CHAPTER ONE

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               GROWING UP IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Rose was a regular teenage youth born and grew up till the age of 16 in the urban neighborhood Of Dorchester Ma. Her mother was black, and her father was a mixture of Indian and black, so Rose looked mixed. Around her area where she grew up, and at school, they called her black Rose. Her friends called her black Rose because she loves talking black consciousness for which she took pride in. Occasionally with her friends, she would get into discussions about the system, black culture, religion, and her outlook on life being a young black teenager. She went to the middle public schools in the area which she loved going and especially meeting up with her friends at school, one in particular which is her bosom friend Linda. They were inseparable. Every morning they will eat breakfast together in the School cafeteria, and also at lunchtime. They truly loved each other, so sometimes they would get together on the weekends, go to the movies, hangout, go downtown to shop, the typical teenage girls’ kind of stuff. Now, Rose comes from a very strict family where there are rules and so on that, she needs to follow or else. Her mother and father were surely the serious type of parents who will not go for any type of foolishness from their daughter, and Rose was their only child, so they were tough on her. They did not want her to pick up into any bad influences or hang around with the wrong friends to be led astray and mess up her life. She was all they had, so they consistently tried their best to keep her out of harm’s way. They would always lecture her about evil vices and friends leading friends astray. The area that they live is a rough rugged section; there are gangs and the common violence that goes on in most urban black neighborhoods of America. As being their one and only daughter, they consistently got their eyes on her, which you can’t scrutinize them especially in these time in some of the urban areas of America, where people just don’t care too much for each other, specifically in the streets. Now, Rose was an upbeat girl always full of life, and just a typical teenager who likes to spend time with her friends and family. She showed them a lot of love, and she received love back from her loved ones also. Her family was Catholic, so every Sunday they would be in church, in which Rose would be there too with them. It seems like she did not like going to church that much, but with her type of parents, she definitely had no other choice. She always did her best to please them as much as she can, due to the fact they were her parents and she loved them. She always tried her best to please them. They always advised her about drugs, alcohol and the typical vices out there. Oh yes, they were strict, but they let her have her little freedom whereas she can go outside and hang out with her friends, go over their houses sometimes, spend the night, and so on. Now, Rose had no brothers or sisters, she was the only child. She had cousins, some of them she was kind of close with and sometimes hang out, so not having other siblings was not too much of a big deal to her. The area where they live was not in a good environment, so her parents always talked about moving out to the suburbs and asked her at times how she felt about moving away to a better area. The situations in her neighborhood were really getting out of hand. The young guys would shoot each other; sell drugs in plain sight without no fear in the world. Now, this was scary to her parents with what was going on in plain sight day after day. They definitely did not want to go on raising their daughter in an environment like this. Some of the guys who sold the drugs in the area, one or two of them had sisters who were friends with Rose, and they were really cool with her. Once in a while, she would go over these same girl’s houses. They attended the same school, were in the same grade, and were in most of the same classes. After school, they would ride the bus back home together, or sometimes just walk the little distance. Once in a while, she and these same girls would end up in confrontations with other girls while on their way from school trying to make it back home. Some of these clashes sometimes would end up being so violent. These girls at times would have knives on them, box cutters and really out there to do serious damage. Her parents always warned her about these situations and runnings with these girls out there on those streets. They just did not want their daughter to be another statistic like the others they see on the news on TV or read in the newspapers. Her parents know out there at times, it can be very dangerous. Now, this was really stressing out her parents to the point where they wanted to see if they could get Rose out of this school and try to get her into a Catholic school, for which they would have to pay a fee every month. Rose was not too happy about that idea, so she would end up in arguments and shouting matches about this and enrolling into a Catholic school. She was not hearing that at all. She would try her best to talk them out of it and promise that she would drop those friends and concentrate on her school work, but they would not believe her. The reason was that they had these same arguments every now and then, and she will feed them the same answers, but never did what she promises. For a week or two she would not deal with them and then after those two weeks there she is again hanging out with the same girls. It was a tough situation on the parents’ end. They really worried a lot about her and they just knew they could not give up on her. Her parents felt the only solution were to move her out the neighborhood or change schools and enroll her in a Catholic school. Now, Linda who she considered her bosom friend was a real decent type of girl. She was the kind of girl who did not give her family problems and did not like getting into trouble or fights. Every now and then Linda would come over Rose house to hang out and play video games, which they loved and really enjoyed. Linda would sometimes give her advice and really look out for her friend. They had a really close bond. She was like that sister who was just from another mother. Linda knew the situation with her friend and the sometimes drama that plays out with her parents. She really felt sorry for her because she knew how she loved her friends, school, and her neighborhood even if the area was kind of bad. Rose was stuck in a distressing position, so it made her stress, depressed because she just could not phantom moving out to a new area. Especially, the suburbs where she would have to make new friends, attend a different school, and all the other changes. It really had her dispirited and feeling out of sorts. As time went on it seems like she was changing due to the fact, she was not hanging out too much as she uses to with the neighborhood girls. She will spend more of her time with Linda her bosom friend and sometimes would go spend the weekend with her cousins in Springfield Ma. She loved spending time with her cousins; they had a good time together. There were times she would not want to go back home, but she had no choice to go back because she had to attend school the following Monday. Her parents were seeing the little changes but yet still the violent crime and shootings in the neighborhood made them really weary and scared for themselves and their daughter. Every now and then they will see Rose talking to certain guys in the neighborhood. Some of them live close by, but they knew she was growing up and they did not really make a big deal with her interacting with these guys. They felt she should know how to deal with them and not let them pressure her into sex and all that crazy stuff. Also, they did not want her to get pregnant at her young age and to go through the tough experience of being a teen with a kid to take care of. Rose had her head on her shoulders when it came to those guys, she just knew better and would let them know straight of the bat, she will not be intimate with them. They did try a good couple of times to get her to go to bed with them, but Rose would let them know straight up no. For some reasons or the other when it came to those guys, her parents just had confidence in her that she would not let those boys manipulate and sweet talk her into going to bed with them. Surely everybody knew Rose was a people’s person, very friendly and helpful to others, especially her friends and family. She had plans for her life and future ahead. Being a people type of person who loves to help others, Rose wanted after she graduated from high school to enroll in a nursing program, so she can become a nursing aide.

She was doing the very best she can to stay away from trouble and trying to focus on school and family. Everything seems to be going smoothly; she was less outside and more inside. Her friend Linda will sometimes check on her and chill out at the house. Then she had an uncle who was her mother little brother who was in his mid-30s, he would once in a while visit them and sometimes ate dinner with the family. He lived just one block away which was not that far, it was probably a 10 minutes’ walk from his house to theirs. Her uncle smoked drugs, also was a heavy drinker, so every now and then he would come over being high from drinking or smoking substances. Her mother would talk to him very seriously about quitting this drug and alcohol habit he has. He would always say it's not all that bad, so it is not a problem and does not think that he needs help, plus to enroll in a drug or alcohol program. He was a good guy even having this problem. When he was sober, he was the coolest guy you can ever meet, so they knew he was a good person, and they would never stop him from visiting or be too hard on him. It was her mother little brother, so both Rose and her mother love him a lot. They never let the drugs and alcohol stop them from caring about him and showing him love.

Her uncle name was Lenny but the folks in the neighborhood called him Cisco. He was the type of guy who looked out for his family, especially his nieces and nephews. In his younger years, he hung on those same streets and went through the experiences of getting into trouble and typical problems sometimes that occurs out there. Even till this day, you can still see him hanging out there with old school friends from back in his days, who he grew up with. Most of the time you can find Cisco at the neighborhood bar socializing with his buddies drinking corona beers and playing pool. He had a job where he will work from 7:00 a.m. in the morning to 3:30 p.m. in the evening as a cook at a restaurant in the downtown area. He was a good cook, he really loved cooking, and it was just one of his passions. He did not have any kids, but he lived with a girlfriend who was from the Caribbean. As a teenager, he was a tough kid out there on the streets. He had running’s with the law, whereas going to jail for petty theft, and a few times getting caught with drugs on him. As he grew out of his teenage years into his 20s, Cisco just changed and stopped with the idleness that brought on trouble to oneself, and just stayed out of things that bring on problems. Overall, he was a good guy who had a troubled teen life, grew out of it and totally changes.

CHAPTER TWO

                                                                                                                                                                               SHOOTING AT THE BAR

One night at the bar he was with his friends hanging out having beers just laughing, talking about old times and just having fun.On this Saturday night around 9:30 p.m. while having a couple of drinks with friends and ole talking, three guys walked in the bar looking normal, and not really suspicious at all. They ordered drinks and sat at the bar conversing with each other, so nobody really thought anything funny or fishy about them. All of a sudden one of them walked up to Cisco and his friends, while the other two followed. The first guy that walked up pulled a gun on Cisco and his friends and told them to give up all their money. Cisco and his friends were really surprised at what seems to be going down. Now being kind of hesitant one of Cisco friend says to the guy, “I’m not giving up nothing”, and the guy with the gun just slapped him across the face. Now, a dude behind the bar and a few other patrons are looking on in shock of what’s taking place, yet they just stayed cool. Now Cisco, when his friend was slapped rushed the guy with the gun and while scuffling with each other, the gun went off hitting Cisco in the left shoulder. While everybody was scrambling for cover the three guys ran out of the bar. Cisco yelled out that he was shot, so his friends start panicking and rushed over to his aide. Two of Cisco friends picked him off the floor rushing him to the car and drove him to the nearby hospital, where they patched the gunshot wound and released him the same night. The bullet went in and out his shoulder, and he thanked God it was not life-threatening or nothing serious as being dead. On his way back home from the hospital, he let his friend drop him off at his sister’s house to let them know what happened at the bar and him getting shot. His sister had already known from one of his friends who called them on the phone. Still, Cisco just gave them the whole rundown of the situation that transpired at the bar. Rose and her mother were really out of it when they heard the news of Cisco getting shot and prayed that he will be alright. So, they were happy that he was okay and talked to him about drinking at the bar and all that stuff, but Cisco being Cisco told them don’t worry it just was not his time to meet his maker. His sister then convinced him to stay over the night at their house so he can get some rest and the next day he can return home, whereas he will be a little better and feel somewhat stronger. Cisco decided he will sleep over, as he was kind of tipsy from
