At 2:00 a.m. Monday November 28, 1994, Central Security Service agent Dr. Nicholas Stark was en route to the Black Sea port city of Constanta, Romania via cargo plane. Stark’s mission was to extract Dr. Nicolae Balcescu and his wife, Dr. Bianca Balcescu. The couple had long been the National Security Agency/Central Security Service’s trusted sources in Bucharest. Nicolae informed Stark that some of his colleagues who helped organize crowds against the Ceausescu family during The Romanian Revolution of December 22, 1989 had been violently murdered. Nicolae feared he and Bianca would soon be targeted. Stark was in total agreement with Nicolae, because some of Ceausescu’s secret police had certainly escaped detection five years earlier. The NSA believed the best remedy for the situation was to relocate the Balcescus. The Balcescus eagerly awaited Stark in a Constanta safe house.
“Pilot, I dread the possibility of facing Ceausescu’s former secret police. After all, they’re seasoned in subterfuge, and I’m only a novice. “What a way to begin my first covert mission. I guess I’d be a fool if I weren’t a little nervous.” Stark said.
“We’ll approach Constanta from the east. The various means we’re using to approach the city should mask your arrival from whoever murdered the Balcescus’ colleagues.” The pilot said.
“Bianca now believes the meetings she and Nicolae had with me were surely under surveillance. The three of us are likely to be murdered if we’re seen together.”
“We’re nearly one mile east of Constanta, it’s time for you to leap.”
“I hope my skydiving training with the Air Force PJ’s was worth it!” Stark shouted as he fell towards the Black Sea at 120 mph.
Stark’s NSA contact aboard the Black Sea Explorer, a spy boat disguised as a research vessel, illuminated a green beacon to guide him to the aft section of the ship. Stark opened his parachute and glided towards the ship’s stern. His picture perfect landing would have made the PJ’s proud.
“If everything goes according to plan, I’ll rendezvous with three agents at the safe house, extract the Balcescus, and fly them to safety.” Stark said to his colleague on the boat.
Upon reaching the docks, Stark drove to the safe house. His three fellow agents reported no suspicious activity. Stark knocked on the door in a coded fashion to signal his arrival.
“What was your worst year in school?” Nicolae responded with his designated question. “Third grade, of course.” Stark promptly answered.
“Come to the front of the class.” Bianca said as she opened the bullet proof door.
Bianca hugged Stark while Nicolae gave him a nervous hand shake. Stark opened a brief case with disguises inside. Stark himself was wearing ebony contacts to hide his bright blue eyes. The contacts matched his jet black dyed hair.
“As I’m explaining the extraction plans, my three fellow agents are planting bombs around the safe house and placing the corpses of two recently deceased drug addicts in the basement. The incendiary bombs will give the appearance of a mafia assassination.” Stark said.
“With luck, the Romanian authorities will be unable to identify the bodies, and our’ would be assassins will believe we were killed in the blast.” Nicolae stated.
As everyone walked toward the cars, a woman and three men approached. Stark and everyone else felt trouble was
