THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CHARACTER EDUCATION PROGRAM

 

In a corrupt ridden society as ours and in such a time where globalization fosters both good and bad values, the need for maximum emphasis on character development in our schools has become a supreme task.

This material is drawn out of a deep understanding that self awareness literatures are the most effective dimensions to character and leadership values development amongst teenagers and its inspired to help schools at all levels harmonize and integrate the essential values of sound moral and character principles into the educational curriculum of our students and citizens.

 

No doubt by now, we all must have fully comprehend the fact that our learning curriculum through the three tiers of the education process – Primary, secondary and tertiary – is 90% skill and management oriented with little or no emphasis on the prime value of the human nature – Character. This costly mistake we all are paying for by the lashes and torment of surviving in a corrupt society like ours and the wishful desires of a society driven by leadership values, is the rooted in the neglect and subordination of character knowledge to skill and management knowledge and anyone will agree with me, that this penalty is very expensive for Africans – the margin between our world and the western world validates this fact.

 

Character – undoubtedly – the most significant of the human nature, because of its capacity to develop the mind – have been subordinated to personal thrust and parental empowerment. Education – the most effective of our human learning sources have been ignorantly or consciously deprived of this aspect of human development thereby making skill, management and corruption the basic value to hang on to for survival.

 

Character education curriculum seeks to bridge this gap by creating the understanding of the ethics and dynamics involved in the human thought process, value systems, actions and reactionary processes, character and leadership development so as to create the individual capacities for effective personal judgment, choices and decisions as well as self awareness and many more knowledge common within our circle but illusionary and mythical to most of us.

“Corruption is the predominant character in our society, but corruption itself is negative character that can effectively be overcome by the integration of character education into the learning/scripting programs of our society”

Character education basically exposes the hidden truth that reveals corruption as the opposite of character because “a society or an individual that sees character as a lesser value will inevitably experience corruption as its dominant value.” This material grants the idea that can effectively help us draw the line between management and leadership in our individual lives so that leadership becomes as tangible and effective as management is to us in our business space through the leadership by character dimension of learning which this material promotes. It is recommended for every student and young mind.

 

With the knowledge of character education fully integrated into the main fabrics of our academic curriculum, students are empowered to interpret weaknesses and strength rightly in terms of their individual perception which ultimately informs their judgment, choices and decisions – which of cause are the basis for what their life will turn out to be tomorrow. By character education, the higher reaches of self realization and awareness as well as self motivation becomes a function of their learning program and process; students are not just intellectuals, but character oriented in their ways and approach to life; they become self driven – no longer going to school to fulfil social demands and expectations, but to consciously become learner driven and ultimately to gain an educated mind, become innovative and productive and this is so important to the development of our children.

 

The society is ridden by thousands, millions even, of parents with little or no character value when carrying on with their daily life and affairs outside their homes and on the streets. They quarrel, cheat, fight, condemn, pretend and exhibits all sort of attitude that clearly point to the lack of character consciousness. It will be illusionary to think these parents have what it takes to imbibe character consciousness and values on their wards. Remember, advises, home ethics and social cultures of moral significance should not be mistaken for character empowerment. Parents can’t teach character to their children because character knowledge is essentially psychological and individualistic in terms of learning.

 

To gain character knowledge, a child has to be taught the ethics and dynamics of his or her personal effectiveness to engender the self-awareness necessary for change, self-management and self-leadership and this is far deeper than the impact of surface advices and guidance.

 

An introduction to character development education serves as the first wholly right brain functional knowledge program that develops the mind of students within the academic environment. The mind is rooted in the right hemisphere of the human brain, while of cause our skill and management academic programs remains the left brain functional programs developing our intellect, rooted in our left brain hemisphere; thereby creating a balanced knowledge development program for our students in the cause of their learning process and also upgrading our society from one of a left brain intellectually dominant society driven by corrupt values to one where character values are inherently personal, collectively upheld and allowed to precipitate as the dominant value.

 

Although philosophical, this material is well articulated, simplified and communicated for the understanding of all levels of students and teachers across the African continent. Government, educational ministries and Schools are advised to adopt and fully integrate into their academic curriculum the character education materials so as to bridge the gap between effective quality education and the social drive for certificates of management and skill. Parents are advice to ensure this material in all of its volumes are part of their children’s learning resources because they would come to know themselves in a deeper more meaningful way.

 

Iwobe Kingsley is a character educationist; he believes that character can and should be taught as part of the comprehensive academic curriculum and not left to parental admonishment and advices. He is a student of the Steven R. Covey character & leadership school of thought and a firm advocate of the leadership by character dimension of empowering people to become leaders of themselves and others and also an advocate of the idea that quality education isn’t a function of cut-throat school fees, ultra-modern learning facilities and the exposure many parents wish for their children; but a function of the extent to which character education is integrated into the learning and academic curriculums of the students. He has taught the concepts of leadership from the character paradigm in several schools and to hundreds of students and adults, helping them understand the ethics and dynamics of individual effectiveness and actively seeks to see that it becomes part of our learning resources in his life time.

The Character education was inspired to bring development to the mind at an early age. A developed mind is a mind that understands and values the elements of character over corruption and is able to make at all times, effective personal judgment, choices and decisions. The mind is resided in the right brain and its development is a function of character knowledge while the intellect is resided in the left brain and its development is a function of any skill and management knowledge.

Synopsis: Character education though neglected or unknown is a vital academic curriculum that empowers us with the knowledge required build and develop the mind and its basic focus is on character development and effectiveness. It expresses all of its ideas through the knowledge of the ethics and dynamics of human effectiveness thereby helping students come to terms with how they can consistently make effective personal judgment, choices and decisions because their future or tomorrows life’s result is 100% a function of these three dimensions in which we relate with our world.  

 

What is Character?

 

There are a variety of definitions that can be used to illustrate the essence of character as it concerns us. But we must be careful not to be caught in the usual – but meaningless consciousness – we have always adopted when we talk about character.

 

In defining character, we must be thorough about certain criteria’s and dimensions which are basic features of the human character and they include but not necessarily limited to:

 

1. The need to consciously develop it.
2. Based on our appreciation of sound principles of life.
3. They are the strength of a man.
4. It stands in stark contrast to the word corruption.
5. It is the most profound element of leadership, vision and general human success.
6. It is a function of moral values and humane ethics.

 

Now let us define character:

 

Character is the strength of a man which he must develop in other to meet demands and challenges life unfolds before him daily; as well as achieve set personal and interpersonal goals and visions; keep healthy relationships; take responsibility for results, actions and inactions; influence others positively; uphold moral values and most of all subvert corrupt mentality and practices all by effectively leading a principled life.

 

Character is that innate strength that must be developed to meet the demands that life places on each and everyone of us. A shocking revelation could be the understand that: character is the opposite of corruption; they stand in stark contrast to one another in our lives.
