Short Story

**The Last Goodbye**

She knew it was time to say goodbye. She had been dreading this moment for months, ever since the doctor told her that he had terminal cancer and there was nothing they could do. She had tried to make the most of their remaining time together, but it was never enough. She wanted to hold him forever, to tell him how much she loved him, to thank him for everything he had done for her.

But now, he was lying on the hospital bed, barely conscious, hooked up to machines that beeped and whirred. She could see the pain in his eyes, the struggle to breathe, the fading of his life. She held his hand, feeling his weak pulse, and leaned in to whisper in his ear.

"I love you, my darling. You are the best thing that ever happened to me. You made me happy, you made me laugh, you made me feel alive. You are my soulmate, my partner, my friend. I will never forget you, I will never stop loving you. You will always be in my heart."

She kissed his forehead, feeling his warmth, and then looked into his eyes. He smiled faintly, and mouthed the words "I love you too". He squeezed her hand gently, and then let go. She felt a sudden emptiness, a coldness, a silence. He was gone.

She sobbed uncontrollably, burying her face in his chest. She wished she could go with him, to be with him in the afterlife. She felt like she had lost a part of herself, a part that she could never get back. She felt alone, broken, hopeless.

She didn't know how long she stayed there, holding him, crying for him. She didn't want to leave him, to let him go. She wanted to stay with him forever.

But she knew she had to say goodbye.

She kissed him one last time, and whispered "Goodbye, my love". She got up from the bed, and walked out of the room.

She left behind her heart.
