PROLOGUE

"MAXYYYY WAKE UPPP!!" cried Zera. I woke up to her jumping on my stomach. I groaned and threw a pillow at her. Then I realized, she's in my room.
"MOTHER!! WHY DID YOU LET ZERA INTO MY ROOOMMM!!??" I cried out while trying to fend off Zera.
"SHE'S BEEN IN YOUR ROOM BEFORE!!" my mother yelled back. I groaned.
"BUT I'M TEN NOW!!!" I yelled back. Zera plopped down next to me on my bed.
"So?" she asked crossing her arms. Her naturally pink hair was tied up into two pigtails. I pulled on one of them.
"So, we are older now. I need my privacy," I said. She stuck her tongue out at me.
"You're just a boy," she said.
"A GROWN boy," I said pulling back my covers and putting on a T-shirt.
"Eh, you don't count as a boy to me," she said looking around my room. Well, you count as a girl to me, I thought wistfully. I sighed and looked away from her. I couldn't get those chocolate brown eyes out of my mind. It hardly wasn't fair considering I was ten and already in love. It wasn't fair at all. I pulled on my jeans and threw my backpack onto my shoulder.
"Let's go, Zera," I said. She looked away from my window and smiled over at me.
"Coming!" she said cheerfully. How can she be so cheerful this early in the morning? I wondered yawning. I grabbed my lunch and ran out the door while my mom yelled, "HAVE A GREAT DAY HONEY!" out the door. Zera skipped out ahead of me. She was waving something around. She was saying something about how special it was.
"It's just a piece of paper," I said. She gasped and hugged it to her chest.
"JUST a piece of PAPER!!?? Maxxyyyy!" she whined in the voice that annoyed me the most. She smiled when she saw my scrunched up face.
"Were you not listening when I was talking about how important it is?" she asked cocking her head to one side.
"No," I replied walking past her. Her jaw dropped. She stood in the same place for so long I had to wait until she was breathing again.
"Well, I'll just tell you again," she finally said skipping ahead of me again. I sighed and rolled my eyes. Then she went on and on about how this piece of paper was so important again. Then the wind started to pick up and I looked out at the ocean which laid beyond a large cliff just beyond the road. She was saying something and moving her arms around animatedly, like usual, and then the piece of paper flew from her hands and off the cliff. I looked at her and I remembered her saying that it was important. It was such an important piece of paper. So I ran out and got it for her. I reached over the cliff. My feet slipped off some rocks and I grasped at air. I looked up and saw that Zera grabbed the piece of paper. I smiled. The last thing I heard before I plunged into the icy water where there was sharp pointed rocks was, "MAAXXYYYY!!!" her voice sounded terrified. The ice water engulfed me. I started to sink. I couldn't breathe. I breathed in water and I hit my head against a rock that I couldn't see in the dark water. Then all I could see was black. Suddenly, I was somewhere else. I didn't exactly know where but it was all black. A woman with shimmering white hair and wearing a long white gown. She floated over to me. She lifted her head to reveal piercing black eyes.
"Max," she whispered. I stared at awe at her.
"Who are you?" I asked. She smiled and chuckled silently to herself.
"Someone you'll never want to meet in real life," she said smiling harshly. I breathed in quickly.
"What do you want?" I asked. Still smiling she turned towards the darkness.
"The same thing that you desire... The chance to remain alive." Her gaze turned towards a vile that she pulled out of her coat's pocket, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. I tried to moved my limbs but found that the strength had left me when the lady plunged a needle into my neck.
A month later, Zera was sitting in the pews of a local church, dressed in a new black gown her mother bought. She was choking back tears and refused to go up to the stand where my photo was displayed. Her father, who was a police officer, also tried to help her by giving her a german shepard puppy that was part of the training group that was cancelled due to inadequate funding. Down at the stand there was no body however, because it was believed to have fallen out to sea...

CHAPTER 1
ZERA

I came home from school that day and opened the front door expecting my loyal german shepard, Max, to greet me as usual. He looked extremely happy today.
"MAXXYYY!" I cried out opening my arms so he could jump into them. I fell over as he licked my face.
"You are so heavy," I groaned pushing him off.
"Zera," my mom smiled at me from the kitchen, "come help me with dinner."
"Okay," I replied happily. While walking towards the kitchen, I went past a picture of Max, my human best friend not my dog, and I. He looked so annoyed in that picture while I looked like my happy self, my arm wrapped around his shoulders. I had changed since that day. I chuckled at my pigtails that he used to always pull on. My hair is longer now, down past my shoulders. I looked older and the old spark in my eyes was gone. It left when the old Max left. I sighed.
"Zera, honey?" asked my mom as the new Max nudged my leg.
"Coming," I said taking one last glance at the picture. The past is the past. I can't keep blaming myself, I thought.

CHAPTER 2
MAX

Food. Food. Food. Food. Food. Beg. Beg. Beg. Beg. Give me your food. Give me your food. Itch. Scratch. Itch. Scratch. What is that thing on my butt? CHASE CHASE! Bite. OOOOO, ZERA!! LICK! LICK! LICK! Ow. FOOOOOOOODDD!!! Following Zera into her room. Looking through boxes. She's not happy. Hmmm? Her face is wet. ZERA WHAT'S WROOONNNGG!!?? LICK LICK LICK!! OOOOO!! Paper!! AWWWW she put it away. WHERE DID EVERYTHING GOOO?! AWWW BEDTIME??! Where's my ball?

CHAPTER 3
ZERA'S DREAM

I saw him. He was walking towards me. His bright blue eyes shining mischieviously. He looked older too. He smiled as his light brown hair blew lightly in the breeze.
"Max," I whispered. I was suddenly overcome with sadness and joy at the same time. He smiled and grabbed my hand.
"What happened to your pigtails, Zera? I miss pulling on them," Max said. I wiped my eyes.
"Zera? Are you okay? What's wrong?" asked Max suddenly.
"I'm so sorry, Maxy. I caused this. If it wasn't for..." I said drifting off when he put his finger to my lips.
"Zera, I've always been with you and I'll always be there for you. But my time is running up," said Max. He looked back at darkness.
"Maxy?" I asked. He looked at me suddenly frightened.
"You must find me, Zera! Before I disappear forever," he said his voice getting smaller.
"Max!" I screamed out into the darkness.
"MAX!!" I sat up straight in bed. Max, my german shepard, lifted his head and started wagging his tail. He looked at me with confusion. I looked back at his bright blue eyes. My dog reminded me so much of Max, the dead human. I sighed as I looked out the window. Find him? Where? I scratched Max behind his ears. His tail started thumping harder.
"It was just a dream, wasn't it Max? He's dead. If he wasn't, he'd come back to me," I whispered. I hugged my german shepard. Max, my dog, was named after Max, my best friend. I got him the day of Max's funeral. And because the puppy reminded me so much of Max, I named him Max. This german shepard was different. It was like he WAS Max. You didn't see many german shepards with bright blue eyes that were the same color as Max's. Ugh, thinking of both Maxes were confusing me. I looked at Max, my dog. No, a human can't just turn into a dog, I thought shaking the thought from my head. I smiled at my dog, Max, and hugged his head.
"Got to go to school!" I said. I passed by my desk and stopped and looked at the paper that caused Max's death. I picked it up to look at it. It was the permission form to enter the elementary talent show. I smiled to myself remembering how I made such a big deal about it. A single tear rolled down my cheek. I wiped it away harshly.
"The time for tears is gone," I whispered. Max's ears were up and were twitching listening to something and his head was cocked to the side watching me with those blue eyes. I smiled.
"ZERA SCHOOL!" yelled my mom. I grabbed the keys to my car off of my dresser and dropped the piece of paper. I grabbed my backpack and ran out of my room.

CHAPTER 4
MAX

The piece of paper floated down towards the red brown hardwood floor. Hmm? I jumped down from the bed. Sniff. Sniff. Old paper. I turned my head in one way. My eyes widened as everything started to come back to me. 'I reached for the piece of paper as it flew off of the cliff. My foot slipped. I heard Zera yell, "MAXXYYY" before I plunged into the icy waters.' Where has my mind been this whole time? Why am I a dog? OHMYGOD! I'VE BEEN A DOG THIS WHOLE TIME! I put a paw on the paper that was so important to Zera at the time. I'm a dog... Then everything rushed back to me. The lady who was extremely creepy. I shuddered just thinking about it. What was it that I needed to remember the most? She said something when she plunged that stupid needle into my neck. My eyes widened as I remembered.
"You have until the end of your little dog life to make the love of your life realize who you are or you'll disappear forever..."
"The love of my life?" I remember asking, my voice so weak.
"Zera," she whispered.
....Zera... ZERA NEEDS TO REALIZE THAT I'M A DOG??! HOW IN THE WORLD AM I SUPPOSED TO ACCOMPLISH THAT??! ESPECIALLY SINCE I WASTED SIX YEARS OF MY LIFE DOING DOG THINGS!! .....I wasted six years of my dog life. OH GREAT! I've only got eight years. EIGHT YEARS. I went to the doorframe and started banging my head against it. Whats. Wrong. With. Me? Whats. Wrong. With. Me? Whats. Wrong. With. Me? Then Zera's mom came up.
"MAX! What are you doing? You're going to HURT yourself!" she exclaimed. I just looked up at her and then went back to banging my head against the doorframe. Then she pulled on my collar and pushed me back into Zera's room and closed the door. AND WHY DID ZERA MAKE MY DOG FORM BE NAMED MAX!!?? THAT MAKES EVERYTHING HARDER TO MAKE HER REALIZE THAT I'M MAX!! 'CAUSE TECHNICALLY TO HER I AM MAX!! JUST A DOG THOUGH!! Grrrrr.... She's STILL extremely stupid. DOES NOTHING CHANGE??! I sighed. I jumped on her bed and I looked out the window. I'm a dog. But I'm still Max. How am I supposed to make her see that?

CHAPTER 5
ZERA

I parked my cherry red beetle and walked into the school. Thank GOD I wasn't late! I ran into my best friend Lily. Behind her was Madelyn, Mickey, and Bella.
"Zera? Are you okay?" asked Lily. I smiled trying to hide the pain that I still felt from my dream.
"I'm fine," I lied. Bella just looked at me and slapped the back of my head.
"Don't lie to us," she said threatenly. I held up my hands in defeat.
"Sorry, sorry. I just had another dream of him," I whispered. Madelyn looked at me in disbelief.
"It's been six years, Zera. Sometimes you just need to move on," she said. I sighed.
"Yeah, I know but today would be-"
"Exactly six years," ended Mickey. I nodded. Mickey was also sort of friends with Max. We both felt the pain of losing him. Lily and Bella moved a year after he...left. Madelyn moved here two years ago, so she really knew nothing of him. She just knew that we were best friends and he died. Lily hugged me.
"I know how hard it is, but Madelyn's right. You have to let go sometime. Or at least think happily whenever you think of him," said Lily making me look into her spring green eyes. I rolled my eyes and nodded.
"I'm always right," joked Madelyn. I nodded.
"You usually are," I said linking arms with her. Bella linked arms with my other arm and smiled.
"Let's stop talking about this. It's getting me down," she said flipping her blondish brownish reddish hair. I looked back at Mickey who was looking out the school window, her blue gray eyes looking sad and were filling up with tears quickly. She blinked quickly and the moisture was gone. Mickey never cried in front of people. Even if she was extremely sad. She put her golden blonde hair up into a ponytail and started following us slowly. Lily and I said bye to the others as we walked into our first block class. We took our seats next to each other.
"So?" she asked as I set my backpack down next to my seat.
"So...what?" I asked.
"What happened in your dream?" she asked excitedly.
"I can't remember some of it. But at the end of it, he said he was running out of time and that I need to find him or he'll leave forever," I said my eyebrows knitted in confusion. If he's always been here for me, wouldn't I be able to see him? Or at least feel him? Lily looked at my scrunched up face.
"Zera, don't worry about it. It's just a dream right?" she asked. I nodded.
"Yeah..." I said. But it felt like he was serious, I thought. I shook the thought out of my head. Lily got out her notebook.
"So, how's Max?" she asked nonchalantly. I just looked at her in disbelief. Seriously? I thought.
"Um, dead..?" I said. She looked at me confused, then she started laughing.
"Zera, I meant your cute puppy!" she exclaimed. I laughed.
"He's not much of a puppy anymore, he's six. But I think I scared him this morning. I did kind of scream his name," I said smiling shyly. Lily laughed. Then the bell rang. A folded up piece of paper landed on my desk. Lily was making hilarious motions telling me to read it. I opened it up.

Justin's been staring at you this whole blooock! ~Lily

I rolled my eyes and looked back at the guy with deep green eyes and golden blonde hair. He was staring at me.

He's probably just staring at the clock.

I placed the note onto Lily's desk.

UHH NO!! OOO HE'S WRITING SOMETHING

Yeah, like notes?

I saw Lily roll her eyes when she read that. Then she gave me a look. Suddenly another note was on my desk. I opened it up.

Wanna go out sometime? ~Justin.

..............NO, is what I wanted to say. But I had to get over Max. Maybe Justin could help that. So, even though I knew I would probably regret it, I wrote "yes". I slipped the note back to him. Lily smiled and looked at the two of us. Then she winked and finally starting paying attention to the teacher. I looked out the window. Max, I'm sorry. But maybe this is good for me, I thought....isn't it?

CHAPTER 6
MAX

STUPID PAWS CAN'T EVEN HOLD A PENCIL!! She couldn't make me a MONKEY FOR GOD'S SAKE??! Stupid lady. All this just looked like scribbles. This wasn't going to help at all. LADY, COME HERE AND FACE ME NOW!!! YOU STUPID LADY!! I thought angrily. There was a flash of light and suddenly that stupid lady was standing in front of me looking bored. I growled. She looked at her polished nails and flashed a smile at me.
"Has your dumb little self figured out that you're the 'dead' Max?" she asked smiling, her piercing black eyes boring holes into me. She put air quotes around dead.
"YOU IDIOT GIRL!! WHY DID YOU MAKE ME SUCH A DUMB DOG??!" I yelled at her. She laughed at my reaction.
"DUUUHHH, I'm evil over here," she said pointing to herself. She looked me up and down.
"You obviously haven't convinced her that you're MAX Max," she said, an amused expression on her face. I growled.
"I haven't figured it out MYSELF until NOW," I growled at her. She looked at me surprised and then she started laughing hysterically.
"WOW, you're a DUMB dog," she said. I looked away angrily.
"Most dogs are DUMB," I retorted and glared at her.
"Yeah, they are," she said snickering. She took a seat on Zera's bed. I narrowed my eyes at her. Then she saw the pencil and the paper with the scribbles and started laughing hysterically.
"You..tried...to...write...her..a...LETTER?!" she cried out during gasps of air because she was laughing so hard. I tried crossing my paws and gave up.
"Yes, but I can't write with these paws," I said standing on my hind legs and looking at them.
"Dogs aren't made so they can write letters," pointed out the lady. Stupid lady, I thought.
"I DON'T KNOW YOUR NAME!!" I yelled at her. She sighed and rolled her eyes.
"I'm Arukas," she said smiling evilly. I waved a paw at her in a dismissive way.
"Whatever, whatever, whatever," I said trying to figure out how I could hold the pencil with my paw. Arukas sighed.
"You're an idiot," she sighed.
"And your stupid," I said immediately without thinking. She pointed at the pencil that I was trying to pick up.
"You could put that in your mouth," she said. I looked at her.
"I knew that," I said. Then I narrowed my eyes at her.
"Why are you helping me?" I asked. She sighed and rolled her eyes.
"This is actually entertaining me," she replied.
"Whatever," I mumbled because the pencil was in my mouth. I moved it around so it could write a letter. I spit out the pencil and tried to smile at it.
"Good," I said. Arukas came over and picked it up and raised an eyebrow. She turned it so I could see it.

"What's wrong with it?" I asked.
"It's hardly readable," she said.
"I'm sure she'll be able to read it," I retorted. She shrugged. Then she pointed to the hearts after my name.
"What's that?" she asked.
"Nothing," I responded quickly.
"Are they supposed to be hearts?" she asked looking at it more closely.
"No, not reeeaaallllyyy," I said. If I wasn't a dog, I would be blushing.
"They ARE hearts!" she exclaimed.
"NO!" I exclaimed. She just laughed and put it back on the desk.
"Well, I know Zera will appreciate it," I mumbled.
"What was that idiot dog?" she asked putting a hand to her ear. That's when we heard the front door slam. I heard Zera's voice yell, "I'M HOME!" I froze. I jumped down from her desk. I looked at Arukas.
"Aren't you going to leave?" I asked. She shook her head no.
"She won't be able to see me unless I want her too, idiot dog," she said getting up and sitting on her swivel chair. Zera's bedroom door opened. She smiled at me.
"MAXXYYY!" she cried out. SHE KNOWS IT'S ME!!
"How's my favorite dog?" she asked hugging my head. Are you kidding me? She STILL doesn't know. She dropped her textbooks on top of the letter on her desk. Dang. Arukas kept giggling.
"You are such an idiot dog," she said laughing. I growled at her. Zera jumped at the noise.
"What's wrong, Maxy? No one's in here. What's wrong with you? Are you sick?" she asked. Even though her big chocolate brown eyes looked concern, there was something in them that was missing. Her usual spark was gone. What caused it to go away? Zera went and sat on her bed and looked out the window as it started to rain. I jumped onto her bed trying to send her telepathic messages. I hate being a stupid dog.

CHAPTER 7
ZERA

I stroked Max, my dog's, head. It started to thunder.
"Want to hear about my day, Maxy?" I asked him. He started to wag his tail, as if he knew exactly what I was saying to him.
"Well, as you know Maxy, today's the day where it was exactly six years since my best friend, Max died. Mickey almost cried and you know her, she never cries," I said. I looked at Max curiously. His ears pricked up at the sound of Mickey's name. Usually his ears prick up at the sound of food or his name. That's weird.
"Yeah, and then Madelyn was like get over him already! He's DEAD," I shook my head and smiled. Max rolled his eyes... The same way Max did. What was going on with my dog that made him remind me of Max? And he was putting a lot more attention today than usual. I wonder...
"And a boy named Justin asked me out," I said eyeing Max for a reaction. He looked mad. Really mad. Could a dog look mad? I think I even heard a growl come from his mouth.
"I said yes," I whispered. Max looked at me, he looked hurt. He took his head out from under my hand and jumped off the bed. He sat down on the floor and just looked up at me. I looked out the window.
"This will be good for me, Maxy. It'll help me get over Max," I sighed. Max cocked his head to the side.
"Max, I miss you," I whispered. I closed my eyes as tears streaked down my face. I felt Max, my dog, jump back on the bed and felt him lick up my tears. I hugged him and put my chin on his head.
"At least I have one Max," I said opening my eyes and looking into his blue eyes. I saw more emotion in those eyes than I have ever seen in his eyes before. I felt like I was looking into something quite familiar. Something that I haven't seen in a long time. It showed...love.
"Max..?" I whispered putting more feeling in than I usually did.
"ZERA! JUSTIN'S HERE FOR YOU!" my mom called from downstairs. I looked away from my dog. This day was just making me delusional. Max growled at hearing the name Justin. I wiped my tears that I didn't realize were running down my cheeks.
"JUST A SECOND!" I yelled down the stairs. I looked into the mirror and reapplied a little eyeliner around my somewhat big chocolate brown eyes. I grabbed my purse and ran out of my room. Max, following closely behind. Justin looked so handsome standing there awkwardly in front of the door. His green eyes flickered up at me and he smiled. I can do this, I thought. I took a deep breath and smiled back. My mom was grinning from ear to ear. My dad, being a police officer, unfortunately wasn't there. That's when Max went berserk. He growled and then attacked Justin.
"MAX!" I yelled. Justin left our house screaming.
"JUSTIN!" I cried out. I looked at Max and he looked like he was smiling smugly and slightly shrugging. What's going on with him today?
"Mom, did you get a new dog?" I asked my mother looking over to her. My mother just glared at the space between the door and the dog.

CHAPTER 8
MAX

I looked up into her eyes trying so hard to make her realize it was me.
"Max..?" she asked her chocolate eyes widening. YES, SHE REALIZES IT!!!
"ZERA! JUSTIN'S HERE!!" yelled Zera's mom.
"JUST A SECOND!" she yelled back. Justin?! I growled. I stared at her angrily while she reapplied eyeliner. You don't need it, I thought angrily. She brushed her skirt. Wear sweats, I thought, he might not think you're pretty in them but I DO! Akuras rolled her eyes where she was sitting on Zera's swivel chair.
"Don't do anything stupid," she called out as I followed Zera down the stairs.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," I said to her in my brain. She rolled her eyes. As were going down the stairs, I saw the look he gave Zera. Oh no you don't you idiot. She's mine and forever will be, I thought angrily. So I growled and started chasing him out of the house.
"MAX!" yelled Zera. Justin left screaming.
"JUSTIN!" cried out Zera desperately. I came back after chasing him away. I smiled smugly and shrugged. Her eyes widened.
"What's wrong with you today?" she whispered. She looked over at her mother.
"Mom, did you get a new dog?" she asked. There was silence as Zera's mom glared at the space between the door and I. Her mom patted her shoulder, then.
"It's okay. He was just trying to protect you," said Zera's mom. Yeeeaaah...THAT'S what I was doing... Zera looked at me confused. Zera, it's me. Please realize it. It's me, Max. She blinked a couple times.
"Max..." she whispered. Then she shook her head and looked away from me. IT'S ME?! WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO FRIKIN THICKHEADED ZERA?! I bounded back up the stairs. Arukas was sitting on her bed in darkness. The moonlight pooled in from the window.
"Why is she so BLIND?!" I exclaimed while bounding into the room. Arukas raised an eyebrow.
"Well, she thinks its you, but she doesn't think it's possible and so she shakes the idea out of her mind each and every time," she said simply. I stared at her.
"You know what she's thinking?" I asked.
"Yeah. I know what EVERYONE'S thinking," she said. She narrowed her eyes at me.
"How did you think I knew exactly what you were saying without barking?" she asked. Now that I thought about it, I haven't barked at all.
"Weirdo," I said laying my head in between my paws.
"Are you forever going to call me names?" Arukas asked.
"Yup, until you turn me back into a human," I said.
"Not happening. Misery loves company," she said. She looked sad for a second. Then her face hardened. Hmmm. Somebody has had a bad past. Eh, I don't care.
"Then I guess misery will just have to deal with the namecalling," I said tiredly. She scrunched up her face and rolled her eyes. Zera opened the door letting in the golden light flow in. She turned on the light and gasped staring straight at Arukas.
"Who the heck ARE YOU?! AND WHY ARE YOU IN MY ROOM?!" she cried out. I lifted my head.
"She can see you?!" I exclaimed. Arukas shrugged at me.
"WHY ARE YOU SHRUGGING?! YOU DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE?!" cried out Zera. I shook my head sadly. She can be so STUPID sometimes.

CHAPTER 9
ZERA

"No, I know who I am. I'm Arukas. And I'm a dead witch," she ended smiling. I just stared at her. Is she serious? Well she did have that kind of glowing aura around her. And her eyes really freaked me out. They were piercing black and I couldn't tell if she was there or not because they always looked glassy.
"Witches don't exist," I whispered. She laughed.
"How do you think your little friend-?" she said cutting off of that. Max, my dog, lifted up his head in surprise.
"My little friend..?" I asked her.
"Nothing," she said looking out the window.
"Max..? Are you talking about Max?" I asked desperately. She looked at me, a twinkle in her eye. She was talking about Max.
"What did you do to Max?" I asked slightly angry. I took a step towards her. Her eyes widened at my advance.
"Didn't you get the dream I sent you? You have to find him darling," she said smiling. She twinkled her fingers and then faded away.
"Oh no you don't! COME BACK HERE! You stupid WITCH!" I yelled at my now empty bed. I collapsed to the ground and hugged my knees.
"How am I supposed to find you, Max?" I whispered looking up at my bed. Then Max, my dog, started barking and standing on his hind legs and waving his paws about.
"What's up with you today Maxy?" I asked patting his head and looking at him strangely. Gosh, he was just acting abnormal today. I think I just saw him sigh and he stared at me the way Max used to, again.
"Quit it, Maxy. You're messing with my brain. I can't be in love with my DOG!" I exclaimed putting my head into my hands. Then I heard Max's laughter, but it was hoarser and sounded like coughing but I could tell Max's laugh from anywhere even if it HAD been six years. I picked my head up. Max, my dog, WAS LAUGHING AT ME. Is this possible? And he had Max's laugh. What's going on? "You have to find me..." came across my head. I shook it out of my brain. He can't be a dog! But the similarities were so...similar. He couldn't stop laughing. Then he looked up at me and rolled his eyes. Just. Like. Max. OHMYGOD THIS ISN'T HAPPENING! IT CAN'T BE!
"Max..?" I asked looking at him. He looked up and I think he tried to smile. MAX! My brain screamed. Is it Max? It has to be Max! Then he looked over at my desk.
"What is it?" I asked. I walked over to my desk. Oh, forgot to put away my textbooks, I thought. I lifted them up and there was a letter in such bad handwriting. Max started trying to whistle and looking around.
"You know how to write?" I asked. I picked up the letter and read it.
"OHMYGOD MAXY! MAX HAS BEEN HERE! IT MUST'VE BEEN HIS GHOST!!" I cried out hugging the letter to my chest.

CHAPTER 10
MAX

I stared at her in disbelief. And here I thought she finally realized that I, ME, was Max. Why her? Didn't she ask if I wrote it before she picked it up? What? Did that TOTALLY leave her mind?! It was so much easier to love her when I was a human. Why DO I love her? She's so CLUELESS. UUUGGGHHH. I watched her dance around with the letter that was from "Max's ghost". I rolled my eyes. I'M RIGHT HERE, ZERA!! OPEN YOUR EYES!! NO, OPEN YOUR STUPID MIND!!! Grrrr...she's annoying me.
"MAXY MAXY MAXY!" she kept singing while dancing around her room. I sighed and lay down again. There's no use. I should just disappear forever into darkness. It sounds better than dealing with her. She fell onto her bed and sighed. After a while, her body rose and fell slowly. She was at peace. I sighed. That's when Arukas appeared again.
"I really thought she was going to figure it out this time," she whispered. I sighed deeply.
"She's such a stupid girl," I said sadly. Arukas smiled down at me.
"So you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to make things a little more interesting," she said grinning. I looked up at her.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"I'm giving you six months instead. You're going to develop terminal cancer in a month. And then in 6 months, you're going to die. And disappear forever," she said smiling. Are. You. Kidding. Me??!!
"WHAT??!" I yelled barking out loud by accident. Zera's easy breathing stopped for a second. My heart was pounding in my ears. Then it went back to her steady breathing. I let out a huge breath.
