Mira and Elli were the closest of best friends. They knew each other from head to toe. Mira lived on one side of the forest, her house shaded by the Great Oak tree. That tree had been there for as long as anyone could remember. Elli lived on the other side of the forest, on the shores of the Flowing River. One day as Mira skipped joyfully to Elli’s house, she heard a great splish splish. As she turned around, a giant wave blocked out the sun. A rainbow formed but was drowned by the huge wave. Mira ran the rest of the way to Elli’s house. Would the huge wave flood her friend’s house? The wave was too quick for Mira, so she climbed a tree. From that tree she watched the huge wave swallow Elli’s home. All she could see was the small brick chimney sticking out of the water. Mira was a good swimmer so she dived into the water, and swam to the front door. Once she was inside, Mira swam to Elli’s bedroom. Hiding under the bed was Elli’s kitten, Moey. In the closet was Elli. Mira grabbed her friend’s hand and pulled Moey out from under the bed. Together they swam out the window and surfaced the flooded river. Elli’s sofa was floating in the water so Elli and Moey sat on it. “Where are your parents, Elli?” Mira asked. “They are at work.” Elli answered. Mira pushed the sofa through the water until she could touch the ground. Then she helped Elli and Moey into her own house. It was not so flooded, just the front lawn. Later when they were inside, Mira lent her friend some dry clothes, and let her sleep in her bed. From Mira’s mother’s workplace, Mira’s mother heard about the flood, and took with her home Elli’s parents, who happened to work at the same place. They all stayed at Mira’s house until they could build a new house for Elli’s family. After a lot of tap taps and swish swish, the new house was finally finished. Mira and Elli were so happy now. Their houses were right next to each other! But Elli missed living by the river. Mira’s father fixed that. He soon dug a large hole next to the Great Oak and filled it with water. They loved to swim in the pond in the summer time. When Elli’s mother had a baby, Mira and Elli built a secret tree-fort in the Great Oak just for themselves. Mira and Elli were best friends forever, and even met a nice girl named Liz who became good friends with them. The three girls were brave and calm, and lived happily together.
