What is Love?
Love is a simple, yet complex term. It is one of the most powerful feelings we experience as human beings. There is no specific definition of the word "love", as it has a number of connected but distinct meanings which can be used in different contexts.
The word "love" can be used to show affection to people dear to us like our parents, spouses, children and friends. Love can also be used to express satisfaction from things like jobs, houses, cars, mobile phones, pets, jewelry, to name a few. Love can be expressed in form of admiration - you can love a person's sense of fashion, a person's physique, a person's sense of humor, or the sound of a person's voice. The colour of your eyes, your skin tone, your hair texture, and nails are physical features that you can love. The expressions of love in these contexts are not wrong at all, but love is deeper and more complex than that.
Let us look at a few dictionary meanings of love:
As a noun -
As a verb -
Why is love so important to human beings?
Everyone desires to be loved regardless of gender, race, social status or religion - in other words, love does not discriminate. Humans are social beings by nature so relationships are very important to us; love maintains relationships. Knowing that you are loved by someone is the best feeling in the world. A life without love will be boring and lonely - no one wants to be lonely. In fact, a life without love is no life. Such a life is meaningless. Love is meant to be shared. It is to be given and received (to love and be loved). If you look deeper, you will discover that love is more about giving than receiving.
The reality that love is at every phase of human existence makes it very important. Love is all around us, never far from us. Love has to be present for a person to have a happy family or home. If a child is conceived and nurtured in love it has a profound impact on the child's overall well-being. Children born into loveless families often end up emotionally damaged - this shows the importance of love. You cannot show affection to your siblings if you do not have any love to give. No one can make friends and maintain friendships without love. Building and maintaining good work relationships means you need to have love in your heart to give. Where human existence is concerned, love is inevitable - it could change from one form to another throughout human life but it will always be there. Love is life.
Do you not feel elated knowing that someone loves you? I'm sure you do. Love brings forth happiness. The long-lasting love you enjoy from your parents makes you happy. The affection showered on you by your kids makes you happy. You are delighted to know that you are surrounded by friends who care for you deeply and have your best interest at heart. When your spouse says "I love you", your heart leaps for joy. Love is so powerful it can heal a broken heart. It is so powerful it can put a smile on the next person's face. It can change a bad day into a good one. When you are constantly assured of a person's genuine affection toward you, it keeps you happy. That is the power of love.
Has love ever inspired you to do something positive or to aspire for the best in life generally? For some of us, maybe most of us, indeed. That is because love can be a source of motivation - not only because you want your
