Pa says that Uncle Wooster is the laziest man in Muddy Fork County. Wooster is Mammy's brother, the only one she has, and he just bums around. Pa says Wooster is scared of work, like a man would be of a copperhead snake. He often helps us in the cornfields in the summer, but it just about kills his soul. When it comes wintertime, he always manages to get put in jail.
Pa says he feeds off the County at the expense of us corn-growing tax payers, and when spring comes around, after he has served his six month sentence, he comes back to our place to stay and helps us with the corn crops in the summer.
Pa doesn't pay him a dime. He figures that his eating at our table and having a place to sleep in the barn is payment enough. Our shack is small, with just two rooms. With
