CHAPTER ONE

 THE TRIP

“Mgbuwee,” she did it again. It was the third time she was throwing up into her bag. I felt like doing likewise, watching her empty the content of her stomach into a black cellophane bag.

It was a long ride from “Treasure Base of the Nation.” With an hour thirty minutes gone we still had two hours or more to get to “People’s Paradise.” The puking girl was seated next to me in a bus. She sat close to a window on the third row, while I was sandwiched in-between her and a huge guy.

She was pretty – the prettiest teen I had seen in a long while. Her light skin glowed beneath the reflection of the sun through the bus window. Her low cut hair was dark and thick like a horse tail, and shone under the sunlight as her head trotted from left to right under the influence of a gallop ride. Her eyes were bright and beamed like white fluorescent bulbs, and her lips resembled a watermelon. She wore a sleeveless crop top that showed off her cleavage and her indented belly button. She was a sweet sixteen, most likely a virgin like her afro-textured hair. She had an “I’ve-never-had-a-boyfriend” kind of a face, and it had no make-up on it. Her cheeks had natural blush but her face held no smile.

Co-passengers minded their business even when they noticed someone was nauseating. So I was left to play the role of a Good Samaritan to the young girl as though she was the battered Jew. Only, she had no injuries; just an unsettled stomach that was angry due to numerous bumps on the highway.

I would have rubbed her tummy and spoken comforting words to it, but that would have been too much trespass from a stranger. I offered my handkerchief to clean off puke remnants from her lips and resorted to rubbing her back to ease her distress and prevent her from further vomiting.

“Oga driver, I will drop at the third junction when you reach. The one that has two roads,” she said.

“E for better say you sabi the name of the place o because I no know the third junction.” The driver had replied without turning
