Part 1

As I’m walking home with my best friend Julie I can’t help but fiddle with my bracelet. It’s so annoying, no matter how many time I try to take it off it just doesn’t work. “Ugh” I groan “this stupid thing is driving me nuts!” I burst out not really directing it at anyone. Julie just shrugged knowing we couldn’t do anything about it.

I’ve had this thing for as long as I could remember, it’s made of a solid material so there is no way it coming off. I don’t have anyone to tell me where it came form because I was dropped off at the steps of an orphanage, I was told that the bracelet was already on my wrist at that point.

The one only weird thing about it is that it’s grown with my wrist.

We finally arrived at Julie’s house after going to the park, we said our goodbyes and as I was walking away she yelled out “TA-TA!” to witch I let out a little chuckle to, that was kind of her thing, grand entrances and exits.

As I was walking down the sidewalk back to my ‘home’ with another foster family, third one in 2 months and I don’t think I’ll like this family either. Good thing I’m almost 18. I pull out my phone and decide to go through Facebook a bit but my eyes slowly wonder over to my bracelet. I let out a big sigh and shove my hands in my sweatshirt pocket.

It’s starting to get a bit chilly out and winter is coming up fast, most of the leaves have fallen from the trees and there is a bit of a breeze. I watched the leaves blow around my feet as I walked strait into someone else. I look up quick enough to see a guy but I was so flustered to really notice. I sped around him quickly mumbling out a quick “sorry.”

“Hey wait!” he called after me. “You dropped your bracelet!” I imminently freeze in my spot and look down at my wrist. Sure enough it wasn’t there. I slowly turn around and look at the guy. In all the commotion I never really realized how sharp he looked I skeptically walked up to him and reached out for the bracelet which he handed to me.

“Uh, thank you.” I stumbled out before turning and walking away a little. I reach in my pocket for my phone to text Julie about what happened but my phone wasn’t there. I panicked and spun around to the guy still standing there.

“And your phone” he said as if he didn’t get to finish his other sentence. “My name is Reed, by the way.” He said with a nod.

“Hannah” I returned giving a slight nod back.

“That’s a lovely name. Nice meeting you, and hope to see you again” Reed called out as I began to walk away. I looked back and gave one last nod before turning the corner to home.

The sun has set by the time I make it in the door and I can already hear my foster parents yelling at each other on the other side. I can’t stand them, they both think everything is about themselves. When I come in the door they will start yelling at me and asking me questions about where I’ve been, like they actually care. They don’t care.

I stand out there a few seconds longer readying myself for the assault of questions and yelling then open the door, but this time it’s like they don’t even see me. They are so focused on each other’s shouting they didn’t hear the door open… or slam closed. I brush it off and decide to go down the hall to my room. I grab my key out of my pocket and unlock my room and lock it behind me. Once I’m in the room I blast my music and lay on my bed eating snacks and scrolling through my phone.

As days go by I realize that nobody sees me. In school I’m always called out as absent even though I am sitting right in front of her. I’ve seen Reed around a bunch after that, he’s the only one that seems to see me so we started to talk more.

I thought he was creepy at first how he kept showing up in random spots, but he is starting to grow on me. Turns out nobody can see him anymore either and also had the same kind of bracelet that fell off as well.

It’s almost my birthday and I stopped showing up for school, nobody can see me anyway so what’s the point. Reed and I are living in an abandoned house together since we can’t get jobs, or pay for an apartment or anything, so we make due.

“Do you want to go outside and pick some more food from the garden?” I call from the kitchen to Reed.

“Sure thing” he called back probably from the living room or somewhere. I smile to myself and go back to rummaging through the refrigerator looking for something to eat.

Part 2

Things began to get fuzzy as someone was touching me and repeatedly started calling out “hey!” suddenly everything turned black. Soon after I started to lift my eyelids and bright light streamed in which made me quickly close them again and turn my head. I try again this time managing to keep them open this time. I saw Reed sitting beside me on a sidewalk with a panicked face, “are you okay? You bumped into me and fell down. It looks like you hit your head pretty hard. Are you okay? I should bring you to get help.” He kept throwing out words like the world depended on it.

Once he said he was going to bring me to help he swooped me up and started to carry me. He brought me to a house at the strange part of the neighborhood where nobody goes (or wants to go) and to a house. Reed set me down on a cot like bed in a room while a lady followed him in.

“What happened?” she asks cutting straight to the point. I don’t answer, instead I just look at the two of them confused, not really knowing what happened myself.

Reed caught on quick and instantly started filling her in “I was walking down the sidewalk and bumped into her. She fell down and hit her head pretty hard on the concrete. She passed out for a few minutes and once she woke up I brought her hear. She even has a…” he trailed off and gave her a look. She seemed to understand it and her eyes flick to my wrist then back up at me. She then proceeds to glance at Reeds wrist and I follow her gaze to see a bracelet just like mine on his wrist.

I look over to the lady’s wrist to see that she too has a bracelet but hers is different colors and designs. She quickly checked up on me then told me her name is Mara and that I should get some rest.

Later that night they explained all about what the bracelets mean. I was told that there was a group of people who are special. They have gifts, the bracelets help us find who are true soul mate is and tell what our gift is. Shortly after that I was told that Reed was my soul mate and our gift is invisibility. That made me start to think about the dream and how it was kind of true. I was also told that my mother died at birth and my father couldn’t handle a child at the same time he was grieving the loss of my mother, so he dropped me off at the door. He soon disappeared after that and nobody knows where he went.

I have a huge decision to make now, accept my soul mate, power, and the life that these people live. Or to deny it all and go back to my life and friends how it used to be.

Going back to my old life is tempting, but I want to accept.

“I accept.” I state boldly.
