Dallas, Texas

Adrenaline rushed through my veins as empty plains flew past my eyes, as I sat upon my horse, Rose, she is a black stallion, beautiful black, glossy hair, she has scarlet hair on her forehead in the shape of a rose, hence her name Rose. She ran, I was bouncing on her back, my helmet rested upon my head. I held on to the strap. I whispered into her ear, “Come on baby, come on.” She sprinted along the wooden fence, the sun shone on my face, I love the sight of the trees to my right. The sounds of birds chirping, bugs buzzing, and wind rushed passed my ears. The smell of hay and grass trickled up my nose, the rough texture of the leather strap on my hands. The harsh winds, slapped against my face. I heard Rose’s hooves hit the ground. We came across the end, I said, “STOP! Heal!” Rose skidded to a stop. I let myself relax on her back. I closed my eyes and listened to the sounds around me. I heard birds chirping, horses neighing, bugs buzzing, and the wind blowing. I felt the harsh rays of the sun hit my face.
I felt Rose’s thick hair against my hands, the wind flying through my hair. It was relaxing. I got up and slid my foot out of the rings. I hopped off of Rose and I gave her some hay, she made funny munching sounds so I chuckled and she just looked at me. We stared at each other for a second and I turned around and called, “LUCY!”
I heard the footsteps of my sister running through the pasture; she slid to a stop not 10 inches in front of me. I laughed for a moment and reached out to hug her, but instead I tagged her, “YOU’RE IT!” She stood there for a moment confused, when she got the message she whined and wriggled. I sprinted out of the barn and she sprinted after me. We were both track stars, I was faster though. My dad and brothers were hunting deer in the forest next to us. Dad is teaching Kevin how to hunt since he is only 10 years old. Lucy was shouting behind me asking me to slow down, but I knew that If I did, she would get me. I ran to the closest and only tree in between the fence and climbed it. Lucy was at the bottom of the white oak and since it was fall, the normally green leaves were now orange, yellow and red. It was an amazing sight. I jumped out of the tree and ran with Lucy close behind me. I ran to the fence and jumped over it into the forest. Branches and leaves slapped my face as I ran; I almost tripped over the roots of trees and weeds maybe two, three… ten times. I heard Lucy’s footsteps behind me, I heard a scream. I turned around and saw Lucy on the floor, I started laughing. I thought she was too, but as I walked closer, I saw she was crying, or so I thought. I ran to her and helped her up. She exclaimed, “TAG! YOU’RE IT!” She started laughing. She ran toward the lake. I was older and knew all the shortcuts to it. Ah, the lake, it was where I would go to, to think and relax. It was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. The water was a magnificent clear blue, you could see the bottom of it, on tree that surrounded the lake had an outer limp and tied to it was a rope swing and rocks so we could climb onto it. Tulips were everywhere. I was my own personal beach. The was an opening through the woods to the lake and I ran through it and ran into a spider web. I squealed for a second. I hid behind the rocks until I heard Lucy run by. She called for me. I kept quiet until I saw her in front of me. I jumped out of my hiding spot and tagged her. She said, with sarcasm, “Oh Darn!” I wrapped my arm around her neck and we laughed. Lucy asked, “Can we go for a swim?” looking at the water with excitement. “Sure!” I replied. We took our clothes off and I climbed on the rock to the swing, I jumped into the water and splashed Lucy. We squealed and laughed as we splashed each other. My beautiful, long, golden-brown hair was wet and so was Lucy’s. A couple hours later, we walked home.

At Home

Later that night, I was sitting at the dinner table with my family of six. I had two brothers and one other sister, I am the oldest, 17; my brother, John, is the second oldest, 15; my sister, Lucy, is the third oldest, 14; and Kevin, he is the youngest, only 10. We had a feast, it was pork and snitzel. We are an Italian-Spanish(Puerto Rican)-German family. For desert we had patelios, hence the Puerto Rican heritage. I asked, “Mom?”
“Yes?” she replied.
“Do you think we can ever go to Italy?” I asked.
“Sure, maybe two summers from now…”
“Why so specific?” I wondered.
“Um… It’s a surprise.” I was excited, I wanted to know, no, I must know.
I was excited all during dinner. Even when I was eating snitzel, my favorite food, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. When I went to bed I lay awake imagining where we were going, the possibilities: Spain, Germany, France, England, Greece, etc. They were all gorgeous places although I’ve never been. I’ve only seen pictures. They were all beautiful. I finally fell asleep. The next morning my mom told me that she walked into my room last night and saw me smiling. I blushed because it was embarrassing. My brothers started laughing at me. I yelled at them but they didn’t listen. I said, “Mom!”
“Yes dear?” she replied.
“Tell them to be quiet!”
“Kids, don’t laugh at your sister!” She said turning to John and Kevin.
That night I waited until my mom and dad finished drinking and were tired enough, and I asked, “Mom. Where are we going this summer?” She muttered lazily, “Spain…” I held my breath and ran to my room, my face turned red.

Escape

I ran. I escaped the treacherous prison of the lab on an isolate island. I was the only one here, or so I thought. I pushed branches out of my way, I jumped over the roots of trees, I ran through thorny bushes getting bloody scratches all over me until I came across an empty pasture. I ran faster and faster until suddenly I felt something pull me back and I was in the air. I looked around because I thought someone, or something, got me, but instead, I saw wings. My back felt as if a knife was being driven down it. I cried out in pain, I plunged back toward the earth, my body hit the ground like a rock, I thought I was dead.
I felt something touch me, I slowly opened my eyes, blinking to the bright sunlight. I saw a flash of deep brown hair run passed my eyes. I was startled, I sat up quickly and looked around. My left shoulder hurt. It was agonizing pain, I looked at my shoulder and saw black and green feathers, I notice a win, it was my wing. I looked around and saw the hair again. I yelled, “WAIT! PLEASE HELP ME!” The creature stopped, it turned toward me, her eyes were bloodshot. I gasped. She came towards me, I staggered back a couple feet before she was just inches away from my face. I held my breath and closed my eyes really tight.
In a perky voice, she said, “Hey!”
I was shocked, “Hi?” I questioned… (To be continued…)
