From Stockholm To Düsseldorf
At 4:00 a.m. Saturday January 15, 2005, Central Security Service agent Dr. Nicholas Stark approached Stockholm, Sweden's harbor aboard a high speed hovercraft under the alias Dane Scott. Once ashore, Stark would rendezvous with Romanian secret agents Alexandru Iancu and his son, Mihail. The three of them were posing as meteorological researchers. Their mission was relocate the Pirvu family formerly of Bucharest to Germany. The family's security was recently compromised when a Romanian organized crime member recognized them. When Stark drove onto the landing, he quickly noticed Alexandru. Mihail approached from another location. Stark signaled to them by rubbing his right index and middle fingers against his forehead. Stark then drove to a nearby hotel. Alexandru and Mihail soon followed in separate cars. Mihail left the landing once Stark and Alexandru were out of site. Stark and the Iancus entered the hotel from different entrances to confuse any would be assassins. Inside the hotel, each of them went to different suites with adjoining rooms on the same floor to change disguises.
“If everyone gets their new faces quickly, we'll be out of here before sunrise.” Stark said.
“Our Swedish friends outside spotted four Romanian thugs near the docks.” Alexandru stated.
“They're on top of Interpol's most wanted list.” Mihail said.
“I recognize the driver! He's the guy who saw us last week!” Camelia Pirvu exclaimed.
“We have just the thing to throw them off your trail. We're using four bodies from a capsized ferry last week to fake your deaths. In a few minutes, a boat carrying four people will explode. When people run to investigate, police officers will apprehend your thugs. Autopsy results will positively identify the bodies as Camelia, Andrei, Cornelia, and Anton Pirvu. Swedish police will pin the murders on the four thugs outside.” Swedish operative Disa Svennson said.
“Now for your travel plans. We'll travel aboard three high speed single engine prop driven planes. Andrei and Cornelia will leave first with Mihail.” Alexandru stated.
“What about my wife and son? I thought we were going together!” Andrei angrily inquired.
“We're separating you for safety, so some of you will survive if we're discovered.” Stark replied.
“Camelia leaves next with Scott, and Anton leaves last with Dad. All our vehicles are state of the art weather observation aircraft. The whole trip will take around six hours.” Mihail explained.
“Unlike last time, we're hiding in plane site. For the next few hours, we're meteorologist on a quick survey. We'll make one refueling stop and periodically change positions throughout the flight. Now let's get to it. Since all of us, except Dr. Scott, speak Polish, we're Polish meteorologists for this trip. Dr. Scott's an English meteorologist along for the ride.” Alexandru explained.
Once everyone was completely disguised, Stark and his team took off from the airport just after 6:30 a.m. under the cover of darkness. Shortly after 9:30 a.m., Alexandru, Mihail, and Stark, landed at an airport in northern Denmark for refueling and a quick snack.
Just before 1:00 p.m., Mihail landed in Düsseldorf followed soon after by Alexandru and Stark.
“Perfect, gentlemen. Another job well done.” Stark congratulated Alexandru and Mihail.
“Well buddy, you'd probably better make your exit sometime soon before our Germany contact arrives I'm glad you were able to help in last minute operation. We owe you one.” Alexandru stated.
“Don't worry about it. You guys have helped me plenty of times.” Stark replied.
“It'll be a quick debriefing. We'll let you know in a few hours if we need anything else.” Mihail said.
“That works for me. Tell the Pirvus it was pleasure not officially meeting them. Now I've got to go slip away some place and become my true self.” Stark said.
“Great. Looks like you have everything covered.” Alexandru commented.
“Don't I always?” Stark said with a smirk as he nonchalantly walked towards an awaiting van.
Alexandru and Mihail laughed upon hearing Stark's reply.
“Enjoy the rest of the day. We'll see you at the risk management conference Monday.” Alexandru stated.
“Yes you will.” Stark said as he drove away in the van waving.
Promptly at 8:00 a.m. January 17, Stark arrived at the Intercontinental Hotel in Düsseldorf. Stark was pleased to see another respected colleague, Mina Rothenberg, waiting for him in the conference room. The two immediately approached one another, hugged, and kissed each other on the the right cheek.
“I never get tired of that. You're one of the reasons I keep coming back to Düsseldorf.” Stark stated with a smile from ear to ear.
“The feeling's mutual. Hopefully, you're not too jet lagged.” Mina said smiling.
“I got here Saturday afternoon to give myself some time to rest.”
“A wise decision. I didn't arrive until yesterday afternoon, so I'm dragging just a bit. The return flight from Australia always takes a lot out of me.”
“You and me both.”
Suddenly, the Iancus arrived. Stark released Mina's right hand as the two of them stepped slightly away from each other. Stark and Mina slightly blushed and smiled like two teenagers. The Iancus were momentarily speechless.
“Uh. I'm sorry. We're we interrupting something?” Alexandru perplexedly inquired.
“Oh not at all, gentlemen. We just thought you weren't arriving for a few more minutes.” Mina answered as she greeted the Iancus with hugs and kisses.
“We could leave and come back.” Mihail said with a confused look on his face.
“Hey guys, give us a break. It's early in the morning, and we're not quite with it thanks to jet lag.” Stark said upon shaking hands with the Iancus.
“That's why we're speaking first, so you two can have time to join the living.” Mihail said.
“I think it's time for some strong German coffee before our guests arrive.” Alexandru suggested.
“Let's go!” Stark and Mina exclaimed in unison.
An hour after the conference ended, everyone met at the hotel restaurant at 6:00 p.m. For dinner.
“Gentlemen, I understand you're in town for a few more days. You should see my new house.” Mina said.
“We could probably
