to move from her side. She nodded hesistantly.
He jumped and slid through the gates unnoticed. She slept happily for a while dreaming about her life with him.
“Your father…” the maid who attends to Anvi entered in.
“Hi,dad.” “Happy birthday, darling.” He greeted her with a hug. “Here’s your birthday present.” He said pointing to a handsome, well dressed guy. She frowned.
“He is the chairman of Singhania industries… yes.. he is the son of your uncle. We have decided that you two should marry…” Anvi’s world crashed around her. “Dad… I have something to tell you… In private…” she stammered.
He walked into the library clearly irritated by her daughter’s behavior. “Dad… I love someone else.” She said tentatively.
He glared at her but seeing her daughters crying face, he slumped on to the couch and spoke in barely audible voice. “Who is he?” he asked.
“Shaan…” she whispered. “Shaan… who?” he asked again. “He is my college friend.” She said. “What does his father do?” “His father is a government employee…”
“Anvi… do you know how much you own? You’re the daughter of millionarie and I expect you to live up to that standard.” Her father replied grimly.
“Now… I don’t want any disturbance. Behave nicely with your fiancee.”
Anvi blinked back her tears and determined to give it another try when her so called fiancee went away. She waited patiently trying to be as polite as she could to him until he was gone. “Dad…” she called when his father started to his room.
“Anvi… there is nothing to talk. I don’t expect my daughter to marry a good for nothing person.” He replied sternly.
She went flying to her, crying, she called Shaan and said everything that happened. He consoled her and promised to come at night to take her away.
Anvi packed all her belongings and waited patiently for Shaan, When her father peeped in to see what she was doing, she pretended to be sleeping. As promised Shaan came to take her away, he threw her luggage first and then assisted her to climb down. Anvi could feel her pulse beating harder, she knew she is doing wrong but she can’t imagine her life without Shaan.
They got down and began to creep before anyone noticing…They were few inches from the gate when the lights in the house flickered on. They started running at once but too late. One of the gaurds caught Anvi and the other Shaan.
Anvi’s father walked in his night robe and started dragging her away into the house. She tried to pry his hands away from him. He was furious and that made his grip even more strong. He pushed her into her room and locked her door, she ran to see Shaan who is kicked by the gaurds. He lay unconscious on the floor, blod dripping from his face, he is covered in blood. The gaurds kicked in his ribs though they knew he was unconscious.
After a few minutes, police came in. The gaurds gave a false statement saying that he was caught while stealing huge amount of money from the house. The police man took him away and Anvi fell crying on the floor. She woke up with sore eyes when she heard the creaking of a door.
“Are you awake.” Her father asked. She sniffled. “I wanted you to be happy… you don’t know what you are doing. In your age love seems to be perfect and you feel like love is just sufficient for you but as time passes by you will realise that mere love is not sufficient to lead life. You will thank me one day for doing this to you.” He added.
“Why is it you weren’t happy anyday? Why is it I see you gloomy always? Because you miss mom though you have everything, you still miss mom and her love…” she said in muffled cries.
Her father stared at her for a while but shook his head in disbelief. He sighed and left. After a few seconds Anvi heard him speaking to police, “Use all your power to keep him in prison. I’ll give you huge amounts if you do that favor to me.”
Anvi couldn’t believe that it was his father speaking like that. She can’t risk Shaan’s life for her love, if she does then she’ll be selfish. She wiped away her tears and walked into her father’s room determined.
“Dad, I’ll marry whoever you choose…” her father’s face lit with joy. “but… you have to promise that you’ll leave Shaan alone.”
“Call him and ask him to leave him.” She ordered. “I’ll when your marriage is over.” He said.
She tried to protest but he looked deteremined. She went into her room. All these years, she is been waiting for her perfect match and when she found one, the cruel fate stole him away from her in the name of financial barriers.
She did only thing she could, she called her friends for help. Hoping, they would do something. She cried into sleep.
In the police station, students walked in with a lawyer. They brought him bail and informed him of Anvi’s wedding. Anvi and Shaan both being majors lawyer helped them to file a case and the police having nothing to do went to stop the wedding.
Shaan felt happy thinking everything is going the way he had planned and in a few seconds she will be his wife. He hadn’t expected that his life would turn upside down. When he reached her house, he saw many people gathered. He pushed them aside and ran to his Anvi. He was stunned when he saw his Anvi lying on the ground in bloodshed. He went to her and tried wake her up but she didn’t budge.
When Anvi called her friends, she was hopeful that they would help her but when her father overheard her calling her friends. She went storming into his room and called the police men and offered him a huge sum if he killed Shaan. Anvi begged him not to do so… but he brushed her away.
She couldn’t do anything to stop the brutality but she could stop herself from seeing and hearing about his death. She did the only thing that came to her mind at that instant, leaving him alone.
Shaan cried over her, she should have waited a few more hours patiently then they would have happily united. Why should she do this when everything is going to be alright? Perhaps, they were never meant to be together. Perhaps the god, doesn’t want them to stay together. Shaan wailed but he was determined to show the god that not even death could separate them.
