Does God Ever… Dance?
Does God ever… dance?
I attended the Sassy Seniors Luncheon at Sharon Baptist Church for a fourth of July celebration. John Lewis, the Music Director of Harrison United Methodist Church, entertained us with a variety of songs: patriotic, religious, contemporary, and a couple of show tunes. During one of the up-tempo numbers, he spun around in dance and at the end of the song, he chuckled.
“Maybe, I shouldn’t be dancing… in church,” he said.
This line stayed with me when I left for home, the words going around in my head as I drove, still with me as the afternoon passed, and on into the night. They finally settled on a resting place until morning, but prodded at me all the next day. Two days later, I found the answer. It made me wonder at my witless mind. Of COURSE GOD DANCES! For what is dancing? but simply a time when a heart fills to overflowing and the emotions take on feet.
I came to the realization that not only does God dance—but He does it a lot! He twirls around and around, exceedingly happy when right choices bring us closer to Him, when strangers befriend strangers, when nations talk instead of fight, when the hungry get fed, and when the oppressed get lifted up. And if He’s not stirring the air with His movements, His heart is making tracks. I have no doubts of this.
I think He dances with each overwhelming goodwill done, but I think it is most likely the small, quiet-moment type of happenings that set His feet to instant rocking: a mother’s smile at her newborn, a breathless whispered, “Thank you,” and a “Forgive me, I’m sorry,” spoken between true tears; and when we kneel in the dark by our bed and end the day with prayer. I’m sure too, that He loves to see hands clasped, and hugs given and returned, without the need of spoken words.
He’s probably going at it right now thinking of how He’s been caught in the act and that someone is cheeky enough to write about it. “Hey, I see you there… dancing, God. Wait up. Slow it a bit and I’ll join right in.”
“Hello, God.”
