The New

On a bright, sunny day, Jodie Amber Kelly and her friends were on their way to the mall. When they got there they split into groups: Melanie Johnson and Carley Harden, Derek Watson and Jason Fought, Conner Brown and Matt Loner, and Alex Andrews, Jodie Kelly, and Amanda Carter. They were supposed to meet back at the food court at 1:00. But right now is when things start to heat up.

When Derek was looking at the video games, a girl came up to him and asked, “Do you know where the food court is?” Without looking at her, he said, “Take a right and go straight from that and your there.” “Thanks. By the way, are you here alone? Not to be rude, I was just curious.” He stood up and saw her; he thought she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. He finally came back to reality and was able to say the answer to the question. “No, I’m with some of my friends. Oh yeah, I’m Derek Watson and you are?” “I’m Susan Hatchet.” “Since you’re heading to the food court you want to get something to eat?” “Sure. That’d be awesome.” When they got seated with their food Susan asked, “So do you have a girlfriend? Just wondering.” “Actually, no.” “Oh. Cool.” A few minutes later, he checked his watch and exclaimed, “It’s 1:00!” “So?” Susan replied. I’m supposed to meet the rest of the group right now.” “Where?” “Here you go.” He just realized. “Then you won’t be late. Um, here’s my number, you can call me if you want.” “Thanks. Um, here’s mine.” “Bye.” “Okay, bye.”

When Derek got back, his friends were mingling with each other. After that they went back to the van, it was completely full of people. Back at Carley’s house, all the girls were in the kitchen and all the guys in the living room. Derek, Jason, Conner, and Matt were sitting on the two couches in the living room. Then Matt asked, “So what did you do in the mall, Derek?” “Well, I kind of met someone when I was looking at the video games.” “What's this person's name?” Jason asked. “Susan.” “So it is a girl!” Conner exclaimed. “Of course she’s a girl, you idiot!” “Sorry, go on” “Well, I was showing her where the food court was and I began to stand up and then I saw her. She was beautiful.” “Man, so you met a girl, fell in love, what else?” Jason asked. “Who said anything about love?” “Sorry dude.” “That’s okay. Well we got lunch.” “Did you get her digits?” Matt asked. “You bet.” “Yeah!” all the guys shouted while high-fiving each other.

“Man, can you believe how loud those guys are?” Jodie asked. “Get used to it.”, Alex said. “I know.” “It sure is easy to know what they’re talking about.” Carley said. “Apparently, Derek is going to get a new girlfriend.” Amanda replied. “Oh yeah.” Melanie said enthusiastically. “So who do you like, Carley?” Alex asked. “I’m not telling you.” “Oh, come on.” “Oh well…” “Who? Who? Who?” Melanie asked enthusiastically. “Matt.”, Carley replied sheepishly. “Matt? Are you serious?”, “Jodie asked surprised. “Well, yeah. He’s amazing, sweet, oh and funny.” she responded with emotion. “Well whatever you say.” Amanda retorted. “So why don’t you ask him out?” Melanie asked. She was silent for a moment then Melanie responded to her silence, “Oh, I see. You’re waiting for him to ask you out.” “Yep.”, Carley answered. Jodie put her arm around Carley’s shoulder and said, “Don’t worry girl, we could say something to him.” Carley pulled away for a second and asked, “What exactly? You’re not gonna say I like him are you?” “Of course not. We’re just going to talk about you to him.” “Well I guess that’d be okay.” “You bet it would.”

“Hey. Have you met my family?” Amanda asked Jodie the next day after shopping. “No. I don’t think I have. Well except for your mom and dad.” “Well my mom wanted me to invite you to meet the rest of my family.” “Why?” “I don’t know.” “Well I’d be glad to anyhow.” “Great.” “So what should I wear?” “Um probably something formal I guess.” “No prob. I got that new cattail dress. I could wear that.” “Ooo that pretty blue one?” “You bet.” “That’d be perfect.” “So what are we going to be eating?” “Fried chicken I think.” “Awesome I love fried chicken.” “I know.” They both laughed. “Come on, let’s get something to eat.” Jodie said happily. “Sure thing.”

That night at Jodie’s house: Alex calls her.

“Alex, it’s not that bad.” “Sounds boring to me.” “Of course it would.” Jodie pulls the dress over her head and lets it fall over her body. She slips on her clear wedges and puts on a necklace and bracelet. “What are you doing?” Alex asked from the other line. “Hey I got to go, bye.” “Bye.” The line disconnected. For the finishing touch, she put the earrings on that Jamie gave her for her 17th birthday. She grabs her purse and keys and leaves.

The drive was short; it only took a few minutes. She got out of her car and knocks on the door. The door opens and a guy about 20 years old appears in the doorway. “You must be Jodie, I’m Aaron.” He reached his hand out to shake hers. She shook it and he squeezed her hand. She smiled and said sweetly, “Nice to meet you, Aaron.” Amanda suddenly appears in the doorway and says excitingly, “Oh, Jodie so you’ve met Aaron. Well, don’t just stand there. Come in, Jodie.” “You look amazing, Jodie.” “Thanks Manda. You look pretty awesome yourself.” “Thanks.” She smiles happily. “Hey I’m Allison. I’m the oldest girl in the family.” A tall blond girl that looked about 19 said as she approached Jodie. “Oh wow nice to meet you, Allison.” “Allison is also the bossiest girl in the family.” Amanda commented behind Jodie. “Hey!” Allison said offended. Amanda just laughed grabbing Jodie by the arm and pulling her along.

Amanda brought Jodie to her other brother, Andrew. “Jodie, this is my brother, Andrew. Jodie. Andrew. Jodie.” She gestured to Andrew and Jodie so that they would meet properly. They shook hands and Jodie smiled sweetly at Andrew, he grinned back and lightly squeezed her hand. “Andrew also attends Alabama State University, and is majoring in history. He wants to become an archeologist one day. Isn't that cool?” Amanda gestures with both arms to Andrew, who was now blushing. He was embarrassed. Jodie chuckled under her breath and Andrew saw. “Are you laughing?” he demanded. “No.”, Jodie replied, trying not to laugh. Andrew stood there, Amanda serenading him, no wonder he was embarrassed. As Andrew stood there, Jodie started to lightly chuckle. Amanda kept babbling on and on about Andrew. Jodie began to laugh and Andrew noticed and said, “What are you laughing about?” Jodie bit her lip and answered with a small grin, “Oh nothing.” “Yeah right.” he said walking toward her. Amanda went her mother’s side and said with a smile, “I think this could work out.” “I don’t know, Amanda. I don’t think they seem to click.” Amanda’s mother said. “They just need some time.” “Maybe…”

Jodie came back to her place with a drowned out smile on her face. She had had fun, but not like she expected to. Jodie had been looking for love for quite awhile, but never found anyone that she thought was worth her while. She had had many boyfriends in her lifetime. But none of them she ever believed that she truly loved. The truth was that she just wanted someone that would love her for who she is and wouldn’t judge her. She was waiting for someone she thought she may never meet.

A Step Forward

The next day, Carley finds Jodie sitting at the ball park. “Hey Jodie, how’d last night go?” Carley asked. “Alright I guess. Could have been better.” “I have an idea. C’mon, now.” Carley said grabbing Jodie and dragging her along. “Where are we going?” Jodie asked running with Carley. “You’ll see.”

An hour later, Carley and Jodie arrive at the coffee shop. “What are we doing here?” Jodie asked when they came inside. Before Amanda could reply, a guy with sandy blonde hair walked out of the door marked, “EMPLOYEES ONLY”. He was about 5’9, tan skin, nicely built, gorgeous… “Carley, what are you doing here? You’re off today.” his voice was like honey, incredibly sweet. “Yeah, I know, Ryan. But I wanted to talk to you about a date night where you sit at a table and after 15 minutes, a different person comes to your table.” Right then, Jodie perked in, “That’s what you were planning?” “Well yeah. I’m gonna find you a boyfriend.” Carley said smiling. “Well Carley, that sounds like a pretty good idea.” Ryan said suddenly looking directly at Jodie with huge brown/blue eyes. “That’s awesome.” Carley said giddy with joy. Right then, Ryan began to walk toward Jodie, extending his hand, “I should introduce myself. I’m Ryan Carter, and you are?” I’m Jodie Kelly.”, she said taking his hand and shaking it. “Wow, his hand is soft.” Jodie thought. “Well, Jodie, I guess I’ll see you Friday night.” Ryan said grinning. “Okay...” Jodie replied. And then he was gone…

“Hey, Matt! Wait up!” Melanie yelled to Matt when she saw him walking. She finally caught up to him and began to speak again, “Matt, you want to have lunch? I need to talk to you about something.” “Yeah, sure.” Matt replied.

Once they were inside with their food, Matt began to speak, “So what did you want to talk to me about?” He picked up his sandwich and took a large bite out of it. “Well, I was wondering something. What do you think of Carley?” Melanie said picking up her food as well. “Well. To be honest with you, I’ve had the biggest crush on her. She’s just so beautiful and eccentric.” “For how long have you had these feelings?” “I realized it 3 years ago when she volunteered to tutor me in Algebra. I noticed how cute she looked when she was in thought, the way her hair shined whenever the light hit her, how adorable her smile was when she laughed. I really like her, Mel.” “Matt, why haven’t you talked to her about how you feel?” “I didn’t think she felt the same way. I thought she only saw me as a friend.” “Matt, she does feel the same way and thought you only saw her as a friend. You have to tell her, immediately. Here’s the plan in 20 minutes, head to the coffee house and tell her how you feel.” “Okay.” As Matt walked off, Melanie pulled out her phone and called Amanda, “Hey Mandy, get the stuff. See you at the coffee shop in 20.”

“You’re last name is Carter?” Jodie said to Ryan looking into his eyes. “Yeah.”, Ryan retorted. “Do you know Amanda Carter?” “Yeah, she’s my cousin. You know her?” “She’s my best friend. Funny, I’ve never seen or heard anything about you.” “It’s because I’m not a favorite.” he said with a grin. “Heh, small world.”

“Sure is.”

When Matt arrived, he walked up to Carley who was simply just drinking a cup of coffee. He taps on her shoulder and as she turns around, he begins to speak, “Carley, I’ve been in love with for 3 years and I never told you. You’re amazing and beautiful, Carley. Will you go out with me?” “Oh, Matt, of course I will.” Carley said hugging Matt. Jodie watched them walk out hand in hand then she began to walk over to a table where 3 girls sat. The girl sitting on the left was Amanda, her blonde hair hidden underneath a curly brown wig. She wore a hot pink shirt with golden skinny jeans accompanying hot pink flats, over her eyes; she wears dark sunglasses that hide her eyes. On the right sat Melanie, her brown hair now a mix of blonde and purple. She wore a turquoise tube top with purple jeans and turquoise vans. Sitting against the wall, sat Alex, her black hair now a bright red, short and flowing. She wore a neon green top with black, shiny shorts with ripped tights and black pumps. “I see this must be another one of Amanda’s plans.” Jodie said smiling. “Actually, this was Melanie’s idea.” Amanda says through bright pink lips looking toward Melanie. “Guilty.”, Melanie said grinning largely. “Well nice job, guys. I see you wanted to see it happen, but didn’t want to be recognized. Correct?” Jodie asked. “Yes. Also, we got something for you too.”, Melanie said pulling out a long black wig with purple blue streaks, a neon blue skirt, a yellow cropped top, and the black knee-high converse of her dreams. “Whoa.”, Jodie manages to say. “How bout we head to the mall?” Amanda suggested. “Okay.”, everyone replied back.

“Hey. Who is this?” Susan said after Derek dialed her phone number into his phone. “Hey. It’s Derek Watson, from the mall.” Derek said when Susan came on the line. “Oh, hi, Derek, What’s up?” “I was wondering if you might want to go see a movie with me.” “You mean, like a date?” “Yeah, a date, is that okay?” “Derek, I would love to.” “Oh awesome, I’ll pick you up at 7.”

“Hey Jodie, I’m so glad you came.”, Ryan said as Jodie walked into the coffee house, laying her gold frenge jacket on a chair. “Did you ever doubt that I would?”, Jodie said, walking toward him. “Well thanks for coming. Why don’t you help me set things up.” “Okay, what first?” “Here, hang up this garland. There’s a ladder over there.”, he said, handing her the black garland and positioning to where the the ladder stood.” “I’ll get right on it.” Jodie walked toward the ladder then, holding the garland, positioning it where it should be. She climbed the ladder and taped the garland down and stepped toward the top of the ladder and started to reach higher to tape the next part up. She reached again, higher and slipped and started to fall.

“JODIE!!!!!”, Ryan yelled as he ran to her as she started to fall. Right before she was about to hit the ground, she landed in his arms. “You saved me.”, Jodie said, looking into Ryan’s eyes, which were a bright turcoise blue. “Yeah, I guess I did. Are you okay?” He put her down then, her legs unsteady. “I think so.” “Maybe I shouldn’t have had you to do that on your own.” Yeah, probably not.” “Hey, I’ll tape the rest up and you can work on the refreshments. Sound good?” “Awesome.” He grabbed her hand then and pulled her into a hug. “I’m just so glad you’re okay.”, Ryan said, still holding her close. “So am I.”

Unexpected Things

“So far everything is going well with the speed dating.” Ryan says, fixing another pot of coffee. “Yeah, it is.” Jodie says watching the next rotation talk. Carley walks in then and comes to Jodie. “Jodie, now why exactly are not out there meeting a guy?” she says. “Well… there is an even amount of people out there and if I get out there, it’ll be an odd number which doesn’t work.” “Then both of you get out there?” “Me?” Ryan says, a look of shock on his face. Jodie looks from Carley to Ryan then back to Carley. “Carley, are you sure?” “Somebody has to take care of the refreshments and if I go, there will be nobody to take care of them.” Ryan says. “Then I’ll take care of it and you two get out there.” She says, literally pushing Ryan and Jodie out with all the people. Jodie hears Carley hit the bell then and Ryan finds a table and sits down and Jodie finds one behind him and sits as well. People have started to realize that there were two new players in the game. A guy with sandy brown hair came to Jodie’s table. She watched as Ryan got up to sit with a girl with blonde curly hair. Guys always have to move, girls stay in speed dating. The guy that sits down across from her began to speak, “Hey I’m Jordan Burke. I love hard rock music, dancing, and I am 19 and plan on being a marine biologist someday.” He had a nice voice that was deep but flowed, it was pretty enticing. “Oh well that’s really cool. Well I’m Jodie Kelly. I also love dancing and I love to write. I am 17 years old and I plan on either writing for a living or being a fitness instructor.” “Oh well that sounds really awesome and you seem really nice.” “Thanks, you too.”

At exactly 7’o clock, Derek arrives at Susan Hatchet’s home and walks out his car and to her front door. He had spiked his jet black hair and was now wearing dark blue jeans, a Three Days Grace tee shirt with a black leather jacket. He knocks on the door and he hears shuffling and then Susan’s voice through the door saying, “One second, I’ll be right there.” A bit more shuffling then the door opens and she walks through it. Her wavy blonde hair is now straightened and looking longer, her lips, a bright pink. She wears a one shoulder, purple flowered top, a pair of ripped blue jeans, and purple flats. Derek is at loss of words. “Derek? Are you alright?” she says. “Uh yeah. You just look fantastic.” He finally says. “Awe, thank you.” She begins walking toward the car and he opens the door for her and she climbs in.

Susan was hesitant about seeing a movie with Derek. Most guys she would go out with would want to make out the whole time, which she didn’t want to do. But… Derek wasn’t like the other guys she had dated in the past. He was sweet and nice, and seemed like he liked her for her not just because she was pretty. She thought about this a good while until Derek spoke up. “So what movie would you like to see?” he says looking at Susan. Susan looked up at the movie show times, and only saw one movie that sparked her interest. It was called ‘Halie Rising’, sounds like an action thriller. “Um ‘Halie Rising’ looks good.” Susan says. “Oh yeah, I’ve seen the trailer for it. It looked really good. We’ll see that.” She smiled then and walked up to the ticket-box with him.

After 8 minutes of participating in the speed dating, Ryan was getting pretty bored. So far, he had met 4 different girls. One a scuba diver that was in love with the water and could not stop talking about ocean life. The second was a gamer that was obsessed with having and playing the newest games and would drone on and on about it. The third was worst of all, she was a self-absorbed snob that would only talk about herself and would get mad if he tried to say something, saying that he was interrupting her. The fourth was a girl named Alyssa, she was his age, exactly 19, and she was majoring in Philosophy. She was also someone he got along quite well with, she had a sense of humor and she talked about how she was also a nature lover. Ryan was interested in her… but when the bell rang and Alyssa gave him her number all her could think about was the table he now walked to. Jodie’s table.

“Hey.” Jodie says as Ryan sits down at her table. “I don’t know how Carley talked us into this.” he says, rubbing a hand through his hair. “Neither do I. Most of the people I’ve met are crazy.” “Tell me about it. It’s been awful.” “So I guess you should tell me about yourself.” “Well I’m 19 years old, I study Philosophy online, I have 3 brothers and one sister, I love animals and I am afraid of snakes.” She chuckles a little and begins to speak, “Okay. I am 17 years old, I am a junior in high school, it’s my second semester, I have one brother, I love to act and dance, I also love animals, and I am afraid of spiders.” “Very interesting Jodie Kelly. You are not one of the crazy ones.” “Haha neither are you.” “That’s good to hear.”

After 20 minutes, the speed dating was over and Carley and Ryan were cleaning up and Jodie was gulping down a cup of coffee. “Do you need any help with cleaning up?” Jodie says, passing her empty coffee cup toward Ryan. He takes it from her and sticks it in the dishwasher and says, “No, I think me and Carley have it covered.” “Actually, I have to leave. Mom called and told me that Dad is home from his business trip. So I’ll see y’all later.” She says walking toward the door. “But Carley, this was your idea.” Ryan says from across the room. “Look I’m sorry, but Jodie is still here so she can help. Bye.” She says then takes off her apron and walks out the door. Jodie turns on her stool to face Ryan then. “Well I guess it’s just me and you then.” he says to Jodie, running a hand through his hair. “Yeah I guess it is.”

“Well that took longer than I thought it would.” Ryan says wrapping his fingers around a plastic cup of water. “It sure did.” Jodie says. “Hey it’s only 10 o’clock, why don’t we do something?” “Like what?” “How bout we go dancing. I know this club nearby. And they don’t serve any alcohol. Would you like to go?” “Um I’d love to but I’d like to change first.” “Yeah that’s fine. I’d like to change as well, I’m pretty sure I have coffee stains on this shirt.” She laughed and walked toward the door. “Yeah I think I see a couple.” He smiles and walks out the door, Jodie following him.

Jodie goes inside and changes into a turquoise blue suede dress with black flats and pulls her sandy brown hair into a ponytail and began to walk down the stairs toward the door. Her parents had went out that night so no one was home except her older brother, Stephan, who was passed out on the couch. She locked the door then walked out. She got into Ryan’s car and he started to drive. “You look great.” Ryan says, looking away from the road for a moment. “Thanks.” Jodie says, smiling. Ryan had stopped at his house and changed into a navy button-down and jeans with navy sneakers. Jodie had thought he looked great and kept her thinking.

“Wow this place is amazing.” Jodie says, walking inside the club. “Yeah it really is.” Ryan grabs her hands and says, “C’mon, let’s go dance.” She lets him lead her to the floor and she starts to dance with him. The music was loud but strangely calming. It made Jodie just want to let go, she danced at heart’s end. She looks at Ryan, who is dancing quite near, smiles at her and she smiles back. “Are you having fun?” he says. “Most definitely.” The music changes then and Jodie hears the D.J. say, “Alright everyone let’s slow this party down.” Ryan and Jodie look at each other for a second and Ryan grabs her hand and pulls her close and they begin to dance. She lays her head against him as they dance.

“I had a great time, Derek. Thanks for the movie and the food. It was amazing.” Susan says, smiling as they stand in front of her front door. “It was no problem, I had a lot of fun too. So will I be seeing you again?” Derek says walking closer to her. “Well of course.” She says. She smiles and Derek kisses her on the cheek. “Goodnight Susan.” “Goodnight Derek.”

“Jodie?” Ryan says, still swaying along with Jodie. “Yes?” Jodie says, looking up to face him. He stares at her for a second, just looking into her eyes. They were a turquoise blue like her dress. The eyeliner around her eyes made her eyes look brighter and larger. He thought she was so beautiful. He leaned in then his lips found hers. He kissed her softly but full of passion. She moved her hand to rest on his neck and he began to cup her face. They lifted away and stared at each other once more.

A New Beginning

Jodie lays on her bed thinking, about all that happened the day before. Going to the coffee house and meeting Ryan again, almost falling off a ladder, going through a crazy situation of speed dating that seemed completely insane, going to a club with an extremely cute guy and ended up kissing him. Right then, Amanda, Carley, and Alex come in. “Sorry, I came as fast I could. But then Carls and Alex wanted to come too. So here we are.” Amanda says walking toward a chair in the corner. Carley settles onto the futon where Alex has already planted herself. “Okay but I have a reason. For one, I work with the guy after all and I practically set them up. So of course I should come.” Carley says. “I just came to hear the details.” Alex says, a smile appearing on her face. “Okay for one, Ryan is my cousin that’s why I was going to talk to her. I know him better, I grew up with the guy after all.” “Okay listen, it wasn’t even a date. After we got done cleaning, he suggested we go do something and I agreed. It was as simple as that. I didn’t know he would kiss me. But well sure we may have had chemistry but, it was not a date.” “Sounds like a date to me.” Carley says looking at Jodie. “Alright so have you spoke to him since last night?” Amanda says, looking directly at Jodie. “Well yeah. He called me this morning.” Jodie says. “And what did he say?” “He said that he enjoyed last night and would like to see me again and I told him that I had a good time too and would really like to see him again also.” “Ooo we should double date.” Carley says, a grin forming across her face. Jodie just stares at her. “Look, I think you should see him again. I’m happy for you Jodie and Ryan is a good guy.” Amanda says. “So you went to a club? What was that like?” Alex asks. “It was fun, really fun.”

After the girls left, Jodie felt exhausted from explaining everything that happened that night. From the speed dating to the cleanup, to the club where we kissed. The wanted every detail Jodie had and she told everything she could. She thought about going on that double date with Carley and Matt as Carley suggested, but her and Ryan weren’t even official. For one, they hadn’t even seen each other since that night. Which means she needs to talk to him and probably simply just get to know him and not rush anything.

Derek’s date had actually gone quite well and he wants to see Susan again. Something about Susan just got him, the way she talked, the way she looked, just her personality made him feel great all over. He was pretty sure, she had a great time too, he could tell by the look on her face, the way she smiled. He just met her and yet he was already starting to fall for her. Something about her just kept him coming back, he just couldn’t figure it out.

Melanie Johnson had just downed her 3rd cup of coffee when a guy walked in that she had never met. He sat down next to her at the bar and spoke clearly, “One cup of coffee please, black.” Melanie looked at him slightly and looked into her empty coffee cup. The coffee did nothing for her, it simply went through her, keeping her sane, was about all it did. As the man behind the counter gave the guy his coffee, he spoke up, “More coffee?” “Yes please.” Melanie says as he started to pour more coffee into her cup. She grabbed to sugars and one creamer and poured them into her coffee and started to stir it. The guy beside her finally spoke up, “You must really love coffee.” He smiled at her and she grinned slightly. “Yeah well, this is my fourth cup.” “Goodness, and it looks like it hasn’t affected you at all. I’m Patrick, by the way.” “I’m Melanie, nice to meet you; and yeah it just seems to only keep me sane.” He laughed and it deemed contagious and she started to laugh too. He glanced at his watch and sighed. “I have to go, but it was really great to meet you and maybe I can see you again?” “I’d like that.” He grabbed a napkin and scrawled down a number and gave it to her. She took it and he spoke again, “Till then.” She smiled as he walked out and the man behind the counter spoke once again, “Well he seemed nice.” “Yes, yes he did.”

“Amanda speaking.” Amanda says, answering a cell phone on the 3rd ring. “Amanda? It’s Adam, you know, your brother?” She heard a familiar voice say on the other line. “Adam? It’s been so long. How are you? When will you be back?” “Whoa calm down. I’m pretty good, I hope the family is too. It’s going to be another 2 years till I get back so don’t get anybody’s hopes up, okay?” “Okay; and yes we’re all good here. Mom and dad put up your photos though, I guess so they don’t have the reminder of you being gone. I really miss you Adam. And why did you call me and not the others?” “I miss you too, Amanda and like I said, I don’t want them getting their hopes up when I don’t exactly when I’ll be back and Mandi, you know you’ve always been my favorite sister.” “And you’ve always been my favorite brother. By the time you get back, I’ll be graduating from high school.” “I know and I’m definitely trying to shoot to be there then. You know I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Now Amanda, I have to go; but are you gonna keep my secret?” “Of course I am.” “Good. I’ll try to be in touch. I love you Mandi.” “I love you too, Adam.” And the line cut off.

Hearing from Adam had got Amanda in a sort of trance and she knew she couldn’t tell the rest of the family; she knew good and well how’d they’d act and she couldn’t do that to them. So you wouldn’t tell them he even called, she’d just keep quiet and act as nothing happened. She’s used to it by now, she’s hid enough secrets for her brother; the one she cared about the most. Amanda had never even told Jodie she had another brother, she didn’t want her to know. With Adam taking off at 18 and moving to England to attend school there and then never moved back; it was something they liked to keep to themselves. That’s why the pictures were put away of Adam, her parents didn’t want the reminder of him leaving. Amanda was the only one who knew why he truly left. Adam needed to get away and find himself, and being here wasn’t helping him be who he is. The shadow of what the family wanted him to be wasn’t what he wanted. He wanted to go and find his own destiny without the influence of his family; and Amanda understood that. In fact, she was the only one who understood that, more than anyone; because she would do the same thing. So she kept his secret as she always did.

At Connor’s house, Jason and Connor sat on the couch with their controllers in their hands and their headsets around their heads playing Call of Duty: Black Opps. This is how a typical afternoon at the Brown household went. Jason and Connor playing video games till the wee hours of the morning in Connor's basement and not regretting a thing. They usually played with Derek as well, but lately they hadn’t been seeing very much. Jason figured it was because the girl Derek had met at the mall. They were happy about it at the time, but in all honesty; they missed their friend. The crazy one that always yelled at the game whenever he died, which would make Connor and Jason laugh hysterically at their friend’s defeat. Now, the game was still fun, as always but without someone to make jokes with, it wasn’t as fun. Connor finally ripped his headset off and paused the game. “What gives?” Jason questions Connor. “It’s just not the same without Derek. I think we need a new gaming buddy. With Matt with Carley now and Derek meeting this girl; our gaming hasn’t been as good.” Connor says. “You got a good point, but how are we supposed to find
