The Stalking Maw

Almost immediately, the lures of sleep began to fade allowing the hard hits of consciousness and reality to come into play. A low groaning sound from the agonized woman lying still on the ground before moving her legs about an inch before falling still once again, then they moved but much more than one inch on the dirt of the deep forest she found herself within.

It was a standard forest like many others in this entire world. It had trees, bushes, plants, grass etc which would sound like a bunch of ‘no shit Sherlock’ facts to anyone who lived probably years on this Earth and spent their free time travelling around the world unless they spent their lives living under a rock for God-knows-how long or something like that.

But for the young lady lying on the ground, slowly getting back on her own two feet before falling over like a toppling building? The area she had suddenly crashed into was now a blurry mess and was difficult for her to make out even the slightest of details. But blinking her eyes almost every ten seconds seemed to be doing the trick as the blurry mess of colors and shapes started to clear up slowly with each blink she took. Finally after a few more seconds, the scene was clear enough for her to see that she was, indeed, in a forest as expected.

Oh, if you asking who this young dumb as hell woman with an utter trainwreck of a once beautiful hair cut inflicted on a messy black dyed hair complete with the remains of a pretty pink dress with a veil and sash. Yup, that was me after a night of drinking at the reception after a wedding. Whose wedding was it? It was between my twin brother and his fiance, my brother’s name is Ron and his fiance’s name is Sarah. Ron is kind of a dunk and clueless at times, but really he’s a great guy and I like him. Sarah is also great too though she can be a bit clueless but not as bad as my brother admittedly, I guess that’s what attracted him. People are weird like that, right?

So anyway back to the story, I’ll be here all day, I was at the wedding of my brother and his fiance, I was one of the bridesmaids as if the description and color of my dress wasn’t enough clues as to what I was if there was someone who never went to a wedding before and was just making my way to the doors leading to the front entrance of St Peter’s church, the place that Ron had chosen to do his marriage which was about fifty miles from our town which I won’t name for privacy reasons and the road from it and my hometown is a large forested area that stretched about several miles across the country with little to no end in sight.

I would’ve tried to see where the forest ended either by walking or something like that. However after plenty of walks through this forest with several of my friends, both men and women, taking new routes and looking around almost every bit of the forest, I couldn’t find the end of the forest, it was like the thing went on forever or some other stupid cliche you want to think of. After a few weeks or longer, I didn’t check or keep track of the time. I decided to give up trying to find the end of the forest and honestly, I believed it was for the best. As much as I liked to explore the forest with my friends and see what it offered, it was very tiring once the trails stopped being easy trails.

I don’t know if you’ve ever climbed up steep or rocky hills while going on a hike. But trust me when I say it is exhausting! Those hills were few and far between the forest, but every time I came across them. I swore my feet would immediately slip from under me and I would nearly go crashing into the ground only for me to somehow catch myself and continue up followed by the same thing happening for the whole trip up. By the time I got up to the hill, I’m tired and covered in sweat, mainly from being nervous as all hell since I was trying my hardest to walk up the hill and not slip like I was walking on an icy river in winter.

That was easier said than done, yet despite me walking through the forest plenty of times in my life time, I still struggled to all hell to get up those hills whenever I came across them. This was probably because I wasn’t always the best rock climber in the batch of
