I heartily thank Rev. Dr. Victor E. Nelson, the founding president and general overseer of VICTORY EVANGELISTIC MINISTRIES INT’L, Nigeria for accepting the challenge to be a mentor to a slow learner like myself. It has truly been a great moment of wisdom serving under him. May the Almighty God take you to greater heights sir. You have been a good father and model to me.

This work is dedicated to all those with a passion for true leadership.

Introduction

A leader is the person and not the seat or position that they occupy. Most people have been tempted to look at the seat or position they are occupying, and fail to look within themselves. Some only go for the fame and fortune that they will derive by occupying a particular position. This is one of the reasons why we are having a lot of crises in the world today, especially in Africa. The world is in need of good leaders. We all know that there are good and bad leaders, and unfortunately our world are filled with the latter.

A leader is always a center of attraction and focus by both his followers and detractors. Both the disciples and the Pharisees where attracted to Jesus. There are therefore certain things a leader must do to resist his detractors and to keep his followers.

Jesus said, “I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” If there are gates of hell, then, there are greater gates of heaven. What are these gates all about?

Nehemiah sat down, mourned and fasted several days when he heard that the gates of his city were broken and the walls destroyed. Nehemiah 1:4

Once a city’s gates are broken, destruction is inevitable. A leader is like a city built on a hill that attracts attention from both friends and foes alike; and their gates must be well fortified for their career to last. Are you one of such leaders whose gates have been broken? Then this book is for you. Read along and be blessed.

The Sheep Gate

The  LORD is my shepherd…. Psalms 23:1

He was oppressed and afflicted yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter and as a sheep before her shearer is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. Isaiah 53:7

Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests, and they builded the SHEEP gate, they sanctified it, and set up the doors of it, even unto the tower of Meah they sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel. Nehemiah 3:1

This certainly is the first and most important gate you have to set up as a leader. A sheep is always willing to follow. To be a good leader, you must first of all be a good follower. You build the sheep gate by being a follower. You must follow without complaining or protesting.

As a leader people will follow you only when you are also a follower. Your followers will do only what they see you do. If you refuse to follow, (to be a sheep), they too will do likewise.

You must be prepared to obey your superiors at all times. Faithful followers are likely to become faithful leaders. The Lord is my shepherd. The lord (your master, mentor, etc) is ahead and you are behind following.
