Prologue

"I had been wounded for I am weak, I had been betrayed for I am too trustful. Now, they will bear my anger as I will not be at peace for eternity knowing they are merry. They will taste my revenge for I will not pardon those who wronged me..."

-Evangeline

1497, Canterbury, England

"Miss Evangeline please do not run! If the Mistress will know of this escapade of yours, she will surely punish not only me but you as well." Cassandra warned me with a worried look. She's my handmaid and my close friend as well. Although, she complains about my unruly manner, she stays loyal to me and not once has she ever told my mother about my mischievous behaviour.

"I am not afraid of my mother." I retorted.

"You should be. Even though she is your mother, you are still subject to the law. No one can be excluded. If we are to be found out, we will suffer the consequences. So, I beg of you Miss Evangeline, Let us head back and finish your incantation lesson."

I hate to admit it but what Cassandra is saying is the truth. All the rules are covenant to be followed and obeyed by the entire community. Anyone who breaks it will be punished accordingly---And my mother, Aurora, is the head Mistress who governs the law. We are a community of Enchanters but we are commonly called a Witch by ignorant people who think that we are bad and ugly who take children and eat them like in the old fairy tales. But they will all be astonished if they find out what a beautiful creature we are. In fact, we make the village beautiful and we preserve the peace and order.

"Alright, I concede." I sighed and started to head back when I heard the sound of a horse trotting coming from across the field from where we are. I curiously peeked behind the tall bush and saw a boy riding on a black horse to the direction of our Manor.

"Prosternat Se!" I chanted the incantation which I have remembered and to my astonishment the boy fell off the horse.

"Oh no! Miss Evangeline, what did you do?" Cassandra panicked.

"I made an incorrect incantation, I suppose. I wanted to make him stop and inquire as to who he is and why is he in a haste. Oh! I remember it now. I should have said; "Quiesco." I mumbled to myself like a fool and slapped my forehead.

"For Pete's sake! Please think carefully before you act. Now, let us head home before somebody finds out that it is you who did that to the poor lad."

"I will not. I should go and help him." I said determined.

"Evanesco!" I chanted again and the tall bush disappeared. At least this time I was able to chant it properly.

"My goodness! That was your mother's Winter honeysuckle!" Cassandra blurted out of exasperation. "It was blocking my way." I said stubbornly. Cassandra was still talking to me but I just ignored her and ran towards the man lying on his back on the grassy field. I was astonished when I saw him at a close distance. He is so incredibly handsome. It is my first time to ever admire someone of my opposite sex. In fact, I do not care about them at all but for the first time, I wanted to know this stranger.

"Excita---"

"Are you planning to turn me into a frog, lady Evangeline?" He jested faintly and slowly opened his eyes.

What a beautiful pair of emerald green eyes... I thought to myself.

"Of course not! and how did you know of my name?" I said defensively. Although, I know he might be right if I make an incorrect enchantment again. He briskly stood up before he speak and I was astonished yet again for how tall he is. I think he is of the same age as me or older maybe a year or two but he is quite very tall and very handsome at that proximity. His green eyes are also gleaming while staring at me.

"Well, are you not the infamous Evangeline Bailey? The only daughter of Mistress Aurora, is it not? I have heard very much about you and it seemed they were true..." He stated meaningfully.

"Oh! I did not know that I am that famous. What have you heard about me Mister...?"

"Ellixiel Wright. You may call me, Ellis, milady." He said courtly and extended his hands to me. I took it and to my surprise he lightly kissed the back of my hand then let it go gently. I was astounded not only to his gestures but to the electrifying sensation that I have felt at that brief contact.

"Oh! my name is, w-well you know my name but, then you may just call me, Evangeline." I mumbled.

"It is my pleasure meeting you, Evangeline. And what I have heard is not that awful so worry not. " He replied charmingly.

"Hmmm.. That does not sound appealing to me though.. And... oh! I really am terribly sorry. Are you alright? I did not mean to harm you but I was too careless to use a spell---" I stopped mid-way and covered my mouth when I realized what I was about to say. It is after all forbidden to use any spell outside the lesson quarters and especially if it is unnecessary. "I am alright, and do not worry, I will tell no one." He winked at me. "But do be careful of chanting those incantations, it might be dangerous and is against the law to use for amusement." He then said seriously.

"Miss Evangeline!"  Cassandra called my name breathlessly while running towards us. "You are a lady, please do not run as you please or your dress will be ruined."

"Cassandra, come here, this is Ellixiel." I said ignoring her lecture.

"Oh! G-good day to you. It i-is my pleasure m-meeting you Sir Ellixiel. I apologize for the behaviour of milady.---"

"Pardon my interruption but Cassandra do not forget that I am still here. And I had apologized already." I said childishly which made Ellixiel laugh.

"Ladies I think it is not the time for that. The Mistress summoned me here and I do not want to make her wait." He said and in a swift movement he jumped back on the horse again, looking like a knight.

"Do forgive me for I have to go now. However, we will meet again, Evangeline. I believe you should also head back. I have a strong feeling that the Mistress will look for you, pretty lady." He said then winked at me before he rode the horse in a full trot. "I like him." I said confidently to Cassandra and when I looked at her, she was not listening and was looking afar, to where Ellixiel was.

"Cassandra?"

"Oh, y-yes Miss?"

"Let us go back now. I want to find my mother and ask about Ellixiel." I said excitedly and when I met Cassandra's eyes, I saw something in her eyes which I can't fathom. It was so brief so I did not bother thinking about it.

"Yes, Let us now head back, Miss Evangeline."

Chapter 1: Dreams

"A dream is a wish your heart makes..."

-Walt Disney

The cold, dark walls and high ceiling are all I can see. I've been walking around in circles for hours trying to look for something or someone but there's nothing but empty corridors. I then saw a tall shadow from the dark part of the estate. I went to look for it but there was nothing but empty stones of walls. I just shrugged off the idea. I went on and on checking all the rooms but they're all empty. I tried to look for an exit but I couldn't find it. I'm already getting cold and exhausted since I've been walking endlessly and I'm just wearing my thin nightgown then suddenly I heard some faint movements and from the corner of my left eye, I noticed yet another shadow. I'm starting to get chills down my spine but still tried to put up a bravado and silently went to the direction of the shadow and was surprised to see the back of a tall figure of a boy walking away. He might be following and observing me for a while now but maybe found me uninteresting and decided to just go.

"Hey stop! Wait! Where are you going? I need help. Can you please tell me where's the way out of here?" I shouted at the boy's back. I can't understand why the heck I'm following him. I don't know him and I couldn't make out his face. All I see is his tall figure and his mysterious slightly long raven black hair which is hanging on his pale neck. I noticed that he is wearing a long black jacket and black pants. I don't understand why I feel magnetized to him. It made me curious of how he looks like so I called for him again but he just walked continuously fast.

"Please stop..." I whispered out of exasperation and stopped chasing after him. I was surprised when I heard him stop and I automatically lifted my eyes to see him standing three meters away from me. My eyes are wide open while anticipating to see him. My heart is beating so loud that it seems like it's going to explode anytime soon. The boy didn't move and just stayed there with his back on me quietly.

"Thanks..uum..ahh..I'm Zylen--

"I know who you are." He cut-off in a cold baritone voice.

I was dumbfounded not because he knew my name but because of his cold, low voice with a slight hint of loneliness or sorrow?

But why? I thought.

He sounded like he knew me for a long time and that he's regretful about something or of knowing me. I became confused and moved towards him. I reached for him but stopped midway when he slowly turned his head to face me. I can almost see the side of his right face when someone or something furry jumped on me straight on the face.

Ughhhh!!!!!!! I screamed soundlessly and fell off the bed.

"Where is he?!" I panicked and looked around. All I can see is my dark spacious room and my Persian cat Fluffy on my stomach.

"Just a dream huh.. a weird but vivid dream.." I sighed and rubbed Fluffy's thick fur.

"Fluffy why'd you wake me up? I nearly got to see his face. Don't do it again, OK? I'm really gonna hate you next time." I warned her not that I'm really capable of hating her. Fluffy is like a closest thing to a family. I have a close friend at school but that's it. I'm always alone at home. I couldn't even call it a home but a big empty manor that I inherited from my parents when they both passed away from a car accident when I was fifteen, a few months later after we've moved in. My parents had sold all their properties in LA where I was born and raised for fifteen years before the accident happened. They'd decided to buy the luxurious, old but grandiose manor in the city of Canterbury, England where my mom's hometown was and moved in. My parents told me that it's better to move there since my dad's business is mostly located there so that we can spend more time together. My parents actually met somewhere in Canterbury when my dad decided to put up his business near my mom's hometown. It was such a sweet story every time my mom talked about it and had dreamt to have that kind of dreamy love story. A pretty lady from Europe met a handsome American man. Such a lovely romance between two people of different continents but crossed paths and fell in love. Too bad for me, I'm left all alone now. My guardian, aunt Stephanie, my mom's younger sister is always away on a business trip so that leaves me alone with my attendant Mrs.Jenkins. She's a nice old lady and all but still I missed my parents.

"Ugh..enough with these petty sentiments." I murmured to myself and got out of bed. I went to my life-sized mirror and grabbed the post-it note sticking on it. It's from aunt Stephanie. It said:

"Zy, my dear, I'm so sorry, I could not possibly make it tomorrow. I know I had promised that we will go shopping together but I had an urgent call. I'm on my way to meet an important client in New York but I am sure to be there on your birthday. I left one of my credit cards on your desk last night. Ask your friend Natasha to go with you and buy anything you want.

Much love,

Aunt Stephanie

I sighed once more and folded the note and kept it in my drawer. I stood in front of the mirror and saw my lifeless feature. I'm too pale. Like a ghost. I was born and raised in LA but I didn't like to go out. I'm a total loner back then not that there is any big changes now but at least I've got to have at least one close friend now. Actually, I've got my pale complexion from my mom but when my mom moved to LA when she married my dad her complexion got a little darker and looked healthier unlike mine. I often say that I look like a zombie but Mrs.Jenkins often disagrees. She said that I have the most beautiful eyes and that I have pretty hair. My friend Natasha also keeps on convincing me that I'm gorgeous. I'm not oppose to it but I don't completely agree to it either. I looked at myself again in the mirror---I have almond-shaped light blue eyes, too light that they almost looked like gray, thin pointing nose, pale pinkish full lips, and honey-blonde wavy long hair.

"Hmm.. Not bad, I think, right Fluffy?" I said and Fluffy just grunted its agreement. I smiled faintly and got ready to go to school. Anytime soon, Mrs.Jenkins will fetch me in my room.

=====###=====

“Zy!” Natasha squeaked as always every time she sees me. She's such a bubbly person with a bright positive energy which is a complete opposite of me not that I dislike it. In fact, I love it because my friend somewhat influences me to be a little more positive even just a little is good enough for me already.

"Hey." I smiled timidly.

"Don't "Hey" me snob lady." Natasha teased laughing while grabbing my hand and led me to the bench nearby. It's our first day in school since Thanksgiving break and most of the students are everywhere chatting excitedly with their friends since the first bell hasn't rung yet. I came to school too early today.

"You seem excited about something today." I commented. Natasha's probably excited to see her ultimate crush Peter that's why she's beaming today. I thought smiling. Well, as for me, I don't have a crush. Honestly, I'm not sure if I'm a normal girl since I haven't had a crush since birth. If you call that normal, then I am probably normal. I've never gotten any interest in boys but then again after that dream maybe...

"Bloody Mary! Today is the start of our class again and it also means that today is also the day that I could get to see my love, Peter and the end of my boring vacation but of course I am excited, you silly gal.." Natasha exclaimed incredulously pulling me back from my thoughts. I laughed at her animated face. I couldn't help but laugh when I'm with Natasha. She's just too funny when she exaggerates about stuffs and her accent is just way too adorable. Well, I guess, I just have a thing for European accents. They're just too cute.

"Good girl. You should laugh every now and then. I would love to smile all the time if only I have those lovely dimples of yours." She winked at me teasingly. I just laughed in response.

"Anyhow, your 17th birthday is coming. I am so bloody excited to plan for your special day and I have----Natasha said excitedly but I wasn't listening. My attention was caught somewhere else----I actually spotted a tall guy across us standing by the tree, twenty meters away. I'm not sure if he is looking at me or not because he's wearing a pair of Wayfarer dark shades. However, I'm getting a hunch that he's looking at me. Call that an intuition or hallucination. I'm not quite sure but he looks somewhat familiar but I couldn't remember where and when I had met or seen him. He's not wearing our uniform so probably he's not a student of our school and a guy like him won't be left unnoticed. I'm pretty damn sure we're not just gonna cross paths without me, or shall I say, even me, a frigid girl, noticing his existence. I kept my gaze on him and tried to examine him---oblivious of my rude manners by staring at him. He has a mysterious yet striking look and he exudes a dark yet charismatic aura that had me captivated. I couldn't take my eyes off him.

"Zy, Are you still with me?" Natasha waved her hands in front of my face.

"Huh?" I replied mystified.

"Did you splash your mind out somewhere? I have been talking to you and yet you are not listening. What are you looking at?" She asked, sounding a little annoyed.

"I'm sorry Nat, I was looking at the guy---Heck, where did he go?" I burst out, surprised to see the boy gone from where he was standing.

"Who? a boy? Where is that lucky bastard whom has gotten your finical eyes?" She asked with a smirk. I ignored her teasing and just kept on looking for the mysterious guy but was nowhere to be found. Suddenly, it struck me----The guy in my dreams! He resembles him even without actually seeing his face in my dreams. My instinct is telling me that it's him but it's crazy. How can it actually be him? I'd rather believe I'm hallucinating.

"You didn't see the tall guy in black by the tree?" I confirmed.

"No. Now, who was that guy who has captured your heart?" She joked.

"You know what, it's nothing. Let's forget about it. It's too impossible----"

"Now, stop that nonsensical mumbling and tell me! Go on.." Natasha urged on.

"Um, well.. --"

"Stop fannying around and get on with it!" Hurry! Hurry!" Natasha urged on again.

I rolled my eyes and sighed. Natasha can be a real pushy sometimes.

"OK fine but don't you dare laugh." I warned and Natasha nodded in excitement.

"I dreamed about this mysterious guy last night--"

"Smashing! You--"

"Do you want me to continue or not?"

"Oh please proceed."

I rolled my eyes again but continued.

"So, as I was saying, I dreamed about a boy last night. In my dream, I was chasing after him but I couldn't seem to catch him. I also couldn't see his face but the weird thing is, he seemed to know me and I also think that I saw him just now. Well, that's just a dream and all, right?"

"Hmmm.. interesting.. You dreamed about a certain boy last night and you think you saw him just now, you say?"

"Yeah. weird, right? But I must be imagining things." I rattled on and stopped when I noticed that Natasha isn't reacting which was weird.

"Hey! It's more weird that you're not giving any violent reactions."

"I am utterly gobsmacked that I could not talk. Such fancy dreams you have there. That is what you get when you live in fantasies. You should try fantasizing about real boys like William." She said pointing her chin at the blonde boy on our right. He's handsome and popular in school but too cocky with too many honeybees around him especially Patrice who without reason hates me. I just shrugged my shoulders and went to our respective classrooms when the bell rang forgetting about the mysterious guy.

I'm looking for an interesting book in my favorite bookshop near my school when I noticed a familiar figure. He's standing across from the book lane where I'm at but when I blinked my eyes, he was gone.

"Ugh, I'm seeing things now. I must be getting crazy. I should've asked Natasha to go with me today." I muttered to myself shaking my head then hurried to buy the book that I've picked up a while ago and got out of the store. It's getting dark so I hurried back to my school premises. Mr.Pearce, my chauffeur will be fetching me there. He usually picks me up at 5:30 but I told him to pick me up at 6:30 today because I wanted to get a new book. I gazed at my old wrist watch---It was a birthday present from my mom. She told me to take care of it no matter what and I did---It says 6:20. Mr.Pearce must be on his way. I grabbed my phone from my sling bag and is about to call Mr.Pearce to ask him when I noticed an apparition across from the street. There were no people outside the school when I got there and knowing it only made me even more scared. I looked back again to where I last saw the apparition and it wasn't there.

"Hah! I was hallucinating again." I laughed nervously.

I continued to call Mr.Pearce but stopped and shrieked in fear when I saw the scary ghost-like figure in front of me ready to pounce at me. I ran instinctively but stumbled and fell on my face five meters away from the apparition. I tried to stand up but stopped when I felt something cold on my left shoulder then I felt an awfully excruciating pain and screamed. I was about to pass out when I saw another figure holding two luminous blades then I heard a chilling shriek behind me and then the pain was gone.

"Are you alright?" The stranger asked in a worried voice--He has such a dreamy voice and so I tried to look up to see his face but I was pulled into the darkness when I finally passed out.

=====###=====

"I said stop!" I demanded. I've been chasing after the same guy in the same cold empty corridors again. It feels like a de ja vu except for the fact that the boy is wearing a different shirt. The mysterious guy was walking fast and I'm following him--to my surprise he stopped.

"Turn around and face me." I said bravely.

I heard him hiss yet he obeyed and turned around slowly. I waited in anticipation and was dumbfounded. I'm damn well sure he's the guy I saw earlier at school and in the bookstore without the sunglasses covering his eyes. He has gorgeous green eyes and they were captivating and tantalizing me.

"I-it's y-you." I finally was able to speak and stared at him astonished. He stared back with his dark green piercing eyes which almost looked like black because of the darkness. I'm not quite sure but his intense eyes are looking at me with annoyance? But I could be imagining things again--Why would he be annoyed with me when he doesn't know me and this is just a dream? I dismissed my crazy thoughts.

"Um..H-hi! What's your name?" I stammered. The way he looked at me is kinda scary and dangerous yet there's this magnetic pull between us that's attracting me to him and I don't know why.

"It is not necessary for you to know." He responded in a cold and steely voice.

"Why not?"

"You have to go now and when you wake up, please do try to enjoy yourself while you can." He said meaningfully.

"You sounded like I'm gonna die soon..."

He didn't respond and just turned his back away from me.

"Wait! Why do I keep seeing you in my dreams?"

He turned and looked at me and for a brief moment, I was damn sure he looked at me with fondness? Affection? And longing? Like he knew me and that he wants to be with me? And the weirdest thing is that I somehow feel the same way but that is totally insane! This is getting weirder...and the guy is the weirdest! He was kinda annoyed a while ago and now he looks loving? What a complex personality!

"Hey---Ugh!--W-what a-are you doing? I muttered surprised by his sudden action---HE HUGGED ME!!! out of nowhere---What's worst, I can't help but liking it.

"Evangeline... I hope you can forgive me for a thousandth time.." He muttered in a tender voice.

Oh, how I like his voice. He has a sexy accent too. I thought and smiled but then the name he called me struck me. Evangeline?! Who the hell is that? I pushed him.

"Who's Evangeline? I'm Zylen and forgive you? What for? Who are you anyway?" I rattled.

"I wish I could tell you but you are better off without knowing it." He said gently then his steely expression went back. I was about to ask another question but he just turned his back on me.

"Wait a sec--Ughhhh!!! I didn't notice there was a big hole on the floor which was not there a while ago and now I'm falling really fast in to the darkness and then there's a short thud and a slight pain on my left arm. I slowly opened my eyes and voila! I'm in my room again facing the floor and it's already morning. Why do I have to fall on the floor every time I'm chasing that weird but gorgeous guy? I sighed and got up. I was about to go to the bathroom when I remembered what happened last night. Was it a dream? I then touched my left shoulder and it feels kinda sore. I hurriedly went to the front of my mirror and checked my shoulder. I was appalled to see a red marking in my shoulder blade.

"What the hell... It wasn't a dream after all! But how did I get home?" It's a question that Mr.Pearce can only answer. I rushed to my bathroom to washed up a bit and got dressed then hurriedly went downstairs to find Mr.Pearce.

Chapter 2: The haunting

"Beware as I may haunt you..."

-The Wraith

"Good morning, Missy. How are you feeling now?" Mr.Pearce greeted me when he saw me running towards the car, putting off the questioning about yesterday's incident because I'm getting late and I wouldn't want to be late in History. Not in History or I'll be a history.

"Morning, Mr.Pearce. I'm fine. Anyway, I'm sorry but please hurry. I'm running late." I replied and hurriedly went inside the car.

"Overslept again,  Missy?" He teased and started the car.

"Yeah. Had a bad dream again." If I can call it a bad dream. It's not actually a bad dream except for the falling part. "Anyway, How did I get home yesterday? I seemed to have passed out and couldn't remember how I got home." I fired the question right after I settled in comfortably and as the car is running smoothly.

"Well, I received a call from your school nurse that you fainted in front of your school premises so I came there to fetch you. You are lucky nothing bad happened to you and only got a few scratches. You should be careful next time."

"Yeah.. Anyway, Did you know who brought me to the clinic?"

"No, I'm not so sure but the nurse said something about a transfer student brought you to her when he found you outside lying on the street." I just nodded and touched the little scratches on my knees. Did I really see what I saw yesterday or was it my wild imaginations playing tricks on me again? But the red mark on my shoulder is a proof that it wasn't just my imagination. Someone or something supernatural grabbed my left shoulder and somewhat burned my skin. I can still feel the soreness of it. The question is, who saved me? A new student this second quarter? I didn't hear about having a late transfer student. It couldn't be him, right? I don't know why I've been dreaming about him lately and why it seems like he's following me in reality now and why I'm seeing things. The only person who can explain what's going on is the guy in my dreams. But how can I do that? But if the one I saw yesterday is the same person in my dreams then maybe I can talk to him and ask about what's happening but deep down I am wishing that he'll tell me I was just imagining things. The thing is, I don't know how to find him. If only I could see him again. Oh what a real bummer...

====###=====

I hurriedly entered the classroom out of breath because of running. I'm five minutes late and my History teacher, Mr.Thompson is not a great fan of tardy students and that's what I am at the moment. I was quite surprised to see that our teacher seemed to be late for the first time in the history of my senior year in History class. I went to my seat at the back beside Natasha who's waving at me.

"Hi pretty face." William said grinning as soon as I sat down and winked at me. His seat is next to mine on my right side and next to him is Patrice who's glaring at me at the moment with her dagger-like eyes. I just ignored him and lowered my head as usual to avoid any fight with Patrice. She's a die-hard and crazy in-love with William and I don't want to get involved with them.

"William called you pretty and you just ignored him. I pity him. And you are late." Natasha whispered teasingly. I just shrugged which made Natasha rolled her eyeballs at me.

"What happened to Mr.Thompson anyway? This is the first time he's not on time." I asked instead, changing the topic.

"He's not late, silly. Have you not known our dear Mr.Thompson yet? I think he has never been late in his entire existence. I'm not quite sure of the whole details but the principal went here earlier to announce that Mr.Thompson will no longer be teaching us temporarily or permanently that I am not sure of. He has some important matters to attend to so it seems."

"Oh that's some news."

"But here's the most wonderful news---"

"We have a young and gorgeous substitute teacher?" I cut her off jokingly.

"How did you know that? I just heard about it today." She asked wide-eyed.

"Really? I was right? I was just kidding you know."

"It's no kidding, Zy! All the girls here are dying to see him and he is so bloody late." She squeaked, clapping her hands excitedly. I just smiled at her, not really interested. "And one more thing, I also heard that there's also a new transfer student."

"That I know." I blurted out unconsciously.

"Really? So, have you seen him? When? I heard that he is also gorgeous! Oh! My high school life is getting exciting!" Natasha said excitedly with a giggle looking like she has forgotten her all-time crush Peter already.

They were in the middle of chatting when the door opened and two gorgeous tall men entered the room. Suddenly it became quiet and all the girls' eyes in the room including mine are wide open staring at either of the two men. The other man looks like he is in his early thirties and the other one must be the same age as me. The truth is, I think that I'm the most shocked not because they're both damn gorgeous but because I was silently wishing to see him and now I'm actually seeing him.

So, he's the transfer student? The guy in my dreams and the one who probably saved me! It was really him after all.. and never did I think that wearing our school uniform could be that sexy..

"Good morning everyone. I'm Rafael Wright. My apologies for being tardy on our first meeting. The principal and I had some discussion about some matters regarding the substitution of this class. And this is my nephew, Ellis Wright. Ellis? Say something.."

"Nice to meet you." He said nonchalantly.

"Please get along well with him. He is a shy boy after all." Mr. Wright said smiling and the whole class laughed but the boy called Ellis wasn't smiling at all. In fact, his eyes are roaming around the room like he is looking for something or someone? And his eyes finally stopped.. They stopped at my direction! Our eyes locked for a short time then he looked away when his uncle called his attention.

"Ellis go find an empty seat---" His uncle didn't even finish speaking when he moved briskly and to my astonishment, he sat on the empty seat behind me.

"Seems like my nephew knows how to find a good seat." Mr. Wright said jokingly and my classmates laughed again except for Patrice' girls and William.

"Well, I hope to have a pleasant relationship with you all." Mr. Wright said flashing a dashing smile to everyone and gave me a fleeting glance. It was so fast that I wasn't sure if it was really for me.

"It's a pleasure meeting you Mr.Wright and I also wish to have a pleasant relationship with you and.. Ellis. I'm sure History class will be so much fun." Anna said in a meaningful and seductive way then she winked at Ellis which made me want to snort---Anna is one of Patrice' barbie girlfriends. They're popular, pretty, sexy, and mean and I don't care. Now, I can't understand why I suddenly feel annoyed with her actions and worst I hated all the girls drooling at Ellis. Actually, almost all the girls are fascinated on both of them. Well, I can't blame them. They're like models who came out of some high-end glossy magazine.

"Sure, sweetheart. I certainly hope so." Mr. Wright replied in an amused smile.

I was very curious about Ellis' reaction so I turned my head to peek when I almost screamed out of surprise to see him looking at me as well. I was caught and felt my cheek burning in embarrassment. Was he looking at me the whole time? And the weird thing is that it feels like I had looked at those dark green eyes before and not only in my dreams but a long time ago. They're so uncannily familiar.

"Hey, Zy! Do you like him that much?" Natasha whispered and elbowed me to get my attention.

"H-huh?" I jolted blushing and tore my gaze away from him. Natasha just giggled when she saw my reaction.

"So, are there any questions?" Mr.Wright suddenly asked.

"How old are you?" Melissa asked flashing her flirtatious smile. She's also one of Patrice circle of friends---Now I'm convinced that Birds of the same feathers flock together.

"Old enough to be your History teacher, Sweetie." He answered with a smile.

"Do you have a girlfriend?" Melissa asked again looking thrilled.

"That's a secret sweetheart."

"Then how about Ellis?" Anna prompted smiling curiously.

"Why don't you ask him, sweetie? Now, let us begin. Please open your books now on the last discussion you had with Mr.Thompson." Mr.Wright said smiling.

He seems to be enjoying the attention he's getting from his pretty students. He doesn't even look like a teacher. I stared at him. He's wearing a black v-necked sweatshirt---Which somehow shows his collarbone and muscular chest. He paired it with dark jeans and black leather boots and without his glasses, he looked more like a bad-ass college student than a teacher.

Hmmm.. having a gorgeous History teacher is not a bad thing. But I'm not interested in Mr.Wright, what I'm interested about is why Ellis is in my dreams and why is he suddenly here? How did he save me?

"Zy, you have an intense look towards Mr.Wright as well. Which one do you like more?" Natasha teased me again and I'm somewhat bothered and embarrassed that Ellis might have heard it.

"Stop it." I said seriously.

"Alright, let's talk later." She said, giggling.

The class continued in a normal way but for me it was still surreal. How can a guy in my dreams be in the same class as mine? And he is just behind me for Pete's sake! I was tensed the whole hour and was thankful when the bell rang. I hurriedly went to my Biology class. It's a good thing Natasha is not in my Biology class. She will have to wait later before she can tease me again.

======###=====

"Alright class, find a new lab partner and begin right away." Mrs.Peterson instructed. I looked around to find a partner and saw Chris approaching me. He's a smart boy and seems nice so it would be good if we'll become lab partners.

"Hi! Do you have a lab partner already?"

"Yes, she does."

I was surprised to see Ellis when I turned around. He's in my Biology class too?!

"Oh, that's too bad." Chris said and went away to find a new lab partner.

"Why did you tell him I have a lab partner?" I asked a bit annoyed of his actions. As much as I want to question him about a lot of things, I also feel bothered because of his presence.

"Because you have." He replied nonchalantly.

"What? Who?"

"Me." He said with a smirk and it irritated me that he is acting coolly while my heart is beating uncontrollably.

"Since when?" I asked stubbornly.

"Since now. Why do you ask so many questions? Are you a journalist? Just get on with it, will you not?" He said mockingly and it made my blood boiled out of proportion.

"What?! You---"

"Miss Hayes, What seems to be the problem between you and..Mr.Wright, is that correct?"

"That's right Mrs.Peterson. My name is Ellis Wright and there's no problem with my lab partner. We're just in the middle of discussing about the lab activity for today right, Zylen?" He said, smiling charmingly for the first time that I couldn't think well and just agreed to whatever he is saying.

"Y-yeah."

"Alright then be done with your lab activity." Mrs.Peterson said and went back to what she's been doing.

“Yes, ma'am.” We chorused.

=======#######======

We're in the middle of our lab activity but I can't focus on it. I wanted to ask so many questions to Ellis but I don't know what and how to start. He might think that I'm weird and just laugh at me. I sighed instead.

"Is there something wrong?"

"Huh?" I was surprised to hear his concerned voice. He seemed to have some kind of a split personality. One moment, he acts coldly, then he will act like he is really concerned about me. What a complex person!

"You seem to be worried about something." He said, staring at me with those hypnotizing green eyes like an emerald shining brightly.

"Would it hurt you if I say, I'm bothered by your presence?" I blurted out without thinking.

"Definitely." He said smiling faintly.

Ugh.. Why do you even have that gorgeous smile? I couldn't think well!

"Do you think I'm weird?" I asked out of the blue which made him chuckle. It's a good thing Mrs.Peterson is busy and didn't seem to notice them.

"Somewhat you are."

"I thought so too." I sighed.

"Hey, what's the matter?" He asked laughing softly. It's really mesmerizing to hear his laugh.

"Have we met before?" I asked all of a sudden and his smile faded away and somehow it made me regret that I'd asked him that, but I need to know.

"No." He said steely.

"How about yesterday? I think I saw you and in my dreams---"

"What nonsense are you talking about?" He sounded angry this time but I could see it in his eyes that he is hiding something very important from me. I was about to say something when the bell rang. He hastily grabbed our lab sheet and submitted it to Mrs.Peterson then he went out of the room without looking at me.

He's definitely hiding something and I'm gonna find out what it is. I said to myself determined to get the truth out of him.

================#####============

"Wow, Zy you look stunning! That's definitely the dress." Natasha exclaimed nodding her approval while looking at my dress. We're in my aunt Stephanie's favorite boutique downtown. We went here after school and now I'm fitting in the dress that Natasha has selected for my masquerade ball this coming Saturday. My birthday is originally on Sunday but aunt Stephanie will be flying back to New York for another business trip. So, we decided to have it the day before my birthday so my aunt can be there to celebrate it. I was forced to agree to have a masquerade ball because Natasha insisted it would be fun and since I'm a shy person, it would benefit me having to wear a beautiful mask and would give me more courage to socialize with the guests.

"Are you sure? You know I'm not used to wearing this kind of clothing."

"Of course! That blue dress complements your blue eyes. It's perfect, Zy. Trust me."

"Okay. How about you? Pick yours. It's aunt Stephanie's treat since you acted as the event coordinator for my birthday in her stead." I said smiling.

"Really?! aunt Stephanie surely is an angel!." She blurted excitedly and went to look for a dress.

It was past seven when we finished our shopping and Natasha went on ahead since her mom needs her help about something. It was okay since Mr.Pearce will be fetching me at any moment. I've already called him and he's on his way.

"Seems like it might take some time before Mr.Pearce will arrive." I sighed and went at the nearest bench to wait for him there. I decided to just read the book that I've bought last time. Then I remembered the scary apparition. I looked around nervously. It's already dark but there are still some people everywhere. I felt relieved and opened the book to start reading. It was just a few minutes past when I felt a sudden chill at the back of my neck. I immediately turned around and was too shocked to scream when I saw the dark scary apparition approaching me. It looks like a dark smoke forming a skeleton-like face covered with a dark cloak all over its body. It's making a horrid sound like it wants to eat me. I instinctively stood up and looked for help but the people I saw a while ago were all gone and it feels like I'm in a different dimension. An odd feeling of no air but still I can breathe and the sound of my voice is gone! I can't scream even though the scary unknown creature is approaching me while floating in the air. It made me even more scared and at that moment all I think about is Ellis and tried my hardest to call his name in my head.

Ellis! Please help me! I shouted in my head. I know it's useless. He can't possibly hear me but to my astonishment, all of a sudden, a bright light appeared like a portal was opened and there stood, Ellis holding two luminous blade just like the last time he saved me. It was really indeed Ellis who saved me. No doubt about that now. He ran towards the apparition so fast I can't see what's happening. All I can hear is the screeching sound of pain then in a second, it was gone. I looked around but the apparition disappeared already and now I can see some people not far from me roaming around the area.

"W-what's g-going on? Who a-are you?" I asked in a shaky voice. I still can't believe what just happened.

"Are you alright?" Ellis asked with a worried look. I was too scared to speak and just stared at him with a stunned and horrified expression. He instinctively went to hug me when he noticed I'm shivering from fear.

"It's alright, love. Everything is alright now." He said in a hush tone to try to calm me down and it worked. Now, I feel relaxed and my mind is starting to work.

"What did just happen?! How? You were so fast! Are you a vampire?"

"What?! Did you hit your head?" He said laughing.

"No, but I saw you moved so fast---"

"That's what you get from reading this foolish vampire book." He grumbled picking up the book that I've dropped a while ago.

"But---"

"If I'm a vampire, I had bitten you already since you look yummy." He said teasingly and stared at my bared neck. I blushed furiously at his joke and looked for my scarf. I must have dropped it when I tried to run away. The temperature dropped since winter has started and now I feel cold after the adrenaline rush. Ellis chuckle then I was surprised yet again when he moved closer to me and wrapped my scarf around my neck. He must have picked it up somewhere.

"Don't show your neck so recklessly to me. I might not be able to stop myself and bite you since I'm a vampire." He continued teasing me and when he saw me blushed again he laughed so hard that even though he saved me, I wanted to punch him.

"Can you tell me what's going on and how'd you know that I was in danger?" I asked again in a serious tone of voice. He sighed and to my astonishment, he kissed me on the lips! It was just brief and light but my brain seemed to have malfunctioned and coudn't react to the situation. Today, is really full of surprises and my instinct is telling me that I will have more surprises to come in a not so far away future.

"I'll tell you the next time we meet, love." He said and winked at me then he ran and disappeared in the blink of an eye.

"Wait--You jerk! Don't call me love! Ugh! You even stole my first kiss at this not so romantic place! I'm gonna beat you up the next time we meet, I tell you! How could you even leave me here?!" I grumbled to myself and was astonished to hear Mr.Pearce calling from behind me. I didn't notice him calling me because I was too focused at my irritation towards Ellis. He probably knew that Mr.Pearce was coming and just left me knowing I will be safe.

That idiot Ellis! Is he thinking Mr.Pearce can save me from that monster? He's fifty-nine for crying out loud!

"Missy, who are you talking to? Are you fighting with someone? Although, I don't see anyone here though.." Mr.Pearce asked with a furrowed look.

"Oh no I'm not. I was just practicing my spiel for our play in school." I fabricated and urge him to just go home. All these happenings made me so tired.

Chapter 3: Hide-and-seek

"I was hiding my heart and you were hiding yours too and we played hide and seek together and both of us lost..."

-Terra Elan Macvoy

I'm in a bad mood the whole day. Ellis didn't go to school today right when I needed him. I didn't even fall asleep last night because of the incident that had happened yesterday. I was really dying to see him and ask him about it but the thoughtless jerk didn't show up at all. It's already my last class but I couldn't even catch a tiny glimpse of his silhouette. He probably did it on purpose not to show his face in school to avoid me.

Ugh! What a lying bastard! He said he'll tell me when we meet, but when does he plan to?

"Hi there, pretty one!" A familiar voice, but not the voice that I want to hear at the moment, spoke behind me. I'm at my locker right now, putting all my textbooks.

"Hi." I said out of courtesy. As much as possible I don't wanna be seen talking to him. He is very popular in school and Patrice will freak out if she'll see us together and worst talking to each other.

"You seem troubled, are you alright?" He looked worried but I just wanna run away from him already.

"I'm good. Umm, I have to go to my next class. So, see yah around." I said in a hurry and turned to walk away when I suddenly bumped on to someone.

"Watch where you're going wench!" Patrice hissed at me spitefully.

Oh-ooh.. speaking of the devil..

"Stop that Patrice, that's childish." William chided which made Patrice snort and threw me a dagger-like gaze. If a mere stare can kill, I have died already.

"Fine. Let's go girls." She said and moved away from me. She went to William and clung to him like a snake.

"See you around, Zylen. And thanks for the invitation. I've received it last week but I forgot to tell you. I will definitely come." He said.

"Yeah, thanks."

"Hmp, me and the girls will come too since William will be there, lucky you."

"We are not really expecting you to come Patrice but since you will, I am sure Zylen will be greatly indebted to you. But surely I will be delighted if you will not. After all, the invitation was sent due to Zylen's courtesy since the kind principal is your mother." Natasha said sarcastically. I didn't notice that she came to my rescue. As always Natasha is my defender from whoever tries to bully me especially Patrice and her group.

"Are you her mother? Well, you look like one." Patrice fired back.

"Old hag!" Chanted the girls in unison.

"Come on, girls stop brawling at each other." William said getting annoyed. He might be cocky at times but his not a bad guy at all, I guess. I smiled at him shyly and he winked at me. Thanked God, Patrice didn't see that.

"Let's go." He pulled Patrice and moved away with her. All the other girls followed them but Anna purposely slowed down and whispered something before she go.

"Stay away from Ellis. He is mine." She stated smugly and walked away.

You can have him all you want. Hmp! I screamed in my thought. Who would've want a guy like him anyway?

"Get lost barbie doll." Natasha hissed.

"Hey, it's okay. Don't mind them."

"Those silly girls, when are they going to grow up?"

"Hey, I said it's okay. And don't worry, you don't look like an old hag. Well.. maybe.. just a little.." I teased and ran away laughing.

"What?! You ungrateful girl! Wait till I catch you!" Natasha shouted and chased after me. They ran on the hallway and one of the teachers saw us and scolded us but we just giggle and went to our respective classes.

I wished that our friendship will last forever...

=======####======

It was already Thursday but there was still no Ellis. I wondered what really happened to him and started to get worried. What if those creatures who chased me before got him? I felt a sudden chill just by remembering that incident. But his uncle doesn't seem worried---I'm in History class right now and Mr.Wright is discussing about something I don't know since my mind is wandering off somewhere---Anyway, Ellis seemed skillful in fighting and wouldn't be defeated that easily, would he?

Ah! I will ask Mr.Wright about Ellis since he is after all his uncle. He would probably know how and where is Ellis. That's a good idea! I thought.

"Miss Hayes, are you with us?" Mr.Wright has been calling my attention but I didn't hear it until Natasha elbowed me on my side.

"Uhh.. Y-yes..?" I stammered. I feel embarrassed because my classmates are staring at me and now they're laughing at my dazed expression. I was saved by the bell when it rang and everyone rushed to go to their next class but I stayed.

"You can go ahead, Nat. I have to ask Mr.Wright about something."

"What about? Don't tell me it is a confession?" She teased.

"That's absurd. Go on, I'll see you during lunch." I shoo her away and Natasha went away laughing lightly.

I then slowly approached Mr.Wright.

"Umm.. Excuse me, Mr.Wright.." I started shyly.

"Oh Alice I didn't know you are still here."

"A-alice?" I'm--"

"Alice in the wonderland, silly."

"H-huh? I don't understand." I got confused and to my surprise Mr.Wright laugh.

"It seems that you have failed to see the humor in it." He said still laughing. "I wanted to say that you are like Alice since during class, your mind seemed to have gone somewhere. In short, you are daydreaming in class."

"Uhh.." Is all I can say. I didn't know Mr.Wright is bad at jokes. I thought.

"So, what can I do for you Miss Hayes?"

"Well, u-umm.. I want to ask about.. Ellis.. Is he okay? He's been absent since last Tuesday." I blushed when Mr.Wright smiled meaningfully.

"I did not know that the two of you became this close for you to be this worried. Perhaps your mind was wandering during class because of him?" He teased.

"No, of course not! I m-mean.. I was just wondering since we're lab partners in Biology.." I said defensively.

"Is that so?" He asked incredulously.

"Y-yeah."

"Very well then, he caught a cold but nothing serious. He will probably be here tomorrow. Nothing to worry about." He said smiling.

"I see.. Thanks Mr.Wright."

"My pleasure." He smiled.

"Oh, anyway, I forgot to give you and Ellis this invitation for my birthday this coming Saturday. It's a masquerade ball. I've already invited everyone in school but I'm not sure if they'll all come. So, I'll greatly appreciate it if you and Ellis could come." I said timidly and handed him a glossy envelop with the glittery card inside.

"That soon..." He whispered almost inaudible.

"What?"

"Nothing." He chuckled lightly. He's kinda weird but then so is his nephew. "We will definitely come. It is your special day after all." He added meaningfully. "Thanks for the invitation but Miss Hayes are you not a bit late in your next class?"

"Oh! yeah.. I'll go ahead then Mr.Wright." I said in a hurry and ran towards my next class.

Hmmm... Mr.Wright is acting strange or is he just normally weird? Well, I don't care...

====#####=====

I'm really pissed off. Ellis didn't attend our Biology class again and left me to do all the lab activities by myself. It would have been alright if he is still sick but I saw him on the hallway earlier and the worst when he saw me, he acted like he didn't see me and hastily went to the opposite direction. He is obviously avoiding me and probably having a cold was just an alibi and since he can't continue to slack off, he has no choice but to come to school. Mr.Wright must have talked to him.

I'm really gonna catch him---

"Incoming!" Someone shouted and before I can react the ball had already hit my head. It wasn't strong but because of the impact I lost my balance and fell on my bottom. We are playing volleyball at the moment but because I was busy thinking about Ellis, I didn't notice that the game has already started. I heard the girls laugh, most especially the group of Patrice. They're in my PE class too and that's why I hate Friday because every Friday means PE and I don't like PE and all the stuffs that involves strenuous activities plus the fact that Patrice and her friends are here as well.

"Zy, are you okay?" Natasha asked concerned, lending me a hand. I'm lucky Natasha is in this class too.

"Are you alright Miss Hayes? or Do you want to go to the infirmary?" Miss Hudson asked grimly. I'm not sure if she's worried or angry at me. She's a scary-looking woman. No wonder she's still unmarried.

"Yeah, I'm OK, ma'am." I said then took Natasha's hand and got up. I looked up and accidentally saw Ellis seating on the bench at the left wing of the gymnasium. He was staring at me with a worried look? But I almost curse when Ellis started laughing. The girls also looked up curiously at him.

Ellis you bastard! You dare laugh at me when you didn't even kept your promise! Are you playing Hide-and-seek with me?!

"Hey, no boys allowed in here. Boys' PE class is at the gym next door." Miss Hudson informed him with a stern look.

"Yes ma'am." He replied courtly keeping his face straight to stifle a laugh and started to head for the door when Anna spoke.

"Are you here to see me, Darling?" She asked daringly.

"Nah, sorry to disappoint you, Sweetheart." He mocked. Then he went out in a haste.

I smiled secretly when I saw Anna's annoyed face.

=====####======

"I'll go on ahead, Zy. I have to go home first to pick up my stuffs at home for the sleepover tonight." Natasha informed me while we're changing back into our school uniforms after the shower. It's Natasha's last class but unfortunately for me, I still have Latin until five-thirty.

"Yeah, See you tonight."

"Good luck with Latin." She taunted giggling. Natasha knew how I hate that subject. I also wonder why I even have to study that but aunt Stephanie said that I should try learning it because I might be surprised one day that it's quite useful.

"Ha-Ha! very FUNNY... I'll see you later." I said sardonically but Natasha just laughed and headed for the door after saying goodbye. Natasha will sleep at my house tonight since tomorrow is gonna be my party and there will be a lot of preparations to be done since I've agreed to have a grandiose celebration. We needed to prepare earlier since Natasha decided to be the event coordinator, she has to do tons of stuffs like calling the flower shops for some flower decorations, confirm the band that will play the songs, some light decors, Catering service, etc. I told her to just leave it and just hire an event coordinator but she insisted to do it herself. We even debated about it but Natasha's dream is to become an event coordinator in the future so she wanted to have a practical experience and my birthday is her chosen first subject which made me a bit worried. It's my first big celebration after I moved to England and I'm kinda nervous that it might turned out bad. However, I have to put my trust on Natasha and let her play the role of a Godmother on my 17th birthday. I thought smiling.

====###====

I'm on my way to Latin when I saw Ellis on the hallway. Gotcha! I was about to jump on him but suddenly stopped and hid behind the wall when I heard him talking to someone.

Who's he talking to? Mr.Wright?

"When will you tell her? It is inevitably near and she has to know for her to be prepared."

What are they talking about? and who are they talking about? I can't hear them well since I'm a bit far from them.

"What is there to be prepared when I cannot change anything. It is indeed inevitable as you say and I do not have the power to stop this Fate----"

What did he say? Fate? and wait, why is it suddenly quiet, Did they finish talking? I peeked again to see if they're gone when I almost screamed out of surprise to see Ellis standing in front of me, his face expressionless.

"For crying out loud, don't do that!" I hissed at him. "You're like a stalker or something suddenly popping out of nowhere."

"You dare say that when you are the one who's eavesdropping on us." He said seriously and when I stared at his eyes, it was cold and lacking of emotion. I don't know if he is angry at me or if he doesn't care at all. Ellis is really a complicated person to deal with.

"Okay, I'm sorry..I didn't mean to eavesdrop, I just happened to hear it but not that I understand any of what you're talking about with your uncle. For all I know, you were maybe talking about family stuff or whatever." I reasoned out indistinctly.

"Give the girl a rest, Ellis. She is just worried about you, are you not Alice?" Mr.Wright jested joining our conversation.

"Y-yeah, No! I mean, yeah." I mumbled again. "And please don't call me Alice." I pouted but Mr.Wright just chuckled. When I looked up at Ellis again, he looks confused and somewhat annoyed by the way his eyebrows crossed.

"Anyway, we need to talk." I said facing Ellis again after remembering the incident.

"I would love to stay and chat but I still have a class---"

"Oh! Holy cow! I totally forgot about it. I'm almost late. I gotta go Mr.Wright, and YOU." I said pointing my finger at Ellis. "Remember what you've promised." I said and left Ellis speechless and ran towards the second floor.

Mrs.Wilson will make me apologize in Latin if I'll be late. But before I was able to completely leave, I heard Mr.Wright said something to Ellis.

"Meeting different versions of her must be quite thrilling..." Mr.Wright stated meaningfully.

"That's an understatement." I heard Ellis replied coolly. I didn't bother since I couldn't relate to what they're talking about.

What a bunch of weirdos. I thought and hurried to my last class.

As I was heading to the classroom I suddenly realized how I have changed. Talking to Ellis in that kind of manner is new to me but somehow it feels like it's the most normal thing to do---Except from Natasha and my attendants, Mrs.Jenkins and Mr.Pearce which I feel comfortable talking with, I'm too shy and uncomfortable talking to other people, even to aunt Stephanie. But meeting Ellis made me want to express myself more. It's like, we've known each for a long time which is hard for me to comprehend. This intense feeling that is pulling me towards him. I maybe acting annoyed about his nonchalant behavior but deep down inside, I feel excited and exhilarated whenever he is around whether he is angry or impassive as long as he is around.

===###===

I was indeed lucky because I came in just in time for the class. However, to my surprise for a hundredth time, Ellis entered the room five minutes late looking without a care in the world. Our eyes met briefly and he seemed not surprise to see me. We're classmates in three subjects already and I'm not sure if it's just mere coincidence.

"Late comer, you were absent last Wednesday and now you are late?" Mrs.Wilson commented calmly.

"Pardon me, Mrs.Wilson, I had a minor distraction... I mean disruption on my way here. He said coolly while giving me a swift glance. I frowned at him.

Jerk! I wanted to utter but at the same time I feel happy seeing his handsome face again.

"Well, in my class, I have a rule. If you are tardy, you have to apologize in Latin and if you cannot say it properly you cannot enter my class until you say it correctly." Mrs.Wilson said seriously.

Does he even know how to speak Latin? I doubted.

"Me paenitet." He said fluently to my surprise. Mrs.Wilson was also surprised but smiled at him.

"et properatus." Mrs.Wilson said "Well done" in Latin and gestured for him to seat down.

It was just a simple phrase but his diction was good. Ellis really never stops to amaze me and...annoy me. In fact, he went to seat quite far from me--like I'm some kind of a disease---at the other side and next to a beautiful brunette which I can't remember the name. The girl brightened when she saw Ellis seating next to her and started chatting quietly.

Bastard! It's really obvious that he is avoiding me. But why are you flirting with that girl?! I can't stop myself from feeling a tinge of jealousy and when Ellis look up to glance at me I wasn't able to hide the look of hurt in my face so I swiftly tore my eyes off him and when the bell rang, I hurriedly went out without glancing at him. The whole period sucked and all I think about is going home. I didn't even bother thinking of questioning him. I need to cool off first before I face him or I might cry in front of him and that's something I won't allow him to see. But then again, Ellis is quick in running away from me. He usually just vanished into thin air whenever I want to pursue him.

"What a weird jerk..." I unconsciously blurted out.

"What was that, Missy? Did you say something?" Mr.Pearce inquired. We're already on our way home.

"It was nothing, Mr.Pearce." I sighed.

"If you are troubled, do not hesitate to talk to me. As I have told you before, you are like a daughter to me." He said sincerely.

He was right, Mr.Pearce treats me like a daughter since he only has a son, who already got married and is now leaving in a different city. His wife had already passed away so he decided to work continuously with us as our family driver but since aunt Stephanie is always not around, and usually drives her own car when she is, he drives me to school or to places I wanna go most of the time. He and Mrs.Jenkins, a spinster, are my next to a kin.

"Yes, I will.. thanks a lot." I said smiling. "So, anyway, do you believe in supernatural creatures or magic, Mr.Pearce?" I asked out of the blue.

"Why do you ask?" He asked and looked at me in the rear mirror.

"Nothing. Just curious, that's all."

"Well, I do not actually believe in it myself but when I was a boy, my grandmother used to tell me and my cousins some tales back in the old days."

"Really? About what?" I asked curiously.

"Well, they are just stories though."

"Oh please tell me, Mr.Pearce." I waited expectantly."

"Alright, it is actually about a community of witches or whatever they call themselves who used to leave in this city. However, there are varieties of stories and rumors about them but If I remember correctly, there was once a maiden who was engaged to be married to a young and handsome man but it was believed that another girl fell in love with the young man that led to a tragedy. I do not exactly know the whole story but rumor has it that the engaged maiden was a witch but, a beautiful witch and they said that she perhaps used a spell on the poor lad to fall in love with her but the other girl who also loved the man killed her to stop her." Mr.Pearce narrated reminiscently.

"That was tragic..." I commented and felt a twinge of chilling sensation.

"It was just a story, Missy. Do not take it seriously." Mr.Pearce said smiling.

"Yeah..."

Chapter 4: Masquerade

"We are so accustomed to masquerade ourselves before others that we end by deceiving ourselves..."

-Francois de la Rochefoucauld

Natasha was discussing something to me about the party tomorrow---We're in my room right now, having a little slumber party just the two of us---when my vision became hazy and I suddenly felt like being dragged away somewhere in the dark. I blinked my eyes twice. It is dark. Then suddenly, flashes of images came to my vision---images of Ellis but somehow he looked different. His hairstyle looked old-fashioned but handsome no less. Another image of him came and shocked me---Ellis and a girl that looked exactly just like me except for the hair color. The girl has a long raven black hair hanging on her hip and her clothing was like from the 14th or 15th century aristocrat ladies---They're holding hands. They looked like lovers but why does the girl looked like me? We can be twins except for the fact that the girl looked stunningly beautiful... an enchanting beauty to be exact and I know that I'm no beauty.

How can two people looked so damn alike yet so different?

The odd images kept flooding my vision---Ellis and my-look-alike girl are dancing intimately and looking beautiful together. I can't see their faces since they're wearing fancy gold Venetian masks that partly covered their faces but oddly I know who they are. “Evangeline...” I heard him whispered---when Natasha pulled me back to my senses.

"Aw! Why'd you do that for? I jolted and touched my right cheek. Natasha slapped my cheek a little too forceful.

"Oh! I'm sorry, Zy... You were not yourself just now... It was sort of creeping me out.." She said in a worried voice. "Your eyes even looked so dark while looking at me expressionless and I called your name many times but you just continued staring at me blankly." She continued.

What were those images that I've seen just now and why am I seeing them? I asked myself confused.

I don't know what just happened to me but I'm not surprised anymore. After all that has happened to me recently regarding a scary supernatural creature who chased me, any more weird stuffs wont surprise me the least. Well, I hope so...

"What happened to you just now? Are you alright?" Natasha asked still worried when I didn't answer right away.

"Nothing to worry about. I think I'm just tired and sleepy." I made up. I can't tell Natasha what I've been through. I don't wanna involve her in any of it. I also don't wanna worry her or even scare her and worse, she might think I'm losing it.

"Are you sure?" I nodded. "Alright, let's sleep then. Let's have some beauty rest since tomorrow will be a long day." She said and motioned me to sleep.

"Yeah.." I agreed but before I get on the bed, I saw Fluffy, on her own small bed not very far from mine, staring at me strangely with a knowing eyes that I can't quite apprehend. I went to her and stroked her fur but Fluffy seemed agitated about something. "Hey. What's wrong, Fluffy? Are you hungry?" I asked, still stroking her thick fur.

"Hey Zy, leave the cat alone. She probably wants to sleep too. Come on, go to bed. You need to look gorgeous tomorrow." Natasha said sounded a little displeased. I just smiled and got up but Fluffy made a hissing sound at Natasha's direction, showing her displeasure to my friend.

"So, I guess the feeling is mutual." I denoted jestingly looking at Natasha and Fluffy. I can't comprehend why the two of them seemed to hate each other unknowingly.

"You should know that I hate cats. I don't even understand why you like her." She said sulking.

"Yeah, I get it." I giggled. "Night, Fluffy. Don't hate Natasha. She's my friend, OK?" I said and went to bed.

Fluffy is such a weird cat but I love her. I found her almost two years ago right after I moved in to the old manor with my late parents. I was roaming around the big house when she jumped on me from the window. I had asked the caretaker, Mrs.Jenkins about its owner but she said that it's just a stray cat so I asked my parents to adopt it and thankfully they'd agreed. In my life, there are just a few people that I care about; Natasha, Mrs.Jenkins, Mr.Pearce, aunt Stephanie, my cat Fluffy, and now, Ellis..

Ellis.. What's your real identity? What're you thinking? What're you hiding from me? Are you coming to my party tomorrow? I hope so... and who is Evangeline? I remembered Ellis called me that name in my dream before. I fell asleep thinking about Ellis and the girl who resembled me so much.

I woke up by the sound of cars pulling over on our driveway and I noticed that Natasha had already gotten up. I checked my clock on my bedside table. It says; Eleven past thirty-five. It's already late. It's not usual for me to wake up this late but I must've been tired. I lazily got out of bed and went through the french door to the balcony. My room is facing the front and entrance of the manor so I can see the people bustling about below. I spotted Natasha giving orders to the men carrying some decors, tables, and other stuffs for decorations. I smiled. Natasha really did play her role as an event coordinator for today. A light knock from my door called my attention then Mrs.Jenkins entered the room with a bright smile, holding a breakfast tray on her hands. She carefully placed it on my tea table near the french door.

"Hello dear, although it is not your actual birthday, I want to wish you; Happy birthday!" Mrs.Jenkins greeted enthusiastically and went to hug me. I hugged back jovially.

"Thanks Mrs.Jenkins." I responded cheerfully.

"Oh you are all grown up now, dear... I wish your parents could see you now.. Oh God! I pray for their souls!" She said teary-eyed.

"It's OK, Mrs.Jenkins." I said a little weary and teary. Remembering my late parents still saddened me.

"Oh dear! I am so sorry for bringing them up.. Here, please take this.. It is just a little present from me and Edward." She said and gave me a beautiful trinket box.

"Wow! It's so pretty. Thanks a lot Mrs.Jenkins. I'll say my thanks to Mr.Pearce later." I said and hugged her again.

"You are welcome, dear. I am glad you liked it. Come now, have your breakfast and help your friend downstairs. She was up early and did not even have breakfast. That poor girl, she is working too much.. It is good to have a friend like her."

"Yeah..Indeed.. Anyway, did you see Fluffy? I didn't see her since I woke up." I asked curiously while grabbing a bite of the french toast.

"I did not notice her around this morning. That cat usually disappears but it also comes back so do not worry."

"Yeah, you're right..."

"Alright then, finished your breakfast and go downstairs." She said then went out.

It said; six past forty-five when I glanced at my old wrist watch. The masquerade ball will start at seven and I'm getting ready at the moment. Aunt Stephanie hired some hair and make-up stylist for us tonight and right now, a woman with fully make-up on is trying to beautify me. I'm actually worried of how it'll turn out since I'm not used to dressing up and putting makeup.

"It's done." The woman informed me smiling confidently and contented at the outcome. I turned to face my antique dressing table and looked awed at my reflection. My honey-blond hair was laid down from its usual ponytail and is now shining vibrantly with wavy curls hanging on my shoulders. My eyes became more well-defined because of the dark eye shadows and eyeliners or whatever shimmering thing the make-up artist had applied on. My lips even looked luscious and fuller with the brick red lipstick on. Looking at myself in the mirror made me believed the wonders of putting on cosmetics. I stood up and went to gaze at myself in front of the full-length mirror in my dressing room. My blue long gown has a white transparent cap sleeve, the seductive transparent net extending just above the gorgeously bejeweled braided bodice hiding my white skin in mystery with layers of pleated full hem matching with a fancy blue crystal jeweled headpiece. I looked completely different but I like what I'm seeing. It's fine to indulge myself even just for tonight. I thought smiling and swiftly turned around, showing my bared back with tiny glittering blue jewels lining up on the cloth just beneath my backbone.

Hmmm.. I looked like a lady from the old century... like the girl that I somewhat resemble together with Ellis.. Somehow, why do I feel insecure... or jealous of a girl that I'm not sure if really exists? Maybe I'm just seeing those images or flashbacks because of my unconscious mind that wants to be with Ellis...

My wandering thoughts was cut-off when my aunt entered the room.

"Oh dear! You look stunning, hon." Aunt Stephanie complemented me with a bright smile. She also looks amazing with her red ball gown and fancy hairstyle. She looked a lot younger from her real age which is thirty-six. I sometimes wonder why she still remains unmarried and single when she's so damn beautiful. Well, I guessed too much wealth is not good for women. Wealth means Busy. Busy means No Romance. I pondered.

"Thanks, you look great too." I said and remembered something. "Aunt Stephanie, do you have a boyfriend?" I asked abruptly.

"What? No, no time for that. Why?" She asked a little taken aback.

"My History teacher will come and---"

"And?"

"Well, he's very handsome and I think he's still single so I wanna introduce you to him later. Is that OK?" I said feeling like a matchmaker.

"Silly girl.." She said pinching my cheek lightly. "If I'd want a boyfriend, I'd have it now. Do not worry about me, dear. I have so many things to worry about than a silly romance." She told me smiling.

"I see, 'Kay." I said with a giggle.

"Here. This is my present for you." She said and gave me a small box.

"Thanks! Can I open it?" I said excitedly and when she nodded I opened it quickly and was astounded. It's a car key! A Porsche to be exact!

"Do you like it?"

"Oh my God! Aunt Stephanie, I love it! Thank you so much!" I answered incredulously happy and hugged her.

"I am glad you liked it. You can ask Mr.Pearce to teach you how to drive on weekends."

"Yeah, I'm so excited to tell Mr.Pearce and test it." I said smiling widely. When Natasha went in to check on me. She's already dressed-up with full makeup on and hairstyle. She looks beautiful as well in her black shimmered long gown. Natasha smiled upon seeing us.

"Gorgeous! Gorgeous, both of you!" She exclaimed. "Here, I bought these at the antique store downtown." She said afterwards, handing me and my aunt the glittered Venetian masks with a bit of fur at the side. She gave me a silvery-white pearled mask and a black mask to my aunt. Natasha chose the gold mask to match her black gown with gold sequined on the bodice.

"Thanks, dear. You are surely handy." Aunt Stephanie praised her and gave her a peck on the cheek.

"No problemo." She said and grab my right wrist. She briskly fastened a silver Pandora bracelet with best friend charms.

"Wow! It's pretty, Nat. Thanks.." I said touched and teary-eyed then hugged her.

"Keep it well. I have the same pair of it as well." She said smiling and raising her right hand, showing an exact friendship bracelet.

"I will." I said smiling.

"Hmmm.. If I have known that such a small thing such as that can make you cry, I'd never have bought that Porsche Boxter 981 and just gave you a bauble." Aunt Stephanie jested laughing.

"What?! A bloody sports car?! You lucky kid!" Natasha burst out with exaggeration and they all laughed.

The music playing in the background is adding to the enchantment of the ballroom. The dim lighting and the crystal ball decors are fascinating my eyes. The flowers, dazzling buffet table with delicious looking dishes, and a fountain of blue and red liquid, probably a cocktail drink, are all amazing. The ambiance is giving the place a medieval look with the expensive curtains draping on the windows. The tall cake is also beautiful. Everything is magical. Natasha has done a pretty good job. I thought smiling. I slowly went down on the grand staircase, careful not to fall after Natasha announced my grand entrance as the celebrant. Everyone stopped and gazed at me, looking amazed and mystified. I felt my face flushed and thankful that I'm wearing a gorgeous mask to hide my embarrassment. I'm still not use to this attention. I roamed my eyes, looking for someone in the crowd then my eyes came across a familiar pair of emerald green eyes, shadowed with a mysterious black mask, gazing at me intensely. I unconsciously broke our eye contact when the guests clapped appreciably, surprising me, as I landed on the last step. I gazed back to look at those gorgeous green eyes again but there was no sign of him that he has ever been there. Ellis! My mind screamed. Was he here just now or was it another hallucinations of mine? It's hard to distinguish who is who because of their masks. Some even wore a whole mask which covered their whole face. I sighed, feeling disappointed.

The party started after the ceremonial birthday song, blowing the birthday cake candles, a wine toast to wish the birthday girl from which was done by my aunt, and a short teary speech from my one and only best friend, Natasha.

Everyone seemed like their enjoying themselves. I never thought that a lot of people will come. In fact, more people are still arriving and Natasha is accommodating them and leading them to greet me.

"Hey, Happy birthday. Great party. You look amazing by the way." Greeted a short girl I don't know. Well, Natasha sent the invitations to almost everyone at school since we didn't know who'll come. Thank goodness the ballroom is big enough for them.

"Yeah, thanks." I said smiling looking at the entrance. I'm still hoping for Ellis to show up but it's still early so he might still come... or not and the latter saddened me. William went to me to personally greet me again and handed me a small present followed by Patrice, Anna, Melissa and the girls and boys in their group which are empty handed. Well, I'm not expecting for a present from them by the way. That'll be too awkward. The girls are glaring at me menacingly which is not a surprise. Though I have to admit the girls are all pretty gorgeous with their expensive and provocative gowns and William looked decent and a gentlemen on his silver and white tuxedo. They're all wearing unique but gorgeous masks.

"Wow! Zylen Hayes! I have never imagined that you can look this hot!" Carrick, William's close buddy, who is wearing a full mosaic Venetian mask covering his whole face, ranted wide-eyed and whistled. I can't see his face but his burly stature and his strong Irish accent is quite obvious. William smiled at me admiringly.

"You look stunning, Zy. Happy birthday once again." He greeted and gave me a peck on the cheek to my surprise. I looked at Patrice instantly and she's fuming. The other girls are glaring at me more menacingly. Damn William for being stupid and kissing me on the cheek when he knows that Patrice is looking. I don't know if he's plain stupid or he's doing it on purpose to make my life miserable by the hands of Patrice and company. I sighed.

"Save a dance for me later," He said smiling and went towards the buffet area with his other friends to eat.

"You wench! Do not dare think about dancing with William." Patrice warned and walked off.

“Wench!” The other girls hissed at me and followed their queen.

"Do not mind those pathetic girls, Zy. They are just jealous." Natasha said coming to my side when she saw I was surrounded by the minions.

"Yeah.. Thanks.."

"Hey! Cheer up. It is your party."

"Yeah. I smiled but my heart is still longing for someone to appear. I suppose I am longing to see him so much that I've imagined I saw him a while ago. I don't care if I get bullied in my own party as long as that person come. I sighed again and motioned Natasha to the new guest which was a bit late for the party looking lost and shy. It's Peter. He is looking around while holding his mask on his hand. Natasha has finally gotten her hands on him. She confessed to me last night that they have started dating since last week and I'm just happy for her.

"Oh! This is bloody exciting. Tend to your guest, birthday girl or just enjoy and never mind your guests at all." She squeaked and giggled and left me with a wink and swiftly went to Peter. Peter nod at me, mouthing a shy happy birthday then was led by Natasha somewhere. I looked around, everyone looked alluring with their fancy gowns and tuxedos with matching shiny masks. It adds to everyone's mystery and charms. I was finally enjoying the magical scenery and forgetting about my disappointment at Ellis when in the corner of my eye, I saw Fluffy looking at me intently then ran towards the open door to the veranda. I slowly followed her curiously. Fluffy has been gone almost the whole day and now she's running away again somewhere. I reached the veranda, dimly lit, looking surprised to see a beautiful middle-aged woman wearing a simple old looking gown, standing sophisticated without a mask and looking at me with a warning look.

"Oh. I'm sorry.. I didn't know someone's here.. I was looking for my cat--Have you seen her passed by?" I muttered politely eyeing the strange looking woman.

"You should be heedful young one. As your power awakens, your life will be in peril. Do not trust so easily, someone so dear to you might betray you or you will betray yourself. It is your will to choose your fate. Tonight is a full moon and as your power grow stronger so as your enemies." The woman said puzzling me and walked inside the ballroom in a swift motion. I was left astounded and speechless.

"W-wait!" I called, finally regained my voice but the woman was already gone. I scanned my eyes through the dim ballroom from the veranda but I couldn't find her. I was about to go back inside when another sudden flashback came to my head like a lightning struck. The scene is quite similar to what I witnessed last night. I saw myself, or somewhat looked like my old self, wearing similar ballgown, maybe more grandiose and I'm also wearing a mask and my hair... Black hair?! was tied up in a sophisticated bun with some curly tendrils flowing on my pale bared shoulders, and I was....

"A penny for your thoughts, milady?" I heard a familiar husky voice, a voice I've been wanting to hear this whole evening, pulled me back to the present.

"E-Ellis?! you came..." I gazed at him, mesmerized. He looked so handsome, so not Ellis. He's not wearing his usual faded jeans and casual shirt. Tonight, he's wearing a black tuxedo so handsomely.. so gentlemanly.. A black half Venetian mask is covering half of his handsome face but it emphasizes his sparkling green eyes and his chiseled jaw. His usual tousled black hair is combed neatly at the back of his head. He looked like the guy in my vision, so perfect.. Hey wait a sec... He is wearing the same mask as the one I saw earlier which I thought was just my imagination! So, it was indeed, Ellis.. Why didn't he showed up earlier? I was confused but then I don't care as long as he finally showed up in front of me. I smiled brightly, showing my dimples which Natasha said would make any guy fall. I'm not sure if it affect Ellis but I was a bit surprise to see him looking at me intently without blinking then he shook his head like he is trying to clear his mind.

"Yes.. I should not have.." He whispered softly in the cold night breeze almost inaudible..

"What? But why?" I asked dazzled.

"Care for a dance, lovely lady?" He asked huskily offering his right hand to me instead, ignoring my queries. Well, that can wait.. Ellis just asked me to dance and even called me lovely. That'll do for tonight. I smiled at him shyly and accepted his hand.

=======#####=======

We're dancing quietly in the soft, sweet music the band is playing at the moment. Ellis is very quiet and looks like he's suffering from something. I unconsciously looked around and saw William dancing with Patrice not far from us, looking at me with an angry look. I don't understand why he seemed angry at me. I didn't mind and focused back to Ellis.

"Hey, what's wrong? You 'kay?" I asked in a worried tone. He sighed and looked down on me, locking his green eyes on mine.

"I will tell you.." He sighed.

"Huh? What are you gonna tell me?" I asked a little worried. If we have a romantic relationship right now, I might think that he's gonna break up with me and is having a hard time breaking the bad news to me.

"What you wanted to know. Come.." He said seriously and led me out of the crowd but before I was completely drag away, I saw my aunt with Mr.Wright drinking together and seemed like having a serious talk. I smiled. It's high time for my aunt to find a love life. Ellis led me back to the veranda then down the brick stairs and walked to the back garden.

"That serious?" I asked, looking at the dark surroundings and the tall bushes everywhere.

"More than you can comprehend." He said gravely.

"Spill the beans, Jack." I joked to ease the tension. He smiled sheepishly while staring down at me intensely and to my another astonishment since I met Ellis, He entrancingly leans down slowly... placed his left hand on my waist, his right hand on my chin...and slowly kissed me!--A deep and sensual kiss---I don't know how to react or respond since this is my first real kiss. I mean Ellis kissed me before but it was just a peck on the lips but this kiss is unnerving yet so good. I was easily drawn to his kiss. I slowly closed my eyes and kissed him back. He kissed me gently yet passionately like there's no tomorrow. I can kiss him like forever and still not get enough of him. Then the realization hit me. This guy has captured my innocent heart in a short time, since I've met him in my dreams. There's this invisible line that draw us together in an inexplicable attraction and I shivered by the thought. When Ellis ended the kiss, I was breathless.

"You are cold. I'm sorry... Here.." He said huskily and took off his tuxedo jacket and placed it on my bared shoulders.

"T-thanks." I stuttered looking away from him, my face flushed. I'm glad I'm still wearing my mask and so is Ellis. I can't see his expression clearly because of the mask and the added darkness.

I apologize for my actions, I should have not done that." He sounded distressed. "I just... you are so lovely and bewitching and that dress suits you really well. I.. did not know what I was thinking----"

"I'm not sorry." I pouted and bravely look him up in the eyes. He stared back, his eyes shimmering with fondness and a bit of amusement.

"Don't do that." He said grazing his thumb on my lower lip.

"H-huh? W-what? Why?" I asked foolishly and made him chuckle.

"Stop pouting your lips, It is making me want to kiss you again." He said, grinning mischievously at me and made me blush even further.

"What do you wanna tell me anyway?" I changed the topic to hide my embarrassment but I regretted it when I saw Ellis' face became solemn then suddenly his eyes became alert.

"I hate to delay what I have to say to you but I promise I will come to you tonight before midnight and tell you everything you need to know. But right now, we have some company."

"What? I don't understand----" My voice was cut-off and I gasped in fear when I saw the two scary apparitions from last time, hovering just around the bushes waiting for an opportunity to attack.

"What are they...?" I asked scared.

"Wraiths."

Chapter 5: Transition

"Any transition serious enough to alter your definition of self will require not just small adjustments in your way of living and thinking but a full-on metamorphosis."

-Martha N. Beck

I slowly opened my eyes, confused to see the darkness surrounding me. One of the night lamp on the bedside table was lit . I recognized my room. I adjusted my vision but my eyes are clouded and tired like my energy was drained out of me or something. My whole being feels quite exhausted and my whole body is sore. I tried to remember what happened and when I did, I anxiously shot up in a panic.

"Ellis!" I cried out.

"Zy, stay still..." I heard Natasha's voice. I didn't notice she's sitting on the left side corner of my bed. She reached for the other night lamp and lit it. The room became more bright.

"Nat..?"

"You should know how bloody worried I was when I saw you being carried by Ellis Wright looking lifeless. The doctor who came in earlier to check on you said it was fatigue. You need to have plenty of rest."

"Uhhh...I will.. ummm.. Did Ellis brought me here? Where is he? Is he OK? What happened to the party?" I asked worried, particularly for Ellis. The last time I remembered was the so-called wraiths became so many and some of them came for me then I lost consciousness.

"Yes. The party has ended quite well in spite of the little commotion, so, worry not. Anyhow, everyone saw you being carried by Ellis when you fainted. It was a bloody dog's bollocks to watch their reaction most especially, Anna. Wicked! As for Ellis, he is quite fine, why wouldn't he? He went home with his uncle by the way." Natasha reported. I sighed a relief after hearing Ellis was alright.

"Well.. nothing beats my luck." I whispered sarcastically.

"Silly! You should sleep now and rest. I have to go. My mother is in the parlour waiting for me. Will you be alright?"

"Yeah.. Don't worry.. umm.. say Hi to your mom for me, OK?"

"I will and don't get your knickers in a twist tomorrow, understood?"

"Yes mom!" I jested and made Natasha rolled her eyes.

"Don't be a wanker!" She said laughing.

"Oh, anyway, where's aunt Stephanie and what time is it?" I wondered.

"She was here earlier to check on your condition but went to her room afterwards when she heard you were alright. She's a tad drunk I think either of the booze or Mr.Wright and it's eleven past thirty, darling." She said giggling then went out of my room after saying goodbye. I was left alone, tired, and confused. I remembered the scary apparitions again whom Ellis called Wraith, whatever that is, attacked us and Ellis fought them but they were too strong and we were outnumbered. I can't even help Ellis but just watch frigidly like a stone. I can't even freaking scream. The worst part was when some of them were able to go near me and attacked me but after that I couldn't remember...

"Zylen..” A familiar, husky voice full of worry whispered my name from outside my room's balcony and it's the first time he ever called my name. Well, second time to be exact but it was only to annoy me so it doesn't count. It sounded good, hypnotizing... “Oh thanked God! I thought your friend will never go. Please open the door. My bloody arse is freezing out here." He chuckled faintly.

"Ellis!" I cried out after I got over the brief surprise. I swiftly opened the french door and instinctively threw my arms around him in a tight hug. He seemed a bit surprised of my sudden action and froze but it was just for a bit and hugged me back.

"I was very worried..." He whispered, caressing my cheek with his right hand. He then raised my chin and slowly leans over. I can already feel his breath on my face.

"You are quite beguiling, Zylen... I really want to kiss you right now..." He said huskily, captivating me.

Oh! How I love to hear him whisper my name.. It's so sexy..

"Okay.." I said bewitched and close my eyes, anticipating his kiss. I heard him chuckle but I didn't have to wait longer. Ellis kissed me sweetly and passionately, exploring my mouth. The kiss is as electrifying as ever, drowning me in the pool of unknown desire. I kissed him back instantly as passionately as I could and heard Ellis groan in pleasure.

"You taste so sweet as ever.." He mumbled through his kisses and I can feel his smile on my mouth. I can't help but moan in response. I shivered in a mixture of excitement and wantonness I have never thought I would ever feel. My knees buckled. I'm melting in his arms and before I can collapse, Ellis scooped me up gently and went in my room to my bed. He laid me down on my bed and sat beside me.

"As much as I love what you are wearing right now but you have to cover that for now, love. It is too tempting and you are not yet ready for what I am thinking right now." He said hoarsely, staring at me, lust and desire evident in his green eyes. I flushed furiously and covered my thin nightgown with the silk robe that was hanging on the velvet cushion beside the bed. I didn't realize that I'm just wearing a tiny piece of cloth without an undergarment! Natasha or Mrs.Jenkins must've change me into my sleepwear while I was unconscious.

oh what a bummer! Ellis must've have seen it! I screamed in my mind and covered my face with my hands in embarrassment since I'm not wearing a mask anymore to hide it. It made me blush even more when I heard Ellis chuckled. I pouted my lips, feeling shameful and displeased.

"I told you not to do that..." He said staring at me darkly, particularly on my pouted lips. I bit my lower lip nervously. “Ah, you never listen..”

"H-huh? Why?" I asked quizzically.

"It is making me want to do this...again..." He said huskily and covered my mouth with his while his hand raked through my already messed up hair and the other is caressing my nape. I raised my arms to hug him and feel his broad shoulders down to bis muscled back. I heard Ellis groaned and it made me want to hold him more.

Oh my God! This feels like heaven... I wish it'll never stop. I thought dreamily.

I was in nirvana when all of a sudden, I was pulled from the light and was thrown down in the dark abyss.

Where am I? I looked around but all I can see is darkness.

"Ellis!" I screamed his name but there was no answer.

"Were you calling for my beloved, Ellixiel? He cannot hear you here." I heard a beautiful, soft, yet menacing voice from behind me. I span around almost instantly and saw a girl... a beautifully enchanting girl that looked exactly like me, it oddly feels like I'm looking in the mirror, but with long, black hair hanging wildly on her back and luminous, dark blue eyes, staring at me ominously. She's very beautiful yet I feel a sense of foreboding staring at those dark blue eyes, full of sorrow, agony, and hatred?

"Am I charming you?" She asked and smiled at me without humor.

"Who are you? Why do we look.. the same..?" I asked confused.

"Curious are we not?" She stated arching her dark eyebrow at me. "However, I strongly disagree that we look the same my dear, not yet. I am for now, far more appealing than a mere human like yourself but not for long so worry no more..." She once again flashed me yet another menacing smile.

"What do you mean?" I asked a little irritated at her boastful talk.

"Patience is a virtue, is it not, Miss Zylen Hayes?" My eyes widened in surprise. So this girl knew me.

"Cut the crap, will you!? Where am I?" I hissed at her, getting annoyed at her poetic banter.

"A daring little thing you are... Yet I cannot kill you... How bothersome..." She taunted and gave me a sinister laugh while raising her right forefinger and a red flame flickered. "We are at my magical limbo."

I started to get chills looking at her devilish smile.

"W-who a-are you? W-what w-ill you do to me?" I stuttered, fear is all over my face. I heard her sinister laugh again.

"Afraid now? Hmmm...This is entertaining.." She said and to my horror, she blew the red flame to my direction and the hem of my thin gown flickered and started burning. I screamed in pain.

"Chop-chop! Be quiet! You are so noisy." She hissed and the flame disappeared in a blink. She then slowly glided towards me, barefooted. "Do not trust Ellixiel, I tell you. He will betray you in no time just as he betrayed me. He will always betray us." She whispered in my ear spitefully then touched my face with her two hands glowing with dark smoke and I screamed in pain.

"We will become one. I need a vessel and your power will be awakened very soon." She said and her hands glowed against my face more darkly, more terrifying, and I shuddered in pain once again, screaming and crying.

"Do not fight me! Accept your dark side and you will become powerful, you fool!" She roared while glaring at me with her terrifying, glowing eyes.

"No!!!!" I screamed and a bright light glowed within me.

Zylen fight it with all your might, I beg you..wake up, please.. come back to me! I heard a faint whisper.

Ellis' voice!

Hearing his voice made me stronger and angry at the girl who wants to tore us apart. I closed my eyes briefly and when I opened them, They are blazing and so are my hands. They are blazing with blue flames and I have never felt this strong and bold like a fire, like I was awakened from a long slumber and regained my strength.

"I don't know what you're up to but I wont let you use me!" I charged and the blue flame in my hands set ablaze encircling me but to my irritation and astonishment, the girl sneered and laughed vehemently.

"You have finally awakened.. hmm.. Brave girl you are. I do not dislike you... However, I do not fancy your liking for my beloved Ellixiel." She said, eyeing me with narrowed eyes.

"Ellixiel..? You mean, Ellis?" I asked confused yet again, lowering my guard. The blue flames slowly died down.

"The one and only, Ellixiel Wright." She pronounced every words with so much ferocity.

"What happened? Why do you sound so angry at him?" I asked full of curiosity.

"I have no time for your presumptuous queries. The clock ticks and my power cannot hold you here any longer but do not worry my other self, we will meet again soon... That is inevitable and when that time comes, you will willingly submit yourself to me to gain that power for your vengeful heart."

"I don't understand----"

"We will meet again at the second full moon. Please do give my hello to my beloved fiancé. " She sneered.

"Fiancé?----" I wanted to ask but instead a cry of pain came out from my mouth when the vengeful girl grabbed my wrist with her burning hands and forcibly pushed me in a cliff of darkness. I screamed once more, sweating and panting heavily, then I woke up.

"Thanked God, you are awake!" I heard Ellis gasped and encircled me in his arms. It feels good to be back in his arms again.

"What happened... and what's that?" I asked in a hoarse voice, looking up at the transparent glowing layer that is surrounding us.

"You were in a trance for almost half an hour, screaming and convulsing. I created this protective layer to conceal the noise and a shield from anything that might be attracted by your awakening." He said, looking weary.

So that's why Mrs.Jenkins didn't come running when I was screaming at the top of my lungs... Hmmm.. that long huh.. It felt like a few minutes being in that limbo..

"Awakening.. That's what she said.." I murmured quietly afterwards.

"She?" Ellis asked, though he looked like he's already concluding on something and he just wanna confirm it.

"The black haired girl who resembles me quite strikingly yet very different in a weird way and she called you her fiancé. I said emphasizing the last word bitterly.

"Evangeline..." He said the name in a trance-like manner that pierced through my heart.

"Evangeline huh.. It sounds familiar.. Uhh... the vision and in my dream.. He called her name.. It hurts and I can't hide my pained expression. “S-so.. Is she really your fiancée?" I asked gravely, looking away from his keen eyes. He chuckled lightly and pinched my cheeks.

"Jealous eh?" He asked smugly which made me blushed and vexed. He seized my face with his big hands to make me look at him.

"Of course not! Don't be conceited! I snorted which made him laugh warmly. I'm still irritated but I feel a bit appeased seeing his relaxed and relieved face.

"You are quite entertaining being like that, it means you are alright but you don't have to be jealous of your own self." He stated partly amused and partly serious.

"What do you mean?"

"She is you. You are Evangeline, her reincarnation. She is your dark side and as you have met, I presumed she had said something about me being a betrayer?" He sounded cool but deep in his voice, I can hear anguish.

"Yeah.. sort of.. What's the story..?"

"It's a long story... We don't have enough time for that since it's already late and you need rest. All I can say for now is that we loved each other but she did not trust me with all her heart..."

"Can you elaborate that?" I urged. I ca't believe that I'm a reincarnation of Ellis' fiancée. But how? Is Ellis also reincarnated? I also wonder, if I'm Evangeline, why did she hurt me? We really are completely different in almost all aspect except from the face value.

"Curious girl.. I will tell you some other time. You are exhausted and we need to treat these." He said gravely and raised my two wrists. I was horrified to see a first degree burn on my two wrists and on my right thigh where my nightgown was burnt. I immediately had forgotten about Evangeline, looking at the burns that marred my pale skin.

"Oh my God!" I muffled a cry. Now I can feel the prickling of my burnt skin.

"It's alright. I will teach you a simple healing spell that I have read."

"What? Healing spell? How am I suppose to do that?" I asked incredulously.

"You are an Enchantress. Actually, the only Enchanter left in your bloodline."

"Enchantress? Me? What the hell are you talking about?!"

"I know there are so many confusing things that you have encountered but please believe me... Do you trust me?" He asked, his eyes pleading.

"Y-yeah.. I think I do.." I admitted. I know it's still early to trust him but I do. His clear green eyes tell his soul.

"Alright, follow what I will say and focus on your wounds." He commanded and I just nodded.

"Repeat this; Sana.”

"Latin?" The word is kinda familiar but I totally forgot.

"Yes. All the incantations are written in Latin. It's good that you are learning it at school." No kidding!

"Yeah...OK.." He'll be surprise how bad I am at Latin. My face turned sour at the thought.

"Go on. Focus." He urged on.

"OK." Here goes nothing! I sighed then; "Saah-naah" I chanted hesitantly but nothing happened. "See? I can't possibly do it.."

"Because you are doubting yourself. Focus and believe that it will happen. If you cannot do this then we will have to awaken your attendant to give you a treatment and you wouldn't like it, would you? He said sounding really weary. I sighed and began to focus. To my amazement, I can feel my strength growing just like when I flickered that blue flame.

"Sana!I chanted and magically, I can feel and see a glow on my burnt skin, starting to heal and regenerate. "Whoa! This is awesome! I can do magic! Can you teach me more? Can I fix this nightgown?" I giggled excitedly. He sighed a relief seeing the burnt are perfectly healed and gone without a mark left not even a dot.

"I see you are finally enjoying yourself but you need to rest. I can teach you next time. Good job on your first incantation.” He ruffled my hair.

"I'm OK. I wanna learn more." I insisted.

"Don't be stubborn, you are exhausted. Come now, be a good girl and go get change then rest." He commanded gently.

"You sound like a dad or an old guy." I mopped.

"I am old, much older than you can imagine..." He said smiling.

"Oh c'mon! How old are you then? Seventeen? Eighteen? You couldn't be older than that.."

"Technically, yes. I am eighteen--"

"Hah! I was right! You can't fool me." I said smugly.

"However, I've been eighteen for five hundred years. So, basically I am five hundred-eighteen." He snickered when he saw my shocked expression.

"You've got to be kidding me!" I looked at him in disbelief but he just nodded, looking serious.

"Seriously?"

"Seriously." He repeated and smiled faintly.

"How come?" He sighed before he answered.

"I am immortal." That rendered me speechless. No way! So Ellis don't get old? How can we be together? Maybe I can do a spell that would make me immortal too. I'm an enchantress as what Ellis said and I did prove that with my healing spell and the blue flame I've produced while I was at that bizarre limbo. I smiled secretly at the idea that is running in my head. "Now change and rest." I heard Ellis said and aided me to stand.

"Thanks. Are you going now?"

"Yes, I need to rest as well since I also spent a great amount of energy vanquishing those wraiths although you are the one who vanquished half of them."

"I did? Ah! The lights!" I said remembering the lights coming out from my body before I fainted. That's why I felt so depleted when I woke up. I have never thought that a mere light can kill those so-called scary wraiths. I was pulled out from my reverie when Ellis suddenly came behind me and fastened something silver on my neck. It was a vintage silver necklace with an oval-shaped blue quartz stone. The blue gemstone is placed in the nest decorated with small crystal pebbles and the chain was long enough to hang just below my collarbone.

"Happy seventeenth birthday, Zylen. Do you like it?" He whispered in my ear huskily which sent shivers down my spine. It's officially my birthday after looking at the clock on my bedside table. It's past midnight already.

"Y-yeah. I love it. It's beautiful." I gasped in delight.

"You are far more beautiful but I am glad you liked it. It is a charmed necklace. Wear it all the time. It will protect you from the wraiths."

"What are wraiths?"

"They are spirits who feed from the energy and power of a newly awakened Enchanter such as yourself. They started to hunt you when you were nearly awakened just before your seventeenth birthday. That is the right age Enchanters claim their power."

"I see.." I uttered softly. These recent happenings were quite overwhelming for me to process easily.

"I will see you later at ten in the morning. I will fetch you so be prepared. I will tell you everything you needed to know. I understand it is your birthday but there's so many things that you should know and learn. I don't want to fail you again." He said softly then in a swift movement he kissed me lightly on my forehead and went out of my room to the balcony and jumped. I gasped, surprised and ran to the balcony. I looked down but there was no sign of Ellis. He just vanished just like last time. What does he meant by not failing me again? I sighed and went inside my room again and was stunned to see my reflection when I passed by my full-length mirror. My honey-blonde hair has tiny black streaks but looks vibrant, my pale white skin has a radiant glow, and my light-blue eyes became luminous dark blue. Everything about me is glowing and enchanting like Evangeline.. Come to think of it, I looked more like Evangeline!!!

Chapter 6: Glamour

"Real glamour and beauty is not just mascara, chanel no.5 perfume and perfect lipgloss, it's being a role model, being beautiful on the inside, and caring more about others than you do yourself..."

-THEDAILYQUOTES.COM

I woke up from a light knock on my door and heard my aunt's voice.

"I'm coming in, hon." She announced.

"Yes." I whispered huskily and was surprised by the sound of my voice. It sounded different, alluring. My thoughts were disrupted when my aunt entered the room holding a breakfast tray full of savory foods and aromatic tea. I inhaled it and felt my stomach grumble. I suddenly feel hungry. All those exhausting events last night made me weak and hungry but somehow I feel strong today like I was just reborn.

"I brought you your breakfast, dear. Happy birthday once again! How are you feeling now---" Aunt Stephanie ranted but paused to look at me with amazement, her eyes wide open.

"Thanks. I feel pretty good." I spoke and was surprised yet again, hearing my voice. It sounds so soft like whispering. I wondered when my aunt didn't speak again. "Aunt Stephanie?" I asked looking up at her and was surprised to see her staring at me with great wonder.

"Oh dear! I apologize for staring, darling. I am just quite entranced by your looks. You seem different today..."

"Different?"

"Yes, dear. I know you are already beautiful but now you are... I cannot explain it.. bewitching is the right word. Oh! I think it's because of that handsome child. You are blooming! hmm... Seems like you overcame that fatigue overnight. I'm glad, darling oh and I like your new hair color. Charming.. Anyhow, I have to go now. I have a flight this morning as you already know. Eat your breakfast and take care of yourself for now." Aunt Stephanie ranted again and kissed both of my cheeks then hurriedly went out of the room. I was left dumbfounded but decided to shrugged off my aunt's strange remarks. She was probably just teasing me. I should've asked her about Mr.Wright and turn the tables on her. I thought grinning and started munching the mouth-watering croissant. I was enjoying my breakfast when my IPhone rang and my favorite song; Magic by Coldplay, played in the background. I stared at my phone screen and an unknown number is calling me. I curiously answered it.

"Hello?" There's a brief silence like the caller was listening to my voice or was surprised to hear my voice. Well, can't blame em'. I was surprised myself too.

"Are you ready?" Finally a voice I'm very familiar with answered. Ellis! How can I forget?! I instantly glanced at my clock on my bedside table. It's exactly ten o'clock in the morning! I almost had forgotten about our appointment, date, or whatever you may call it but I prefer to call it a date. I smiled at the thought.

"Hi! Umm.. How did you get my number?"

"You sound like you are not yet ready. I assume you have forgotten?" He charged sounding annoyed.

Oh no! Ellis is angry...

"Umm.. well.. I'm getting ready in a minute. Where are you?"

"On your front porch."

"What?!" I asked appalled and ran out to my balcony and peeked down to where Ellis is. True to his words, he waved his hand at me when he noticed me, looking a bit baffled but it was very brief. It was replaced by his smirking face.

"Do I wait in your room while you get dressed?" He smirked at me and at that moment I just want to wipe that smirk off on his handsome face.

"No way! I'll tell Mrs. Jenkins to let you in---"

"No thank you. I will wait for you here. Be hasty or I will come up in your room." He threatened.

"OK! OK! God you're bossy! I spat then got off the phone and hurriedly went back to my room to get dressed.

=====####======

I finished dressing up in an instant and made a quick glance at myself in the mirror before I went out almost running--I put on my favorite cream knitted sweater over a white camisole, black fitted jeans, and black winter boots with a flat sole. As usual, I tied my hair up in a ponytail. I skimmed the charm necklace on my neck nervously and a grin formed my lip-glossed lips. I don't usually dress up to impress but meeting up with Ellis, it seemed like a date and I just want to impress him--I strode along the wide hall from my room down to the elegant stairs and to the front porch, my cheeks flushed with the thought of the kiss we shared last night. It was fast, confusing, and mind-blowing but I liked it very much. I also wonder why I feel so light-headed and bright today like I'm gliding. I reached the front porch and saw Ellis talking to Mr.Pearce. He didn't appear to notice my presence yet. I took the opportunity to fixed my eyes on him. He looks so dashing even with his plain white v-necked shirt under a black leather jacket, faded jeans and gray canvas shoes. His tousled black hair looks overly sexy over his compelling green eyes. So breathtaking... I looked up to his beautiful chiseled jaw, at his sensual lips and almost gasp when I saw his upper lip twitch into a smirk. Damn! He caught me staring again but when our eyes met, Ellis looked a bit baffled and his smirk was gone. He stared at me looking compelled.

"Missy, have you transformed into this stunning lady in just a day?" Mr.Pearce pulled us out of our reverie and looked at me in a daze.

"What? You're saying I wasn't stunning before, Mr.Pearce? Oh, you broke my heart!" I joked feeling brave and bold and when I glanced back at Ellis, he's back to normal again and smiling smugly.

"Oh! I did not mean that, young lady. You have just grown more quite appealing that's all." He winked at me and I chuckled heartily, my voice sounding like a sweet melody and then I caught Ellis staring at me again but it was just brief. I was wondering if Ellis gets affected by my presence as much as he does to me but I doubted it. He is just too confident and conceited to be swayed by my vague yet overwhelming transition.

"So, you two have met, I guess."

"Yes and this is a fine young lad you have here, Missy." Mr.Pearce glanced at Ellis and gave me a knowing look. I just smiled at him shyly and went to say goodbye.

=====####=====

"So, where are we going? I finally asked after a long awkward silence. We were walking to his parked car not far from mine and I was dumbstruck to see his sleek blue Bugatti Veyron. My new car faded in comparison to his. Of course, I shouldn't be shocked that Ellis is super rich since he has been living for quite a long time. He said he is immortal and right now I'm just dying to ask him but I need to wait. He said he'll tell me. Patience...

"I know this is quite flamboyant but I love speed and luxurious cars. This is my only indulgence." He smiled at me boyishly when he noticed I'm gaping at the car.

"Flashy." I teased, smiling at him and he smiled back. He doesn't look a bit annoyed anymore for almost forgetting our appointment slash date to my relief.

"Come." He ushered me to his car and opened the passenger door for me.

"How gentlemanly of you, Sir. Thank you very much." I grinned at him, copying Natasha's adorable English accent and got in to his overstated luxurious car. He blinked at me then flashed me an impish smile.

"I am every bit a gentleman, love. Please do remember that. He bowed at me mockingly and rounded the car to the driver's seat and gracefully got in the car.

"I'll take note of that."

"Please do." I just rolled my eyes in response and in the corner of my eye, I saw Ellis smiled genuinely and amused. I glanced at him and gave him a shy smile.

"Where to?" I asked as soon as the car fired up.

"To my house. All your questions will be easily explained there and I need to show you something." We became silent once more and it was deafening so I plugged my headset on my ears and listen to Coldplay's songs. I'm not much of a talker but when it comes to Ellis I just want to know about him and less about me. I have to admit though, the rarity of my true identity is causing me to be curious and nervous at the same time. After a few minutes past, I turned my IPod off and look at him.

"What?" He asked not glancing at me.

"Have you noticed a big difference about me?" He cocked his head and gave me a brief assessment then turned his gaze back to the road.

"No." He said with so much stolidity and I fought back not to hit him in the face. I wonder if he's just oblivious of me or he really doesn't notice any changes from me like others did. I frowned unknowingly and Ellis sighed.

"I did say no because for me you are still the same. You already are beautiful without that enchanting spell surrounding your aura because of your awakening. It's not real. We call it Glamour... a mere illusion or a spell to charm others especially your enemy. They can be deceived easily and be spellbound by you. Although, I do admit that it is quite bewitching even distracting and I cannot helped but be compelled by it. However, I like you better without it..." I looked at him full of bewilderment. Did I hear it right? Ellis said he likes me even before!

"I thought you hated me..." I whispered afterwards.

"When did I ever say that I hated you?" He eyed me warily.

"Well you acted like it and--Oh! I remember.. I saw you first in my dreams! It seemed real and even there you were annoyed when I'm around..."

"I apologize. I did not mean to act that way. I just don't want to be attached with you again and then lose you but then I cannot fight it. You are already attached to me, buried deep.. He said gravely and reached for my hand. "Here.." He pressed my hand on his chest and I muffled a gasp when I felt his heart racing so fast equal to mine.

"You're not going to lose me..." I said softly and raised my hand from his chest to caress his face. He held it and kissed my knuckles and it was thrilling.

"I hope so and those are not dreams. They were real..."

"What do you mean?" I was baffled.

"It is part of your power as an Enchanter to communicate through the dream. It is a dream but it is real."

"How? I didn't ask for it.."

"Yes but since your power was awakening so is your feelings."

"My feelings?"

"Yes, I am confident that your feelings towards me is quite strong.” He winked at me and I frowned at him.

"How conceited." I scowled at him and he chuckled.

“It is the truth. In fact, we used to meet in the dream you created because even in dreams you want to be with me." He smiled at the memory.

“We? You mean Evangeline, not me.” I mopped and Ellis chuckled softly.

“It's you. You are one, remember?” He pinched my chin affectionately but it didn't lessen my insecurity.

“Yeah, but I can't remember what we did together when I was Evangeline. That's making me uncomfortable and somewhat angry.” I confessed. He reached for my hand again and squeezed it gently.

“You don't have to, believe me. It's much better you don't know. It's not a very pleasing memory.” He sounded pained mentioning it.

“Ok... but if you say we are one then why did I meet her? I mean we are a completely different people.” I stared at him looking curious and confused.

“As I've said before, she is your dark side and a time will come that you will become one. A complete person and that's a big obstacle that you need to encounter and succeed. It's not easy and might drive you crazy.”

“That sounds threatening.” I sighed. "So what's with the losing-me-again-drama?" It was Ellis' turn to scowl..

"Do not speak about it so lightly. You have no idea how atrocious it was to keep on losing you for 500 years. Repeatedly." My heart was torn seeing Ellis' hurt face. I boldly raised my hand again and touched his face. I wonder if me feeling liberated since this morning is the effect of my Enchantress-awakening-crap.

"I'm sorry. I don't know anything about it so please tell me. What happened to those reincarnated girls like me?" To my delight, Ellis took my hand and twined his fingers to mine. It's sensational and surprising. Just a couple of days back, Ellis seemed distant and aloof whenever I'm around but I smiled at the memory of him always to my rescue when I was in danger in spite of his cold treatment towards me. He smiled at me when he saw me smiling and it sent thousandths of butterflies in my stomach.

"I will but that can wait. We're here." He stopped the car in front of a big house, a much bigger house than mine, an elaborately elegant manor. I wondered when I saw Ellis frowned and followed his gaze. A black Audi R8 and a silver mustang parked on the driveway in front of the manor. Uninvited visitors perhaps.

"I wonder.. Will there be much more surprising stuffs awaits me in there?" I arched my eyebrow at him in a teasing manner to lighten up his mood again and he did. He granted me his dashing and boyish grin.

"Let see about that, shall we?" He held my hand once more and we walk inside the monstrous manor, hand in hand.

"Alice--Oh forgive me--I mean Miss Hayes, I'm delighted to see you here---" He paused and looked momentarily a bit taken aback just like aunt Stephanie and Mr.Pearce then he swiftly regained his composure and smiled charmingly and gazed at our clasped hands. I instantly unclasped our hands feeling a bit embarrassed. My aftershock from my awakening must be fading away and my boldness is disappearing. "You seemingly look overly charming, Miss Hayes."

"You are quite the charmer yourself, Mr.Wright." I replied his flattery, feeling my boldness back on its track.

"Oh please--call me Rafael."

"Then call me, Zylen."

"Zylen it is." He smiled and when I looked up at Ellis, he looked pissed about something.

What's his problem? I pondered. Ellis is such a complex person. A while ago, he's all sweet and now he looks grumpy like the old man he is. I wanted to giggle from that thought.

"Ellis!" A loud and distracting squeal from behind us caught our attention--A tall, foxy red-haired girl wearing a super tight black long-sleeved blouse with a very provocative neckline over a black micro-mini leather pencil-cut skirt, knee-high black socks, and black ankle boots. Her face is pale and her big, dark brown eyes looked even more dark from the black eyeliner and smudge eye-shadows--emerged from a room that looked like a study room or a library. She's begrudgingly beautiful and the foxy redhead smiled sexily at Ellis. I frowned and gaped at her while she gracefully glided passed me and towards Ellis and to my utmost surprise, She kissed Ellis on the mouth! It was just brief but I still wanted to pull her red wavy hair away from Ellis but before I can do that Ellis gently hold her away from him and stared down at her impassively. I'm not sure on how I must feel about Ellis' reaction, if I will be happy that he treated her bold actions impassively or if I will get mad at him for not scolding her because of that.

Maybe he likes it? Oh no! She's very attractive compared to me. Who is she? A girlfriend? No! I winced at the dreadful thoughts.

"Maggie, this is unexpected. Why are you here?" He asked casually disregarding her scandalous parade and looked passed the redhead to me, to scan my reaction. His handsome face turned to a scowl when he saw my face turned beet red from anger. I have never felt this angry before except when my parents died from a car accident because of a stupid drunk driver. I shivered at the memory.

"I missed you, that's why." She pouted like a child and blinked her thick lashes at him, still oblivious of my presence. Ellis ignored Maggie and pulled my twitching hand from wanting to pull the annoying redhead's hair towards him. He placed me in front of him like a protective shield from a dangerous red fox.

"Maggie this is Zylen. You've heard of her, I'm sure? Zylen, this is Margaret but we call her Maggie." Maggie the redhead fox glowered at me and I saw a brief look of jealousy registered over her pretty face and was replaced instantly of a phony smile when she looked up to me. She wasn't that tall after facing her in a close distance. I'm actually taller than her some few inches and somewhat it gave me a slight relief that I have a tiny advantage against her.

"Of course, the infamous last Enchantress from the bloodline of Aurora and the reincarnation of your dearest Evangeline. How can I not know?" She spoke of every words with hidden spite but I knew. Maggie hated me the instant she acknowledged my presence just like how Patrice hated me because she thought I'm a threat that she needs to discard which I find quite troubling. Me being a threat? That's one ridiculous accusation.

"Glad to meet you, Maggie." I said emphasizing her pet name without her approval to pester her, in a sugar-coated tone and I was so glad of my so-called awakening for the first time since this morning for making my voice to sound like a melody. I also gave Maggie my most charming smile and I saw her gasp and looked entranced for a moment like she was under a spell. I was also surprised by her odd reaction.

Did I do this? Why am I acting like this? This is not me.. I feel so.. bold.. so.. liberated.. My baffled thoughts were disrupted when male voices erupted from the same room where redhead fox came from.

"Ellis!" A tall sandy-blonde guy with a playful smile on his face called his name and stifled a gasp when his eyes met mine. Same reactions I have gotten so far like I'm putting them on a love spell.

"And who might this charming lady would be?" A husky, beautiful voice emerged from behind the sandy-blonde guy waking up Maggie and the blonde guy from being enthralled. They both blinked their eyes looking stupefied. The newcomer is tall but not as tall as Ellis and the blonde guy. He exudes a similar aura, a familiar bewitching feeling like he is wearing a Glamour like me. He is also handsome. I shook my head lightly. No, to be exact, he looks painstakingly beautiful. An elf-like beauty. He is smiling brightly at me and if I'm not so attached to Ellis I might be spellbound by him. The fact that he is only wearing a simple black long-sleeved shirt and jeans yet so dashing could be distracting. He has black ruffled hair playfully hanging on his pale face, a perfect nose, red smiling lips, and black luminous eyes. That instant I knew. He is the same, an Enchanter like me. A deceiving beauty... and it pained me knowing that maybe Ellis Kissed me last night and became sweet to me because of that same reason. I want to puke thinking about it and my heart felt a sting like it is being stabbed.

"Maxwell." Ellis acknowledged him flatly and wrapped his left arm around my shoulders possessively while scowling at him in an intimidating manner. I was a bit appalled by his sudden show of affection but I liked it and I kept my face straight not wanting to break into a grin. The boy called Maxwell raised his dark brow at him in amusement not intimidated the least by Ellis' menacing glare. "I thought you already knew about Zylen since you dashed and dragged your bloody arse into my house without prior notice?" Ellis stated grimly rather than asked.

"Hi! So, you are the beautiful Zylen?" Maxwell ignored his animosity and beamed at me. I nod a bit flushed not because I'm into him but because of my growing discomfort. He's maybe drop dead gorgeous but somebody has my eyes already. I gazed at Ellis and the faint smile that threatened to break free from my lips vanished when I saw him gazing down at me darkly. Is he mad at me? I got confused. It's a pleasure to finally meet you. Honestly, I have been wanting to personally meet you and as Ellis pointed, I dragged my sexy arse here just to see your beauty beyond comparison." Maxwell continued blabbering nonsense flattery.

"Nice to meet you too, Maxwell." I offered him a polite smile.

"Oh please call me, Max." He offered and swiftly grabbed my right hand and kissed the back of my palm chastely and let it go as swiftly as he took it. My smile brittle and I chanced a brief glance at Ellis. Hell! He is steaming!

"I'm Axel." The burly sandy-blonde guy blurted out and smiled at me when he finally recovered from my Glamour. I saw Maggie rolled her eyes and mutely marched back to the room where she came from.

"Nice to meet you too. Call me, Zy." I smiled at him genuinely since he looked harmless and friendly and kinda cute too. He nodded acknowledging me still a bit amazed.

"Well, I don't mean to be rude but the introductions are over and my girlfriend and I have a date which is being stalled at the moment so if you'll excuse us. Let's have lunch together later if you're still so inclined to stay." He offered but obviously didn't mean to. My mouth dropped and stared at Ellis but he is not looking at me but at Maxwell. I'm his girlfriend? Since when? As much as I like him, I still feel a bit annoyed at him for telling his odd uninvited guests that I'm his girlfriend without my freaking permission! Seconds later, Maxwell chuckled after a brief silence looking at the both of us, examining us.

"Of course! I'm very delighted with your offer Ellis, thank you very much. I did not dragged my busy arse here just to go home this instant as you know already. I might live here." He chuckled. He obviously ignored Ellis' hidden meaning and fixed his dark eyes on me once again. "I'll see you soon at lunch, Zylen." He winked at me and dragged big Axel back to the room they all came from.

"Phew! That was intense." I started to ease the tension and uneasily look up to meet Ellis' blazing eyes. I looked away and remembered Mr.Wright. Where did he go? I didn't notice him slipping away.

"You need to filter that Glamour of yours or all the men will drool over your feet." He said blandly, staring at my flushed face. "Or do you intend to becharmed all the men's hearts?" He accused. I stared at him shocked and angry at the same time. Ellis is wearing out my patience. I childishly kicked his knee out of exasperation and irritation.

"Aw! What did you that for?" He sounded surprise more than hurt.

"I've been dying to do that." I hissed and walk-off.

Chapter 7: The labyrinth

"The only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive..."

-John Green

"Oh no! I'm lost. Why is this place so big but with so little people? Dang it!" I muttered feeling frustrated at myself. I've been rounding the corridors but I haven't seen anyone and I left my handbag with my phone in Ellis' car so I can't make a call. Another bad news is, I'm a person with no sense of direction so I would just get lost even in a Mall. I wonder if Ellis is still looking for me or he gave up already and decided, flirting with redhead fox is much preferable than playing hide-and-seek with me? I dreaded the awful thought. Then out of nowhere I saw---or rather I am drawn to like I am being called to---an iron-made door with an emblem of wings, a shield armor, and two swords that intersect. The surrounding of the door has some weird inscriptions that look like Latin. “Ne intraveritis” was written big at the center of the door just above the emblem. Ha! If only I studied hard in Latin I would be able to make out the meaning of the words written on it. There are some other Latin-looking words below and at the side part of the door hinges but I ignored it since I have no idea what it means. I reached for the door knob, expecting that it's lock but it opened easily. I slowly opened It and curiously went in. It led me to something that look like the back of the house where there are some Cherry trees with white and pink colors, Hillier trees, trimmed bushes, cedar swings, and a wooden bench near a lotus pond with white, purple, and pink lilies. There are also Spring flowers everywhere such as a flowerbed of Bluebelles, Primrose, and a lot more which I don't even know the names but so far they're all beautiful. It weirdly feels like Spring when it's already Winter. This place seemed like it has some kind of a spell cast on it to sustain the beauty of Spring.

"Wow.. This place is so breathtaking..." I gasped looking at some butterflies and dragonflies flying and hovering on the flowers and I have forgotten how irritating Ellis was. This place is just magical and it gives me a refreshing feeling. Everything looks like sparkling or are they really?

"Loving the view, eh?" I heard a chilly voice from behind and so I swung around to face the stranger and stared over his face with a feeling of awe. Another beautiful male. A Latino or Hispanic beauty by looking at his somewhat tanned skin and distinct features. Honestly, what's with these handsome guys? They seem to be everywhere lately and it's mind-blowing! This new guy on the other hand, looks oddly normal. Too normal..No Glamour or no extra-ordinary aura. Just plain normal which is weird but in spite of that he is very handsome yet somehow I can sense a tinge of mystery around him like he is hiding something but I don't know what exactly.. his true self maybe? I stared at him trying to figure him out. He has a very long black silky hair that's been tied at the back of his head and is hanging on his back. He has very dark eyes that almost looked like black with thick lashes hovering them and a perfect nose. His face looked like it had been sculptured to perfection with lips that is naturally red and right now is looking oddly grim. Then I looked at his medieval looking clothes. He is wearing a simple, loose fitting shirt with tubular sleeves and underarm gusset; a tunic to be exact that is tucked in his black trousers, and a pair of black knee-high glossy boots. Wahhh.. a medieval-looking strange person! Who is this guy? He actually looked like a handsome character from an old century movie and very tall too. What's with the tall and hot guys crossing paths with me? I just can't look at them without my mouth wide open. “Did you now find a liking to my exquisite beauty, my dear Evangeline?” He spoke again but he looked pleased this time. I just continued staring at him because I'm just too speechless to be called Evangeline again. I don't know if I should deny that I'm her when I'm really her. It's very complicated so I remained silent instead. “Though I find it quite unbelievable since you have ignored me for centuries without even visiting me here in this torturous oblivion.” He continued coolly but I can sense a repressed rage from his cold dark eyes. Now, what did Evangeline do to him to make him this angry? I pondered.

“Ummm, I'm sorry... I don't know you.. What's your name, Mister..?” I eyed him innocently.

“Leon.” He answered but his eyes grew even more darker. I'm getting chills already. “Have you forgotten the name you often called me once, the same as to how you have forgotten your promise to me?” I backed away looking totally ashen when I saw him gliding towards me with a sinister look. Oh no! Just what did that brat Evangeline do to anger this scary guy? I swiftly turned around to reach for the door knob but it wasn't there anymore. It's gone! I ran instinctively towards the thick trees.

“You will not flee from me again, Evangeline! You will forever be with me in this cursed place! I would rather have you here in this God forsaken solitude than not have you at all!” His angry menacing voice echoed and the birds chirping on the tree branches flew away, scared, but to my horror they all dropped dead on the grassy field. Then suddenly, in a slow motion, the grassy field with beautiful flowers transformed into a cold clay stone paths with cracks at the edges. The trees turned into dark brick walls forming a unicursal maze. The beautiful scenery is gone and was replaced by a hideous-looking maze-like structure. There are some creepy vines that are twining on the walls upward. I ran and ran and just when I thought I'm already far away, I was horrified to found myself back at the beginning where I started off. Shit! Am I just circling around? I ran again, twists and turns, my eyes widen from time to time seeing some oddly creepy unknown creatures flying, crawling, eating rotten insects on the floor. I'm glad they're all busy to notice me. There's even sticky blood on the floor and on the wall dripping endlessly, flooding and reaching my boots. I'm too mortified to stop so I continued on running then I screamed when I bumped into something hard and when I looked up, I yelped. Leon looked different. He is still handsome but he looks terrifying. His long hair looked even more long and is hanging loosely at his back. His beautiful eyes are all black. I can't see the white in his eyes anymore and he has black creepy spidery wings and his nails are long and black and they look more like sharp claws. The true form that he's been hiding---that's why there's something absolutely odd about him a little while ago---surfaced when he got angry and so is all the fantasy surrounding this fake place transformed back into its true form. A wretched cursed place...

“Ellis!” I screamed his name automatically but there was no Ellis and that only made Leon angry. He slapped me and I yelped in pain as his massive claws made contact with my fragile skin. I can feel the blood dripping on my face but I didn't cry. As my blood drip, the busy creatures stopped what they're doing and stared at me, looking like they have found their new prey. My eyes widen in horror as all of them flee, crawled, and ran towards me attacking me but before they can even touch me they all turned into ashes as they touched an almost invisible dark smoke that instantly surrounded us. Leon didn't even flinched or moved a muscle, looking oblivious of our surroundings. His eyes are focused only on me.

“E-Evangeline.. Oh no.. I.. did not mean to hurt you..Please forgive me, my love..” Leon went closer to me and touched my marred cheek. He caressed it tenderly. I flinched but not able to move away from him and it made him looked solemn. I don't understand him. He looks terrifying but I can also feel that he is pained by accidentally hurting me. My heart cried for him unknowingly. What made him into this? I need to know...

“What happened to you?” I asked and touched his hand that is on my face. I can feel him froze and see his eyes changed. They're actually gray at a close distance. They're very charming and they look kind. A total opposite of his horrific black eyes a while ago.. He was about to answer me when an eye-blinding light break out from behind us and I looked around to see Ellis with Axel, Max, and.. the redfox! Ellis is holding two luminous short blades just like last time which is good for close combat, Axel has a big sword, Redfox has a bow and arrow, and Max is holding nothing but when he gazed at Leon his right hand weaved a long sword made of ice. Behind them, a bright circular light that looked like a portal is slowly closing in.

“Zylen! Are you alright?” Ellis' eyes darted towards me and are blazing in fury when he saw my face.

“Y-yes.” Is all I can mutter. I then stiffened when I felt Leon's arms enfolded my body.

“Let her go, Leon!” Ellis roared.

“How dare a mere insect as yourself command me? Do you not remember your position, Ellixiel Wright?” Leon answered calmly but contempt is obvious in his voice. “You even brought these poor little children with you to die? How lowly have you become?” He continued in a mocking tone.

“Don't undermine us!” I heard Max hissed and then my eyes widened when I saw a hail of sharp ice shot towards us but it didn't pierce through the invisible dark aura-like shield that encircled us before the ice bullets struck.

“Maxwell! You almost hit Zylen, you fool!” Ellis glared at Max furiously and Max who recovered from his anger glanced at me looking apologetic. I wasn't able to fully recover from the fright of Maxwell's sudden attack when Leon surprised me when he flew and carried me with him. I screamed and turned pale when I leaned down and saw Ellis and the others becoming small. From above I can see the complicated maze that made up the labyrinth. It looked more terrifying from above. But I was more scared of the heights which Leon is taking me up higher. We are still soaring high and my vision is becoming blurry because of the fog. I faintly noticed that we are now above the dark clouds.. Dark clouds?! I am mortified with that fact. I have acrophobia for crying out loud!

“L-Le-on..” I whispered, stuttering and shivering from the cold night. I didn't realize it's already nighttime or is it always nighttime here? Hearing my voice, he shifted his hands from my waist and swiftly scoop me up careful not to scratch me with his claws in his arms in a bridal style. I felt better since I can't see what's below us anymore. He gazed down on me, his eyes all black again but I don't feel scared of him anymore. I pity him instead. I think he has been in this awful, hideous place all alone and I want to know as to how and why was he locked up in here...

“Evangeline... I beg you... Do not leave me... again...stay with me. I will make this place as beautiful as earlier or whatever you want if you only ask. I have forgiven you already..” My heart was torn looking at his saddened expression. He looked pained and it's breaking my heart. I raised my hand and touched his beautiful face. His eyes changed again into gray, looking at me sorrowful.

“I'm so sorry if I can't remember you, Leon. Honestly, I'm not really Evangeline.. My name is Zylen..ummm, I'm just her reincarnation.” I confided at last and saw the change of his expression. He looked surprise, angry, sad, a mixture of emotions played on his face but then he recovered briefly.

“If that is the truth... Then Evangeline died..” I saw the muscles on his face twitched.

“Well... technically.. yes.. and I don't know what she did to you but I am very sorry because I am still a part of her...” I said feeling my tears in the corner of eyes wanting to roll down my cheeks.

“You are quite different from her I observed, yet just as beautiful...” He whispered almost inaudible and I blushed. “Do you want to leave this place away from me?” He eyed me surreptitiously.

“Umm, honestly I want you to get me down first. I'm really scared of heights you know.“ I said but then Leon's attention was already somewhere else. I followed his gaze and was surprise to see Ellis with a transparent-looking, luminous wings flying towards our direction. Ellis has wings?! Though his wings looked more like projections of bright wings rather than real wings. He looked really angry.

“Leon! Leave the girl alone and fight me!”

“Please let me go... I know you're a good person. Don't fight with Ellis. I don't want any of you to get hurt..” I begged him. He looked surprised and I don't know which surprised him.

“Evan---Zylen...” Leon whispered my name sadly, testing my name awkwardly and caressed my injured face. I can't help but winced as I felt a sting and Leon's face became more grave to catch my pained reaction. "It is a first that someone cared for me.. I'm happy it is you.." He smiled genuinely for the first time showing his perfect set of white teeth and I noticed his two elongated fangs. He looked so fragile in spite of it and handsome. “I am so sorry for marring your beautiful face---” He continued looking grave again but was interrupted by Ellis' booming voice.

“Do not touch her with your filthy hand, you monster!” Ellis charged and at the same time, something hit Leon at his back, a powerful blow that led him to release me from his grasp. He looked hurt and terrified to see me falling away from him. I shrieked in fear as I'm falling fast below, making me nauseous. As I was falling, I catch a glimpse of the fight above me. Axel and Max are fighting Leon and it looked like they have injured him. Leon looked distracted as he is looking at me and trying to fly towards me but was held back by Max and Axel. Max has wings made of ice and a long sword made of ice as well while Axel has the same looking wings as Ellis, holding a big sword. They are both fighting Leon at the moment.

“No! Don't hurt him...” I whispered as my eyes are getting fuzzy.

Zylen!” I heard Ellis' worried voice as he finally caught me before I completely fall. He hugged me and flew to the opposite direction of the fighting scene.

“Ellis... I'm s-so d-izzy..” I'm just glad and relieved to see him again. To see his handsome worried face.

“It's alright now..He cannot harm you again.” He said grimly and hugged me tightly.

“No, Leon is---”

“Let Maxwell and Axel take care of him.”

“No!” I screamed.

“What?” I didn't have the chance to answer as we landed, Ellis ran while I'm still in his arms towards Maggie who at the moment is weaving something circular and bright. “Is it done?” Ellis inquired sounding riled.

“Almost.” Maggie replied without looking at us.

“Hurry!” He roared.

“Done!” Maggie hissed sounding irritated and then I saw an opening that looked like a portal. I saw the familiar corridor at Ellis' manor.

“Maxwell! Axel! Let's go!” Ellis shouted then a few seconds later I heard a loud thud. I looked at the direction where I heard it and I gasped as I saw Leon on the cold stone floor lying still while his wings are frozen and his arms and legs are restrained with shackles made of ice. Max and Axel landed gracefully and walked towards us. I noticed their wings disappeared and so are Ellis'.

“Leon!” I called while I was being carried into the portal but before I lost sight of him, he looked up and stared at me, smiling sadly then I passed out.

The dark prince's point of view (Special chapter)

1497, Canterbury, England

I am watching Evangeline like a hawk as she practices her incantation. I am standing behind one of the tall and thick bookshelves with incantation books on it, hiding my presence from her view. It is not allowed to disrupt an Enchanter when they are in focus at making spells. It is against the rules. I saw her move gracefully as she waves her slender fingers trying to perfect the spell. Then I saw her flawless forehead wrinkled as she made a mistake and made the poor rat into a frog. I became amused as she giggled childishly afterwards. She's a breathtaking sight to look at and I will not be tired of watching her. I love this girl and I will always love her. My heart yearns for her when she is out of my sight. I love everything about her. Her lovely face, her childish banter when we talk, her hearty giggles, and even her clumsiness and her impulsive behaviour. I know there is no one suitable for her but me. I will protect her from anything and from anyone. I will not let anyone steal her from me. I know she has a large number of admirers but I am far more suitable for her. They only love her for her captivating beauty but I love her inside and out. I will wait for her eighteenth birthday to come and I will ask for her hand in marriage. I have decided to become a Guardian, her Guardian so we can be together even if that means to give up being an heir to a kingdom which I do not even wish to come back anymore. My heart is already engraved in this place where Evangeline is. I have to let Mistress Aurora know of my proposal as soon as possible. I smiled, pleased with my decision.

"Prince Leon." A girl's voice interrupted me from behind. She gave me a slight bow to show her respect then looked at me sternly. I arched my eyebrow at her, feeling irritated as I saw who it is. She is Evangeline's handmaiden, Cassandra. I do not like her at all. There is something in this girl that is bothering me. Whenever I watch Evangeline I can see this peasant eyeing my dear Evangeline with hidden contempt. I know of it even if Evangeline cannot see it. This Cassandra looked at her with great envy. I do not trust her but I cannot warn Evangeline since she finds a liking to this ungrateful servant. I can see she adores this little girl.

"You have no need to bother, I will go." I said harshly before she can speak. I turned towards the the already opened door but before I can completely be out of ear reach, I heard Evangeline spoke, sounding frustrated. I stopped and hid behind the open door feeling curious.

"Cassandra! I have to see him again! I cannot focus at all! All I did is think about him! Look! What have I done to this poor creature. I turned it into a frog and I cannot reverse it to its original form because my mind is out of focus..." Evangeline squeaked. I felt a pang of pain struck my heart. Who is she talking about? Is it me or is it another man? I sighed and walked away. I have never imagined Evangeline to be this distracted by a man. We had met long ago when I was Eighteen and she was still fifteen. She did not once felt like this towards me. She is always at ease with me like I am just her playmate and I do not think it is a good sign. We met two years ago. I still remembered that fateful meeting where she started to stir my heart and changed me...

"Prince Leon your father has sent you here to be trained as a good person and as a competent combatant so you can be a great leader when your father will be ready to pass down the throne to your care. His Majesty knows what is best for you." My loyal attendant, Marco explained calmly when he saw how angry I was to be thrown in this cold, stranger of a place." I stared at him vehemently. I do not believe that father sent me here for a good reason. He hated my existence so he threw me away.

"What will come of me here? This place is isolated with no beautiful women!" I hissed and looked at the tall trees and bushes leading to the big estate. We are traveling in a carriage at the moment to the Et Auguriis Manor. My mother said it is a place for Enchanters who practice magic. My mother, the Queen was once an Enchanter but left when she married my father. I heard that if an Enchanter marries an outsider he or she will have to renounce his or her power or the outsider will become a Guardian to be a protector of the Enchanter betrothed to him or her. However, my mother didn't have the heart to make my father waived his rights as the rightful heir to the throne. Who would have want to throw away his position as a king? Not my father.. Not even me..

"My Prince, that is one of the reason his Majesty sent you here, to focus solely and be celibate until your set marriage. Your infamous escapade with every woman is quite well-known in Spain. His Majesty and the Queen are worried that no woman of the Royal family will accept your marriage proposal. Please, this place is not bad. No one knows about your true identity except for the Mistress Aurora, your mother's dear friend and just a few trusted servants and her only daughter." I ignored him and stared through the window when an idea came to me. When the carriage slowed down, I jumped out and ran through the woods. I laughed contentedly as I heard Marco's appalled voice calling me but I just continued on running. I will definitely give them a pain in their behind before they can tame me----My mischievous thoughts were disrupted as one of my booted ankle was caught by something and now I am hanged ridiculously upside down. I heard a girl's giggle then I saw a pair of blue sapphire eyes stared at me amused. I cannot see her completely because of my uncomfortable position.

"Little girl, bring me down this instant!" I commanded her with my normal arrogant tone.

"Hmmp! Who are you calling little girl Mister ill-tempered?" She raised her eyebrow at me and placed her hands on her hips. I find the gesture oddly attractive so I shook my head which is getting dizzy.

"Alright, Pretty lady will you please get me down? I am almost feeling lightheaded." I said as calmly as I could. I saw her smile and it showed her perfectly white teeth and her pretty dimples appeared. I was captivated by her smile so I was surprise to hear her voice.

"et deducent!" She chanted and I fell on my back with a loud thud. "Waah... my spell worked!" She clapped her hands jovially.

I was about to scold her when I froze to see her innocent yet beguiling beauty with no comparison.

"My name is Evangeline and you are?" She flashed another smile at me, oblivious of my pained backside. On that moment, my heart was captured. She is the first girl who was not amazed by my handsome looks.

"I am Leon." We clasped our hands and that started our friendship...

I sighed at the memory.. Until now Evangeline has treated me just a mere friend and she never feels frustrated about something with regards to me. Then dinner came. Mistress Aurora asked everyone to gather at the enormous dining hall that has more than twenty long tables. Everyone filled the long tables as they eat and drink to their hearts content. After the dessert was served, Mistress Aurora stood at the center.

"Ladies and gentleman of the Et Auguriis Community, I have an important announcement." She began and everyone stopped chattering and turned their gazes at her and so am I. I unwillingly tore my gaze from Evangeline who is playing with her food in front of me. "As you all know, my only daughter Evangeline will be coming of age in the succeeding month." I gasped feeling alarmed to hear the continuation. She continued. "As part of the rules, she has to be betrothed to a suitable Guardian at the age of eighteen and I have selected a fine young man for her. Come dear.." She motioned someone that I did not notice seating at the far table. "Everyone please greet Ellixiel warmly." Everyone obeyed willingly except me who is furious at the unexpected news. I darted my gaze at Evangeline and I almost cried in pain to see her beautiful blue eyes sparkled in excitement upon looking at the boy called Ellixiel. On that moment, I know I have lost her and I hated that green-eyed boy for stealing her so easily from me...

The present...

I am lying on the cold stone feeling defeated yet again by Ellixiel. The pain I feel from the cuts I have gotten from those children are nothing compared to the pain I feel for the second time since 500 years ago. For stealing Evangeline even in her new life as Zylen and I cannot do anything as I am cursed and imprisoned in this purgatory for eternity for doing something against nature in hopes that she will keep her promise and be with me but she chose revenge and killed herself than to be with me. Now, I am no longer human. I am now a prince of darkness with no soul and with no one for the rest of my life. I no longer hope for redemption as I did nothing to deserve it. If only I could die and stop this misery...

Chapter 8-2:Memory loss

"Forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember. We change the memory of our past into a hope for our future."

-Lewis B. Smedes

I blinked my eyes as my consciousness is resurfacing back. I can hear some people murmuring or fighting? I am not sure as my mind is still a bit clouded.

"That bloody door was supposed to be sealed! How did she get in and how did she even find it?!" I finally recognized Ellis' voice. He sounded so angry about something...

"Ellixiel, calm down. I have no idea. And she is an Enchanter, is she not? She has powers beyond our knowledge and control. How are we suppose to know?" I heard Mr.Wright's calm voice. What are they arguing about? Is it about me?

"E-Ellis..." I whispered and winced after hearing my croaked voice as my throat feels dry. I noticed my eyes felt wet and my cheeks have dried tears when I touched it. Did I cry? I didn't notice I was crying... But why? Ellis rushed inside the room which I just noticed, must be his room based on the old portrait of him and some boys his age--The painting must've been from the 14th century by the way they dressed and Ellis' hair is kinda long and old-fashioned---hanging on the wall at the west side corner of his enormous room. He was smiling brightly in the painting and he looked so happy and vibrant like he didn't have a damn care in the world. I wondered who painted that beautiful painting. That person must had been quite talented as he had captured Ellis' expression perfectly.

"Zylen... What's the matter? Are you hurt somewhere?" I smiled faintly as Ellis worriedly checked me everywhere as soon as he reached me.

"I'm OK. Just thirsty..." I smiled at him when he immediately stood up without a word and went to the tea table just next to the bed and filled the glass with water.

"Here." He helped me up to a sitting position and aided me to drink.

"Thanks.."  I don't know why but I somehow feel sad about something but I can't seem to remember why. I eyed him warily and he furrowed his brows then cupped my face and ran his slender fingers on my cheek.

"I'm glad they're gone..." I heard him whisper something inaudible while he's caressing my left cheek gently like it is something fragile.

"Ellis?" I called his attention and he stared at me. His green eyes looked worried as he stopped stroking my face.

"Yes, love?"

"I'm wondering---no actually I'm kinda confused.." I didn't know how to explain how I feel so I sighed instead.

"Confused? About what?" His brow wrinkled even more and his eyes looked more concerned. I felt a tinge of guilt as I feel like I'm the one causing him to be distressed. I touched his forehead and a sudden playful thought crossed my mind. I flicked my fingers on his forehead and giggled as Ellis looked stunned instead of hurt.

"What was that for?" He looked somewhat confused but I can see his upper lip twitched into a smile as he heard me giggle childishly.

"I don't like you frowning." I pouted and covered my mouth defensively as I saw his attempts to kiss me. Ellis just chuckled at my quick defense and I smiled at him. I can't let him kiss me now because I will lose my mind and I can't let that happen. There are just so many questions in my head that need to be answered.

"Why is that?" He smiled and kissed my hand that is covering my mouth, teasing me. Think straight Zylen. Don't get lured to his advances... I ordered myself as I am about to lose control and might kiss him myself. The attraction between us is just too strong to ignore.

"Because you look like five hundred eighteen when you frown." I teased to distract him and he laughed.

"Which I am by the way." He said through his laugh and I am captivated by it. Ellis looks so damn handsome when he laughs and it made my defenses crumbled.

"You look super handsome when you laugh and I love it." I said it out loud before I stopped myself. My face turned beet red after realizing it and Ellis flashed me his most charming smile.

"Really? Does it make your heart flutter?" He teased while swiftly pulling me from the bed and to his lap, encircling me with his arms. I gasped but kept my hand firm on my mouth, shaking my head to deny his words. He laughed again and surprised me by putting his ear just above my breast, listening to my heart beat which is racing like a horse on a run at the moment. I blushed uncontrollably again. "Hmmm... Your heart says otherwise, love." Ellis raised his head to gaze at me with a smirk on his lips. I frowned but Ellis kissed it away as he leaned and brushed his lips on my wrinkled forehead then he kissed the tip of my nose, my cheeks, then he gently pressed his lips on my hand which is still covering my mouth. I am beginning to lose my control and by the gleam I saw in his eyes, I know that he knows as he easily pulled my hand away from my mouth. He brought my hand to his lips and softly kissed my every knuckles making me dazed. I didn't fight it anymore as Ellis' face slowly closing in, I closed my eyes and welcomed the kiss. It's a sweet and gentle kiss like he's just tasting my mouth. He played with my upper lip then my lower lip and then he licked and pressed his tongue seeking entrance to my mouth and I obligingly opened my mouth to meet his skillful tongue. I moaned in pleasure as he deepened the kiss and I returned his every kiss with the same intensity. By the time Ellis ended the kiss we are both breathless.

"I just can't get enough of you..." He whispered and kissed my neck lightly then my still close eyes. I smiled shyly as I opened my eyes and stared at his captivating green eyes.

"And I to you." I grinned and bravely bit his lower lip and giggled at his stunned expression. I think Ellis can't cope up to my change of characters. Sometimes shy sometimes too daring. I can't understand myself either.

"A daring girl you are." He grinned and captured my mouth once again to another passionate kiss.

"Ellis?" I called his attention as we sit on the bed, my head leaning on his shoulder while Ellis' jaw rested on the top of my head.

"Hmmm..?" He mumbled and sniffed my hair. Oh! I wish we could stay like this forever... Ellis is extra-sweet today and I wonder why...

"Why did I cry?" I raised my head to look him in the eye. I got worried as I saw a brief of anger crossed his green eyes but it vanished as soon as it appeared. He smiled at me and tucked away the loose tendrils that's covering my right eye behind my ear then kissed my cheek lightly. I know Ellis is hiding something from me. My instinct can smell something fishy...

"Didn't you remember? We had a little fight and you kicked my leg and went into hiding." He smiled at me and pinched my nose fondly. I winced as I remembered what I did but after that... My memory seemed to have some gap which I can't point out what... It feels like I've had some partial memory loss.

"I'm sorry.. Did it hurt?"

"You can't imagine... I thought I was going to lose one of my leg. You kick like a man, love." He jested and chuckled when he saw my mouth dropped.

"I did not!" I frowned at him but he just continued to laugh.

"Yes, you did. Maybe you have a man's leg? Or maybe yours are bigger than mine?" He smirked at me. I stood on the bed and kicked him on his left leg. "Awww! are you trying to cripple me, love?" He laughed and grabbed my right leg, pulling me back on the bed. He hugged me so I can't hit him anymore.

"Hmp! My legs aren't big!' I pouted but Ellis just keep on laughing but when he saw me getting annoyed, he kissed my pouted lips and it instantly erased my annoyance at him.

"I was just kidding. Don't get mad. I know you have a sexy pair of legs." He said smiling and ran his slender fingers on my knee up to my thigh which sent shivers to my whole being. I shook my head to clear my mind. Ellis is distracting me, I know.

"What are you arguing about with your uncle?" I asked him out of the blue. I saw his smile disappeared and became serious.

"It was nothing. Just a family matter." He said impassively.

"Are you hiding something from me?" I asked him suspiciously and regretted it as I saw his face turned dark.

"No. Don't you trust me?" I sighed. I remembered what he told me about Evangeline not trusting him and now me. I am definitely Evangeline. We both have trust issues.

"No, I trust you Ellis... It's just that I feel like there was something in me that was stolen or erased. I know I didn't cry simply because we had a petty quarrel. I knew it was different. I feel guilty about something I can't remember. Like I did something terrible to someone..." I sniffed as my eyes started to water. I just feel so sad and guilty for no reason. I just know they did something to me but I don't know why they did it...

"Oh, Don't cry, love... You didn't do anything bad to anyone. Ease your mind." Ellis gently stroke my hair and kissed my tears away. I heard the door opened and saw Maxwell. I stared at Ellis in wonder. He nodded at Maxwell. "Don't worry, love. It's just a calming spell." I heard him say then Maxwell's voice clouded my thoughts and suddenly I felt relaxed...

Chapter 9: The secret

While all deception requires secrecy, all secrecy is not meant to deceive.”

I've noticed a few weird glances from the people in the dining table, especially Maxwell, who somewhat look guilty for something I can't even comprehend. Axel also gave me a worried look which is strange. The only person who isn't giving me an odd glance is Maggie. In fact, she's glaring daggers at me which I know very well the reason why. It's cause Ellis is overly attentive to me today, which is stranger than the Pyramid of Giza turning to square. I know we're becoming closer and comfortable with each than before, but he wasn't that candy-sweet to me unlike today. Hmmm... Something's fishy is going on here... I bet my whole allowance for a month, they're hiding something huge from me and I need to find out what is it they're trying so hard to hide. I thought to myself inwardly.

“Where's Rafael?” I asked when I noticed that he's not around for dinner. I glanced at Ellis, just in time to see his expression darkened just briefly, then his facial expression became impassive, but I didn't let it go. “What's with the reaction?” I asked once again before he can even answer my first question.

“What?” He gave me an I-dunno-what-you're-talking-about stare that's building up an annoyance in my system which I found odd since I don't get annoyed or irritated that easily. I'm a person who rarely get's angry or become moody, even during my monthly period, but right now my blood is already boiling for just a simple matter and I can't control it.

“Are you trying to piss me off?” I don't know, but I suddenly feel hot or I feel like I'm on fire.

“Whoa! Zy, sweetie, calm down!” Ellis blurted out in a calm manner, but his eyes are telling me otherwise.

“Don't tell me to calm down!” I hissed in vehemence and that made me feel hotter, like literally hot. My skin feels like scorching hot. I closed my eyes to calm myself, but to no avail. My temper is flaring and I have no control over it.

“Max.” Ellis called out, almost a whisper. I whisked my head to Ellis, just in time to catch him, sending suspicious signals to Maxwell. I then turned my fiery eyes to Maxwell and I saw him cower when our eyes met. I wondered why...

“Max, what are you waiting for?! Calm her!” Maggie yelled in a panicky manner while staring at me.

“What's she talking about?” I asked angrily and stood up quite forcefully, knocking down the chair in the process.

“Zylen, don't panic. Take a deep breath.” Ellis instructed me calmly as he slowly walked toward me.

“What the hell are you talking about?!” I screamed and whisked my hands forward out of frustration, but I got mortified when a ball of bluish-white fire shot forward and hit Ellis, sending him flying backward a few meters away from the table. “Oh my God! Ellis!” I rushed toward him, but Maggie stopped me before I can even come close.

“Do not go near Ellis!” She spat out and weaved something transparent from her hands, which quickly enveloped her and Ellis in a circular shape. I recognized it as a shield. I saw Ellis made it yesterday, but why is she shielding herself and Ellis?

“Calm down, everyone.” I heard Rafael's voice from the door so I looked at him in confusion. “Zylen, try to calm yourself so you can control your power.” He ordered in a soothing voice.

“What power?” I still couldn't understand, but my temper has gone down a notch when I saw Ellis moved and sat up. Thanked God, he's fine! My heart felt relieved, but only to be replaced back with anger when Maggie went to hug him. My attention went back to Rafael when he spoke up again.

“Look at your hands, but don't panic.” He instructed calmly and I followed, feeling a sudden curiosity. I slowly stared down at my hands and I panicked, forgetting what he said when I saw that my hands are literally on fire!

“Oh my God! What's this?!” I wiggled my hands to get rid of the fire, but it only grew bigger. “Ahhhhh! It's hot! Help me, please!” I yelped in pain when the fire spread all over me, burning my clothes into ashes.

“Max, use your power now.” I heard Rafael urged Maxwell.

“Maxwell!” I heard Ellis' angry voice, who slightly shoved Maggie away from him since she's trying to prevent him from going out of her shield. “Get your bloody arse in focus! Use your bloody power, this instant!” He commanded Maxwell, who is still staring at me in a frozen state. I forced myself to look at Ellis in spite of the tormenting pain I'm experiencing at the moment and my heart ached to see burn marks around his naked chest where the front of his shirt turned to ashes. My tears started to fall from my eyes, realizing that I was the one who did that to him, but the tears evaporated before they can even flow on my cheeks. Then, surprisingly, I felt the fire around me grow weaker and so is the pain. “Maxwell, now!” Ellis snapped at him and finally he seemed like he regained his wits. He raised both of his hands and slowly a fog came out from his hands, which eventually turned into a gust of snow circling around his hands then he aimed it at me. I instinctively closed my eyes, waiting for another pain to strike me, but instead a cooling sensation engulfed me, soothing the searing pain I've felt. I opened my eyes to see the fire was already gone and was replaced by a white gust of air, surrounding me and slowly healing my burnt skin. When my wounds all healed up and the adrenaline rush died down, that's when I felt weak like I've used up all of my energy. My knees started to buckle, but before I dropped to the floor, Ellis moved inhumanely fast just in time to catch me.

“Are you alright?” He asked in a worried voice. I nodded weakly and he heaved a sigh of relief, knowing that I'm fine.

“I-Im so s-orry...” I mumbled almost indistinct since my lips are trembling from cold.

“Hush. It's not your fault...” He gazed down on me with eyes full of concern, then he turned his gaze to Axel, who seemed dazed about what had just transpired in the large dining area. “Give me your jacket.” Ellis ordered while he wrapped his body around me in a protective manner. That's when I noticed that I'm completely naked. My face flushed crimson and hid even more in Ellis' arms. Axel, realizing the situation, swiftly took off his jacket and threw it toward Ellis. Ellis grabbed the jacket immediately and wrapped it around me.

“Well, kids, let's clean this mess now. Shall we?” Rafael said and smiled at me reassuringly when he saw my distressed expression as Ellis carried me out of the room.

“What?! That is simply rubbish! We were not the ones responsible for creating this wad of mess!” I heard Maggie complained in an annoyed tone and shot me an angry stare before I was completely out of her sight. I sighed heavily several times.

“Are you sure you are alright?” Ellis asked in a worried tone after he placed me on the bed and covered my naked legs with a wool blanket. I just nodded, feeling tired to speak. “Do you feel anything unusual?” I shook my head, but I do feel something weird, something that I can't explain in words. Ellis, who seemed to have finally relaxed when he heard my answer, let out a sigh of relief. He then went to a room in the far east corner. It must be a closet or a dressing room since when he came back, he's already holding a black shirt. He gave it to me and turned his back on me. “Wear this instead. I do not like seeing you wear another man's clothes.” He mumbled, still his back on me. I blushed irrepressibly and I'm glad he can't see it since he's not facing me right now. I quickly took off the jacket and put on the shirt he gave me.

“I'm done.” I murmured afterward in a gruff voice. He turned around and sat beside me.

“Better.” He said while giving me a quick scan. I blushed again, but I'm glad Ellis seemed oblivious. “I'll ask Maggie later to lend you some clothes.” I just nodded. I bet Maggie will go ballistic. She seemed to hate me with every core of her being and borrowing her clothes is not a pretty good idea, but I can't go home wearing Ellis' shirt. That would make Mrs. Jenkins go hysterical, so I have no choice.

“What did just happen?” I asked afterward, recalling the recent incident. I cringed in fear just remembering it.

“Your power has awakened.”

“My power? I thought my awakening was over. I don't understand.”

“Yes. You were awakened as an Enchanter. However, your elemental power has yet to be fully awakened.”

“What? Elemental power? And that wasn't my fully awakened power? What will happen to me if it'll be fully awakened?” The thought of that scary and painful fire consuming me and burning my skin was enough to terrify me. Ellis, who seemed to have sensed my anxiety, took my hand in his and intertwined our fingers. That simple gesture of his calmed me and it made me feel secure.

“Every enchanter has their distinct elemental power. Air, Earth, Water, and Fire are the four basic elements of nature and the strongest among other elemental powers. As for your other question, your power will be twice as strong when it is fully awakened and so you need a Guardian to train with you so you won't lose control.”

“There are other elemental powers aside from those four? And I need to have a guardian? What kind of guardian are you referring to, anyway?” I asked in complete amazement.

“Yes. There are other elements such as Darkness, Lightning, Energy, Light, Plants, Ice, Poison, and Weather. These other seven elemental powers, however, are not as powerful as the four elements I have mentioned and you possess one of the most powerful elements which is fire. Even so, we don't know as of yet, what elemental manipulation you can do. That is where the Guardian comes in. All Enchanters have Guardians. They mainly serve as protectors as they possess a great strength and ability to be a shield. Moreover, they also act as a partner of the Enchanter, they serve and help them develop and control their powers.”

“Whoa! Having a Guardian seemed cool, but, am I supposed to be happy knowing I possess the scariest element?”

“I'm afraid not. It is a very strong power that even the holder may die if not careful and not strong enough to wield it, much less, control it.” He said in a serious manner which is quite scaring the hell out of me.

“Was that supposed to make me feel better or to scare me?” I asked, feeling annoyed and my skin started to prickle.

“Aw!” Ellis pulled his hand away from me and I was shocked to see red markings on his hand like it got burned.

“I'm sorry... Did I do that?” I looked at him worriedly.

“I'm fine. Don't worry, love.” He assured me and took my hand again, but I pulled it away, fearing that I might hurt him again. “I'm alright, Zy.” He gave me one of his dashing smiles and it melted my worries away and hearing him call me by my nickname for the first time made me smile.

“OK. How do I control this damn thing?” I asked afterward, my irritation is growing again, remembering my unwanted power. I wonder why I'm running out of patience, so easily when Patience is like my middle name.

“Well, first, learn to calm yourself. It is the basic thing that you have to do for a beginner because when you get angry, your power gets uncontrollable and the striking characteristics of Fire is aggressive and... Hot-tempered.” He stated in a cautious manner, careful not to offend me.

“So, that's the reason for my short temperament... I thought it was weird, but I guess it made sense now...” I muttered mostly to myself.

“Indeed. We need to control that or I will end up getting barbecued in no time.” He jested, but that doesn't sound a bit funny to me. In fact, It was mortifying. I wouldn't for a second, would think of hurting him or.. Or..

“Don't joke about that!” I burst out, not containing the anger I feel at the moment. My unwanted power is making me so utterly over sensitive and it feels so frustrating.

“Hey, calm down, love. I was just trying to make you laugh. I did not mean to offend you in any way.” He said in a soothing voice and wrapped his arms around me.

“I'm s-orry... I-I didn't mean to yell at you. It's just... It's just...”

“Hush, I understand. I will help you control it.” He leaned toward me and kissed my forehead. I closed my eyes and snuggled closer to him. His male scent is so beguiling and it is soothing my nerves that even my emotion became stable.

“OK... So, I believe, Maxwell is also an Enchanter?” I asked afterward.

“Yes. He is the youngest one from the clan of Wiltshire and has the power to yield the element of Ice. The clan of Wiltshire holds the bloodline to command the element of Ice, but every one has a different element of manipulation. As for Maxwell, he has Cryokinesis. It's a type of manipulation that can control ice, snow, and other forms of frozen water.” He explained while his eyes are fixed on me, trying to read my expression.

“I guess I'm not surprised, but a clan of witches---”

“Enchanters.” He corrected with a hint of smile creeping in his lips.

“Oh. Is there a difference?”

“But, of course, love. The witches are a bunch of aggressive sorcerers and they are quite infamous for putting a hex on someone they dislike. Although, not all witches are bad, they are more of an uncivilized group and uncontrollable which had led to generations and generations of false accusations and misunderstandings toward the clan of Enchanters.”

“I don't understand. I thought Enchanters and witches are different?”

“Yes, in a way. Though, the difference is relatively small which the townsfolk confused that the two are the same. I don't blame them as they are very much alike, more like identical twins which have the same appearance, yet with different characters like two peas in a pod. A cat vs. a tiger. Enchanters are tamed while Witches are fierce. They share similar abilities in terms of incantations, though, the Witches, on the other hand, don't have elemental powers, but they can still create any elemental powers using black magic which is forbidden by the rules of nature.”

“So, these witches, do they still exist?” I asked, feeling my curiosity perked up.

“Yes, same as you are. In fact, they are the common enemy of Enchanters.” He said with a sigh.

“That doesn't sound good.” I said with a sour face. “Why?”

“It started between two sisters, an identical twin to be exact. They were the ancestors of the Enchanters and the Witches. Esmerald was the mother of all Enchanters while Amelia was the mother of all Witches.” He narrated while looking at his watch.

“What happened? Why did they become enemies?”

“It's quite a long story, love. We will continue this discussion tomorrow. It's getting late. We still have a class tomorrow.”

“But I wanted to know the whole story.” I said with a pout and I was taken aback when he gave me a smack on the lips.

“I told you not to do that.” He said with a smirk.

“What do you mean?” I asked in confusion, my face is flushed.

“The pouting, love. I find it rather sexy.” He said with a wink which made me blush even more. “Wait here. I will ask Maggie to lend you some of her clothes, then I will drive you home.” He left right away after I nodded. I got bored of waiting so I got out of bed and looked around the enormous room. The room is vintage with so many antiques such as chandelier, vases, paintings, and medieval looking furniture. It's gorgeous like how gorgeous my Ellis is. I blushed and giggled when I realized how embarrassing my thought is, then my eyes came across something familiar or someone familiar. I leaned closer to the painting, but I still can't pinpoint why this person looks familiar to me.

“What are you doing?” I jumped when I heard Ellis' voice. I turned around immediately, feeling a bit embarrassed for getting caught, roaming around his room.

“I was just looking at this beautiful painting---Oh, and I wonder why this guy in the painting looks familiar to me. Who is he?”

“No one.” He replied in a clipped tone which I wonder if he is angry at me for wandering in his room aimlessly. “Here. Change into this. I will wait for you in the foyer and be hasty.” He said and left me again before I can even respond. I sighed and started changing my clothes. He's mad at me...

====####====

“I'm sorry.” I said as soon as we're in his car.

“Why are you apologizing?” He stared at me in confusion.

“Well, aren't you mad at me for looking at your stuffs in your room?”

“No. I was not, silly.” He smiled and pinched my nose.

“Oh. Sorry. I mean, I'm not sorry as in sorry. What I'm trying to say is, I'm sorry for saying sorry. Ah, I mean for thinking that you're mad at me.” I smacked my forehead for mumbling stupid things. I'm just glad he's not mad at me. I was surprised when I heard his hearty laughter all of a sudden.

“You are a funny one. I love that.” He said with a chuckle and started the car. I smiled. I'm happy that Ellis and I are fine.

“Oh, I just remembered!” I said all of a sudden which made Ellis stepped on the car's brakes and looked at me anxiously.

“What is it?” He asked with his green eyes fixed on me in an odd manner. I wonder why he is acting strange. What are you keeping from me, Ellis? I really don't like it when someone keeps a secret from me, especially when that person is Ellis, but I also don't want to force him to confide to me. I want him to do it voluntarily. So, I decided to let it go, for now.

“You told me you were going to show me something, but you didn't. What was it?”

“Oh, that.” He said, sounding relieved. Now I'm definitely sure he is hiding something from me.

“Yeah. What else would it be?” I tried to hide my sarcasm, but I guessed he sensed it since he stared at me like he's analyzing my mind through my facial expression before he spoke up.

“I was not able to show it to you earlier due to the not so fortunate events, but do not worry, I took it with me. It's in the back seat.”

“A book?” I asked when I saw an old, thick book sitting on the car's seat in the back.

“It's called, Chronicles of the Enchanters and the Guardians. Everything you wanted to know us is written in that book.” I grabbed the book curiously from the back seat only to have my jaw dropped.

“What's this?” My face contorted in utter dismay. I can't even read the title well, much more the whole thing and it's not even written in Latin. The inscriptions looked like from an ancient times.

“It's written in Lepontic. The oldest attested Celtic language from the 6th century BC. It was first written by Esmerald herself more than 2000 years ago and was passed down and continued by her descendants until this day.”

“So, how am I gonna read this then?” I looked at him with my brow creased.

“There's a magic word only the Enchanters and the Guardians know. It's a spell of enlightenment.” He smiled at me and continued, “Whisper the word, Illustratio. The inscriptions will change into a language that you desire.” I hesitantly followed him.

Illustratio...” As I whispered the simple incantation, the ancient inscriptions slowly vanished and appeared once again in English language. “Wow! Awesome!” I clapped my hands in awe and excitement. Ellis just smiled at me in amusement. I started flipping some pages and came across an interesting page. The passage says; A Guardian pledged to protect an Enchanter is bound to be betrothed together. “Um, Ellis... I wonder since I forgot to ask you.”

“Yes?”

“Are you an Enchanter or a Guardian?” My heart is thumping nervously while waiting for his answer. If Ellis is my Guardian then we will be bound in marriage.

“A Guardian.”
