The beams from the rising sun shone down onto the CourageClan camp, waking the cats for another day. Some cats were up within a few seconds, but some didn't like getting up.
"Come on!" A tortoiseshell kit wailed to a golden tabby kit. "Get up, otherwise Mother won't let us go out to play!" The sleeping kit stirred, and batted the other kit away. "Why do you have to constantly wake me up, Heartkit?" He complained.
"Because sisters are annoying." A silvery gray kit mumbled. "I hate it when Lightingkit comes and spoils all the games I play!"
"My ears are great at picking up mouse-brained comments like yours, Rockkit!" Heartkit growled.
Just as the two kits were about to start an argument, a tortoiseshell she-cat wrapped her tail around Heartkit. "Hush, little one. Violence is not a way of resolving problems." She then turned to the tom kit. "Come on Noblekit, it's time to get up, or you'll miss Lifekit's apprentice ceremony."
I don't want to get up!

Noblekit thought as he opened his eyes and stumbled sleepily to his little paws. The queen, who was called Brightflower, licked Noblekit's ears gently. "Shhh, it's alright." She soothed, despite the kit wasn't making any noises. Noblekit mewled quietly, comforted by his mother.
A tall shadow then appeared at the nursery entrance. Noblekit recognised it as Clawfur, the deputy. He was also Moonstripe's mate, making him Lifekit's father. "Dimstar and the rest of the clan are ready." He meowed to the cats. His daughter tried to run to him.
"Not so fast." Moonstripe quickly picked up Lifekit in her jaws. "Your fur is still mattered and messy. I will not be embarrassed by the rest of the clan because you can't keep your fur tidy for half a day." She started to groom the kit's pelt, and Lifekit scowled. Noblekit and the other kits laughed.
"May all the cats old enough to catch their own prey join under the Hidden Rock for a clan meeting!" A voice cried out.
That must be Dimstar.

Noblekit thought. I've heard the other queens mention him a couple of times.

"I'll race you!" A kit named Wildkit called to the others. "Last one to the Hidden Rock is mouse-dung!" So, the kits raced out of the nursery and started to head towards the Hidden Rock.
Where is the Hidden Rock? I've never been out of the nursery before!

Noblekit realised. He then noticed a large group of cats sitting beneath a tall rock, surrounded by tall grass. It made the rock only just noticeable, so Noblekit guessed it was the Hidden Rock.
Remembering the race, Noblekit rushed over to the giant rock and collapsed on a small patch of dirt. "I won!" He squealed with the last of his breath. Noblekit then noticed that he had announced his victory a bit too loudly, and the rest of the clan were staring at him. Brightflower padded over and picked him up by the scuff.
"Lifekit has reached her sixth moon, and she can now become an apprentice." Dimstar meowed. "Until this cat has earned her warrior name, she will be known as Lifepaw. May StarClan guide her paws down the right path as she trains to become a warrior." The leader then scanned the crowd, looking for a warrior to mentor her. "Sootbound, you have shown courage and determination. Pass these qualities down to Lifepaw."
"I will." Sootbound meowed, touching noses with his new apprentice. Dimstar nodded. "Clan dismissed!"
"Psst!" Noblekit felt someone's hot breath in his ear. He looked up and saw Softpaw, one of the oldest apprentices. "Do you want a tour of camp?"
"B-But I'm not allowed out of camp until I'm a apprentice." Noblekit pointed out sadly. Softpaw giggled, her eyes mischievous. "No, silly. We aren't going beyond any borders of the other clans. Just up to the edge of our territory." She then lowered her voice. "Don't blab to your little chums, otherwise I'll get in trouble with Dimstar and
Windsong. You promise?"
"I swear on my life." Noblekit meowed boldly. Softpaw nodded her approval and started to speak. "This is the main centre of camp. We all live here, and the dens are here." She flicked her tail towards a log covered in moss. "That's the medicine den, where Hedgefoot and Rushpaw do their duty to the clan. Sick cats stay there too, when they are really ill."
"Have you?" Noblekit asked awkwardly. Softpaw shook her head, and then flicked her tail towards a huge hole. "Over there is the apprentice den, where I sleep. It used to be a badger sett, but according to Cedarnose, Couragestar, who was our first leader, found a huge badger living in there, and killed it with no help."
I'd love to kill a fox or badger alone! Or a rogue! Maybe even a loner!

Noblekit thought excitedly, but then he remembered that one cat in the clan was a outsider. He just remained silent as Softpaw pointed her muzzle in direction of a moderate size cave. "That's the warrior den, where I'll be once I get my warrior name. All the warriors and senior warriors sleep there. Clawfur does too." She told the kit.
"What about Dimstar and the elders?" Noblekit questioned. Softpaw flicked her tail towards a large pile of logs. "That's the elder's den. It's not very interesting in there." She then flicked her tail in direction of the long grass that covered the Hidden Rock. "Somewhere down there is Dimstar's den. It's under the Hidden Rock slightly."
"But no one can see it from here." Noblekit observed. Softpaw shook her head, but before she could explain further, a white and brown she-cat padded over. "Softpaw, what have you been doing?"
"Showing Noblekit around camp for a bit." The apprentice told her. The warrior sighed. "You were meant to be in the forest learning how to climb trees, not showing a kit his own clan's camp when he will find out in a few moon's time."
"Sorry Windsong." Softpaw replied apologetically, dipping her head. "I'll come now."
And this is my que to leave. I'll go and play with the other kits.

Noblekit thought before leaving the apprentice to her training.

At sunhigh, the weather was very warm. The heat was uncomftable for the long-haired cats imparticular, but it bothered everyone. So for most of the time, the older and younger cats slept where they could find shade.
Noblekit was asleep in the sun when a muzzle nudged his ear. The little kit batted his paws, trying to get the muzzle away from him.
"Watch your paws." A voice warned. Noblekit opened his eyes and saw Dimstar, staring at him.
Oh great. The cat that was bothering me was my own clan leader. Everyone must think I'm mouse-brained.

He thought. Dimstar flicked his tail towards a large tree with overhanging branches and large, shady leaves. "It would be best if you slept under shade. Your mother, sister and friends are over there. You could die out in this heat." He explained.
"Ok." Noblekit slowly padded away towards the huge tree, watching his mother as she slept peacefully while Heartkit played with Lightingkit.
He then noticed four warriors sitting in the shade, gossiping. Noblekit only recognised Windsong, who was Softpaw's mentor, and Scatterdust, the newest warrior who had spent a lot of his apprentice training in the medicine den due to twisting his jaw.
"Marigold tells me that those kits will find good mentors." A blue she-cat meowed. "Anyone got any ideas?"
"I think Clawfur should mentor Rockkit or Lightingkit." A black tom suggested. "And perhaps I could train one of the kits. I'd like to try out Heartkit."
"Dimstar should train Talonstrike's son, the little gold and white one." Scatterdust added. "I've forgotten his name, was it Nettlekit ot something like that?"
My name is Noblekit, not Nettlekit!

Noblekit thought angrily. He wanted to shred Scatterdust's fur off, but he listened as the young warrior continued. "You know, just to keep an eye on him. He seems a little mischievous."
"He's a kit

, for StarClan's sake. How can he be suspicious at his age?" The blue she-cat argued. "And it's Noblekit, not Nettlekit, you mouse-brain."
Noblekit then felt hot breath on his pelt, making him shiver a bit. He turned around and saw the most frightening thing he ever saw in his life. "Monster!" He cried, but the cat hushed him. "I understand why you are so terrified of me. But you have nothing to fear. My name is Rushpaw."
"The medicine apprentice?" Noblekit guessed timidly. "My friend Softpaw told me about you. Aren't you Hedgefoot's apprentice?" The small tom nodded. "I was training to be a warrior, but in a fox attack I lost my ear and my tail. When I went to flee, I got hit by a monster on the thunderpath, and it crippled my leg. Thank StarClan I survived!" He then stared at the little kit. "Aren't you Talonstrike and Brightflower's son?" He asked.
"Yeah." Noblekit told him. "My sister is Heartkit. I'm Noblekit." Rushpaw nodded. "Ah. Thought I heard about you somewhere."
Surely every cat in the clan knows me?

The kit thought. He then nodded at the apprentice and padded away towards his mother.
"Tag!" Heartkit squealed as she batted Lightingkit's tail. Lightingkit stopped and spun round, baring her teeth at her friend.
"Can I play?" Noblekit asked hopefully. Heartkit stuck her tongue out. "No way! I don't want to play with my irritating brother!" She complained, pushing him away. "Go away and find something better to do!"
Noblekit felt a little bit hurt, to be rejected by his sister. Maybe she didn't want to play with him anymore? Or perhaps Lightingkit had said things behind his back? Whatever had happened, something had snapped in Heartkit.
"Kits." Smallwhisker sighed to Emberpatch and Brightflower. "Some will never learn to get on."
"I hope my

kits will have some respect." Emberpatch meowed, looking at her swollen belly. "Ferretfang is dying for them to come." For some reason after that comment, Brightflower purred in amusement. "I think he's a little too desperate. I don't see why you accepted to become his mate in the first place, he can be very irritating!"
Noblekit had to agree with his mother. Ferretfang was a bit of a worry guts, especially now Emberpatch was so close to kitting. He kept pestering the apprentices to make sure she had the softest moss and the tastiest fresh-kill. He would visit her everyday and try to make Hedgefoot check that she was healthy. Noblekit found this rather strange and annoying, as he had never known any toms to do that.
"He does love me, Brightflower." Emberpatch insisted. "He was the closest friend I had after my sister died from greencough. I am aware that he is a little over-protective of me.."
"You mean a lot

." Smallwhisker corrected, wrapping her tail around her paws. Emberpatch just sighed and continued on. "As I was saying, he is over-protective of me because he didn't realise I was expecting his kits until a couple of moons ago. He just wants the best for our kits."
As the ginger queen finished speaking, two cats appeared at the entrance of the nursery. Noblekit reconised the smaller cat to be Ferretfang, but he didn't know who the golden tabby was. That cat's got fur like me!

He realised. The kit watched as the cat went over to his mother and greeted her with a friendly lick on the cheek. Brightflower purred in delight, but then motioned for Noblekit to come over.
"So, this is him?" The golden tabby warrior asked, fixing his gaze on the little kit. Brightflower nodded, and then turned her attention to her son. "Noblekit, this is Talonstrike. He is your father." She explained. "He is one of CourageClan's senior warriors, and a trusted friend of Dimstar."
Wow!

Noblekit thought to himself. I can see the connection now! Heartkit has fur like Brightflower, and my golden fur comes from Talonstrike!

He slowly padded up to the tall warrior, trembling with fear and excitement. His fear was washed away when Talonstrike's eyes shone with pride. "He looks very handsome and strong. I can sense that he will become a great warrior." He complimented, touching noses with the young kit.
Noblekit then realised that his father hadn't met his other kit yet, and the little tom kit was delighted to see a look of envy on Heartkit's face as she observed what was going on.
"I have to go now." Talonstrike meowed quietly, standing up. "I'll come back and see you tomorrow." He licked his son's ear and pressed his muzzle against Brightflower's before leaving the nursery quietly with Ferretfang, who had been fussing about Emberpatch as usual.
"Does Father know about Heartkit?" Noblekit asked, snuggling up against his mother's warm pelt. Brightflower nodded. "He knows about her, but she hasn't met him properly yet. I will introduce Heartkit to him tomorrow."

At sunset, the camp was eerily silent. Not many cats were around, but if they were, they were all talking in hushed voices or quiet whispers.
Noblekit did feel a little afraid, but he knew that he was safe, knowing that Brightflower was around to protect him.
"Can we go and play outside?" Wildkit begged Smallwhisker yet again. As she had done earlier, the queen shook her head. "Stay here and be quiet. Perhaps try going to sleep, it might take your mind off playing." She suggested, wrapping her tail around her three kits. Noblekit was instantly suspicious. The kits were nearly always allowed to play, and the camp was silent, so why were they told to go to sleep?
"I'm bored." Heartkit complained, wriggling around. Brightflower hushed her and nudged the little kit between her paws. "Shhh, it will be alright. Just wait a bit."
"Hey, why don't we play a game?" Emberpatch suggested. "Whoever can stay quiet the longest wins!" The kits were silenced, and Noblekit was still curious. Why are we being quiet?

Ferretfang then appeared at the entrance of the den, with Rushpaw and the apprentices. They looked very tired and defeated, which Noblekit had never seen before.
"It's true." Ferretfang panted. "There are ForestClan intruders on our territory. They're here seeking revenge for some cat's death. I think Dimstar mentioned Daisystem or someone like that."
"Oh great StarClan, not her." Brightflower was horrified when Ferretfang annonced the cat. "She helped me with my kitting when those ForestClan cats were taking shelter in our territory from the dogs."
"I remember that." Smallwhisker added. "She was a friend to the clan. Who killed her?" Ferretfang just shook his head. "She wasn't murdered, she was killed when a tree fell on her while chasing Scatterdust back over the border. ForestClan blame it on us, so they want revenge."
"We're here to defend the nursery!" Softpaw chirped. Emberpatch wasn't convinced by this. "But you apprentices are so young. And Rushpaw, you're a injured medicine apprentice who almost died. You're in no condition to fight!"
"I still had battle training." Rushpaw pointed out. "I may not be as sharp as I used to be, but I can still fight, and I will do what is best for my clan." Ferretfang nodded briefly to the medicine apprentice and padded over to his mate. "We'll look after you, don't worry."
What about us? Will everyone look after us?

Noblekit thought anxiously.
There was then a deafening battle cry, followed by furious yowls and hisses. Lifepaw jumped back in surprise and fear. "Who is that?" She asked, hiding behind Treasurepaw.
"That cat who called the battle cry was Hailstar, leader of ForestClan." Softpaw told her. "He is a huge blue tabby with long claws and green eyes. Trust me, he's the scariest cat you'll ever meet! He just glares at everyone at the gathering!" She then looked at the kits, who seemed terrified of this cat they had never met. Apart from Noblekit.
"Watch out!" A voice yelled from the elder's den. Everyone turned around and saw four ForestClan warriors racing towards the nursery, hissing and spitting. The apprentices and Ferretfang leapt at them, ready to defend their clanmates.
"Can we

fight?" Noblekit begged. Brightflower chuckled coldly. "Not for a while. You're only five and a half moons old."
"What about us?" Rockkit asked, flicking his tail towards his siblings. "We can fight better than the elders!"
"Not a chance." Smallwhisker growled, wrapping her tail around the three kits. "You may be a quarter of a moon away from becoming apprentices, but you're still too young."
A small apprentice then crept in and pounced onto Wildkit. "Just avenging my mother." She said bitterly, holding up her sheathed claws. Noblekit threw himself at the apprentice, who was only just bigger than him. He dug his little claws into the apprentice's leg and sank his jaws into her forepaw. The she-cat howled in pain before picking up the kit in her jaws and thrusting him away.
Noblekit felt nothing as he hit the ground, but he could hear a high-pitched scream from behind him. "The kits are coming!"
That must be Emberpatch. Where's a medicine cat when you need them?

The kit thought. Rushpaw quickly limped over and checked over the screaming she-cat. "The first one's coming." He told her. "Push." He then turned to Noblekit. "Could you get me that stick over there?" Noblekit went towards the corner of the crowded den, picked up a smallish stick in his jaws and padded back over. Rushpaw took the stick from his jaws and passed it to Emberpatch. "Bite on that while you push, it will stop the amount of noise you make." He ordered. The queen bit hard onto the stick until there was a small bundle of fur huddled beside her.
"Second one." Rushpaw meowed. "Keep going."
Within five minutes, Emberpatch was suckling three kits. The warriors who had tried to break into the nursery and the apprentice had fled, and Ferretfang purred in delight. "What are their names?"
"I would like to call the white and ginger she-cat Brightkit, the brown she-cat with white paws Ivykit and the dark brown tabby tom with a black chest and white paws Adderkit." Emberpatch told him, wrapping her tail protectively around them. Ferretfang nodded in approval and licked her cheek.
"ForestClan, retreat! CourageClan have paid what they needed to pay!" A loud voice yowled. Noblekit guessed it was Hailstar again. But he was confused by what he said. I don't think anyone died, did they?

Noblekit got his question answered when someone yowled "Cloudscream! Cloudscream is dead!"

4

The camp fell into a stunned silence. No cat spoke, but this silence turned into masses of yowls. Many cats dipped their heads, one of them being Softpaw.
"How did she die?" Dimstar demanded, his neck fur bristling with fury. Noblekit watched as Marigold stepped forward, her eyes showing sorrow. "One of the new warriors, Longstripe, slashed her neck open. I tried to save her, but it was too late." She explained.
Noblekit glanced over at Softpaw, who looked very upset to know of the grave news. He approached her slowly. "Why are you so upset? I never knew Cloudscream incredibly well, but everyone will miss her. I'm upset, but you look like you've lost your mate."
"Cloudscream was my mother." Softpaw sniffed. "I already lost my father a couple of moons before you were born, and now StarClan send for my own mother." She then turned away, not even looking at the kit. "Just leave me alone." Noblekit winced, but padded back to his mother, who licked him behind the ears. "It's alright, little one."
"May all cats old enough to catch their prey join under the Hidden Rock for a clan meeting!" Dimstar yowled. The clan gathered beneath the leader, whilst the kits watched from the nursery.
"Today, 3 apprentices have shown that they deserve their warrior names. So can Softpaw, Treasurepaw and Hawkpaw come up here please?" Dimstar called. The three apprentices rushed up, but Softpaw's eyes were still clouded with pain and grief for her dead mother.
"I, Dimstar, leader of CourageClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on these apprentices. They have trained hard in your noble code, and I ask that you make them warriors in turn." The cream leader then turned to the apprentices. "Softpaw, Treasurepaw and Hawkpaw, will you uphold the warrior code and use it to defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do!" The apprentices cried. Dimstsar smiled. "Then by the powers of StarClan, I grant you your warrior names. Softpaw, from this day onward you will be known as Softcloud. StarClan honours you for your loyalty and determination, and we welcome you as a full warrior of CourageClan." He went over to the next apprentice. "Treasurepaw, from this day onward you will be known as Treasureheart. StarClan honours you for your courage and quick thinking, and we welcome you as a full warrior of CourageClan." He finally went over to the last apprentice. "Hawkpaw, from this day onward you will be known as Hawkfrost. StarClan honours you for your determaination and your speed, and we welcome you as a full warrior of CourageClan."
"Softcloud! Treasureheart! Hawkfrost! Softcloud! Treasureheart! Hawkfrost!" The clan chanted.
"In tradition of our warrior ancestors," Dimstar continued. "our newly named warriors will sit vigil tonight and guard camp before joining their new denmates tomorrow."
I wonder what my warrior name will be!

Noblekit thought excitedly.
"Come on, litte one." Brightflower meowed gently. "I think you've had enough fun for one day." The tom-kit followed his mother, yawning.

Noblekit woke up to find himself sleeping on top of a pile of leaves, with a cool breeze ruffling his pelt. A perfect forest surrounded him, but there was no sun in the sky. There was no moon either, just a frighting, cloudy sky.
"Welcome, young warrior." A strange voice said from the shadows. Noblekit scrambled up to his paws and looked for where the cat who spoke to him.
"Over here!" The voice hissed again. Noblekit finally saw a dark grey she-cat with lighter tipped ears and green eyes. Her eyes narrowed suspiciously. "I thought I would be sent a warrior

, not a little weak kit." She mewed bitterly. Noblekit ruffled his fur in anger. "I am not weak! My father Talonstrike isn't, and neither is Brightflower, my mother!" He roared, pouncing onto the she-cat's front paw. He dug his jaws into her leg, trying to cause pain.
"Right." The she-cat rolled her eyes and kicked the kit off her. She crouched down and grinned. "I see you have some skills. But despite having no training, you aren't afraid to attack me. How?"
"I-I don't know." Noblekit admitted, shaking his pelt. "I just know." The grey she-cat wasn't convinced, but she looked intrested. "My name is Shademask. I'm a StarClan warrior who has been sent to help you become a great warrior." She explained. "You're Noblekit, correct?"
"Yes." The kit told her. "Are you going to make me the strongest cat in the forest?" Shademask grinned again. "I will try. I shall visit you every day to check up on your progress, and to give you some lessons. We'll start tomorrow. Agreed?"
"I agree!" Noblekit chirped. Yet again, Shademask grinned, but this time it seemed strange, almost frightening. But the young tom kit had no choice. He could trust a StarClan cat any day.
"Very well. Go and rest, young Noblekit. You will need your strength tomorrow." Shademask gently rasped her tongue over the kit's head and faded away.

"From this day onward, until you gain your warrior name, you shall be known as Noblepaw. Clawfur, you are a quick and powerful warrior. Pass your excellent skills down to Noblepaw."
"From this day onward, until you gain your warrior name, you shall be known as Heartpaw. Auroralight, you are cunning and brave. Pass these skills onto Heartpaw."
It had been a moon since Cloudscream had died in the battle against ForestClan. Lightingkit, Rockkit and Wildkit were now apprentices, meaning the apprentice den was quite full with now 7 apprentices. Emberpatch's litter weren't very old, but they were playful and energetic young kits. Rushpaw had finally gained his full medicine cat name, which was Rushbreeze. Noblepaw was proud for his friend, but prouder for Softcloud, for she had recieved her first apprentice: Wildpaw. Lightingpaw had Dimstar and Rockpaw had Moonstripe.
"Come along, young one. We will go on border patrol first." Clawfur called to his apprentice, flicking his tail over to Lilypetal and Windsong. "Those two are about to go to the ForestClan border."
"Great!" Noblepaw exclaimed, bouncing around. "I'll get to see more of the territory!" Clawfur smiled, and led his clanmates into the bushes.

ForestClan smell so weird!

That was the first thing Noblepaw thought of when he reached the border. He could scent some cats nearby, but not many, perhaps just three or four.
A rustle startled the CourageClan cats, especially Noblepaw. It was only a small ForestClan patrol, as Noblepaw had suspected, but Clawfur and a tall light brown tom were hissing and growling. "Ferretjaw." The deputy growled.
"Well, well, we meet again." Ferretjaw snarled, baring his teeth. "Are you still trying to get over what my son did to your precious warrior in the battle?"
"Longstripe? Your

son?" Clawfur sneered. "That young tabby couldn't possibly be your kit!"
"Believe it or not, it's true." A small she-cat hissed from behind. Ferretjaw flicked the young cat's ear with his tail. "Quiet, Brokenpaw. You do not need to speak."
"Who's that

?" Brokenpaw meowed in disgust, glaring at Noblepaw.
"That is Noblepaw, my apprentice." Clawfur replied. "You will leave him alone, he this is first time out of camp."
"Hi!" Noblepaw chirped. Brokenpaw snorted. "I'm protecting my clan, not making friends. That's a sign of weakness."
"Listen to her, Noblepaw." The golden apprentice could hear Shademask's voice in his head. "She makes a fair point. Why don't you prove your strength and fight her?"
Obeying the StarClan cat like a leader, Noblepaw sprung at Brokenpaw and raked his claws down her side. Brokenpaw yelped, but narrowed her eyes in suprise. "And the brave young apprentice attempts to kill off the wicked ForestClan she-cat." She mocked cruelly. "I like a cat with a bit of determaination." She crouched down and pounced, tearing at Noblepaw's pelt. The CourageClan apprentice slashed her muzzle and dug his teeth into her leg.
"You fight like a kittypet!" Brokenpaw jeered, kicking the apprentice off. "Pick on someone your own size, squirt!"
Before Noblepaw could get up, Clawfur grabbed his scuff and dragged him away from Brokenpaw. "What did I tell you, ignorant apprentice?" He hissed angrily. "Leave him alone!"
"And I think you should learn to control your apprentice and your lies, Clawfur." Ferretjaw replied coldly, ushering Brokenpaw and the rest of his patrol away. "That cat is not a new apprentice if he knows battle moves."
The ForestClan patrol then swiftly retreated, leaving the CourageClan cats stunned.
