The Discovery

On May 1, 2980, human scientists finally achieved super light speed travel. The people responsible for this amazing accomplishment were the brothers Andrew and Thomas Maze along with their wives, Serina and Leona. The younger Maze brother, Andrew piloted the Mercury Super Light Speed Vessel. With super light speed travel a reality, the Earth Planetary Government began sending unmanned deep space probes to the stars in search of Earth like atmospheres. Despite super light speed travel, most probes would take months to reach their destinations. The first probe to reach its destination was the Hermes Probe. This probe designed by the Mazes, began transmitting data to Earth on June 3.

“Hermes has discovered an orange sun with a solar system of five planets! The solar system consists of two outer gas giants and three small inner planets!” Andrew exclaimed.

“Hermes’ study of the planets’ atmospheres indicates the third planet from the sun has an atmosphere similar to Earth’s!” Thomas hollered.

“The planet’s covered with dense vegetation, vast oceans, mountains, freshwater rivers and lakes! Hermes’ further studies reveal abundant animal life! We could probably liver there!”

“As programmed, Hermes landed on the planet to make a more detailed study of the environment, flora, and fauna! Hermes detects no advanced species!”

With its studies complete, Hermes transmitted all findings to Earth and then began the return voyage to the Lunar Research Station where the contents would be studied under strict quarantine. For the next month, celebrations occurred worldwide.

As Hermes traveled towards Earth, Andrew awaited its arrival with much anticipation. If Andrew’s calculations were correct, Hermes would arrive on the Moon on July 3. At 3:00 a.m. July 3, Andrew was dreaming about his childhood. Andrew and Thomas were playing in the pasture west of their house. The farm had not changed much since Jason Maze bought it in 1970. The Maze family maintained the property’s ancient appearance of 1,000 years ago. As Andrew continued dreaming, he really was in 1980. The sight of an automobile and an airplane surprised Andrew. He continued examining the vintage farm equipment. As he walked toward an old manure spreader, the ground became soft beneath his feet. Andrew stepped backwards as the manure spreader began sinking into the ground. The ground soon became water. Within moments, the manure spreader was spinning in a whirlpool. Andrew and Thomas watched in astonishment as the manure spreader disappeared completely. Suddenly, a large green dragon emerged from the whirlpool. Andrew and Thomas quickly ran to the barn as the dragon spread his wings and roared. The two brothers frantically entered the hay loft on the barn’s second story.

“Where’s the dragon?” Andrew said.

At that moment the dragon appeared in the hay loft feeding window waiting for the frightened young boys.

“What are we going to do?” Thomas said.

The dragon looked Andrew in the eyes. The dragon’s intense stare awoke Andrew with a burst of energy.

Andrew left his bed with a sharp pain in his kidneys.

“Where are you
