The Vanguard
In the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy, a secret military forum was in session on the planet Deimos. The Deimosians were discussing their Doctrine of Expansion.
“The Deimosian League has not expanded its territory for decades. The time has come to conquer new planets.” Prefect Goliath stated.
“Recently discovered planets are not conducive to Deimosian physiology. These planets either have inhospitable atmospheres and suns or the indigenous life is hostile.” Field Marshal Ramses said.
“Such is the case with the Mustelidae.” Commandant Delilah responded.
“I fought those Mustelidae badgers 30 years ago! No enemy ever forced Deimosians into a humiliating retreat as they did!” Goliath growled.
“Your famous friends and survivors of the Menagerie, Morpheus and Nyx, were instrumental in negotiating the peace treaty with the Mustelidae Alliance.” Ramses said.
“Aldhelm and his wife, Waerburh, are equally beloved in the Mustelidae Alliance for fighting along side Morpheus and Nyx 44 years earlier when the Chiropterans liberated the captives aboard the Menagerie. The two couples are forever friends despite insidious actions of our governments over the years.” Commissar Salome said.
Morpheus and Nyx served as ambassadors to Mustelidae while Aldhelm and Waeburh simultaneously served as ambassadors on Deimos. Their knowledge of each others’ planets and friendship assured their two species would not attack each other in the future. Such action would be futile, since their military technology was virtually equal. Unfortunately, the Deimosian League did not extend such “respect” to less advanced worlds.
“As Morpheus and Nyx have aged, their influence has waned. Some of their former friends in the government have turned against them for opposing the Doctrine of Expansion.” Delilah stated.
“Opposition toward military conquest was favorable after the defeat in the Mustelidae System, but support for expansion is increasing, because the military has long since recovered. Now the government simply needs to find a habitable planet preferably without hominids.” Ramses concluded.
“Morpheus never revealed the location of the planet where the humans dwell for two reasons- he does not know the location, and the Elysian operative concealed the location. Morpheus would not reveal the location of this planet even if he knew its location, because he fears Elysian retribution.” Goliath stated.
“We lack this fear, Prefect! Elysian super technology is a myth!” Salome interjected.
“For 44 years, secret Deimosian scouting parties have searched the Sagittarius Dwarf, Andromeda, the Clouds of Magellan, and the Milky Way Galaxies for the humans’ home world, and still they find nothing!” Goliath yelled.
“Sir, that may not be true. One of my covert operations scouting parties has just discovered a defenseless blue planet in the Milky Way Galaxy.” Ramses reported.
The scouts immediately transmitted data to their commanders- some of whom were Morpheus and Nyx’s former friends.
“These scouting operations were purposely and skillfully hidden from Morpheus and Nyx, because they would certainly alert alien governments of operations against Earth. All because they deeply respect Jason and Xenia Maze for their efforts against the Caudatans aboard the Menagerie.” Goliath stated.
The military often performed lightning purges of undesirable indigenous populations. The scouts would have an utter contempt of humans.
“Order the scouts to capture a small group of humans for study.” Goliath dictated.
From stealth mode, the Deimosian scouts hovered over the fully operational Lunar Research Station. In an instant, the entire lunar crew was transported aboard the Proskopos scout vessel.
“Now we can study the humans for weaknesses before conducting a stealth survey of Earth.” Ramses said with contentment.
“If the humans prove to be undesirable, and Earth is hospitable to Deimosian physiology, the humans will be purged. In such case, the scouts will serve as the vanguard of an invasion.” Goliath said.
The Omen
The Maze family had just completed a week of business in Billings, Montana. They were staying at their vacation home in Park City. Jason and Xenia were joined by their son Nicholas and his wife, Rita. Nicholas’ second son, Daryl and his wife, Camille, brought their infant twins, Katrina and Henri along for the week. Daryl and Henri shared the same “gift” Jason and Nicholas long exhibited. These four males of the Maze family were deep in REM sleep during the early Sunday morning hours.
Jason was dreaming about the upcoming week of vacation he had scheduled in Deerwood, Minnesota. Jason and the rest of the family were going to visit a retreat in Clearwater Forest. Jason was especially looking forward to seeing Nicholas’ old friend, Nicholas Stark. Nick convinced Stark to take a break from his international business ventures, so he could see
